Anthony Cavallo's year long absence from the western districts riding ranks continues to arouse the curiosity of his many friends and TAB followers. A veteran of almost forty years in the saddle, Cavallo sustained multiple injuries in what appeared to be a simple fall at Wellington. Two fractured vertebrae in the upper back required a spinal fusion and the insertion of a metal plate. That plate is to be removed at the end of June, after which the veteran will determine the course of his future. Enquiries have been numerous about a likely return to the saddle for one of country racing's most respected jockeys. “Choco” joins the podcast with his own version of events. He expresses his gratitude for the many messages of encouragement he's received. Anthony says he'd love to keep riding but intends to accept the judge's decision. He looks back on the Wellington fall and says he had absolutely no warning. The jockey summarises an endless list of injuries. He reflects on many race falls but says none of his injuries have been below the waist. Cavallo looks back on one other nasty spill on the very same racetrack. He looks back on the way in which his apprenticeship was arranged by his father and an uncle. He pays tribute to his master Ray Guy. Anthony speaks freely about the nickname he was given by a co-worker soon after he joined the guy stable. He still gets that nickname from the majority of racing people. Like most jockeys he has vivid recollections of his first winning ride 39 years ago. He looks back on his one and only ride on multiple Gr 1 winner Potrero, the horse he rates the best he's ridden in a race. Tony hasn't forgotten a stakes win at Randwick on a 140/1 pop called Reign of Honour. He got to ride the same filly in a Gr 1 two weeks later. He looks back on the day at Warwick Farm when he won a Gr 3 race under the most unusual of circumstances. Cavallo looks back on a feature country win which came out of the blue when Glen Boss had to forfeit the ride. The veteran spent almost 8 years out of Australia  during his long riding career. He reflects on stints in Singapore/Malaysia, Macau and Abu Dabi. He goes back to 2016 when he was still riding a power of trackwork at Randwick, but spending Saturdays at country meetings. Finally it made good sense to base himself in the central west. The jockey talks about his first country retreat at Cudgegong Waters near Mudgee. He loved the lifestyle. He continued his usual practice of riding regular trackwork. He formed a successful partnership with dubbo horseman Kody Nestor. Tony says he also got to Orange trackwork once a week for trainers like Alison Smith, Peter Cornish and Cindy Monaghan. He also rode work for Bob Howe on an abandoned picnic racecourse. He talks of his recent move into Mudgee township where he lives with partner Amanda. Anthony rarely rides in the city these days but has been able to win four editions of the TAB Highway. He looks back on those four wins. With his all important medical assessment due in a month, he's already contemplating the possibility of having to quit the saddle. He says he'd love to have some contact with horses going forward. It's a laid back chat with the little fellow of Italian descent who was besotted with thoroughbreds from the moment he walked into Ray Guy's Rosehill stables.

The decade of the 1970s saw the sport grow by leaps and bounds, thanks mostly to exciting players who quickly became icons. NFL players such as Joe Namath, Roger Staubach, O.J.Simpson, Terry Bradshaw, “Mean” Joe Greene and Fran Tarkenton are still considered household names today.During the 1970s, the growing millions of pro football fans also witnessed numerous exciting games and plays, many of which are still remembered and discussed today. Plays like Franco Harris' Immaculate Reception in 1972, or the original Hail Mary Pass in 1975, or the Sea of Hands game in 1974, or the Ghost to the Post game in 1977…so many memories, and all during one of the greatest decades in NFL history.Joe Zagorski's Pro Football in the 1970s podcast explores all the great memories that occurred in the NFL during that memorable decade. Welcome to Mysteries to Die For and this Toe Tag.I am TG Wolff and am here with Jack, my piano player and producer. This is normally a podcast where we combine storytelling with original music to put you at the heart of mystery. Today is a bonus episode we call a Toe Tag. It is the first chapter from a fresh release in the mystery, crime, and thriller genre.Today's featured release is The Big Lie by Gabriel Valjan. TG Wolff ReviewThe Big Lie is PI mystery. PI Shane Cleary is a popular guy. Everyone wants a favor from him. An MIA standard poodle, Latin tutoring for a mafioso's niece, pro bono work for a grand larceny defense, and a background check as SOP for getting serious. It's going to take the help of friends and enemies to keep all these balls in the air. Bottom line: The Big Lie is for you if you like stories where the pacing keeps up with the PI's fast talking. Strengths of