And were Jeff Capel, Jaland Lowe, Ishmael Leggett and the men's basketball team unfairly dropped from the AP top 25 poll this week?
The platinum sombrero has arrived on the gridiron. Pitt finishes the year on a 5-game slid, but we've got optimism (see: cope) that this team did show movement in the right direction this year and you should feel that they will get better moving forward. See you in the bowl. After that, a lot of talk about the OT win in Columbus for Pitt Hoops, and what we think they went well, and where they can improve. Attaboy, Papa Kante. Post-Gazette Pitt insiders Stephen Thompson and Christopher Carter break down the Panthers' 24-19 loss to Virginia on Saturday night from Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh. The guys break down what exactly went wrong for Pitt in dropping its second straight defeat of the season and look at how the Panthers' deteriorating quarterback play has sunk the offense as a whole. On their weekly Pitt football mailbag podcast, Post-Gazette insiders Christopher Carter and Stephen Thompson answer reader questions. Among them: What is Panthers coach Pat Narduzzi's biggest problem following a blowout loss to SMU and with tough games against Clemson, Louisville and Boston College looming? Is it quarterback Eli Holstein's play? Or is it poor tackling and offensive line play? How soon could Holstein be benched in favor of backups including Nate Yarnell? Later, they get into some basketball topics. How deep will coach Jeff Capel's rotation go this season? Will Brandin Cummings prove to be a big-time shot maker like his brother Nelly? And will Pitt have another ACC sixth-man award winner in 2024-25 after Nike Sibande and Ishmael Leggett won the honor the past two years?
You'd best know how to swim. The boys are back to talk about Pitt's huge win over Syracuse in a dominant defensive performance by the linebackers. We're talking poll disrespect, a murky QB situation, and previewing a huge ranked matchup in Dallas against SMU Saturday Night. And a sidebar into Petty Duzz and Indiana football. In his weekly YouTube appearance, Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise joins host Adam Bittner to weigh the potential impact of a Brandon Aiyuk trade with the San Francisco 49ers on the rest of the Steelers' roster. Could GM Omar Khan be forced to choose between Aiyuk and George Pickens as soon as next season for salary cap reasons? What impact could a major deal with Aiyuk mean for the QB situation with Russell Wilson, Justin Fields or someone else? And will there be enough cap space left to get deals done with names like Pat Freiermuth, Najee Harris and/or Cam Heyward? Our duo tackles those questions and more on the Steelers front, then gets into some Pirates, Penguins and Pitt football talk. Is the latest losing skid proof that GM Ben Cherington waited too long to upgrade his offense before the MLB trade deadline? Does this lineup have any serious hope with names like Ke'Bryan Hayes struggling so badly? Can this club afford to move on from Andrew McCutchen in the offseason? What should we make of the delay in a contract extension between the Penguins and Sidney Crosby? And what should we make of the Panthers' QB battle between Nate Yarnell and Eli Holstein?
On their weekly Pitt football mailbag podcast, Post-Gazette insiders Christopher Carter and Stephen Thompson answer reader questions. Among them: Is there a true competition at QB? Or has coach Pat Narduzzi pretty much decided that Nate Yarnell will start over Eli Holstein barring a rash of mistakes by Yarnell? What are the odds of Pitt winning seven games and getting back to a bowl game this season? Will defensive lineman Bam Brima be missed after his recently announced departure? And how will new offensive coordinator Kade Bell use his running backs including Rodey Hammond Jr.?
Pat sees parts of himself in new OC Kade Bell. The Panthers have begun training camp with lots of positional battles, but Nate Yarnell is going in as a starter entering camp.
Hour three with Paul Zeise. It's a huge series for the Pirates hosting Arizona. Kevin thinks Oneil Cruz can learn from Ke'Bryan Hayes' effort and preparation defensively. Cruz has 20 errors so he needs to get better, or they could actually move him to another position. Pat sees parts of himself in new OC Kade Bell. The Panthers have begun training camp with lots of positional battles, but Nate Yarnell is going in as a starter entering camp.
