Welcome back to "Mayoral Mondays!" We're asking all four mayoral candidates why they're the right person to lead Pittsburgh. This week, Host Megan Harris is talking to Thomas West, the only candidate who's a newcomer to politics. West has owned TRIM, a clothing store in Lawrenceville, for 11 years, and he's also worked as a producer for WPXI and WTAE. This episode is the third installment in our "Mayoral Mondays" series. Next week, we'll be talking to the final mayoral candidate, former police officer Tony Moreno. Plus, listen to our previous installments. On March 20, 1973 — Roberto Clemente becomes the first Hispanic American to gain election to the Hall of Fame. The Baseball Writers Association of America announces the results of a special ballot, with Clemente receiving 393 of 424 votes. Clemente died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve. In light of his tragic death, the Hall's Board of Directors waived the five-year waiting period that is normally required before a player is eligible for election. A twelve-time All-Star, Clemente batted .317 and won a dozen Gold Gloves over an 18-year career, and batted .362 in World Series play. Named National League MVP in 1966, he was voted the outstanding player in the 1971 World Series, when the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the heavily-favored Baltimore Orioles in seven games.Roberto Clemente sits down with WPXI [then-WIIC]'s Sam Nover in October 1972, less than 3 months before his untimely passing. This is definitely his final at-length interview, and probably his only surviving extended interview that was captured visually. The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police has made major changes to its operation as it battles staffing shortages - including no longer responding to 'in-progress emergencies' and limiting the number of officers on the night shift. Police Chief Larry Scirotto announced in February that during the earlier morning hours there will be fewer officers on staff and lower priority calls will get sent to a telephone reporting unit rather than a person. The chief said the changes need to be made so his 740 officers can more efficiently serve the community, reported WTAE. According to WPXI, calls for theft, harassment, criminal mischief and burglary alarms will all be handled by the telephone reporting unit. 'When there is an event that is not in-progress, we're going to take an reroute that call to our telephone reporting unit,' said Scirotto. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/darien-dunstan3/message

Hour 4: Could the city of Pittsburgh support an NBA team? WPXI reported that there is a consulting firm being paid 90k to explore the venture. The guys sifted through why that probably isn't feasible even if they would be all for it. Is Pittsburgh big enough to pull it off? The smallest cities to boast the 4 major sports teams still have roughly a million more people than Pittsburgh. Could a G-League team be on the way? The Steelers are the favorites to land Justin Fields. What do we like and dislike about the prospect? Chris said the athleticism is off the chart and scored a 99 at his combine a few years ago. How much would it take to get him? How many teams would be interested in him? Name That Tune.

WPXI-TV sports reporter Jenna Harner comes on The Fan Hotline from Buffalo, NY to report on how much snow is still in the stadium and how the weather is supposed to be for gametime.
The Steelers will be without TJ Watt, but their defense is still formidable even without the franchise pass-rusher.
Over the last couple months, one local name has become synonymous with failure — or at least culpability. The 6-4 Steelers may have a winning record, but few would credit offensive coordinator Matt Canada with their success. What about him inspired thousands of fans to chant “Fire Matt Canada” at both Steelers and Penguins games, or prompt one enterprising Giant Eagle to sell cookie cakes with the same slogan? We're with WPXI's Jenna Harner and The Athletic's Mike DeFabo to talk about how Canada came to Pittsburgh, what went wrong during his tenure, and how long a rabid fan base may have to ride this out. **Editor's Note: Just after publishing, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced Canada had been relieved of his duties. Our guest, Mike DeFabo, will be updating a story here. Want some more Pittsburgh news? Make sure to sign up for our daily morning Hey Pittsburgh newsletter. We're also on Instagram @CityCastPgh! A chilling case unfolded in the heartland of Pennsylvania this week, as a couple, including a corrections officer, was charged with the death of a young boy who was reportedly subjected to horrific abuse. Westmoreland County District Attorney Nicole Ziccarelli made the unsettling announcement on July 28, highlighting the relentless pursuit of justice for the innocent victim. Lauren Maloberti, the boy's adoptive mother, and her husband, Jacob Maloberti, a correctional officer by profession, are now facing a slew of charges that include criminal homicide, first-degree murder, and endangering the welfare of children. Moreover, both of them have been slapped with two counts of aggravated assault of a child and criminal conspiracy, according to official reports. The victim was identified as 5-year-old Landon Maloberti. On January 30, the child was found unconscious at home and promptly rushed to Allegheny Health Network Hempfield. His condition rapidly deteriorated, necessitating a transfer to Children's Hospital for specialized medical treatment. Despite the medical team's best efforts, Landon succumbed to his severe injuries a week later, on February 7. DA Ziccarelli detailed the shocking extent of the abuse Landon suffered during a press conference covered by WTAE-TV. She reported that the child sustained blunt force trauma to his head, neck, torso, and extremities. His body was marred by a cruel tapestry of bruises, some fresh, others in different stages of healing, a silent testament to the sustained and systematic abuse. Even more alarming was the report of "prolonged and intensive medical interventions" preceding his untimely demise. A physician, having reviewed the case, made a grim determination: Landon had been subject to "multiple episodes of physical abuse," further compounded by at least two forms of emotional maltreatment. The inflicted injuries were of such severity that they caused "substantial pain," impairing the child's basic functions, including standing, eating, drinking, and even consciousness. In a devastating verdict, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner classified Landon's death as a homicide. Further investigation led to disturbing revelations about the defendants' behavior after Landon's injuries. A criminal complaint acquired by WPXI-TV revealed that the accused had allegedly waited a full day before seeking medical help for the severely injured boy. The couple appeared relatively unphased by the situation. Lauren Maloberti attempted to explain away Landon's condition to medical staff, claiming he was "wobbly" due to a previous COVID-19 infection. Medical staff at Children's Hospital painted a tragic picture. They disclosed that Landon had suffered three distinct brain bleeds, a critical condition that had effectively "obliterated" his brain. Further inquiries conducted by the police included interviews with the victim's siblings. As per WPXI reports, the children stated that their mother regularly disciplined Landon, who, according to her, was "hard to learn his lesson." She allegedly used an open hand, a wooden spoon, or a spray bottle to administer the physical punishment. Disturbingly, coworkers reported Lauren Maloberti openly expressing her disdain for her adopted son, stating she "hated" him and found him "hard to love." The detectives reportedly examined text exchanges between the accused couple from April 2022 through February 2023. The messages were allegedly filled with overt expressions of disdain for Landon. Further distressing information emerged when Landon's maternal grandmother told police that her daughter had stopped her from seeing the boy because "he was bad." Even during the festive period, the grandmother was not allowed to see her grandson. In a solemn statement, DA Ziccarelli said, "Tragically, Landon suffered abuse and trauma over the span of his short life. We intend to prosecute this case with the dignity and honor Landon deserves." Her sentiments were echoed by Delmont Chief of Police T.J. Klobucar, who admitted that in his 25-year career, he had never faced an incident of this magnitude. This shocking case is a grim reminder of the vital importance of vigilance and reporting suspected child abuse, to protect our society's most vulnerable members. Also, how likely is the US going to be ready for electric trucks by 2045?; I'll tell you about the new type of eco-friendly fuel; we'll discuss new ways to avoid low-clearance accidents; and one source says the worst of this inflation mess is behind us. All that and more news. Plus, we'll hear from a new listener in the feedback segment and I'll introduce you to Cici, who you'll be hearing from in quite a few upcoming episodes.
