"I remember saying to you, do people actually go to work like this? Do they just carry on with normal life? Surely you take two days off and just lie in bed. I just couldn't comprehend that this was normal, and that women are expected to just live like this." This week, Dr. Louise Newson is joined by her daughter, Sophie Anderson, a student at King's College London, for an honest and insightful conversation about contraception, hormones, and the significant gaps in sex education. Sophie shares both her own experiences and those of her peers, highlighting how many young women use birth control not just to prevent pregnancy but also to manage symptoms of PMS, heavy periods, and acne. Dr Newson discusses the lack of education around the differences between natural and synthetic hormones, explaining how this knowledge gap leaves many young people feeling frustrated and unsupported. Together, they examine how PMS is so widely normalised that many young women come to expect low moods, fatigue, and pain as simply part of life. This candid mother-daughter conversation calls for a more personalised and informed approach to hormonal health. If sex education only teaches how to avoid pregnancy but fails to explain how hormones actually work, are we truly preparing young people to make informed choices? Transdermal estrogen in the form of a patch, gel, or cream is often the preferred delivery method for menopausal hormone therapy. Unlike oral estrogen, in addition to other advantages, transdermal estrogen does not increase the risk of blood clots. But a new study, published in the journal Menopause, indicates that your transdermal estrogen… may not be doing what you think it's doing. Today, I am speaking with one of the authors of that study, Dr. Louise Newson. Following the election of President Donald Trump in November, California Gov. Gavin Newson, a Democrat, convened a special session of the state legislatures to “Trump-proof” California. At the top of the agenda is Newson's effort to prevent a Trump administration from deporting illegal aliens living in the state. “This is going against the rule of law and against the will of the American people” who elected Trump, Allison Huynh said of Newson's efforts. Democrats in California have “romanticized” sanctuary cities and even crime, according to Huynh, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur and former Democrat. “We're just opening the gate and allowing all these illegal immigrants to come in, a lot of criminals, drug dealers, and it's all funded by George Soros and the cartels,” she said. A narrative has been perpetuated in California that justifies crime in the name of being kind to the poor, according to Huynh, but the reality is that “were basically frogs being boiled alive.” Huynh grew up in a Marxist Communist country until the age of seven when her family left Vietnam and moved to America, and says she is watching as her state embraces “full blown socialism.” Huynh joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to explain how Newson's actions are moving her state towards socialism, and if there is any hope left for California. This episode was...unplanned. :-) A couple of months ago I interviewed Dr. Louise Newson on the topic of menopause. Dr. Newson is a medical doctor and focused very heavily on Hormone Replacement Therapy as a treatment that everyone who menstruates should at least consider, and I knew I wanted to do an episode with someone who doesn't hold that belief as well. I found Alexandra Pope and Sjanie Hugo Wurlitzer of The Red School, and really appreciated their book Wise Power. As I usually do before recording an interview I read their other co-authored book Wild Power, and I realized there was a 'missing' episode on the topic of Menstrual Cycle Awareness. We can't really talk about being aware of the changes that are happening to our bodies during menopause if we don't know what has happened to our bodies throughout our menstruating years. When I read Wild Power I felt a deep sense of sadness that I was just discovering this now, as my own years of menstruation wind down - but also a deep sense of hope that I can help Carys develop a much closer relationship with her own body than I had with mine. We'll answer questions like: What phases does my body go through each month? How can I start becoming more aware of these phases through Menstrual Cycle Awareness? How can I align my activities with my energy levels, creativity, and arousal - even in the real world, which wants me to go-go-go all the time? How is my inner critic aligned with my cycle, and how can I use its knowledge to help me? How can I navigate Menstrual Cycle Awareness if I've had a difficult relationship with my periods and with fertility? I'd encourage you to listen to this episode if: You menstruate and want to better understand how menstruation affects your life You're raising a child who will menstruate and want to prepare them to feel 'at home' in their bodies You love someone who menstruates and want to be better attuned to them You're raising a child who will never menstruate, but you want them to appreciate menstruation and know how to effectively support people who menstruate. In other words, everyone will get something out of this episode! ...

How do I know if I'm perimenopausal?A few months ago a member in the Parenting Membership shared a whole bunch of symptoms she'd had, from fatigue to rage to dry eyes. She'd been on a four year journey to figure out what was going on before finding out that she was in perimenopause, and wanted to save other members from the same experience she'd had. That sparked a huge discussion in the community, with other members wondering whether the symptoms they were experiencing were also related to menopause - and whether this was going to be yet another thing they were going to have to educate their doctors about to get appropriate treatment. In this episode we answer questions about: What roles do hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone play in our bodies? What is menopause, and what is perimenopause? What are some of the most common symptoms of perimenopause? (Hint - it isn't hot flashes) What are the benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy, and who should consider it? Is HRT dangerous? What impacts does culture have on the experience of menopause? In our next episode on this topic we'll look at a non-medical, holistic approach to menopause.

My guest this week is author Rasheed Newson, a TV writer who got his start on the show Lie to Me and has gone on to write for The 100, Narcos, Bel Air, and more. Last year his debut novel, My Government Means to Kill Me, made a big splash — it's the story of a young gay black man who moves to New York during the HIV epidemic. And although Rasheed didn't experience that world first-hand, he discovered during his writing process that in a strange way, he'd been preparing himself to tell that story for years without ever realizing it.We'll have that conversation in a minute. First, a reminder if that if you like The Sewers of Paris, you'll probably also enjoy my new podcast about the 90s TV series My So-Called Life. This week's episode features the delightful Anthony Oliveira, who appeared on The Sewers of Paris just a few weeks ago. We talked all about My So-Called Life episode 3, in which we learn a lot more about the gay teen named Rickie — and we also talked about Anthony's own experience as a semi-closeted teen in Catholic school, and how his secret boyfriend wasn't quite as secret as he thought. The podcast is called Matt's So-Cast Pod, and it's available now wherever you listen to podcasts. And you may also like my YouTube videos for a queer look at movie and television history, my weekly livestreams on Twitch, my book Hi Honey, I'm Homo!, and my email newsletter.