On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey gives his thoughts on Pitt football at the start of their training camp on the South Side. Will new OC Kade Bell's emphasis on speed help the Panthers to a quick bounceback from their 3-9 record a year ago? What's TE Gavin Bartholomew's upside in this system? How much optimism is reasonable for Nate Yarnell and Eli Holstein at QB plus Rodney Hammond Jr. at running back? Are 8 wins possible for coach Pat Narduzzi's team despite key departures via graduation and the transfer portal? Jason tackles those questions and more, then pivots to some Pirates topics. How much can Jake Woodford help this bullpen following his call-up from the minors? What's the link between Paul Skenes and Konnor Griffin, this season's first-round MLB draft pick who signed this week? And what should we take away from the loss to the Houston Astros on Wednesday?
Pitt Athletics' own EJ Borghetti joined the show and recounted Pitt football memories with Paul and Chris. Chris joined to preview the Pitt football season and his outlook for Nate Yarnell this season.
Hour three with Paul Zeise. Who's career would you rather have? Justin Verlander, Clayton Kershaw, or Max Scherzer? Pitt football memories with Paul and Chris. Chris joined to preview the Pitt football season and his outlook for Nate Yarnell this season. He takes care of the ball and should easily be better than last year's defense.
On their weekly Pitt mailbag video, Post-Gazette insiders Christopher Carter and Stephen Thompson answer reader questions. Among them: Where does the Panthers' Nate Yarnell rank among ACC quarterbacks? How does Pitt stack up in the new "College Football 25" video game from EA Sports? And how is former Pitt guard Bub Carrington faring in his first NBA Summer League after being drafted No. 14 overall by the Washington Wizards?

Hour four with Joe Starkey and Paul Zeise. Pat Narduzzi told the ACC Network that Pitt's losses in the transfer portal were not gigantic losses. Jerry thinks that's completely untrue and Narduzzi lost 5 starters. Nate Yarnell is going to be the starter and 'clearly better' right now than all other QBs. Andrew Havranek of WPXI joined the show. Someone on the North Shore before the Kenny Chesney concert tried to kiss Andrew live on the air and the live shot went viral.
We've successfully completed the #NoPodApril Challenge, where we forget to drop an episode for the entire month of April. Hand up, my bad. However, that means there's a lot to talk about. On his First 10 podcast for Monday, April 15, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey reacts to a busy weekend in Pittsburgh sports. Did the Penguins' Saturday night loss to the Boston Bruins prove they are fatally flawed, even if Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Co. find a way to slip into the Stanley Cup playoff field? And should coach Mike Sullivan go with Tristan Jarry or Alex Nedeljkovic in net for Monday's pivotal contest against the Nashville Predators? On the Pirates front, what's the significance of Andrew McCutchen's 300th career home run on Sunday against the Philadelphia Phillies? And could Marco Gonzales' injury mean we'll see Quinn Priester or Paul Skenes in the rotation next? Then Jason closes the episode with thoughts on Pitt's Blue-Gold spring game. How did new OC Kade Bell's offense look in his Acrisure Stadium debut? And how does he feel about coach Pat Narduzzi naming Nate Yarnell the starting QB over Alabama transfer Eli Holstein? Pat Narduzzi says Nate Yarnell is the No. 1 quarterback heading into spring camp. Does that mean the job is settled? Should it be? We're discussing the quarterback situation on today's Morning Pitt.
In their weekly Pitt football mailbag video, Post-Gazette insiders Noah Hiles and Christopher Carter answer reader questions. Among them: How would coach Pat Narduzzi have handled the fourth down decisions that the Lions' Dan Campbell faced in the NFC championship against the 49ers? Is Narduzzi already micromanaging new offensive coordinator Kade Bell by naming Nate Yarnell to be the starting quarterback, despite bringing in Alabama transfer Eli Holstein to compete? Why did Narduzzi say he "couldn't mention" things he learned from his team's 3-9 season? And on the basketball front, when does coach Jeff Capel's team have to show more than "good effort?" And which of Pitt's forward provide the most long-term value to the lineup?
