What happens when language created to make inequality visible becomes so broadly used that the inequality itself begins to disappear? Terms like mental load, invisible labor, and emotional labor have helped name forms of work —often disproportionately carried by women—that traditional measures of labor have failed to capture. But lately, these terms seem to be everywhere, applied to everything from emotionally difficult conversations to administrative annoyances to ordinary responsibilities we wish we didn't have. In this episode of the Advancing Women Podcast, Dr. Kimberly DeSimone explores what happens when useful structural concepts undergo conceptual inflation: their boundaries expand until they begin encompassing experiences increasingly distinct from what they were originally helping us understand. Because the popularity of a concept can become the enemy of its precision. Not all invisible work is “the mental load.” Not all underappreciated work is “emotional labor.” And not every unpleasant obligation is evidence of inequity. There is a difference between a burden and a pattern of inequity. Kimberly traces the research behind mental load and cognitive household labor, revisits sociologist Arlie Hochschild's original conception of emotional labor, and considers what gets lost when structural language becomes a generic synonym for this is hard. She also explores emerging research from Angelica Ferrara and colleagues on “Mankeeping”: the work women may perform to maintain men's social and emotional lives, and an important paradox: at the same time we're broadening the language of invisible labor to encompass men's ordinary responsibilities, men's shrinking social networks may be generating additional invisible labor for women. This isn't about linguistic gatekeeping. Concepts evolve. Language evolves. It's about what happens when we strip the analysis out of the language. Because a concept becoming more inclusive isn't necessarily the same thing as a concept becoming more illuminating. And precision isn't about protecting words. Hon är politisk tjänsteman för SD i konstitutionsutskottet och lever tillsammans med Gustav Gellerbrant, en av Sverigedemokraternas tyngsta tjänstemän, som är en central länk mellan partiet och regeringen inom Tidösamarbetet.  Experter som Expo talat med beskriver omständigheterna som säkerhetsmässigt allvarliga. Twentieth-century Chile relied heavily on its copper mining industry, which was vulnerable to disruption due to its dependance on foreign supplies of blasting powder. It was to address this strategic weakness that Chilean leaders formulated a plan to lure a powder manufacturer from the Global North to open a plant in Chile. In her latest research, Dr. Ángela Vergara, professor at California State University at Los Angeles, uncovers the story of DuPont in Chile, including its plant built to supply the domestic copper mining industry, and other business ventures like licensing DuPont synthetic textile technology to Chilean manufacturers. DuPont promoted its plant as a safe workplace with reduced risk of harm, but Dr. Vergara found evidence that workers suffered from respiratory and dermatological conditions, and blamed the plant environment. In support of her research, Dr. Vergara received funding from the Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society at the Hagley Museum and Library. Des premières vagues sur l'île d'Oléron et en Nouvelle-Calédonie aux podiums de la Fashion week en passant par sa nouvelle casquette d'entrepreneur, Victoria Vergara semble déjà avoir eu plusieurs vies. Le surf est bien sûr à la croisée de toutes ses activités, que ce soit en compétition ou en free surf, et fait partie intégrante de son quotidien et de son esthétique. Mais elle a très tôt su tirer profit de son image pour dépasser la seule sphère surf et en tirer profit auprès d'autres univers.
Active depuis les débuts sur Facebook puis Instagram, elle a su habilement jongler entre action et lifestyle et développer des communautés solides. Des arguments qui de nos jours valent souvent plus qu'un palmarès en compétition pour séduire des marques et décrocher des contrats.

A notre micro, Victoria revient sur ce parcours très intéressant et la gestion de cette carrière atypique qu'elle a été l'une des premières à développer chez les surfeurs français. Welcome back to another episode of the Peaceful Political Revolution in America podcast.Today I will share part two of my conversation with Camila Vergara, political theorist and author of Systemic Corruption: Constitutional Ideas for an Anti-Oligarchic Republic. Camila is one of the leading theorists working today on what real, structural democratic renewal actually looks like.In part one, we explored the theoretical backdrop, what she means when she says our democracies aren't merely corrupted by bad actors, but by genuine systemic corruption. In her view, most liberal democracies are built, structurally designed to protect the elites and a spreading international oligarchy. In this half, we get into the details of what real democratic resistance looks like and how Chileans took up the cause for democratic renewal.Camila walks us through the ground-level story of Chile's 2019 uprising — how a few cents added to a subway fare and one tone-deaf comment from a government minister advising the people to just, "wake up an hour earlier to save money" lit a fuse that had been smoldering for decades. She describes the students jumping turnstiles in solidarity with their parents, transit stations burning under circumstances that were never fully investigated, curfews meant to prevent dissent, and the first government troops in the streets since Pinochet. If that sounds all too familiar, keep listening.  She explains how out of that chaos came something genuinely rare: a network of citizen assemblies sharing one goal, to write the world's most progressive constitution. This movement came from the ground up, and in her view, even though it was ultimately defeated by a structural push that undermined the popular will of the people, the example set by the Chilean people remains a hugely significant one, one for all nations suffering from a decline in democratic norms and system corruption.From there we go further back, to the Marquis de Condorcet's 1793 constitution for revolutionary France, and his model of interlinked primary assemblies — a vision of direct democracy that never made it into what we now think of as the liberal democratic tradition. We'll discuss why the framers' fear of the "tyranny of the majority" doesn't actually hold up historically, and why energy cooperatives and neighborhood assemblies might matter more right now than at any other time in our history as a nation. That question, how close we are to a tipping point from oligarchy into outright tyranny, and what it would take to organize our way back out, is where Camila believes the United States stands today, and it should interest every American concerned about our future as a democracy.It's a wide-ranging, sometimes sobering, but ultimately hopeful conversation about power — who holds it, and how ordinary people can actually take it back. Here's part two of my conversation with Camila Vergara. I begin by asking her how this movement began.

