In this Pride Month episode, Navy veteran and author Karen Solt joins co-host V.V. Ganeshananthan and guest co-host Matt Gallagher to talk about her experience of being gay while serving in the military. Solt, who retired as a senior chief petty officer in 2006 and served both before and during “Don't Ask, Don't Tell,” talks about the Clinton-era policy that prohibited the harassment of gay service members while requiring that they stay closeted. Solt explains the impossible position gay military members were in before and during DADT, as they faced questioning from investigators, the threat of losing their jobs if found out, and being separated from their partners rather than being moved together as their straight counterparts often were. Solt reads from her book, Hiding for My Life: Being Gay in the Navy. Would you believe that the news of an American soccer team being almost killed by the opposing players and fans and then again playing just two days later in the same stadium WASN'T what everyone was talking about? Instead of reporting about the melee, ALL the major networks were coving a HUGE announcement. Find out what it was on THIS episode of TOP FOLD.Top Fold is dedicated to, "All the news that would have been". What does that mean? That means that on 9/11, or when the Hindenburg exploded, or Elvis Presley died, headlines were replaced and stories fell below the fold. What event happened that was huge but wasn't talked about because something else monumental took the headlines? The -name of the podcast comes from a combination of "TOP Story" and "Above the FOLD"-TOP FOLD.Original music by David "Beezer" Wagler.Sources for Season 4 Ep 3Game Ended by Fight, New York Times April 22, 1985, Section C, Page 6 Multiple texts and phone discussions with Brenthley Yiraiyah Babb (Jan-Apr., 2023)Multiple texts and phone discussions with L. How can Paul claim to “boast in the cross”? How can Christians sing “in the cross, in the cross, be my glory ever?” To have the power over death and allow yourself to die is anything but glorious; its an act of insanity to himself and treachery to his followers (who left everything to join him in this crusade). He must be mad, or delusional…or he must know something we don't know. It's for the same reason Londoners take pride in the fire of London. How can I glory in the cross? Because his cruel death is my glorious salvation, allowing everything that is decaying in me to die, so that I might—with transformed vision and a transformed life—begin to truly live. The sermon today is titled "Why Christianity Has A Cross." It is the first installment in our "Matters of First Importance" Series, and also serves as a "Part 2" to The God Who Is Self Sacrificing (Season 2, Episode 23). Scripture reading is from 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. Originally preached at the West Side Church of Christ (Searcy, AR) on October 9, 2022. All lessons fit under one of 5 broad categories: Begin, Discover, Grow, Learn, and Serve. This sermon is filed under Learn: Christian Doctrine.Click here if you would like to watch the sermon or read a transcript.Footnotes (Sources and References Used In Today's Podcast):Fleming Rutledge, The Crucifixion."Dream of the Rood." In 2011, Teen Vogue drew attention to harmful consequences of insensitively chosen fancy dress costumes that reduce beliefs, cultures and people to garish stereotypes. In previous episodes of Dress: Fancy, Lucy and Ben have considered the painful consequences of badly informed costume choices and in this episode they continue this dialogue, reflecting in far more depth on the widening debates about cultural appropriation and dressing up. Today we are discussing the head of the EPA, Scott Pruitt. His tenure has been controversial. He has been in the news for potential ethics violations regarding airline fares. There have been odd details about personal security and a lack of transparency. Environmentalists have voiced concerns about policy process and changes that have occurred under his orders. Pruitt is, by all accounts, deeply religious and in this episode we'll try to connect the dots between his faith and environmental policy. Assistant Professor at AGH University of Science and Technology, Krakow Poland Interview starts at 20:15 and ends at 43:40 On the Kindle Oasis: "I remember the first eBook readers that were available in Poland cost about that much as well, seven to eight years ago. It's quite a steep price, and I've read comments on Polish web sites that indeed it's very expensive. I also think that it's something that you first need to probably experience when you've had it in your hands, and I think that's when you can really say if it's worth the price."
