The writer Salman Rushdie is still recovering in hospital from a brutal attack at a literary event last Friday. A young man rushed onstage and stabbed Rushdie nearly a dozen times, leaving him with injuries so severe he may lose an eye. While Rushdie himself has never been attacked like this before, this isn't the first attempt on his life. He has been targeted by death threats ever since the Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran issued a fatwa calling for Rushdie's death in 1989. The fatwa was over Rushdie's 1988 novel, The Satanic Verses, parts of which some Muslims consider blasphemous. The uproar over the book led to huge protests in many countries, pushed Rushdie into hiding for nearly a decade, and led to the deaths of several people around the world. In England, where Rushdie was based, many people believe it also transformed U.K. society — particularly relations between British Muslims and non-Muslims. Today, we're looking back at The Satanic Verses affair and its long-term impacts with Mobeen Azhar, a BBC journalist and filmmaker. He's made a documentary about it, The Satanic Verses: 30 Years On, and a podcast, Fatwa. We'll also hear from celebrated British novelist and playwright Hanif Kureishi, who is a longtime friend of Rushdie's.

This week Dr. Jasser looks at the Islamist terror attack and assassination attempt against Salman Rushdie. He will answer questions very few have addressed. What in God's name will it take to get the West unsettled? How this attack in more ways than one demonstrates how miserably the West has let its guard down. Why free speech is central battlefront against political Islam and its global jihad. How do the domestic and global military and theological fronts in the war of ideas against Islamists in Iran all come to head in what happened to Sir Salman Rushdie. Why does France put Britain and the rest of the West to shame in how they have finally confronted Islamism. Zuhdi also looks at CAIR's loss in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in its efforts to muzzle and punish a professor of politics and terrorism at Scottsdale Community College. Why should all anti-jihadist activists be unsettled by the attack and its muted fallout?   Keywords: Salman Rushdie, Iran, Khomeini, Fatwa, Hadi Matar, free speech, terrorism, Islamism, political Islam, Islamists, liberty, CAIR, AIFD, Zuhdi Jasser, terrorism Learn more about your ad choices. Hezbollah sympathizer, Hadi Matar, acting on a 1989 fatwa issued by Ayatollah Khomeini, attempted to murder author Salman Rushdie as he was about to give a lecture in upstate New York. Is this an isolated incident or does it foretell danger for the West?Who is Salman Rushdie? You will hear about his origins, his accolades as an author, and the controversy his book, the Satanic Verses, caused when it was published in 1988. For years, he lived in fear because of the threats on his life. So, what is all the fuss about? Does his book really disrespect the prophet Muhammad? Who is Hadi Matar, 24, and why did he try to murder Rushdie? Was it his radical Islamist beliefs, the reward money from the fatwa, wanting to make his family proud or martyrdom? Though he was born in America, his parents came from a part of Lebanon that was a stronghold of the Iranian-backed terror group Hezbollah. What significance is there in his stabbing Rushdie in the neck? How do we know he's a terrorist and not just some disgruntled reader who didn't like the book? Are fatwas just some quaint religious edict whose time has gone - or is this attempted murder connected to the threats against other significant people in the West - John Bolton, Mike Pompeo, an Iranian dissident in Brooklyn, Donald Trump and even JK Rowling?

Not as flawlessly riffed as the regularly numbered episodes, this "bonus" episode features some random thoughts, and then Dane's candid reflections on the situation surrounding the stabbing of Salman Rushdie, including the fact that he had poked fun at the absurd situation of being the subject of a 'fatwa' as recently as 2017. The ep is not journalistic in the least bit, but covers topics such as free speech and the need for sustained self-security in a perpetually insane world, however unfair that may be to the free speakers. We hope Mr. Rushdie survives and recovers to full health.  Support the show

The stabbing of author Salman Rushdie has again ignited the debate around freedom of speech and religious sensibilities. At this stage it's not known why the 75-year-old was attacked. The broadcaster and journalist Mobeen Azhar, who produced the podcast Fatwa, joins us to talk about the background to the threats made against Salman Rushdie after the publication of his book "The Satanic Verses" in 1988. It is already a whole year since the Taliban took over again in Afghanistan. Thousands of refugees were able to come to the UK - but a year on, up to 10,000 are still living in cramped hotels, while for those left in Afghanistan, life is even more precarious. Marzia Babakarkhail, who was a judge in Kabul, came to the UK in 2008 after the Taliban tried to assassinate her twice. She arrived with no English, but joins us to explain how now she works for the Oldham MP Debbie Abrahams on immigration and asylum seeker cases - and earlier this year ran to be a local councillor. We've talked before about the cost of living crisis, but as prices continue to rise, now religious buildings are also facing huge bills. One Methodist minister tells us that in the last year, his monthly electricity bill has risen from £70 to £1000 a month. New research from the Theos think tank finds many religious organisations are having to make difficult decisions about the services they will still be able to offer. And with many of us overwhelmed by constant stories of environmental or economic crisis, not to mention worries about physical or mental health, the Medicine Festival in Berkshire next weekend sounds like the perfect antidote. Its aim is to envision a more enlightened, peaceful and sustainable world and provides a platform for so called 'indigenous wisdom keepers' to share their teachings, ceremonies and traditional technologies. Presented by Emily Buchanan. Produced by Amanda Hancox and Julia Paul.

It has been 33 years since the fatwa from Iran that meant author, Salman Rushdie, had to go into hiding. In recent years, be began resuming his life but, as we saw in a violent demonstration in New York state yesterday, the threat never went away. Today's Mishal Husain spoke with crossbench peer and close friend of Salman Rushdie, Baroness Frances D'Souza, who led his defence after the Fatwa in 1989, working with the Human Rights group ‘Article 19' at the time. Mishal also spoke with writer and close friend, Lisa Appignanesi, who is the former president of English PEN which supports writers at risk and freedom of expression. While you may think that sounds like an off-brand male enhancement supplement, it's actually a sci-fi film from David Cronenberg. The filmmaker—known for his work defining the body horror genre, like The Fly and Dead Ringers—made waves at the Cannes Film Festival this year with his feature Crimes of the Future. Back in 1999, after interviewing Salman Rushdie for Shift magazine, Cronenberg reportedly came up with the idea of "a Fatwa against a virtual-reality game designer." In eXistenZ, Jennifer Jason Leigh stars as the designer of the titular game, leading a cast that includes Jude Law, Ian Holm, Sarah Polley, Christopher Eccleston, and Willem Dafoe.Note: Enjoy this episode of the podcast as a video at patreon.com/femfreq or on Youtube here: https://youtu.be/FdEWrzNXixITime Stamps:47:11 - What's your Freq Out?Kat on the Netflix series HeartstopperAnita on this Letterboxd review of Top Gun: Maverick - https://twitter.com/ASovietOnion/status/1536375850979012610?s=20&t=8Ly5LJWWGkUbbfNJRnz0SQKristian on the novels Song of Achilles and Circe by Madeline Miller, the book The Whisper on the Night Wind: The True History of a Wilderness Legend by Adam Shoalts, and taking walks in the morningLinks Mentioned:David Cronenberg's 1995 interview with Salman Rushdie for Shift magazine: http://www.intralinea.org/monographs/zanettin/sr/cronemberg.htmCancon: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_contentFind Kristian:https://twitter.com/MrKristianBruunhttps://www.instagram.com/mrkristianbruun/Find Us:Join our PatreonOur WebsiteSubscribe to FFR on Apple PodcastsSubscribe to our Star Trek PodcastTwitterInstagramtwitch.tv/femfreq (every Thursday at 6:30pm PT)