the story. Shane Cleary is juggling four jobs plus keeping off his girlfriend's shit list. It's a lot for anyone. One of the strengths of THE BIG LIE is the skill with which author Gabriel Valjan lets us know exactly where we are at all times. He distinctly draws the characters making it easy for readers to differentiate between the cases. Shane as a character is well developed both with a full back history in Vietnam and with the Boston PD and a more recent history such as with this girlfriend, friends, cat, and answering service. He is a character readers can get behind, working from the moral high ground that lets him make hard and sometimes painful decisions. The story is set in a colorful Boston. It is not set in modern time, but I could not find reference to a year. Based on Shane having (and hating) a beeper, his having been in Viet Nam and worked for Boston PD, and a reference to punter Ray Guy, it seems to be set late 1970s to early 1980s. Shane navigating Boston's segregated Irish, Italian, Black, and Jewish communities adds a layer of complexity to his tasks that ups the stakes and heightens the entertainment. You can add the Boston PD hating Shane to the complications. This is the 5th book in the Shane Cleary Mystery series. I have not read the previous four. This can be read as a stand-alone as the mysteries Shane signs up for do not seem to be carried over from previous books. Character carryover is managed well with backstory snippets that get us what we need to know without dragging down in synopsis. When looking at the logic of the story lines and the role Shane has in resolving them, we have to look individually. Shane outsources the Latin tutoring and the background check, making his role more of a facilitator. The missing dog story had a strong, simple logic. Shane uses his talents with the missing dog case to get people beyond the fear of the dog's owner to be helpful. There was one spot that had me raising an eyebrow but the resolution is good without being predictable. The grand larceny case showed excellent detective skills and definitely would have died without Shane pushing at apparent dead ends. The logic of the criminal action is more complicated here. I ended up with a few questions about the setup, which happened before Shane was involved. The logic of Shane's actions is strong. He does his job, providing the defense with what it needs to combat a lazy if not corrupt PD, then wipes his hands, leaving it to the lawyers to pick up the work of charging the guilty party.Overall, The Big Lie, the 5th in the Shane Cleary Mysteries, was a highly enjoyable, entertaining read. Readers who prefer the fast pacing that comes with getting four stories in one book will keep the pages turning on this one.The Big Lie was released from Level Best Books - Historia and is promoted by Partners In Crime Tours and is available from

Joe Bowditch has been a familiar face on major Australian racetracks for more than 34 years. He's still plying his trade from a Victorian base at 47 years of age, and still riding winners. The evergreen jockey has crammed a lot into more than three decades of race riding in four states. The Joe Bowditch story makes for an interesting podcast. Currently under suspension,   he was happy to give me some time on the phone last weekend. He spoke to me from a Bundalong property owned by his great mate Luke Nolen. Joe talks about his recent Flemington win on Brazen Lady and acknowledges the support he receives from the Ellerton/Moodie stable. He talks of a long and successful association he's had with another Cranbourne trainer Robbie Griffiths.  Joe descends from a famous Riverina racing family. He shares memories of his father Des and uncles Barry and Wally- all accomplished jockeys. He remembers a wonderful friendship with trainer Ray Guy who was to have signed him up as an apprentice. When Ray died suddenly in 1992, his son Bryan became Joe's master. Joe recalls having been All Our Mob's strapper when he won at Rosehill the day after Ray's passing. The jockey recalls travelling to Mudgee to ride his first winner thirty one years ago. He looks back on his first couple of metropolitan winners.  Joe talks about a loan-out to the famous Lindsay Park operation in SA. Colin Hayes had retired but still had a presence. He talks of the quality of horseflesh he got to work with including a Melbourne Cup winner. Joe reflects on his working relationship with both David and Peter Hayes. Peter's death in a light plane crash impacted the entire staff at Lindsay Park. He remembers two star apprentices who came through the system during his time at the famous Angaston operation.  