The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds in New Orleans and Chris Fetters and Scott Eklund in Seattle - break down the biggest media day of the run-up to Monday's Sugar Bowl clash between Texas and Washington - Saturday's Media Day at the Caesars Superdome. This is the day where basically no one is off limits for either team, so it's a free-for-all for the media to find players and talk with them. And in the case of Texas, apparently they don't get to talk to any players or coaches until after games are played, so this was an even bigger day for them than it was for the UW media. The Texas Longhorns were first to the Superdome, and Kim caught up with former UW assistants Pete Kwiatkowski and Jeff Choate. Kim has detected an air from the Texas side of things that resembles more than just belonging in this game; they are supposed to be here. But UW? Apparently the Huskies still hold outsider status, but it's an odd juxtaposition because UW has been given loads of credit for what they've done during the 2023 season yet the media as a whole outside the Pacific Northwest aren't believers. They still think the Huskies are bound to slip up, even though they hold a 20-game winning streak - tops in the country. After a quick break to pay some bills, the talk turns to the coaches and players Kim talked to of the Purple and Gold persuasion, starting with JaMarcus Shephard and Scott Huff. Then the guys talked about the players Kim was able to speak with, starting with the Chuck Norris of UW Football, Zach Durfee and then moving onto conversations with Austin Mack, Dylan Morris, Curley Reed, and others. To finish off the podcast, Kim talked about his first impressions of being inside the Caesars Superdome and what the players might be dealing with on Monday in terms of the atmosphere, the lights, and more. And he also dropped an interesting nugget about New Year's Eve and how the Canal Street parade and following French Quarter proceedings could impact one team more than the other. On this week's interview episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown picks the brain of longtime college football authority Bruce Feldman about Texas' hiring of Steve Sarkisian. Feldman, who covers college football for FOX as well as The Athletic, has also written several books, including his most recent - Flip The Script: Lessons learned on the road to a championship with Ed Orgeron. Chip asked Feldman to compare the career arcs of Orgeron and Sarkisian as Sark now takes on the expectations at Texas after failing at USC previously (just as Orgeron had to take on the expectations at LSU after also being let go as an interim coach at USC). Feldman, who is based on the West Coast and is very familiar with Pac-12 football, weighed in on Sarkisian's hiring of Washington's Pete Kwiatkowski as defensive coordinator and Montana State head coach Jeff Choate as co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach. Feldman discusses how he thinks Kwiatkowski's defensive philosophy will fit in the Big 12. Feldman worked with Urban Meyer this past season at FOX and provided insight on what that was like while Texas was courting Meyer. Feldman also rates (on a scale of 1-10) how he thinks Texas did with the hiring of Sarkisian and Sark's staff. B-Mac and Herd discuss yet another new FCS conference -- the ASUN Conference. They also talk about the eight FCS players participating in the Senior Bowl this week, Jeff Choate leaving Montana State, CCSU opting out, and Brian’s upcoming recruiting rankings.
Texas is mining the grad transfer market for an edge rusher - what to make of LSU's Ray Thornton and Notre Dame's Ovie Oghoufo? Then Paul & Kevin dish on how and why Mike Stoops' hire was squashed by Longhorn fan insurrection and discuss the final hire of new LB coach Jeff Choate. How did it really go down? Do Big Money donors really exercise too much power at Texas? Finally, they finish talking a little NFL: Packer coach Matt Lafleur's 4th down decision, the upcoming Super Bowl, and musing on the seeming increase in physical freak "projects" panning out in the league.
