Critics Eda Gunaydin, Michael Sun and Cher Tan examine the present state and potential futures of literary criticism. Literary criticism seems to be in an endless state of decline. In so-called Australia, a particular flavour of cultural cringe is yoked to cultural hegemony: a critic might find themselves locked within the ivory tower, or self-censoring for fear of offence, or deliberately pursuing contrarianism for clicks. How, then, do critics move beyond this deadlock? Who decides what is 'good' criticism? What, exactly, is the function of criticism at the present time? This panel discussion sees three critics examine the possibilities of literary criticism, as well as the roles and responsibilities of the critic. Together they pick apart these issues and attempt to propose a future for reviews that takes into account not only writers and editors, but readers and culture as a whole. This conversation was recorded on 3 August 2024 as part of the inaugural Liminal Festival, presented in partnership with The Wheeler Centre. Bringing together some of the continent's most talented writers, the Liminal Festival contemplates the language of our shared histories and future. The Liminal Festival was supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria. The official bookseller was Amplify Bookstore. Featured music is ‘Diffuser' by Shiruky. Dr. Shao-cheng (Michael) Sun is an Associate Professor at the Citadel. He is a veteran of the Taiwanese army, retiring as a full colonel. Dr. Sun is the author of “Hedging China Threat: US-Taiwan Relations Since 1949.“ His research interests are East Asian security and politics, U.S.-China relations, and U.S. security policy in Asia. He teaches East Asian Affairs and International Politics. He explained the importance of the Taiwan Relations Act between the US and Taiwan, and the One-China Policy, which the US has supported since the Carter Administration. Is it feasible to turn Taiwan into a relationship similar to Hong Kong's in the 1997 Agreement, which is different from the Taiwanese situation? If there were an armed conflict in the Taiwan Strait, it could radically upend the economic systems around the world, create physical devastation, plus a simulated war exercise showed the US Navy would suffer severe losses.

In 2022, nightlife, theatre and music festivals came back across Australia, but wild weather and Covid-19 made for a bumpy landing. The year also delivered a dazzling array of film, prestige TV (including an Australian-made international hit) and a series of awards show fiascos. Guardian Australia's culture editor Steph Harmon and culture editorial assistant Michael Sun dive into the year in culture and the arts, and discuss the most exciting things coming up in 2023
The Executive Mayor of Joahannesburg, Dr Mpho Phalatse, has made an urgent request for Eskom to suspend load shedding in the city for three days to allow for it to meet the escalating fault and outage reports being logged every hour. City's MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, Michael Sun says power cuts are preventing the city from being able to effectively attend to the outages and to stabilise the situation. He spoke to Sakina Kamwendo on the latest on the ground.

Hi pals! After our live ep last week we're back with some pop culture analysing. First up, ultra-fast fashion brand Pretty Little Thing (creatively directed by Molly-Mae Hague) held an unofficial runway during London Fashion Week. Next, Kanye West has spent the last week harassing his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian. We dissect the evolution of the Instagram posting and ask why Kanye gets a pass for being the "manic genius". We read from two pieces. An opinion piece by Arwa Mahdawi titled Whatever's happening with Kanye and Kim, his behavior shouldn't be normalized and an article in The Swaddle by titled Kanye West Harassing Kim Kardashian Is No Laughing Matter. After that we get into Julia Fox AKA Miss Uncut Jems. We discuss her It Girl energy and reference a piece by Hunter Harris titled Julia Fox Is Her Own Muse, Thank You Very Much for The Cut. This sparks a convo around the "new It Girls". Are they mysterious or is this simply another iteration of the "Jennifer Lawrence pipeline" in action? For recommendations, Jas recommends another Cut piece titled Why Couldn't Anyone Cancel Dolce & Gabanna by Tahirah Hairston while Maggie reads an essay by Michael Sun titled I Will Be The Most Esoteric Person On The Bus. Chat next week besties. xo See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The February 2022 issue of Health Affairs focuses entirely on racism and health. It includes papers that trace the long history of racism to present day policies and practices that are the reasons for large and sustained health disparities.Racism and bias come in many forms and given the social stigma associated with them, they can be difficult to study. When a study comes along that provides new empirical data on bias, it makes a major contribution to our understanding of this important topic. One such study in the February issue from Michael Sun, a medical student from the University of Chicago, and colleagues is the focus of today's A Health Podyssey.Sun and coauthors studied bias in how patients are characterized by clinicians through the history and physical notes entered into a patient's electronic health record, or EHR. When a patient is admitted as an inpatient or an outpatient, the notes document the patient's reason for seeking medical care and summarize the patient's medical, family, and social history. The notes can also describe the plan to address the patient's medical problems. But what if the way the patient is characterized in these notes is distorted by clinician bias? Sun and colleagues examined racial bias in EHRs and found that Black patients had over 2.5 times the odds of having negative descriptors in their medical records when compared to white patients. If you enjoy this interview, order the February 2022 Health Affairs Racism and Health theme issue.Listen to Health Affairs Pathways.Subscribe: RSS | Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Stitcher | Google Podcasts
Although racism and bias have been long documented issues affecting health equity, findings of a recent study published in Health Affairs indicates these issues may be more embedded in the US health care system than originally thought. Examining electronic health records (EHRs) from an urban academic medical center, researchers found that negative descriptors were significantly more likely to appear in the records of Black patients compared with White patients. Other factors—such as insurance type, marriage status, and even the COVID-19 pandemic—influenced the odds of having this potentially stigmatizing language appear in a patient's EHR. On this episode of Managed Care Cast, we speak with the first author on the study, Michael Sun, a medical student at the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago, on the findings, as well as the steps that can be taken to increase awareness among clinicians of these stigmatizing descriptors.
