I am joined in this podcast by Jamie Ward to explore synaesthaesia as he depicted in his book titled The Frog Who Croaked Blue: Synaesthesia and the Mixing of the Senses. Jamie Ward is Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Sussex, UK. His principal research interest lies in the cognitive neuroscience of synaesthesia, although he has published on many other topics, including frontal lobe function, memory and disorders of reading and spelling. We explored the history of synaesthesia and why the scientific interest has waxed and waned over time, and how the understanding of the condition has evolved. Jamie Ward also narrated how a chance observation by neurologist Richard Cytowic at a dinner launched the scientific study of synaesthesia. We also reviewed the defining features of synaesthesia, and its familial and acquired causes. The conversation also discussed the different types of synaesthesia, and what Jamie referred to as the fringes of synaesthesia. Other themes that the podcast reviewed are the ways by which the knowledge of synaesthesia has challenged the traditional concepts of our senses, how much control people with synaesthesia have over their experiences, and the possible evolutionary advantages of synaesthesia, such as heightened memory and creativity. We also reviewed the gaps in the scientific understanding of synaesthesia and the prospects for unravelling its complete picture .Jamie Ward's research uses several methods in cognitive neuroscience, including human neuropsychology, functional imaging, EEG and TMS. He is the founding editor of the journal, Cognitive Neuroscience, and is currently President of the British Association of Cognitive Neuroscience (BACN). His other books include The Student's Guide to Cognitive Neuroscience and The Student's Guide to Social Neuroscience.

Today, we are going back into the archives for one of my favorite episodes: We are talking to neuroscientist, entrepreneur, and best-selling author, David Eagleman. We're talking about synaesthesia — and if you don't know what that is, you're about to find out.Special NoteWe are beyond thrilled that From Our Neurons to Yours has won a 2024 Signal Award in the Science Podcast category. It's a big honor — thanks to everyone who voted!---Imagine Thursday. Does Thursday have a color? What about the sound of rain — does that sound taste like chocolate? Or does the sound of a saxophone feel triangular to you? For about 3% of the population, the sharp lines between our senses blend together. Textures may have tastes, sounds, shapes, numbers may have colors. This sensory crosstalk is called synesthesia, and it's not a disorder, just a different way of experiencing the world. To learn about the neuroscience behind this fascinating phenomenon and what it tells us about how our brains perceive the world, we were fortunate enough to speak with David Eagleman, a neuroscientist, author, and entrepreneur here at Stanford. Eagleman has long been fascinated by synesthesia and what it means about how our perceptions shape our reality. We also discuss Eagleman's work with Neosensory, a company that develops technology to help individuals with hearing loss by translating sound into vibrations on the skin. The episode highlights the adaptability and plasticity of the brain, offering a deeper understanding of how our perceptions shape our reality. In addition to his research, Eagleman is a prolific communicator of science — the author of several books including Livewired and Incognito and host of the PBS series "The Brain with David Eagleman" and the new podcast series "Inner Cosmos".Enjoy!LinksLivewired (book)Incognito (book)Wednesday Is Indigo Blue (book)Neosensory (website)Synesthete.org (website)Inner Cosmos with David Eagleman (podcast)Episode CreditsSend us a text! Thanks for listening! Charlotte Day Wilson joins Jamz to go Between The Lines on the song ‘New Day' taken from her most recent album ‘Cyan Blue'. They talk about motherhood, fertility and genetics in a same-sex couple, the intimacy of live performance, and how experiencing synaesthesia influences her writing.
I got to sit down with neurodivergent artist April Livingston from the US. We explored the phenomenon of getting stuck in movie plots, materials and tasks: The Synaesthesia Eddy! Is this something you experience too and what are your thoughts? Is this a synaesthesia thing, or maybe rather visual or cross-modal echolalia, a matter of hyperfocus? We can't hear your thoughts! Reach out via Instagram @maikepreissing or @terracurio or via management@maikepreissing.com. We also got to speak about Narcolepsy! Another condition, surprisingly closely linked to Neurodiversity. Do you experience sounds or music visually as certain shapes? Or perhaps you are able to ‘taste' words or ‘hear' colours. If so, it sounds like you have synaesthesia, a neurological phenomenon that leads to some of us experiencing a merging of different senses that are not typically connected. In this episode we catch up with Prof Jamie Ward, a psychologist and synaesthesia researcher based at the University of Sussex. He tells us about the varying forms synaesthetic experiences can take, what we know about their impacts on cognition and creativity and how it's likely that you've met a synaesthete without even realising it. Welcome to the Information Entropy Podcast where this week the boys aimed to talk about senses in the animal kingdom and tangented so hard that the title is no longer appropriate! The boys kick off the show as normal with some news of the week and a quick gander into what senses are. Soon though the boys move from senses to how our brains perceive the world differently, firstly to other animals and even to each other. Synaesthesia, aphantasia, do we all think in the same speed, does that change how we perceive events around us, and does all of this together affect our senses and thus perception of the world around us? Well, buckle up and get ready to find out! Music: EVA – 失望した

