In this episode Matt hears the testimony of a well-known ex-Muslim from Yemen, called John Ghanim (aka Yemeni John).  John came to faith in Jesus as a refugee in Greece a decade ago, but he had already abandoned Islam years earlier while walking around the Kaaba in Mecca, Islam's holiest place. John is full of infectious joy and he's a passionate evangelist who loves to share the good news of the God who offers us so much more than mere religion. He has lost much. He has regular threats on his life and a Fatwa declared against him for apostasy. U.S. intelligence agencies recently briefed President Trump that Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, may be gay, based on human-source intelligence viewed as credible by spy agencies. The reports indicate that Mojtaba had a long-term relationship with a man close to the family and allegedly made advances toward male caregivers while hospitalized after the airstrike that killed his father. President Trump was stunned by the intelligence and laughed aloud during the briefing, with others in the room also finding it hilarious. The late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was said to have feared his son's suitability to rule the Islamic Republic partly for this reason, according to the same intelligence assessment. This podcast episode brings several eye-opening facts to light about how Gandhi misled the Hindu community into supporting the Pan Islamic Khilafat Movement. It was Gandhi who unilaterally glorified the bigoted Ali Brothers as nationalists and freedom fighters. Few people today know that Mohammad Ali got a Fatwa issued by 500 Ulemas throughout India to rebel against the government. Mohandas Gandhi endorsed this Fatwa from the official platform of the Indian National Congress. In a parallel development, the Khilafat Committee in Malegaon, Maharashtra, began making violent speeches, which eventually led to unprovoked violence committed by Muslims in the town. For three days in April 1921, the Muslim community set Malegaon on fire leading to a mini pogrom of Hindus, temple destruction, vandalism and large scale looting. This is a horrific chapter of recent history that has been largely untold. Thirty-four years ago, the Ayatollah Khomeini, the Supreme Leader of Iran, issued a fatwa calling for the assassination of the novelist Salman Rushdie, whose book “The Satanic Verses” Khomeini declared blasphemous. It caused a worldwide uproar. Rushdie lived in hiding in London for a decade before moving to New York, where he began to let his guard down. “I had come to feel that it was a very long time ago and, and that the world moves on,” he tells David Remnick. “That's what I had agreed with myself was the case. And then it wasn't.” In August of last year, a man named Hadi Matar attacked Rushdie onstage before a public event, stabbing him about a dozen times. Rushdie barely survived. Now, in his first interview since the assassination attempt, Rushdie discusses the long shadow of the fatwa; his recovery from extensive injuries; and his writing. It was “just a piece of fortune, given what happened,” that Rushdie had finished work on a new novel, “Victory City,” weeks before the attack.
