A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 179In today's episode, I'm taking a moment to reflect on our incredible conversation last week with Iron Ramen — a gluten free Japanese restaurant built from the ground up after their son's coeliac diagnosis. We'll explore the powerful idea of doing one thing and doing it really well, and how that can lead to incredible growth — not just in business, but in life. I'll also talk about how Iron Ramen's journey reminds me of the concept of Ikigai, a Japanese philosophy about finding your reason for being, something I first came across in a book that had a big impact on me.Finding inspiration and motivation can feel tough sometimes in our gluten free lives, especially when coeliac disease can make things harder. But stories like Iron Ramen's — and the conversation I'm about to have next week with a podcast listener — show that if you don't let your diagnosis hold you back, you can find your purpose and live a great gluten free life.I'll also share a personal update on how I believe I'm finding my own Ikigai through this podcast, our community, and everything we're building at A Gluten Free Family. And, excitingly, for the first time, I'll introduce something I've wanted to do for a long time: sharing a listener's story. Next week, you'll hear from someone who has gained a lot from this podcast, and I'll sit down with them to hear their gluten free journey and how this community has impacted their life.In This Episode:A recap of our last episode with Iron Ramen: doing one thing, doing it well, and growing from thereHow a son's coeliac diagnosis inspired a thriving gluten free businessAn introduction to Ikigai: what it means and how it applies to living well with coeliac diseaseHow Iron Ramen found their Ikigai — and how it's inspiring others in the gluten-free communityMy personal journey with finding Ikigai through A Gluten Free Family and this podcastHow we can all find motivation and purpose after a coeliac diagnosisA look ahead: a special interview with a listener who found support and encouragement through this podcastHow finding your gluten free Ikigai can then help others in a similar situation to you Next week's guest: previewing our chat with Stephen about pushing through challenges and not letting anything stop youWhat is Ikigai? Ikigai (生き甲斐) is a Japanese concept meaning “a reason for being.” It's the sweet spot where what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for all come together. It's about living with purpose, passion, and balance — even in the small, everyday moments.Resources Mentioned:Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life by Héctor García and Francesc MirallesIron Ramen (link to website/socials)Connect with A Gluten Free Family:Instagram: @aglutenfreefamilyFacebook: A Gluten Free Podcast Facebook GroupWebsite: www.aglutenfreefamily.comDisclaimerThe content on this podcast is not a substitution for professional medical advice. A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 178 On today's episode, I'm joined by Leanne and Dave, the founders of Iron Ramen — Sydney's cult-favourite gluten free Japanese food truck. Their son's coeliac disease diagnosis, a deep love of Japanese food and culture, and a gap in the gluten free market all led to the creation of Iron Ramen — and since then, they've been winning over the coeliac and gluten free community one bowl at a time.I first tasted their incredible ramen at the Gluten Free Sydney Expo and instantly understood the hype — pulling off proper gluten free ramen is no easy feat! In this chat, we dive into their journey, the inspiration behind their menu, and the hard work and creativity it's taken to bring Iron Ramen to life.We cover:What Iron Ramen is and their mission to serve the coeliac communityHow their son's coeliac diagnosis changed everythingTheir lifelong love of Japanese food, culture, and creativityHow the idea for Iron Ramen came about (and the story behind the name!)The challenges of creating authentic gluten free ramen and Japanese fried dishesWhy they chose a food truck model and what it's really like running oneBuilding strong trust with the gluten free community and earning Coeliac Australia accreditationTheir best-selling dishes (spoiler: you'll be hungry by the end)Events and areas where you can find Iron RamenWhat's next for Iron Ramen and their collaborations with other gluten free businessesA moment that's had the biggest impact on their journey so farI loved this conversation with Leanne and Dave — not only because of their passion and creativity, but also because their story resonates so much with my own love for Japanese food, coeliac awareness, and heavy music (yes, the Iron Maiden-inspired name is no coincidence!).If you're in Sydney or see Iron Ramen at an event, do yourself a favour and go taste their food. It's businesses like this that are helping to grow and strengthen the gluten free community — one chat, and one bowl of ramen, at a time.Where to find Iron Ramen:

