7 Symptoms I Experienced Before My Coeliac Disease Diagnosis

A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 181 Today I'm sharing something a little more personal — 7 symptoms I experienced before being diagnosed with coeliac disease. It's a story I haven't shared in full detail for a while, but after last week's episode, it felt like the right time. Before we get into it, I want to thank Stephen, a longtime listener of the podcast, for joining me last week and opening up about his own coeliac journey. His honesty and insight really struck a chord with so many of you — and with me. It reminded me how powerful it is when we share our stories. If you haven't listened to Stephen's episode yet, I highly recommend going back and giving it a listen. In today's episode, I'm diving into my own pre-diagnosis experience. Like many others, I didn't only have the “typical” gut symptoms that people often associate with coeliac disease. Instead, I was dealing with a mix of physical, emotional, and mental symptoms that took years to connect to what was really going on.Here's what I was experiencing before my diagnosis:Ongoing anxiety that I couldn't explainEpisodes of depression and low moodPersistent joint and back painRecurring, painful mouth ulcersMood swings and irritability that impacted my relationshipsRegular constipation Reflux that would come and go randomlyLooking back, I can now see how all these symptoms were signs that my body was crying out for help — but at the time, it was confusing, frustrating, and exhausting. In this episode, I'll talk through each of those symptoms, what I thought they were caused by at the time, and how I eventually came to understand they were all connected to coeliac disease. My goal is that by sharing my story, it might help someone else piece together their own health puzzle or feel less alone in knowing they weren't the only one dealing with these symptoms. Whether you're at the beginning of your gluten free journey or supporting someone who is, this episode is for you.Links & Resources:

A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 180Today's episode is a special one. I'm joined by Stephen, a long-time listener and passionate supporter of A Gluten Free Podcast. Stephen first reached out after connecting with me on Instagram and feeling our coeliac disease diagnosis stories were similar. Since then, we've stayed in touch, sharing messages, stories, and updates about life with coeliac disease. It's been so encouraging to connect over this shared journey—and now, we're finally having a face-to-face chat on the pod! Stephen opens up about his personal diagnosis story and how his daughter's coeliac diagnosis soon followed. We talk about the emotional and practical impact that had on their family, and how they've navigated it together. Stephen also speaks candidly about some frustrating challenges at work—especially dealing with colleagues who struggle to understand the seriousness of coeliac disease and the need for a strict gluten free diet.Despite being relatively new to his diagnosis, Stephen hasn't let it slow him down. He's already travelled overseas multiple times and shares what he learned through those experiences—the wins, the tough moments, and how to better prepare for gluten free travel. We also talk about what it's like living with coeliac disease as a guy, especially in social settings, and how those dynamics can sometimes feel isolating or misunderstood. One of the things I admire most about Stephen is his love for the outdoors. He regularly shares his hiking adventures on Instagram, and in this chat, he explains how staying active and being in nature has helped him both physically and mentally as he adapts to life with coeliac disease.

