Why Corbin Burnes Took Less Money to Play for Diamondbacks, How Josh Naylor Will Fit in Arizona

Last week, the Arizona Diamondbacks made the definitive most shocking move of the offseason, signing 2021 National League Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes to a six-year, $210 million contract. Days earlier, the Diamondbacks traded for first baseman Josh Naylor, from the Cleveland Guardians. Arizona Diamondbacks on SI publisher and Diamondbacks beat reporter Jack Sommers visits the Jack Vita Show to break it all down! Jack Sommers has the inside scoop on how the Burnes' signing — which seemingly no one saw coming — came to fruition. Burnes reportedly passed on more lucrative offers from the San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays, preferring instead to play in Arizona, where he lives in the offseason with his family. The contract also includes deferrals; Jack Sommers explains how the deferrals work. Earlier in the week, the Diamondbacks filled a gaping hole at first base, acquiring All-Star Josh Naylor in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect Slade Cecconi and a Competitive Balance Round B Draft pick. Naylor will replace three-time Gold Glove Award winner Christian Walker, who signed a three-year, $60 million deal with the Houston Astros. Former Diamondbacks great Paul Goldschmidt had been linked to the team as a possible replacement for Walker, but instead signed a one-year, $12.5 million contract with the New York Yankees. Jack and Jack share their thoughts on game of musical chairs being played among first baseman! What do they think of the Naylor trade, and the landing spots for Walker and Goldy? Finally, Jack and Jack share some thoughts on miraculous 2024 Arizona State Sun Devils football season, which resulted in a thrilling, double-overtime loss in the Peach Bowl on New Years Day. This episode was taped a day before the Bowl Game; Jack and Jack reflect on a monumental season for the program that nobody saw coming. Was this the most stunning season for an Arizona sports team in the state's history? Unfortunately, we encountered some technical difficulties when recording this episode, thus, our audio isn't up to the high standards set for the Jack Vita Show. We apologize, and expect to do MUCH better next time! You can follow Jack on Twitter, @shoewizard59, and check out his work at Diamondbacks on SI!

Episode 263 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we're back on the diamond discussing Ryne Sandberg. Thought by some in the Philadelphia Phillies' organization that he was nothing more than a Utility Infielder, the talented Sandberg emerged as a star during the 1980s & 1990s for the Chicago Cubs. The power-hitting Second Baseman was a 10x All-Star, a 9x Gold Glove Award honoree and a 7x Silver Slugger winner. Sandberg won the NL MVP in 1984, and helped the Cubs capture the NL East that season and in 1989. A .285 career hitter, Sandberg finished his Hall of Fame career with the then-record for most Home Runs by a Second Baseman of all-time. After he retired, Sandberg managed in the Minor Leagues for the Cubs. Then his baseball career came full-circle when served as the Manager in Philadelphia from 2013-2015. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-sports-experience-pod/support

At last year's General Managers Meetings, Farhan Zaidi was a popular interviewee as the industry anticipated the San Francisco Giants' president of baseball operations to make a serious run at reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge in free agency. The Giants did in fact pursue Judge and other marquee players last winter, but once again came home empty handed.Well, those meetings are back underway, and Zaidi did share some of the SF Giants' plans for the winter. Once again, like last offseason, Zaidi talked about the Giants' desire to get younger and more athletic. Last year, the Giants and Zaidi didn't really follow through on that promise, unless you count all of the minor league callups throughout the season. But free agent signings such as Michael Conforto and Mitch Haniger didn't really fall into that category and both had disappointing seasons. One player who did not have a disappointing season was Giants rookie catcher Patrick Bailey. Bailey was so good defensively that he probably deserved to the the Gold Glove Award at the position, but he was snubbed despite being a finalist, which is an honor in and of itself. Bailey was the best framer in MLB and his pop times were exceptional. The potential coaching staff under new SF Giants manager Bob Melvin is also discussed, with names like Matt Williams and Bryan Price being floated with regularity. Zaidi said the Giants' staff under Melvin should be finalized this week.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The starting pitching was quite nice for the Rox. Peter Lambert, Kyle Freeland and Chris Flexen did their job to put Bud Black's club in winning position. Which role player had a big game on Sunday against Dylan Cease? Which of the young hitters was most impressive against the ChiSox? And is Lenyn Sosa the most uniquely named ballplayer in MLB right now?