I reflect on how having so much choice can sometimes make eating out harder rather than easier when you live with celiac disease. You'll hear about my experiences using the Find Me Gluten Free app, how our meals ended up looking very different to what I usually prefer, and how understanding my human design helped me realise that sometimes having fewer options actually brings more peace, clarity, and enjoyment. If you've ever wished for more gluten free restaurants, or found yourself stressed by too many choices, this episode will help you reframe your thinking and find gratitude in simplicity. Plus, I share practical tips on how to confidently order off-menu to get exactly what you feel like eating while staying safe with celiac disease. A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 177 On this episode, I begin with a quick recap of last week's powerful chat with Professor Bob Anderson, where we explored the science behind coeliac disease and the complexities of its diagnosis and treatment. This week, I'm taking a more personal turn.I want to talk about something I know many of us carry: guilt. Whether you've been recently diagnosed or have been living gluten free for years, you may carry around the thought that your coeliac disease is your fault. I know I have and it's taken me a long time to shed that guilt. Admittedly, I'm still working on it! Is it something I did? Was it my genes? My lifestyle? My diet? Or the doctors who missed it?The truth is—coeliac disease is caused by a mixture of genetic and environmental factors that are completely out of our control. So let me say this clearly:
A Gluten Free PodcastEpisode 176On today's episode I chat with Associate Professor Dr Bob Anderson — a world-renowned gastroenterologist, immunologist and trailblazer in coeliac disease research. From his foundational work at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) to creating Nexvax2, leading Novoviah Pharmaceuticals, and becoming President of the International Society for the Study of Coeliac Disease (ISSCD), Bob has shaped the coeliac research landscape as we know it.We discuss how his career began, what he's most excited about in current research, and what's ahead for coeliac disease globally — including a look at ICDS 2026 in Melbourne. What We Cover

A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 169In today's episode of A Gluten Free Podcast, I share something personal in the hope that it might help you on your own coeliac and gluten free journey. I recently had a bone density scan, and the results showed that I have osteopenia. This was a screening I had to push for. It wasn't something that was automatically suggested to me. If I hadn't advocated for myself, I wouldn't have known about this issue or had the chance to address it early.Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition that affects much more than just digestion, and bone health is a big part of that. Many people with coeliac disease are at risk of low bone density due to years of malabsorption before diagnosis, yet routine follow-up care isn't always offered. That's why it's so important to be proactive about your health. In this episode, I talk about:My experience getting a bone density scan – what led me to push for it and how I felt about the results. The link between coeliac disease and osteopenia/osteoporosis – why coeliac disease can put people at risk for weakened bones. The importance of follow-up care for coeliac disease – what health checks should be part of ongoing management. Why you need to be your own best advocate – because if you don't speak up for your health, things can be missed.Follow-Up Care for Coeliac DiseaseCoeliac Australia provides clear guidelines on what follow-up care should look like for people with coeliac disease. This includes:Regular blood tests to check for nutrient deficiencies and coeliac antibodiesA repeat gastroscopy (if needed) to check for intestinal healingBone density scans for those at risk of osteoporosis or osteopeniaMonitoring for other autoimmune conditions linked to coeliac diseaseResources & LinksCoeliac Australia's follow-up care recommendations: https://coeliac.org.au/learn/ongoing-management/More information on coeliac disease and bone health: https://coeliac.org.au/article/osteoporosis/Join the ConversationHave you had a bone density scan? In today's episode I'm chatting about non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) through the lens of personal stories, including my own celiac diagnosis and my son's journey with NCGS. Explore the complexities of living with non-celiac gluten sensitivity, especially in children who endure symptoms just as severe as celiac disease itself. I share about our experiences with both public and private gastroenterologists, and how they ultimately led to my son's diagnosis. We'll tackle the misconception that gluten can occasionally be consumed with NCGS and argue for a more serious and diligent approach to its management.