A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 179In today's episode, I'm taking a moment to reflect on our incredible conversation last week with Iron Ramen — a gluten free Japanese restaurant built from the ground up after their son's coeliac diagnosis. We'll explore the powerful idea of doing one thing and doing it really well, and how that can lead to incredible growth — not just in business, but in life. I'll also talk about how Iron Ramen's journey reminds me of the concept of Ikigai, a Japanese philosophy about finding your reason for being, something I first came across in a book that had a big impact on me.Finding inspiration and motivation can feel tough sometimes in our gluten free lives, especially when coeliac disease can make things harder. But stories like Iron Ramen's — and the conversation I'm about to have next week with a podcast listener — show that if you don't let your diagnosis hold you back, you can find your purpose and live a great gluten free life.I'll also share a personal update on how I believe I'm finding my own Ikigai through this podcast, our community, and everything we're building at A Gluten Free Family. And, excitingly, for the first time, I'll introduce something I've wanted to do for a long time: sharing a listener's story. Next week, you'll hear from someone who has gained a lot from this podcast, and I'll sit down with them to hear their gluten free journey and how this community has impacted their life.In This Episode:A recap of our last episode with Iron Ramen: doing one thing, doing it well, and growing from thereHow a son's coeliac diagnosis inspired a thriving gluten free businessAn introduction to Ikigai: what it means and how it applies to living well with coeliac diseaseHow Iron Ramen found their Ikigai — and how it's inspiring others in the gluten-free communityMy personal journey with finding Ikigai through A Gluten Free Family and this podcastHow we can all find motivation and purpose after a coeliac diagnosisA look ahead: a special interview with a listener who found support and encouragement through this podcastHow finding your gluten free Ikigai can then help others in a similar situation to you Next week's guest: previewing our chat with Stephen about pushing through challenges and not letting anything stop youWhat is Ikigai? Ikigai (生き甲斐) is a Japanese concept meaning “a reason for being.” It's the sweet spot where what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for all come together. A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 169In today's episode of A Gluten Free Podcast, I share something personal in the hope that it might help you on your own coeliac and gluten free journey. I recently had a bone density scan, and the results showed that I have osteopenia. This was a screening I had to push for. It wasn't something that was automatically suggested to me. If I hadn't advocated for myself, I wouldn't have known about this issue or had the chance to address it early.Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition that affects much more than just digestion, and bone health is a big part of that. Many people with coeliac disease are at risk of low bone density due to years of malabsorption before diagnosis, yet routine follow-up care isn't always offered. That's why it's so important to be proactive about your health. In this episode, I talk about:My experience getting a bone density scan – what led me to push for it and how I felt about the results. The link between coeliac disease and osteopenia/osteoporosis – why coeliac disease can put people at risk for weakened bones. The importance of follow-up care for coeliac disease – what health checks should be part of ongoing management. Why you need to be your own best advocate – because if you don't speak up for your health, things can be missed.Follow-Up Care for Coeliac DiseaseCoeliac Australia provides clear guidelines on what follow-up care should look like for people with coeliac disease. Hey gluten free fam - send me a one-way message! Be sure to include your email so I can reply! A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 138 On today's episode of Gluten Free Thoughts we'll be chatting gluten free maths gluten free fam! Don't worry... I hate maths & I'm not really good at it either so we'll keep it really simple - I promise! We'll only be talking about addition & subtraction in our coeliac & gluten free lives. So much is taken away from us when we're diagnosed with coeliac disease (obviously gluten is taken out of our lives). With gluten taken out we need to replace it with something, much like we do whenever we take something away from our lives - it needs to be replaced by something to fill its place & return our bodies to where they naturally want to exist: in homeostasis. What we'll cover: * My recent experience taking a course of antibiotics & using probiotics * How we can break down complex health conditions into what we can take away from our lives & add back in to help our bodies return to homeostasis  * Reflecting on last week's episode with Sally Marchini  * How having a coeliac disease diagnosis & going gluten free forces us to add in other things to counteract taking gluten out of our lives  * Adding in positive experiences, nutrition & social * What I've added into my life since my coeliac disease diagnosis, going gluten free & becoming a parent * Teaser of next week's episode  Links Join A Gluten Free Podcast Facebook GroupGet in touchYou can find me on Instagram @a.gffamily or send an email to aglutenfreefamily@gmail.com

Hey gluten free fam - send me a one-way message! Be sure to include your email so I can reply! A Gluten Free Podcast Episode 137 WARNING: this episode contains information & in depth discussions around miscarriage & infertility. If you're not comfortable with these topics please skip this episode & return when you are. Amongst the between 200 - 300 symptoms of coeliac disease are unfortunately infertility & miscarriage. Infertility affects about 1 in 6 Australian couples who are trying to fall pregnant & miscarriages occur in at least 15% of confirmed pregnancies but the actual miscarriage rate is likely to be much higher, estimated to be around 1 in 4 pregnancies. Given the physical, mental & emotional trauma of infertility & miscarriage, clearly this is a discussion which needs way more attention. My guest today is well aware of these issues. Being an accredited practising dietitian specialising in female fertility nutrition & personally having been through a diagnosis of diabetes & coeliac disease which complicated her own pregnancy - she's here to help guide women throughout their fertility journey in what can otherwise be an extremely confusing & contradictory area. My guest on today's episode is accredited practising dietitian & founder of Marchini Nutrition, Sally Marchini. We'll talk about Sally's personal coeliac & diabetes journey, the relationship between coeliac disease & fertility issues & how to optimise gluten free nutrition before & during pregnancy. What we'll cover: * Sally's background & work as a dietitian & speciality in gluten free fertility nutrition * Sally's own coeliac disease & diabetes journey * How coeliac disease can affect fertility & pregnancies * Coeliac disease affecting both male & female fertility * Coeliac disease connection to PCOS, Endometriosis, infertility, miscarriage, low iron & nutrient deficiencies  * Specific advice around the gluten free diet & fertility/ pregnancy * Fertility gluten free diet supplementation  * Sally's pregnancy issues when diagnosed with diabetes * Where Sally is focussing her work Links Marchini NutritionFollow Sally on Facebook  & Instagram Thriving Gluten Free Webinar recording Kim Faulkner Hogg Join A Gluten Free Podcast Facebook GroupGet in touchYou can find me on Instagram @a.gffamily or send an email to aglutenfreefamily@gmail.com