The jockey comments on the fact that the bulk of his career winners have been on the Morphettville track. Joe looks back on his first Gr 1 success in 2004. He had to change his tactics when the pace slowed suddenly in the middle stages of the SA Derby. He's ridden better horses than  Conservatorium but says the genuine gelding remains his all time favourite. He talks about his narrow defeat on a future multiple Gr 1 winner in the 1996 Fulham Park Plate. Joe's had his share of nasty falls. He talks about a crash at Morphettville in 2000 that left him with a long list of injuries. He looks back on an association with On A Jeune in 2004. He won a Cranbourne Cup on the gelding and went on to ride him in the Melbourne Cup of the same year. Joe looks back on a brief stint at Corowa as stable rider for the legendary Riverina trainer Richard Freyer. He talks of a surprise phone call from his former master Bryan Guy- a call that led him to a six year stay in Queensland. Joe reviews the highs and lows of that Queensland sojourn- some major wins and one serious race fall. The veteran jockey delights in talking about his association with the brilliant mare Viddora, the highlight of his long association with trainer Lloyd Kennewell. Joe summarises Viddora's wins in the Moir Stakes and Winterbottom Stakes. He says she was unlucky not to have added another Moir Stakes to her CV. He talks of exciting trips to Dubai and Hong Kong with the daughter of I Am Invincible. Joe finished among the tailenders on Viddora in the 2018 Everest, but won't forget the experience. He closes by paying tribute to wife Jen and his four children from two marriages- Heidi (21), Callam (19) and the dynamic duo (Jake 5) and Frankie (3). Great to catch up with a long serving and thoroughly dedicated professional jockey.

It's only two and a half years since we last spoke with Jon Grisedale but much water has flowed under the bridge since, and he's approaching a special birthday- special when you're talking about an active jockey. He'll be 60 on October 10th, but you'd never know it as the winners continue to flow including a couple over the recent Grafton July carnival. English born Grisedale was reluctant to do another interview so soon but I was able to talk him into it. Jon and his wife Donna remain delighted with their decision to move to Coffs Harbour in 2019. The jockey talks of a Lismore race fall soon after his arrival which was more serious than reported. He talks of the warm reception afforded him by local trainers. He established contacts by riding an enormous amount of trackwork. He's had to regulate his track commitments to a sane level but still rides work for a handful of great local supporters. Jon says the competition on the rivers is ferocious. He compliments Ben Looker who's approaching 120 winners for the season. The jockey looks back on Donna's early training career at Kembla Grange and outlines the reason for their move north. Jon recalls his first meeting with Donna when both were riding work for Chris Waller at Rosehill. He talks of the decade Donna spent working for the late Jack Denham. Jon talks of Donna's Coffs Harbour horses, and describes her strong points as a trainer. It's not widely known that Jon emigrated from England with his family at four years of age. He recalls the ocean voyage. He talks of his apprenticeship to the late Bede Horan at Rosehill, and has nothing but praise for the respected horseman. The jockey says Horan regularly took horses to bush meetings and took his apprentice with him. Jon says he literally “cut his teeth” on the western line.  He talks of the support offered by Rosehill trainer Ray Guy who supplied his first city winner. The mare in question would become a broodmare gem. Jon looks back on the special day at a Canterbury midweeker when he rode four winners. He says the media attention was unexpected. He talks of his association with Brian Mayfield-Smith. He says he was virtually number three rider for quite some time. Jon looks back on a brief association with Marauding. He has no doubt the big colt was the best horse he's ever ridden. He remembers a Tramway Hcp win on the genuine “bushie” Moville Peter and a Rosehill stakes win on Mount Verde. Jon talks of his love of riding in country areas and the success he enjoyed in major bush races. The veteran jockey reflects on what he calls the “lost year of his life”- a battle with a rare disease called Endocarditis or a severe infection of the inner lining of the heart. The prolonged illness cost him a kidney and twelve months away from the career he loved. Jon looks back on his association with Chris Waller soon after the NZ trainer set up shop at Rosehill.  He talks of Waller's training methods and recalls one humorous comment offered by the trainer after an unsuccessful day at Newcastle. Grisedale reflects on an injury sustained when a horse reared over with him in the Kembla parade yard. Doctors misinterpreted the initial x/rays. It's a bizarre story. He talks of the retirement that lasted only a few months. Jon talks of the move to Coffs Harbour and the stables he and Donna were able to purchase. This is a trip down memory lane with a remarkable jockey who will soon reach the age at which most riders are long retired. Thanks to ace photographer Steve Hart we've been able to add some wonderful photos of Jon Grisedale at the top of his game in the 1990's.

