A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 184 In this episode of A Gluten Free Podcast, I'm joined by Dr. Andrew Williams, Principal Scientist at Westmead Children's Hospital in Sydney, Australia. Dr. Williams has spent decades researching coeliac disease and the complex immunological processes behind it. We explore how coeliac disease research has evolved, what still needs to change, and how early diagnosis in children could significantly improve health outcomes across Australia and globally. We dive into the inspiration behind Dr. Williams' career in immunological research, his earliest experiences working with children diagnosed with coeliac disease, and what initially drew his attention to this autoimmune condition. With so many people still undiagnosed, we talk about how Australia compares to other countries like Italy, where screening children for coeliac disease and Type 1 diabetes is already underway. We also discuss promising innovations like the Novoleukin blood test—a tool being developed to detect coeliac disease even in people who are already on a gluten-free diet. This episode offers a hopeful and practical look into how coeliac disease awareness, testing methods, and healthcare systems could shift for the better—if we focus our efforts in the right places. What We Cover:How Dr. Andrew Williams became involved in coeliac disease researchWhat we knew (and didn't know) about coeliac disease when he began his careerMajor milestones in coeliac disease research over the past few decadesReal-life stories from the clinic that shaped his perspectiveThe critical need for early diagnosis in children with coeliac diseaseWhy so many Australians remain undiagnosed and what needs to changeHow other countries like Italy are taking proactive steps to improve coeliac screeningThe future of coeliac disease testing, including the upcoming Novoleukin diagnostic toolWhat parents of children with coeliac disease need to knowHow one powerful conversation reminded him why this work matters

A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 183 – Time for a Gluten Free AuditWelcome back! In today's solo episode, we're taking an unexpected but surprisingly helpful detour… into taxes. Yep — sounds dull, but stick with me! As my wife Bec (who handles all the books for my businesses — legend!) and I went through receipts and plans, it got me thinking: this same process can help us check in with how we're managing coeliac disease and our gluten free lifestyle. So, today I'm inviting you to do a gluten free audit with me.Living with coeliac disease isn't a “set and forget” situation. Whether you're newly diagnosed or a seasoned gluten free pro, it's easy to drift into habits that aren't serving you anymore. Taking time to reflect can make a huge difference — not for perfection, but for progress. Here are a few powerful questions we'll explore together:What's going well in your gluten free life?Where are you just getting by?What habits support you?Which ones need a rethink? To help guide this process, I break the audit into five key areas:1. Health Check-UpsWhen was your last coeliac blood test? Are you staying on top of things like iron, B12, and vitamin D levels? If you've been diagnosed, did you get proper follow-up testing? Regular health check-ins keep us informed, empowered, and thriving — not just surviving.2. Dining OutDo you feel confident eating out or does it cause stress? Are you asking the right questions, checking menus properly, and setting boundaries when needed? I'll share some prompts to help you feel more at ease. (And if you haven't yet, check out my chat with Anthony Dionne on how to dine out gluten free — it's full of practical tips.)3. Making Gluten Free Food at HomeAre you stuck in a food rut? Or maybe relying on packaged foods more than you'd like? Let's look at how you can bring more joy and variety back into your gluten free kitchen. Cooking at home should be safe, nourishing — and fun!4. Preparation & PlanningAre you prepared for busy days, travel, or unexpected social events? Planning can make life smoother — whether that's packing safe snacks, prepping meals, or thinking ahead to events. Small changes here can lead to big results.5. Support NetworkWho's in your corner? Living gluten free can feel isolating. Whether it's friends, family, online communities, or professionals, having people who get it makes a real difference. And if you're feeling alone, I want you to know I'm here to support you too.I'll also share my own honest reflections — where I'm doing well and where I still have work to do. Because let's be real: none of us are perfect. That's not the goal. What matters is checking in, adjusting where needed, and giving ourselves the chance to grow.Resources mentioned:

A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 181 Today I'm sharing something a little more personal — 7 symptoms I experienced before being diagnosed with coeliac disease. It's a story I haven't shared in full detail for a while, but after last week's episode, it felt like the right time. Before we get into it, I want to thank Stephen, a longtime listener of the podcast, for joining me last week and opening up about his own coeliac journey. His honesty and insight really struck a chord with so many of you — and with me. It reminded me how powerful it is when we share our stories. If you haven't listened to Stephen's episode yet, I highly recommend going back and giving it a listen. In today's episode, I'm diving into my own pre-diagnosis experience. Like many others, I didn't only have the “typical” gut symptoms that people often associate with coeliac disease. Instead, I was dealing with a mix of physical, emotional, and mental symptoms that took years to connect to what was really going on.Here's what I was experiencing before my diagnosis:Ongoing anxiety that I couldn't explainEpisodes of depression and low moodPersistent joint and back painRecurring, painful mouth ulcersMood swings and irritability that impacted my relationshipsRegular constipation Reflux that would come and go randomlyLooking back, I can now see how all these symptoms were signs that my body was crying out for help — but at the time, it was confusing, frustrating, and exhausting. In this episode, I'll talk through each of those symptoms, what I thought they were caused by at the time, and how I eventually came to understand they were all connected to coeliac disease. My goal is that by sharing my story, it might help someone else piece together their own health puzzle or feel less alone in knowing they weren't the only one dealing with these symptoms. Whether you're at the beginning of your gluten free journey or supporting someone who is, this episode is for you.Links & Resources:

