Talking further on National Road Safety Week starting today – a timesurely to reflect on the current poor driving standard in this state, Thecampaign is national however we still don’t have a set of national roadrules – individual states still singing from a different hymn book. NationalRoad Safety Week is the work of Peter Frazer who daughter Sarah wastragically killed by a truck driver in a totally avoidable crash on the HumeHighway at Mittagong in Feb 2012 when her car broke down. Tow truckdriver Geoffrey Clark and Sarah were loading her car when they were killedby the passing truck. Soon after N.S.W. expanded the road rule requiringdrivers to slow down to 40km/h for emergency responders to also includetow truck and roadside assistance workers. Amazingly, Victoria onlyannounced this week that from July 1 the current road rule requiringdrivers and motorcycle riders to slow down to 40km/h for police, fire, andambulance would be expanded - now including tow trucks, roadsideassistance and incident response vehicles displaying flashing lights. Itbeggars’ belief that after Sarah Frazer’s tragic death in 2012 it’s takenVictoria 13 years to implement a road rule which surely should have beennational road rule from Day 1. Welcome to this special World Braille Day episode of Talking Vision, to start off this week you'll hear a small excerpt from a piece of music called “Follow Me”, a favourite of listeners from past years which comes to us from the annual braille music camp, taking place in Mittagong in New South Wales for both young students and seasoned veterans of braille music alike across Australia. We have an all-braille program lined up today in celebration of World Braille Day, which marks the anniversary of the birth of the inventor of braille, Louis Braille, every 4th of January. You may remember back in 2020 Stella Glorie caught up with Jordie Howell and Micala Schmidt to talk all things braille music, that interview is coming up later in the show, but first Sam catches up with avid braille reader Tess Herbert, who talks about the highlights and challenges of reading as someone who is totally blind, and to finish up today we feature another popular favourite song from the annual Braille Music Camp, "How Lovely are the Messengers". It’s now twelve years since Norm Lang put away the harness and hopples for the last time. The game of bowls now commands his full attention. The eighty five year old has vivid memories of his exciting journey with Steel Jaw- the $5000 horse he took from a maiden pace to a NZ Cup in a very short time. He covers the whole Steel Jaw story, and for trots fans it’s riveting listening. Norm takes us back to his days as an Ampol agent at Mittagong, and his introduction to trotting by local trainer George Walton. He remembers his first winning drive at Canowindra and the near accident before he even left the parade yard. The veteran horseman recalls his purchase of a broodmare and the success he had with her two foals. Norm pays tribute to a select group of horses who took him to a prominent spot on the Harold Park trainer’s ladder. He talks about the reputation he enjoyed of being able to keep horses up for long periods of time. Norm quit race driving in the 1991/92 season but continued to train for another 17 years. He explains the reason for that surprise decision. Sounding much younger than his 85 years, Norm Lang reviews a very rewarding career.

Katy Gilles shares her story of seeking a deeper connection with God. And it was from this experience that Katy went on to create places for others to connect. Spaces where people can be authentic, can be heard and can be held. In her role as a Family Educator in the Sydney Archdiocese Katy created spaces for mothers and children under five years to meet weekly and over the last six years she has created opportunities for women to gather annually for a retreat at the Hermitage in Mittagong. During these years Katy has witnessed first-hand the way in which our relationships deepen through our willingness to be vulnerable. For all those seeking to create spaces for parents to meet and share their spirituality this Episode provides invaluable wisdom and experience.  "In order for connection to happen, we have to allow ourselves to be seen, really seen." This week, it's the cane that links participants as we celebrate on October 15, International White Cane Day. We drop in on an event at Vision Australia Kooyong in Melbourne for children and their families and then hear from an elite athlete who is a strong advocate for the cane. At the White Cane Day event, Vision Australia Ambassador Gorgi Coghlan observes how children must be supported to maximise life opportunities. Children and parents explain the benefits of an occasion like this where they can get to meet and share experience. Then, Winter Paralympian Melissa Perrine tells of her alpine skiing and how the cane has made a positive difference for her. Program participants are: • Gorgi Coghlan, TV personality, vocal performer and Vision Australia ambassador; • Than Autran, 11 year old student who is blind; • Kelly Goodfellow, mother of a child who is blind; • Sam Valavanis, a 12 year old student who is blind; • Melissa Perrine, a Winter Paralympian from Mittagong in NSW. Let Talking Vision be your national radio reference on blindness and low vision. A Vision Australia Radio production, it is broadcast nationally each week on over 25 RPH and other community stations.
