Welcome back to the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast.Today's show dives into the collision of culture, sports, and finance. We talk with Chase Griffin, a student-athlete and QB at UCLA, who has become a pioneer in the college athletics Name Image Likeness (NIL) movement and is the 2x winner of the NIL Male Athlete of the Year awards from the NIL Summit and Opendorse.Chase has excelled on and off the field, so he's no stranger to success. In high school, he was the Texas Gatorade Player of the Year, and he turned down Ivy League offers to commit to UCLA. At UCLA, he's played behind NFL draft pick Dorian Thompson-Robinson and put up strong performances on the field. Off the field, he's been a leader in the NIL movement and an exemplary scholar-athlete, to the point where his coach at UCLA, Chip Kelly, has said, “if you could buy stock in a human, buy stock in Chase Griffin.”Chase has deftly navigated the rapidly changing landscape of the NIL to secure over 30 NIL brand deals and launched the community / charity giving platform #NILforGood. He recently joined Range Media Partners as Athlete/Creator in Residence and contributes to Range business operations across Sports, NIL, Film, TV, Music, and Social Impact.Chase and I had a fascinating discussion about how the NIL could change college sports as we know it and how it will coincide with more investment into college athletics. At a time when private equity firms are investing into companies that are part of the developing NIL ecosystem and possibly even investing into collegiate athletics conferences, Chase shares his views on the impact that the NIL and financialization of sports has on athletes, colleges, pro sports, and broader student bodies.Congrats on all the accomplishments in your young career thus far, Chase. Thanks for coming on the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast to share your experiences and wisdom on the NIL.

In early June 2023, the second annual NIL Summit was held at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia. Over 500 athletes traveled to Georgia to talk about NIL and grow their understanding of how to maximize their opportunities. The amount of attention and interest in what college athletes might be able to earn via this marketplace is still being established. One thing is for certain, though... the sky appears to be the limit. My guest is Jason Belzer, the co-founder and CEO of Student-Athlete NIL (SANIL). It is the agency of record that specializes in assisting brands, universitiesand student-athletes navigate the new era of name, image and likeness. Belzer's company manages 30+ NIL collectives at universities acrossthe country, including: Roll The Quad (Wake Forest). The Tech Way (Georgia Tech), Knights Of The Raritan (Rutgers) and Crimson & Cream (Oklahoma) (recently recognized by Sports Business Journal as a Power Player in the NIL space). Welcome to THE Sports Law Podcast! We keep you informed on everything at the intersection of sports and the law. The world of Name, Image, and Likeness keeps moving forward as Mike (@Mike_sonof_Law) and Holly (@ProsecutieRests) break down the latest updates in NIL and even student-athletes becoming employees. California has proposed a revenue sharing bill, which passed in the Assembly. (3:05) CA is proposing a bill that would create a revenue sharing system for all student athletes. Student athletes can make up to $25,000 per year, and potentially more so long as they complete their undergraduate degree. The bill would not classify student athletes as employees but would give them access to certain benefits like healthcare. Another way that the NCAA model is changing in favor of student athletes. NIL Collectives are speaking in front of Congress 6/6 and 6/7 to lobby for a federal bill. (13:21) We have discussed many times how the proposed federal NIL bills are NCAA favored. Collectives associated with power 5 schools are taking a stand to lobby for federal legislature in favor of student athletes. The second annual NIL Summit occurred last weekend in Atlanta and Holly was there in-person. (16:30) Holly discusses the speakers, student athletes, brands, and sessions that occurred at the summit. The program remains dedicated to fostering the growth and education of student athletes and brands within the NIL space. The NCAA and conferences have been reviewing their rules regarding national letter of intent day and Individuals Associated With Prospective student athletes ("IAWP"). (24:00) Football programs have complained that the December NIL signing day interferes with bowl game preparations and are looking to moving it earlier in the year. Some argue that moving it to early would impact high school athletes' senior year of competition. IAWP is a rule that was implemented to prevent schools from hiring an individual and using that individual as an inducement to get a prospective student athlete to attend that school. Coaches are now calling for IAWP to be rescinded because NIL is the true inducement now. BYU football has some confusion with their NIL sponsor Built Protein Bars. (30:00) Built Bars area Utah based brand which made a deal with BYU football to pay walk-ons tuition and NIL money to the team, totaling around $1.25 million. Players started expressing frustration that Built wasn't holding up their end of the deal by failing to pay 15% royalties on the BYU