Today's Practical Horseman Podcast, sponsored by Sentinel Horse Feed, is with Tamie Smith. The five-star eventer always has a lot on her plate, but her current sights are set on the 2025 Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event in Lexington, Kentucky, that kicks off later this month on April 24. This year, Tamie will be competing in the CCI4* competition aboard 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood Kynan, following their stellar performance at the Galway Downs International Horse Trials at the end of March. We last talked to Tamie at the Maryland Five Star this past October after she'd announced that she would be retiring her longtime eventing partner, 19-year-old German Sport Horse gelding Mai Baum, from five-star competition.Tamie and Mai Baum, or Lexus as he's known around the barn, first partnered in 2015 and were members of the U.S. Eventing Team that won gold at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. During their CCI5*-L debut at the Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event in 2021, the pair had a top-10 finish and were named as the reserve for the U.S. Eventing Team for the Tokyo Olympics later that year.In 2023, Tamie and Mai Baum went on to a historic win in the Kentucky Three-Day five star competition as the first U.S. combination to win in 15 years and the first woman since 2011. When Tamie isn't competing, you can find her running her training and sale horse program, Next Level Eventing, with her daughter and pro rider, Kaylawna. In today's podcast, we talked to Tamie about her long and storied career with Mai Baum, how she decided it was time for him to step down from five-star competition and what the sassy gelding is up to these days. She also tells us about her current string of horses, including her Kentucky mount this year Kynan, her overall training philosophy and balancing motherhood (and grandmother-hood) with her eventing career. And after breaking gender barriers in the sport, Tamie also talks about the strides she's seen women make in eventing as well as the challenges women still face.

In this episode of "Lead-HER-ship with Tamie Wilson", Tamie interviews Maggie Scotece, the Interim Executive Director of the Abortion Fund of Ohio. Tamie and her guest delved into the heart of the fight for reproductive rights in Ohio, and we are excited to share some key takeaways with you.The Battle for Issue One: We discussed the campaign for Issue One, a constitutional amendment aimed at protecting reproductive decision-making in Ohio. The journey has been challenging, but the importance of keeping these decisions in the hands of individuals, not politicians, fuels our fight.Busting Myths and Misinformation: We tackled the misinformation surrounding Issue One, including false narratives about its impact on trans and sex changes. It's crucial to understand that this amendment doesn't change consent laws or allow unrestricted abortion, but includes a fetal viability limit. The Role of the Abortion Fund of Ohio: Maggie shed light on the invaluable work of the Abortion Fund of Ohio. They provide financial assistance, support, and education to individuals seeking abortions, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for their clients. The Waiting Period and Financial Burden: We discussed the 24-hour waiting period in Ohio post-counseling before proceeding with an abortion. Often, this period extends due to factors like doctor availability, adding to the financial burden of the procedure.Debunking Abortion Myths: We addressed common myths, like the misconception that abortion prevents future pregnancies. We emphasized the importance of ongoing birth control counseling post-abortion and the need to debunk disinformation surrounding it.The Power of Personal Stories: Maggie highlighted the importance of sharing personal stories to humanize the issue of abortion. She also discussed the potential consequences of overturning the constitutional amendment and the rising criminalization of miscarriages.I hope these insights spark your curiosity and encourage you to listen to our full conversation. Together, we can challenge the stigma, misinformation, and restrictive laws surrounding reproductive healthcare. Remember, your voice matters, and every vote counts in the fight for reproductive rights in Ohio.Stay tuned for more enlightening discussions! This week I catch up with Tamie and Carla. Tamie is continuing her program to count macros including calories, protein, fibre, carbs and fat. The balance is proving to be a challenge, but one that she's happing to talk about. Carla is struggling with illness of family members. She talks about how intermittent fasting has been helpful, but sometimes is not enough to nourish her. She also highlights struggles with the gluten free diet when all your time and energy is taken up with caring for others.