Welcome to another episode of the Peaceful Political Revolution in America podcast.I want to begin today with a passage that has been sitting with me for some time. It comes from the Swiss scholar Pascal Lottaz, host of the Neutrality Studies podcast, in his March 2026 introduction to an interview with the political scientist Dr. Aaron Good. Lottaz opened that conversation this way. "Crime in the United States is not a bug; it's a feature. That actually explains a lot also about its illegal foreign policies. The US as a political entity is deeply intertwined with crime syndicates and explicitly illegal acts under international and local law. Epstein was not at all an exception. These shady dealers are part and parcel of how US politics works."Good's argument, in brief, is this. After the Second World War, the United States built what he calls a "tripartite state" — the public democratic state we learn about in civics class, the national-security state of the Pentagon and the intelligence agencies, and, behind both of them, a deep state that he defines as an obscured, dominant, supranational source of antidemocratic power. That deep state, he argues, did not emerge from any constitutional design. It emerged from the pursuit of empire — from a postwar project that required, in his words, an endless exception to the rule of law in order to function.That's quite a diagnosis. And it is a powerful one. But it leaves an obvious question hanging. If the rot is structural, what do we do about it? That question is what brings me to today's guest.Dr. Camila Vergara is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Research and Innovation at the Essex Business School at the University of Essex. She is the editor of Theoria: A Journal of Social and Political Theory, and the author of Systemic Corruption: Constitutional Ideas for an Anti-Oligarchic Republic, published by Princeton University Press.Where Aaron Good gives us a forensic account of how the American state has been hollowed out by elite criminality, Camila Vergara takes a longer view. Drawing on Machiavelli, Condorcet, Rosa Luxemburg, and Hannah Arendt, she argues that the corruption we are describing is not a recent betrayal of an otherwise sound design — it is the predictable trajectory of representative government itself. Republics, she contends, decay into oligarchies. They always have. And the question is not whether the United States is corrupt, but whether the constitutional architecture we inherited contains the tools to push back against that decay — or whether we need to build new ones.Her answer, of course, is the latter. She proposes what she calls plebeian institutions — a network of local assemblies, independent of parties and government, designed to give ordinary people a permanent, structural check on the power of the few.Today, we are going to walk through that argument. Saia nos narra el complejo retorno a Colombia en 1991 tras los acuerdos de paz ; un regreso que, a sus 13 años, se sintió como un exilio más, y cómo la muerte de su padre en 2022 la enfrentó a la necesidad imperiosa de sanar su propia biografía. Las Podnights Madrid vuelven este mismo sábado 30 de mayo con una nueva grabación en directo y en este episodio previo quiero contaros todos los detalles de una cita que, sinceramente, me hace especial ilusión porque vuelve a visitarnos Javi Fernández con uno de esos proyectos que ya forman parte de la historia reciente de este ciclo de eventos. Y es que por cuarto año consecutivo tendremos en Madrid una nueva edición de ¿Cómo ye la tu movida?, el podcast producido desde Asturias por El Estudio Pod para La Voz de Asturias. En este capítulo aprovecho para repasar un poco qué supone este proyecto, cómo suelen ser sus grabaciones fuera de casa y qué tipo de invitados acostumbra a traer Javi cada vez que aterriza en la capital. Por un lado Carlos Álvarez, reportero habitual de La Sexta y uno de esos rostros que seguramente habéis visto cubriendo actualidad en directo muchísimas veces. Enter ketamine: started therapeutic (Mindbloom) but escalated to daily K-holes with Oculus VR for near-death/grief escapes, addictive Journey Circle weekends (MDMA/ayahuasca/mushrooms group catharsis without integration), erratic calls to mom, club blackouts, and cousin finding her passed out. Family intervention (Sophia pays, nephew packs her) lands her in trauma-focused Breathe Life rehab.She firmly rejects "California sober" as a trap—psychedelics delayed real surrender for her; true addicts can't substitute one mind-alter for another. Full AA commitment (no more a la carte) + Kabbalah (post-breakup desperation) changed everything: tikkun (soul correction via tough life choices), turning reactive impulses (anger/gossip) into proactive restriction, daily study/meditation for frequency shifts.