We head down South on this episode with Rick Cleveland, who has been named Mississippi Sportswriter of the Year a record 14 times. He discusses how sports helped to finally end segregation in his home state during his career of nearly 60 years. Rick shares anecdotes about Walter Payton, Brett Favre, and Archie Manning – father of Peyton and Eli – before and after they left Mississippi and became NFL stars. He recalls witnessing Tiger Woods winning the Masters for the first time. He tells us about point guard Ruthie Bolton, one of 20 children in her family, winning an Olympic gold medal. And Rick shares memories of the bitter and historic Egg Bowl rivalry between Ole Miss and Mississippi State.   Cleveland, a native of Hattiesburg and resident of Jackson, has received more journalism awards than any sportswriter in Mississippi history. In January, he received his record 14th honor as the state's best sportswriter from the National Sports Media Association. Rick was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2016 and into the Hattiesburg Hall of Fame in 2018. He received the Richard Wright Award for Literary Excellence in 2011 and was inducted into the University of Southern Mississippi Communications Hall of Fame in 2018. In 2000, he was honored with the Distinguished Mississippian Award from Mississippi Press Association.   Rick has covered sports since 1966. His first story was published at age 13 for the Hattiesburg American, where he worked throughout high school and college. After earning bachelor's degrees in journalism and history from the University of Southern Mississippi, he joined the Monroe (La.) News Star World for one year. Rick then returned to Mississippi at the Jackson Daily News before moving to that city's Clarion-Ledger as a beat reporter covering Ole Miss and Mississippi State. He later became the paper's sports editor and columnist. Since 2016, Cleveland has been writing a syndicated sports column for Mississippi Today after serving four years as executive director of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. Rick has covered 29 Super Bowls and has chronicled the NFL careers of Mississippi natives such as Payton, Favre, Manning, Jerry Rice, Steve McNair and Ray Guy. He has also covered several Masters tournaments, the 1996 Summer Olympics, the U.S. Open in golf, and Finals Four and College World Series appearances by Mississippi teams.   Three generations of Rick's family have covered sports in Mississippi since 1946. His father, “Ace” Cleveland was a longtime sportswriter and editor at the Hattiesburg American before spending 33 years as sports information at Southern Miss. Ace worked 325 consecutive football games for the Golden Eagles, and he's enshrined in the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. Rick's brother, Bobby, spent 30 years as the outdoors writer for the Clarion-Ledger. Rick's son, Tyler, has covered Mississippi sports for more than a decade.   Cleveland and his son, Tyler, host the podcast “Crooked Letter Sports,” which centers on Mississippi sports talk and stories. New episodes come out each Thursday. https://mississippitoday.org/crooked-letter-sports-podcast/   Rick has authored four books: ·   “It's More Than a Game” – a collection of Cleveland's columns. ·   “Vaught – The Man and his Legacy” about Ole Miss football coach Johnny Vaught. ·   “Boo – A Life in Baseball, Well-Lived” about former Boston Red Sox player Boo Ferriss. ·   “Mississippi's Greatest Athletes”   Follow him on Twitter: @rick_cleveland Learn more about your ad choices. The first podcast of November delivers a lot of sports heat as I've got lots to get off my chest on this latest edition. On deck: (3:40) The Houston Astros have finally reached the MLB mountaintop after losing in 2019 and last year as they capture their second title in six years. I'll recap the final four games of the series. Are they a modern baseball dynasty? As for the Phillies, there were two moves by the manager, Rob Thomson, that'll make you question well into the winter of what could've been if he didn't pull his starters in Games 4 & 6. Now that the World Series is complete, we can focus in on free agency. The Mets have re-signed closer Edwin Diaz to a record breaking contract. Was he worth the nine figure deal? (28:19) If you've listened to me over the weeks, months and years, you know I call it like I see it. As we approach the midway point of the NFL season, I wasn't going to wait another week to make this official. The first nine weeks have been an ABOMINATION! I go into great detail as to why that's the case and how this has been a season to forget. I'll share my thoughts on