What's that one R&B song that can transport you through time and take you back to a key moment or phase of your life? Amazing how music can have that impact. Join me, your host Tiffany Cross, for a nostalgic journey through the rhythms and grooves of R&B music and its enduring impact on our lives. As we reminisce about the classics that shaped our personal narratives, we contrast the generations to the backdrop of soulful tunes from the icon Stevie Wonder to the groundbreaking anthems of Destiny's Child to present day artists like H.E.R. Listen in as I share my intimate stories of growing up with these melodies, reflecting on how the different eras' music has accompanied me through life's milestones. Journey with us as we discuss the twists and turns of the music industry's evolution, from the inspiration of neo-soul to the enigma of streaming revenues. Our conversation will bring to light the tough choices artists face between signing with record labels or staying independent, navigating venues and award shows, and the precarious trappings of celebrity life. Special guests, Brownstone lead singer Nicci Gilbert-Daniels and up and coming singer SiMaya, join us to share their experiences and insights. They give us an honest and intimate behind-the-scenes look at the music industry's dynamics and how we, as listeners, can support the genuine artists who still craft music with soul and substance. Did you know there's a list of dangerous people to work with that's circulating among some artists in the industry? We discuss as it's not all harmonies and high notes. Tune in as we delve into the darker chords that resonate within the industry addressing serious issues like predatory behavior examining the recent convictions and accusations that have rocked the music world. With personal anecdotes and reflections, we explore how an enabling culture has allowed such behavior to persist and the steps we're taking to change the narrative for future generations. So whether you're a die-hard R&B fan or simply interested in the interplay of music and society, this episode is a heartfelt symphony of dialogue that's not to be missed. On this episode, Amber and Erika are joined by platinum-selling R&B diva Nicci Gilbert of the iconic trio Brownstone. Nicci is a singer, songwriter, and film and stage producer who created the stage play “Soul Kittens Cabaret” in 2003. Nicci subsequently filed suit against the Starz network and others alleging that the hit show “P-Valley” uses the same plot line and wrongly infringes upon copyrighted elements of Soul Kittens Cabaret. Through her own experience, Nicci explains what intellectual property is and how difficult it can be for Black creatives in particular to protect their work. She candidly discusses the entertainment industry normalizing the theft of intellectual property through bad contracts, promises of exposure, and enforcing the notion that it's part of “paying one's dues” on the road to success. Nicci uses her and other Black artist's experiences to explain what's at stake when creatives lose ownership of their work. But most importantly, we learn what's being done to close the gap. Brown and Gilbert have a new member, Arin Jackson, who they say reminds them a great deal of Maxwell, not only in terms as her talent but also her mannerisms and personality. Jackson, for her part, said she's thrilled to be a part of Brownstone. “I get a rare opportunity you don't get in this industry to learn from the living legend Nicci Gilbert, and on the other side of me I have what I consider the most talented woman in the world, Teisha Lott Brown,” Jackson said. “And I get to bring my talent and my showmanship to this group to blend and to keep Brownstone's legacy alive.” The trio are dedicated to putting out stellar R&B. Brown pointed out how popular '90s groups continue to resonate with audiences through “old skool” tours that are making the rounds. Gilbert said that's one of the reasons you see their contemporaries, like SWV and Xscape, also making new music. “We've come to a place where things are so hard that people are looking to lean on really talented people and great songs and great music, because I think it speaks a universal language,” she said. Jones made history being nominated for a Grammy. In 2019 Brownstone took the stage by storm and had the honor of performing at The Essence Festival's 25th Anniversary which also marked Brownstone's 25th Anniversary and that same year they also performed on BET's Her LIVE Project. Since getting back on stage June 2019 and getting back to what they love and continuing the legacy started for Brownstone by Michael Jackson signing them and giving Brownstone the platform to gift the world with their talent; Don't miss this Brownstone Experience coming to a stage near you!