specific "CougarTail" bars. However, it was apparent that the 15% would go to the head coach for program development. Built ended up paying each athlete $600 in lieu of this misunderstanding. Built CEO stated he was upset at how the whole situation went down and that they have 100% paid their end of the deal. *** Have a topic you want to write about? Andrew Vaughn had four hits and Luis Robert drove in a pair of runs for the White Sox. Padres 12, Cubs 5 – Voit homers, drives in 5 as Padres rally past Cubs 12-5 Luke Voit hit a two-run homer and a three-run double as the San Diego Padres rallied from a five-run deficit to hand the Chicago Cubs their eighth straight loss, 12-5. The Padres trailed 5-0 when Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks was pulled after allowing a double to Jake Cronenworth to start the sixth inning. Voit homered off reliever Chris Martin to spark a four-run sixth, and his double off Mychal Givens gave the Padres the lead for good at 7-5 and highlighted a six-run seventh. The Padres have won six of eight. Willson Contreras homered twice, drove in three runs and scored three times on a 3-for-4 night for the Cubs. Today Chicago White Sox (Velasquez 2-3) at Detroit (Faedo 1-2), 1:10 p.m. WSJM/WCSY 12:50 San Diego (Weathers 0-0) at Chicago Cubs (Kilian 0-0), 8:05 p.m. NHL – National Hockey League – 2022 Stanley Cup Finals Tonight Tampa Bay Lightning at Colorado Avalanche, 8:00 p.m. (Game 1) NHL – Stanley Cup Final pits Lightning vs. high-scoring Avalanche The Stanley Cup Final is a showdown between the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning and the high-scoring Colorado Avalanche. Colorado is averaging a playoff high 4.61 goals a game. Tampa Bay’s 2.41 goals against is the lowest of any team that made it past the first round. The Lightning know from prior postseason runs how to adjust their style of play for their opponent. This series is another test of containing a team that can fly up and down the ice and fill the net. NHL – Signs Point to Lightning star returning for Cup Final Game 1 Indications are Brayden Point will return for the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final at the Colorado Avalanche. Point has missed the past month after injuring his right leg in Game 7 of the first round against Toronto. Coach Jon Cooper says things are trending toward Point playing in this series opener. Point took part in the Lightning’s final full team practice before Game 1 skating like he was never injured. He was Tampa Bay’s leading goal-scorer in each of the past two Cup runs. NHL – Knights hire Cassidy Bruce Cassidy has been hired to coach the Vegas Golden Knights a week after being fired by the Boston Bruins. Cassidy becomes the Golden Knights’ third coach. He replaces Peter DeBoer, who was fired after Vegas missed the playoffs for the first time in its five-year history. Cassidy had a 245-108-46 record and led the Bruins for the playoffs for six straight seasons. He was fired on June 6, a month after the Bruins lost a seven-game first-round series to Carolina. Golf – McIlroy questions competitive desire of players in LIV Golf Rory McIlroy says he was wrong about his prediction in February that the Saudi-backed rival golf league was “dead in the water.” He says that’s because he took at face value players like Dustin Johnson who said they were staying on the PGA Tour. McIlroy also described the LIV Golf league as a “pre-Champions Tour” circuit because of the ages of those interested. He says their best days are probably behind them. But he remains curious why younger players like Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed would go over. McIlroy says speaking for himself, at 33 he feels his best days are ahead. NBA – National Basketball Association – 2022 NBA Finals Thursday Golden State Warriors at Boston Celtics, 9:00 p.m. (GSW Leads 3-2) WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Phoenix Mercury at Indiana Fever, 7:00 p.m. WNBA – WNBA star Griner’s Russia detention extended for third time U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner will remain in Russian custody through at least July 2 after her detention was extended for a third time, Russian state-run media has reported. The report gave no timeline for Griner’s trial, but cited a top Russian diplomat as saying that she will not be considered for detainee swaps until her case has been investigated. The 31-year-old WNBA center was arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling after Russian airport authorities claimed in February to have found cannabis products in her luggage. Her supporters have expressed concern that Moscow will use her as a bargaining chip amid tensions over its war in Ukraine. NCAA – No angst about college athletes cashing in at 1st NIL summit Hundreds of college athletes from schools all over the country are in Atlanta this week. They are attending the inaugural NIL Summit. They are learning from companies about how to build their brands. The summit is the first since the NCAA cleared the way for college athletes to earn endorsement money last July. The NCAA was not at the summit and neither were athletic directors from the nation’s biggest schools. NCAAFB – NCAA athletes still excel in classroom despite pandemic NCAA athletes saw their overall four-year Academic Progress Rate increase to 984, a one-point jump from the most recent data publicly