This week we look at the life and career of the late great Dick Emery (1915-1983), as Tyler and Chris Diamond talk to his son Nick. Dick worked with the Goons both collectively and individually: appearing in a number of Goon Shows, as a substitute for Secombe in The Case of the Mukkinese Battlehorn and briefly in the Sellers film The Wrong Arm of the Law, as well as working extensively with Michael Bentine on television. Nick talks warmly and openly about his father's career and personal life in a conversation which covers a lot of ground - from Dick's early life and wartime escapades to later fame as one of the biggest stars on British television. Topics include: Holidaying with the Milligans... Dick's relationship with Tony Hancock... the many marriages... working with Peter Cook and an intriguing 'Derek and Dick' tape.... the film Ooh You Are Awful... the origins of Lampwick... Dick's striking parallels with Peter Sellers... going AWOL during WWII... Ralph Reader's Gang Show... 'worrying Pat Coombs'... The Dick Emery Show and how he was ill-served by some of the later material... Clarence and portrayals of homosexuality in the seventies... It's A Square World... working with Wonder Woman... his appearance in the film Yellow Submarine... 'The Man Who Fixed Churchill's Son's Boiler'... the 1973 Royal Variety Show... Eric Morecambe, Clive Dunn, Harry Enfield and much much more!

14 Iced Bears special with Robert Sekula in conversation with David Eastaugh 14 Iced Bears were a British indie pop band associated with the C86 music scene. Formed in Brighton in 1985, by Robert Sekula and Nick Emery the band featured a shifting line-up of musicians across their seven-year existence, centred on songwriter and vocalist Rob Sekula and guitarist/songwriter Kevin Canham. Their jangly indie pop was characterised by a fuzzy protopunk-influenced guitar sound, and saw them receive modest critical acclaim in Britain's music press as well as prompting disc jockey John Peel to recruit them to record a couple of sessions for his programme on BBC radio. The group released a handful of singles, including "Come Get Me" on the influential Sarah label, and two full-length albums: the eponymous 14 Iced Bears(1988), and Wonder (1991).

This week Omar is joined by Campaign's deputy news editor Simon Gwynn to discuss the biggest headlines of the last fortnight. Nick Emery's departure from Mindshare after a prank gone wrong has surprised the advertising industry. Omar and Simon discuss trust and etiquette on video calls, the standards CEOs must hold themselves to, as well as other high-profile examples. Nike has also pushed Americans to "change the world" in election voting push, and in the UK brands have been getting involved with footballer Marcus Rashford's campaign to extend free school meals to the school holidays. Is this now the norm for brands, or just a passing phase? Omar is then joined by Facebook's EMEA vice-president Nicola Mendelsohn in a wide-ranging interview that covers her diagnosis with a rare form of cancer, Facebook's release of the book Building Brilliant Brands, the recent brand boycott over Black Lives Matter, its EMEA client council, and what the social media giant was due to announce at its IAB upfront. Normally, we’d have something here about how Gonzaga put to lowly WCC foes to bed, and try to make it somewhat cute and/or funny. But this time, we have a sincere message: congrats to new Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Edgar Martinez. It only took 10 years (about nine too long if you ask us), but the baseball writers finally got things right. Which has nothing to do with Free Ira Brown, but seemed worth mentioning nonetheless. But fear not, dear FIBber, the pod is back with its usual shenanigans. And in our latest episode, our heroes review the wins over Loyola Marymount in LA and over the Pilots our home-away-from-home, Portland. Those stories, plus we dip our toes into the Triple Tower lineup, have a moment with Heister, wonder if it’s time to start worry about Zach’s shooting and curse BYU’s women. We also take the time to protect ourselves from the flailing hands of Nick Emery, the middle-aged hands of TJ Haws and the hulking hands of Yoeli Childs in our BYU preview. We also play Santa Clara this week, but they’re terrible so…bleh. And finally, it’s the return of an old friend as we fish around for a very positive cinematic Top 3. All this and more on this week’s episode of Free Ira Brown, THE Gonzaga Hoops Podcast. Do join in the positivity, won’t you?
