NOTE: Please pardon the technical issues with the sound. We did our best to capture all of Lester's stories though some of the audio & video glitched along the way. Welcome to Season 12 Episode 40 of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. This week's episode is one that's very special to me as it features my father's college teammate, Lester Sack, who is still competing on the world stage at age 87! Lester Sack didn't really start developing his tennis game until he showed up at the Tulane tennis courts as an 18-year-old freshman walk-on. He credits coach Emmett Pare with his success on the Tulane team and beyond. Lester has been competing on the Seniors and Super Seniors tour ever since graduating from Tulane in 1958, earning a ranking in the top 3 nationally in every age group. He is the epitome of a lifelong learner, even now continuing to make changes and improvements to his game. Here are just a few of his accomplishments in his illustrious tennis life: Played number 3 singles and number 1 doubles for Tulane University from 1956 to 1958 when the Green Wave won 3 Southeastern Conference Championships, and he and was ranked number 1 in doubles in the conference with partner Ron Holmberg Joined the professional tour and won singles titles in England and Germany, won the 1965 Canadian Open Doubles Championships, and reached the 3rd round of the 1966 French Open Mississippi resident until 1977 and one of the most dominant players of his generation, winning the Mississippi Open or Mississippi Closed every year and ranked number 1 in Mississippi Men's Open Singles and top 10 in the South every year from 1959 to 1975 Won numerous state and section age group tournaments and ranked 2nd in the nation in Men's 45 singles in 1984, won the 1984 Men's 45 Singles National Championship and ranked 7th and was a finalist at the Men's 55 National Clay Court Singles Championship in 1987 Represented the United States on the Dubler Cup, Gordon Cup, Gardner Mulloy Cup, Stevens Cup, and World Team Championship teams Served as the head coach of the USTA New Orleans Area Training Center and was an assistant pro for the Racquet Club of Memphis and the New Orleans Lawn Tennis Club Inducted into the Mississippi Tennis Hall of Fame in 1994, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1991, the Clarksdale & Cohoma County Mississippi Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Tennis Hall of Fame in 2009, the USTA Southern Tennis Hall of Fame in 2005, Tulane Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000 And Lester isn't even the oldest guy out there competing on the world stage! Take a look at this article on centenarian Henry Young who also played in the recent World Team Championships in Mallorca! I hope to have the chance to hit with Lester in the near future. In the meantime, I'll continue to follow his tennis journey as he makes his way into his 90's! If you're so inclined, please share this – and all our episodes! – with your tennis community. Today we look back at a classic MSMO from April of 2016. Carl Walters of Laurel landed his first newspaper job in the 1920s working as a printer's assistant. In this episode, he recalls how his love of sports led him to become a sports writer. Later, Walters began working for the Meridian Star. He discusses how the Meridian paper broke new ground by being the first to segregate the sports news into its own section. Walters became the first sports editor for the Jackson Daily News in 1946. Walters reflects on his career as a sports editor and columnist with pride and the innovations we take for granted today, such as the Fall Football Preview Guide. Walters was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. You can learn more by visiting their website. http://msfame.com/hall-of-fame/inductees/carl-walters-sr/

We head down South on this episode with Rick Cleveland, who has been named Mississippi Sportswriter of the Year a record 14 times. He discusses how sports helped to finally end segregation in his home state during his career of nearly 60 years. Rick shares anecdotes about Walter Payton, Brett Favre, and Archie Manning – father of Peyton and Eli – before and after they left Mississippi and became NFL stars. He recalls witnessing Tiger Woods winning the Masters for the first time. He tells us about point guard Ruthie Bolton, one of 20 children in her family, winning an Olympic gold medal. And Rick shares memories of the bitter and historic Egg Bowl rivalry between Ole Miss and Mississippi State. Cleveland, a native of Hattiesburg and resident of Jackson, has received more journalism awards than any sportswriter in Mississippi history. In January, he received his record 14th honor as the state's best sportswriter from the National Sports Media Association. Rick was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2016 and into the Hattiesburg Hall of Fame in 2018. He received the Richard Wright Award for Literary Excellence in 2011 and was inducted into the University of Southern Mississippi Communications Hall of Fame in 2018. In 2000, he was honored with the Distinguished Mississippian Award from Mississippi Press Association. Rick has covered sports since 1966. His first story was published at age 13 for the Hattiesburg American, where he worked throughout high school and college. After earning bachelor's degrees in journalism and history from the University of Southern Mississippi, he joined the Monroe (La.) News Star World for one year. Rick then returned to Mississippi at the Jackson Daily News before moving to that city's Clarion-Ledger as a beat reporter covering Ole Miss and Mississippi State. He later became the paper's sports editor and columnist. Since 2016, Cleveland has been writing a syndicated sports column for Mississippi Today after serving four years as executive director of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. Rick has covered 29 Super Bowls and has chronicled the NFL careers of Mississippi natives such as Payton, Favre, Manning, Jerry Rice, Steve McNair and Ray Guy. He has also covered several Masters tournaments, the 1996 Summer Olympics, the U.S. Open in golf, and Finals Four and College World Series appearances by Mississippi teams. Three generations of Rick's family have covered sports in Mississippi since 1946. His father, “Ace” Cleveland was a longtime sportswriter and editor at the Hattiesburg American before spending 33 years as sports information at Southern Miss. Ace worked 325 consecutive football games for the Golden Eagles, and he's enshrined in the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. Rick's brother, Bobby, spent 30 years as the outdoors writer for the Clarion-Ledger. Rick's son, Tyler, has covered Mississippi sports for more than a decade. Cleveland and his son, Tyler, host the podcast “Crooked Letter Sports,” which centers on Mississippi sports talk and stories. New episodes come out each Thursday. https://mississippitoday.org/crooked-letter-sports-podcast/ Rick has authored four books: · “It's More Than a Game” – a collection of Cleveland's columns. · “Vaught – The Man and his Legacy” about Ole Miss football coach Johnny Vaught. · “Boo – A Life in Baseball, Well-Lived” about former Boston Red Sox player Boo Ferriss. · “Mississippi's Greatest Athletes” Follow him on Twitter: @rick_cleveland Learn more about your ad choices. Younger Jackson State fans won't remember it but there was a time when the Jackson State Tigers dominated the SWAC every bit as much as Deion Sanders' Tigers are dominating now. Last week, Tillman was front and center as the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame announced its Class of 2023. This week, undefeated Jackson State plays Southern University as ESPN's Game Day comes to town. Seemed a perfect time for Lewis Tillman to join the podcast.