released in May 2020. College sports’ largest governing body opted not to release last year’s numbers because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Men’s basketball finished at 968, up two points from 2020, while baseball, football and women’s basketball all remained even with their 2020 averages at 977, 964 and 983. NCAAWBKB – UConn self-reported 15 minor NCAA violations in 2021 UConn’s athletic department self-reported 15 minor NCAA violations in 2021, including a women’s basketball player accepting cash $40 from fans. The violations were first reported Tuesday by Hearst Connecticut Media, which obtained details of them through a Freedom of Information Act request. They included four violations by the women’s basketball program, three by the football program, and one each in men’s soccer, baseball, softball, field hockey and women’s tennis. The athletic training department and the compliance department also were cited. All 15 violations were considered to be Level III “breach of conduct” violations by the university, the least serious category of NCAA violation. Tennis – Wimbledon – Serena Williams gets wild-card entry for Wimbledon singles Serena Williams is going to play at Wimbledon this year. The All England Club has announced that Williams was awarded a wild-card entry for singles. Williams has not competed anywhere since getting injured during the first set of her first-round match at the All England Club a year ago. And her name did not appear on the women’s singles entry list released by the grass-court Grand Slam tournament earlier this month. But Williams was among six women given a spot in the singles draw via wild cards. The grass-court Grand Slam tournament begins June 27. Williams has won seven of her 23 major championships there. Tennis – US Open – US Open lets Russian tennis players in after Wimbledon ban The U.S. Open will allow tennis players from Russia and Belarus to compete this year despite the ongoing war in Ukraine. That war prompted Wimbledon to ban those athletes. U.S. Tennis Association CEO and Executive Director Lew Sherr tells The Associated Press that the USTA Board decided to let Russians and Belarusians enter the tournament because of “concern about holding the individual athletes accountable for the actions and decisions of their governments.” Sherr said athletes from Russia and Belarus will play at Flushing Meadows under a neutral flag. The U.S. Open starts on Aug. 29. NFL – Detroit Lions sign Devin Funchess to add depth at tight end The Detroit Lions are giving Devin Funchess a chance to make a comeback in the NFL. Detroit signed him as a tight end on Tuesday to add depth to a position group led by T.J. Hockenson. Funchess has not played in the league since 2019. Carolina drafted him out of Michigan in the second round of the 2015 draft and he had 21 touchdown receptions over four seasons with the Panthers. NFL – Bears’ progress at minicamp comes without DE Robert Quinn Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields and wide receiver Darnell Mooney continued building a passing connection as the team’s mandatory minicamp opened Tuesday, but the defense is trying to get by without no-show pass rusher Robert Quinn. Although coach Matt Eberflus had expressed the belief Quinn would attend the workouts, he was absent after also missing all of the Bears’ offseason voluntary work. Quinn is under contract through 2024. NFL – Deshaun Watson again denies sexual misconduct claims Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson says he’s determined to keep fighting to clear his name and insists he never committed sexual misconduct. He stood by previous comments proclaiming his innocence. Watson is facing civil lawsuits from 24 massage therapists in Texas accusing him of sexual assault and harassment. But Watson says he never assaulted, harassed or disrespected anyone. Watson was speaking publicly for the first time since March 25, a week after the Browns signed him to a fully guaranteed $230 million contract despite his complex legal situation. Since then, his legal entanglements have grown with two more women filing lawsuits. NFL – New Charger Mack making progress during busy offseason It has been a busy offseason for Khalil Mack since being traded from the Chicago Bears to the Los Angeles Chargers. In addition to becoming familiar with new teammates and getting up to speed on a new defense, the outside linebacker has been rehabbing from last year’s foot surgery. Considering everything that has gone on the past three months, Mack seems pleased with his progress. Mack has spent most of the practices working on the side, but he was participating in the 11-on-11 walkthroughs during the first day of minicamp on Tuesday. He said the rehab process has been smooth so far and that he should be ready for the start of training camp in late July. NFL – Ex-NFL WR Golden Tate signs with summer baseball team Former NFL wide receiver is giving baseball another shot. Tate has signed to play for the Port Angeles Lefties of the West Coast League, a summer league for college players. Tate played in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks, Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants. He last played in the NFL in 2020. The 33-year-old played two seasons of college baseball at Notre Dame as an outfielder. He was also twice drafted in the MLB amateur draft in 2007.