some of the key trades made at the deadline last week, the sale of the Washington Commanders, and the untimely deaths of Hall of Fame punter, Ray Guy. As well as, one time Hog of the Redskins offensive line, Dave Butz. (47:26) Georgia showed the nation who's the #1 team in college football. They suffocated the Tennessee Volunteers offense as they shut down their high octane offense on Saturday. There was also a huge loss by the Clemson Tigers as they get bounced by Notre Dame and Alabama loses their second game of the year, and in all likelihood, a shot at the college football playoff. I'll take a look at the college landscape as to who'll be in the running to play in the Final Four come New Year's Eve. (54:08) The NBA has a full blown soap opera that's running 24/7 it seems. It's called the Brooklyn Nets. The past week exemplified how from one day to the next, they've become a daily TV drama. From the firing of coach Steve Nash, to the rumors of signing former assistant and Celtics coach, Ime Udoka, the controversy surrounding Kyrie Irving posting on social media about a film with anti-semetic themes which led to a five game suspension, have made this franchise a three ring circus yet again. I'll talk about how well the Cavaliers have played after losing the first game and are on an eight game winning streak. (1:04:56) The Bruins averted a public relations disaster as they signed, then released 2020 prospect Mitchell Miller, who was convicted of bullying and racially abusing a kid many years ago. Was this justified? The Penguins have hit the skids as they're mired in a seven game losing streak. Does Sidney Crosby and company still have what it takes to be an elite team? And congratulations on another goal scoring milestone to Alexander Ovechkin becoming the all time leader in goals scored for one franchise at 787. On November 3rd, America lost one of the greatest all-around athletes of this or any age. Ray Guy was the first punter to ever be drafted in the first round into the NFL. During his career with the Oakland Raiders, he led the team to three Super Bowl victories. He was the first pure-punter to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. And he remains the standard by which all other kickers are judged. But Ray was so much more.   During his years with the University of Southern Mississippi, he dominated not only as a kicker, but as sports writer Rick Cleveland recalls, "besides being USM's first consensus Division I All-American as a punter, Guy also shares the school's pass interception record. He was the team's emergency quarterback and could throw the ball 80 yards, seemingly with no great effort." Ray also was a first class pitcher and once pitched a no-hitter.   Senior Writer with University Communications, David Tisdale joins Mississippi Moments Producer Ross Walton in a discussion of Guy's career and his memories of interviewing the Pro Football Hall of Famer for the Center for Oral History and Cultural Heritage. We then give a listen to the MSMO episode featuring excerpts from that interview, first broadcast in January of this year.   To read Rick Cleveland's elegant tribute to his friend Ray Guy, follow this link to the Mississippi Today article: https://mississippitoday.org/2022/11/03/ray-guy-best-athlete-mississippi

On the top of S2:E0068, talks starts with an NFL trend the likes we've not seen in decades (“Trade-o-rama”); the Chicago Bears bounce notable players; in Quinn, Roquan while snapping up a WR1 in Claypool; Andy Reid absolutely cannot catch a break; RIP to some sports greats including Ray Guy and John McVay; talk shifts to the World Series as things tighten up down the stretch; the pale hose get a new skipper (who?); big love for Coach Pops; not so much Leo for Kyrie and Nash; NCAAF chatter includes a crazy brawl at the Big House; and close with Scum-Bag-Of-The-Week ‘dishonors' go to Bill Self and associates leave a turd on the NCAA's dinner table and get a wrist slap. The rear starts with a super fun beer review, as the Bums litmus test Old Irving Brewing's Life Blood (6%ABV) a dark roasted Bock lager that was Rated in the Top 50 Beers for 2022 by Wine Enthusiast; Paddy makes an appearance at his high school reunion, and manages to ‘ghost intro' a nemesis; the Bums noodle restaurant etiquette when something unexpected happens; Eddie's goofy dog likes green doors, and only green doors; and close with a look at an emerging decentralized, federated social platform, and why Rocky's using it.  NB: A reminder that the Bums take listener requests seriously. Recorded on November 3, 2022 at B.O.M.'s global headquarters, Paddy's Southside Cave, in Chicago, IL USA.