Stephen first reached out after connecting with me on Instagram and feeling our coeliac disease diagnosis stories were similar. Since then, we've stayed in touch, sharing messages, stories, and updates about life with coeliac disease. It's been so encouraging to connect over this shared journey—and now, we're finally having a face-to-face chat on the pod! Stephen opens up about his personal diagnosis story and how his daughter's coeliac diagnosis soon followed. We talk about the emotional and practical impact that had on their family, and how they've navigated it together. Stephen also speaks candidly about some frustrating challenges at work—especially dealing with colleagues who struggle to understand the seriousness of coeliac disease and the need for a strict gluten free diet.Despite being relatively new to his diagnosis, Stephen hasn't let it slow him down. He's already travelled overseas multiple times and shares what he learned through those experiences—the wins, the tough moments, and how to better prepare for gluten free travel. We also talk about what it's like living with coeliac disease as a guy, especially in social settings, and how those dynamics can sometimes feel isolating or misunderstood. One of the things I admire most about Stephen is his love for the outdoors. He regularly shares his hiking adventures on Instagram, and in this chat, he explains how staying active and being in nature has helped him both physically and mentally as he adapts to life with coeliac disease.

I'll also talk about how Iron Ramen's journey reminds me of the concept of Ikigai, a Japanese philosophy about finding your reason for being, something I first came across in a book that had a big impact on me.Finding inspiration and motivation can feel tough sometimes in our gluten free lives, especially when coeliac disease can make things harder. But stories like Iron Ramen's — and the conversation I'm about to have next week with a podcast listener — show that if you don't let your diagnosis hold you back, you can find your purpose and live a great gluten free life.I'll also share a personal update on how I believe I'm finding my own Ikigai through this podcast, our community, and everything we're building at A Gluten Free Family. A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 169In today's episode of A Gluten Free Podcast, I share something personal in the hope that it might help you on your own coeliac and gluten free journey. I recently had a bone density scan, and the results showed that I have osteopenia. This was a screening I had to push for. It wasn't something that was automatically suggested to me. If I hadn't advocated for myself, I wouldn't have known about this issue or had the chance to address it early.Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition that affects much more than just digestion, and bone health is a big part of that. Many people with coeliac disease are at risk of low bone density due to years of malabsorption before diagnosis, yet routine follow-up care isn't always offered. That's why it's so important to be proactive about your health. In this episode, I talk about:My experience getting a bone density scan – what led me to push for it and how I felt about the results. The link between coeliac disease and osteopenia/osteoporosis – why coeliac disease can put people at risk for weakened bones. The importance of follow-up care for coeliac disease – what health checks should be part of ongoing management. Why you need to be your own best advocate – because if you don't speak up for your health, things can be missed.Follow-Up Care for Coeliac DiseaseCoeliac Australia provides clear guidelines on what follow-up care should look like for people with coeliac disease. This includes:Regular blood tests to check for nutrient deficiencies and coeliac antibodiesA repeat gastroscopy (if needed) to check for intestinal healingBone density scans for those at risk of osteoporosis or osteopeniaMonitoring for other autoimmune conditions linked to coeliac diseaseResources & LinksCoeliac Australia's follow-up care recommendations: https://coeliac.org.au/learn/ongoing-management/More information on coeliac disease and bone health: https://coeliac.org.au/article/osteoporosis/Join the ConversationHave you had a bone density scan? A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 165If you have coeliac disease, you've likely experienced gut issues, bloating, fatigue, or discomfort even when following a strict gluten-free diet. But have you ever wondered—is gluten always to blame? Many people with coeliac disease assume every symptom they experience is due to gluten exposure. However, other factors such as IBS, food intolerances, FODMAPs, stress, and gut imbalances can cause similar reactions. After my recent interview with Dr. Kim Faulkner Hogg, a leading coeliac disease dietitian, I began reflecting on my own experiences with gut health, including my diagnosis with IBS and my journey navigating the Low FODMAP diet.In today's episode of Gluten Free Thoughts, I'll dive into why gluten might not always be the culprit, share my personal story of living with both coeliac disease and IBS, and discuss how lifestyle factors like stress, mindfulness, and diet changes have transformed my gut health. If you're struggling with persistent gut symptoms, unexplained bloating, or ongoing health issues even after going gluten-free, this episode will help you explore other potential causes and solutions. What I'll cover:* Why it's important to slow down and be in touch with your own physical and mental health within this current fast-paced world * How meditation and yoga have been so positive in my own life * Recording and releasing sound bath with Annie & Justin last fortnight on the podcast * Reflecting on Kim Faulkner Hogg's episode, specifically in relation to other food intolerances and triggers * Thinking I was getting consistently glutened after my coeliac disease diagnosis* My own IBS and Low FODMAP story * Remembering gluten isn't always the source of symptoms* Areas I've been focussing on to improve my own physical and mental health recently* Teaser of next week's episode with Celiac Cruise founder Maureen Basye LinksListen to Dr Kim Faulkner Hogg episode Listen to sound bath with Annie & Justin episode Visit our websiteJoin A Gluten Free Podcast Facebook GroupGet in touchYou can find me on Instagram @a.gffamily or send an email to aglutenfreefamily@gmail.com