This week Monique and Michelle interview neurodivergent woman, epidemiologist, and mental health researcher, Dr Holly Erskine. Holly’s PhD research focussed on the global epidemiology of ADHD and conduct disorder as well as the long-term outcomes associated with these. She now leads an international project looking at mental health in adolescents in Kenya, Indonesia, and Vietnam. In this episode we discuss with Holly her experience of synaesthesia and she explains to us just how grapheme-colour synaesthesia works. Holly also describes her research on ADHD epidemiology, including prevalence data, long term outcomes for ADHDers, and the surprising (or maybe not!) connection between ADHD and driving accidents. We discuss disability and disorder terminology versus ‘difference’, and unpack some of the intricacies and inadequacies of language. Synesthesia is a fascinating condition where some people can hear tastes or see letters in color or other crazy combinations of senses. Imagine listening to a Geico commercial and tasting fajitas. Trina McGee is an End of life Concierge specializing in cancer and heart-related illnesses and is a practicing practical intuitive that uses her gifts of seeing the need under the need. Trina comes from an extensive background in Sales and Service in beauty medical sales in Optometry. Alongside her sales expertise, Trina has served over 30 plus years in holistic and alternative care. Trina takes pride in offering mentorships and side-by-side studies in the holistic health and wellbeing movement. Trina now uses these skills along with her synaesthesia to assist persons in times of planning for and preplanning for the last stages of the end of life. A few highlights from the show: 1. Trina offers something that she calls a breakdown from a breakthrough. She brings in tools and resources similar to tactile used with dementia patients. She creates a special area where they can still be present and close to the dying and take some time out. 2. Synaesthesia is a neurological trait or condition that results in a joining or merging of senses that aren't normally connected. The stimulation of one sense causes an involuntary reaction in one or more of the other senses. 3. Trina believes that when people have an onset of illness or they know what runs in their families, they should start strategizing about what would make them happy on their end-of-life journey. 4. Trina wants her work to be her legacy and she wants to be known as a "walker". Have you ever tasted music or experienced numbers as having genders? If so, you might be a synesthete! Synesthesia refers to subjective experiences in which a stimulus associated with one sensory modality (e.g., vision) is experienced as having properties associated with an entirely different modality (e.g. sound, texture, or smell). This “mixing” of the senses raises fascinating questions about human experience and the life of the mind. In episode 33, Ellie and David discuss the science and philosophy of synesthesia while poking fun at people who brag about being synesthetes at parties. Are synesthetes born or made? What forms of synesthesia exist? And how might one go about cultivating synesthetic perception?Works DiscussedDonielle Johnson, Carrie Allison, and Simon Baron-Cohen, “The Prevalence of Synesthesia: The Consistency Revolution”Simon Baron-Cohen, “Is There a Normal Phase of Synaesthesia in Development?”David Abram, The Spell of the SensuousKenneth Peacock, “Instruments to Perform Color-Music: Two Centuries of Technological Experimentation” Anina Rich, interview in "Synesthesia" episode of All in the Mind podcastJamie Ward and Peter Meijer. “Visual Experiences in the Blind Induced by an Auditory Sensory Substitution Device”Jerry Fodor, The Modularity of MindAdam Wager, “The Extra Qualia Problem: Synaesthesia and Representationism”John Locke, An Essay Concerning Human UnderstandingWebsite | overthinkpodcast.comInstagram & Twitter | @overthink_podEmail | Dearoverthink@gmail.comYouTube | Overthink podcast

Picking out notes on the piano with her mother before she could even talk, Jessica started her music training young and was on the path to becoming a professional organist. However, the onset of carpal tunnel syndrome put an abrupt stop to her plans, and the deep loss turned her to law as an alternative. Her pull towards music won out, and she returned as a conductor, with a lot of catching up to do. Jessica has a form of synaesthesia and experiencing music through colour gives her a vivid, sometimes overwhelming experience that informs the way she works. The first woman to study conducting at the Royal Academy of Music in London for over a decade, she is now a multi award-winning conductor who works all over the world from symphony orchestras, to the BBC Proms to world premieres at the Royal Opera House. The Scotsman describes her as ‘cool, contained, articulate and engaging' and Hugh Canning in The Times says she deserves a medal. Jessica speaks with great openness and integrity about her path through the industry. Find out more about Jessica and her work on her website or through her agent IMG Artists.

In an efforts to educate listeners about the unique experience of Synaesthesia, Karen and Kelly are taking a time-out from client stories today and describing how the gift itself works for both of them. Synaesthesia is a very personal experience and can differ quite a bit from person to person, so how fortunate for them that their gifts continue to develop in wonderfully similar ways! If you have questions or comments about today's show you can email Karen and Kelly at info@bysarlo.com. Enjoy!