Gio wants to see current players commenting on this.  Hour 2: The Eagles improved to 8-0 last night and we talked about their upcoming games against the Giants. They talked about Eagles GM Howie Roseman interacting with Eagles fans in Houston. The 49'ers could give the Eagles a run in the playoffs. Boomer doesn't understand the Bengals this season. He also thinks the Bears like what they see from Justin Fields and that's what we need to see from Zach Wilson. Jerry returns for an update and we wonder if Kyrie will ever play another game for the Nets. The Eagles improved to 8-0 with their win over the Texans. Lovie Smith was impressed by Jalen Hurts. Zach Wilson says they can hang with the Bills. Gio says all eyes on Zach this weekend. The Astros beat the Phillies to take a 3-2 World Series lead as they head back to Houston. Cashman and Boone will meet the media today at noon. The Rangers lost to the Bruins last night. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about Boomer's power rankings and he has the Giants in the middle, not upper echelon. Gio throws some other teams at Boomer to see if they are in the top third of the league.  Hour 3: Gio is going to see Jordan Davis at Mohegan Sun this weekend. He's also golfing this weekend. Boomer says Gio has been accepting a lot of invites. Al has an interesting take on marathon runners. He said if you run marathons, you are covering up for some trauma you've experienced in life. He also has the same theory on people with a lot of tattoos. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the Eagles moving to 8-0 with their win over the Texans last night. Rob Saleh talks about the Jets defense heading into this week's game against the Bills. The Astros beat the Phillies as Noah Syndergaard gave up a HR in his start. Justin Verlander got his first World Series win. In the final segment of the hour, Dan in Carteret is giving away a used t-shirt on Twitter. We also talked about Kyrie and Gio said if KD supports Kyrie coming back, he'll be back. If KD doesn't support it, Kyrie is done.  Hour 4: Cashman and Boone will meet the media today, presumably to announce that they will both be back. What could Cashman say today that would make fans happy that he's returning? Gio has some ideas. Jerry returns for an update but first we talk about C-Lo and Gio both going to Mohegan Sun for the Jordan Davis concert this weekend. Is Steve Cohen colluding with the Yankees on the Aaron Judge situation? The Astros beat the Phillies in game five to take a 3-2 series lead. The Eagles improve to 8-0 by beating the Texans. The Bruins beat the Rangers and we hear some play by play. In the final segment of the week, our NFL Picks starring Yussef!

EPISODE 70: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: It goes without saying Trump should not merely already be under indictment - he should be under 24/7 guard in a SuperMax Prison. But he's not. So we have to view last night's leak about the Department of Justice considering a Special Trump Counsel as "good news." (2:45) CNN's report says the Special Counsel would be appointed as soon as Trump officially declares he's running (he came close last night at one of his Cult Rallies) (3:53) CNN also reported something strange: that DOJ has hired two high-priced prosecutors in advance, just in case they do decide to prosecute. Are you kidding? Who does this? You don't hire guys away from Law Firm Partnerships 'just in case' (5:55) Plus CNN discovered one of the hirings because the guy UPDATED HIS LINKED-IN PROFILE! (8:23) In actual stuff that's happened, CREW, which got a New Mexico County Commissioner removed from office for insurrection based on the 14th Amendment, says it will sue to get Trump similarly barred from serving (11:00) All of which leads me to invoke 19th Century British Prime Minister William E. Gladstone and an immortal quote about him supplied by one of his fiercest critics, Henry Labouchere. B-Block (14:25) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Calto, in New York (15:17) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Golly, I guessed right: Elon Musk IS willing to sell YOUR Twitter identity to somebody else. I think we call this "blackmail." Plus CNBC fires Shepard "I Come From A Town Full Of Secrets" Smith. (17:54) IN SPORTS: World Series Game 5 Nailbiter; maybe those Phillies Powder Blue unis aren't good luck; and an imperfection in Don Larsen's 1956 Perfect Game you may not know about. Finally, Kyrie Irving is suspended. (24:37) WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: A lawyer age-shaming the victim in an indecent exposure case and a medical school that played with the 1918 Influenza vie with Laura Ingraham for the honors C-Block (29:57) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: "The Luck Of Jad Peters."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
