Featured Musicians: Cracked & Hooked The Video: [After THE JUMP: The things to be said.] --------------------- 1. Alabama Preview: Offense starts at the top Milroe is a challenge—baby Vince Young who will destroy you with your legs if you let him. Georgia spied him and held him down; Brian wants to attack him, get got a few times, and keep them off-schedule. WRs are not as threatening as some we've seen; the Gattis generation is gone now. OL has blue chips but the center is wild and the left side is young, especially the left tackle. They use three TEs, one's a fullback, one's a Funchess, one's a Maryland transfer who's meh at both. 2. Alabama Preview: Defense starts at 25:17 The secondary is the best in CFB; the guy opposite the headliner is even better, and Seth loves their nickel-hybrid. True freshman safety is also excellent, free safety is just out there to be the help. They went back to basics this year with Saban's Pattern-Match hybrid system; Georgia really put it to the test and found the LBs are the most likely to break down. The DTs are not so scary, the pass rushers are: Do not get in long downs against these guys because they'll bring in both 1st rounders. On standard downs they'll play a 290-pound SDE instead. Linebackers are the weakness; they're athletes but mistake-prone. Brian wants this to be the Donovan Edwards game, Seth wants to run down the middle with Corum and Mullings. 3. Iowa After Review starts at 48:15 It was Iowa. 4. Texas/Washington Preview starts at 57:04 Hard to figure out this game. Texas is probably the better, Washington is the better big game team because Michael Penix is a big game quarterback. We'd rather face Washington because Texas has the two best DTs in the country and that's how to beat Michigan. They'll also have Xavier Worthy back. Quinn Ewers is really more of a true sophomore—think last year JJ—than the guy ready to take them to the pinnacle, but our Texas friend says they're having a This is the Year season and Washington is the last foe to vanquish on the Revenge Tour. About the Featured Musician: CRACKED & HOOKED This year we are partnering with The Blind Pig for bumper music, since that's where I've seen most of the bands I've been pushing anyways. Ypsilanti's David Freund didn't mean to start a band; he was just learning to play guitar during the pandemic. He started posting his songs, which are bluesgrassy with clever lyrics, on social media, gave himself a goofy name, and started picking up a following quickly. People wanted to see him perform the songs live, so he got some mates to play with him, and now they're a band. They recorded their first album, Wonder Out of Your Mind, over at Grove Studios a year ago Christmas, and put out a new song a few weeks ago. They're playing the Pig on January 31st wsg The City Lines and Good Man's Brother if you want to say you heard about them first. Song choices: Kicked by a Mule (the new one) Before the Dirt Gets Shoved Writer Also because Across 110th Street will get our Youtubes taken now now, the opener and outro: “The Employee is Not Afraid”—Bear vs. Shark “Ruska Vodka”—Motorboat

When Stephanie Harper decided to open Harper Learning Academy in Byram, Mississippi in August, her goal was to create a small, personalized educational setting in which her daughter would thrive. Conventional classroom environments weren't a good match for Harper's child. They also weren't working well for the daughter of Harper's colleague, Tekeeta Funchess. Harper and Funchess had been longtime teachers in the Jackson Public Schools before they left their jobs to provide educational consulting services to public school districts through the firm Harper founded in 2016.  As they worked together, they realized their daughters were experiencing similar challenges in standard school settings. So, they decided to build what they couldn't find and create a warm and welcoming microschool where children can thrive. Several months after his girlfriend and mother of his two children died of a fatal drug overdose, a 25-year-old man was arrested. Cincinnati Police responded to a deceased person call at 2:50 a.m. on Feb. 15. They found the victim unresponsive, and Cincinnati Fire Department officials declared her dead at the scene. Deandrea Funchess, 24, was identified as the victim. Her death was determined to be a homicide by the Hamilton County Coroner's Office. Mayzio Arnold was arrested by the Cincinnati Police Department on July 13 in connection with the death of Funchess. Initially, Funchess' mother was told she died of a drug overdose, but she said it "never made sense" to her. Following the young mother's death, Funchess' family contacted Arnold so she could talk to her grandchildren. Funchess and Arnold had two children together. The WXIX reports that Funchess was actually "internally decapitated," which means that her skull was separated from her spinal column after she was beaten so severely. It appears that Arnold's bond is set at $750,000 according to Hamilton County Jail records. If you like TRUE CRIME TODAY - Be sure to search and subscribe wherever you download podcasts! Six months after the mother of his children died from what he claimed was a drug overdose, an Ohio man is behind bars, accused of allegedly beating the victim so severely, she was "internally decapitated." A statement from Cincinnati Police confirms Mayzio Arnold, 25, was arrested and charged with murder on Wednesday. Investigators allege he caused the injuries that led to the death of 24-year-old Deandrea Funchess. She was found unresponsive on Feb. 15 in a Hartwell home. According to court records obtained by WXIX, the alleged attack on Funchess, Arnold's live-in girlfriend, was so intense, it caused the ligaments of her spinal column to be separated from the base of her skull — an injury known as atlanto-occipital dislocation. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/leah-gordone/support

Cease allowed one unearned run on seven hits and a walk. He struck out eight, while improving to 10-0 with a 1.91 ERA in 11 career starts against the Tigers. He’s the first pitcher to win his first 10 decisions against an opponent since Jamie Moyer started 10-0 against the Marlins in 2006-08. Andrew Vaughn had four hits and Luis Robert drove in a pair of runs for the White Sox. Padres 12, Cubs 5 – Voit homers, drives in 5 as Padres rally past Cubs 12-5 Luke Voit hit a two-run homer and a three-run double as the San Diego Padres rallied from a five-run deficit to hand the Chicago Cubs their eighth straight loss, 12-5. The Padres trailed 5-0 when Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks was pulled after allowing a double to Jake Cronenworth to start the sixth inning. Voit homered off reliever Chris Martin to spark a four-run sixth, and his double off Mychal Givens gave the Padres the lead for good at 7-5 and highlighted a six-run seventh. The Padres have won six of eight. Willson Contreras homered twice, drove in three runs and scored three times on a 3-for-4 night for the Cubs. Today Chicago White Sox (Velasquez 2-3) at Detroit (Faedo 1-2), 1:10 p.m.              WSJM/WCSY 12:50 San Diego (Weathers 0-0) at Chicago Cubs (Kilian 0-0), 8:05 p.m. NHL – National Hockey League – 2022 Stanley Cup Finals Tonight Tampa Bay Lightning at Colorado Avalanche, 8:00 p.m.       (Game 1) NHL – Stanley Cup Final pits Lightning vs. high-scoring Avalanche The Stanley Cup Final is a showdown between the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning and the high-scoring Colorado Avalanche. Colorado is averaging a playoff high 4.61 goals a game. Tampa Bay’s 2.41 goals against is the lowest of any team that made it past the first round. The Lightning know from prior postseason runs how to adjust their style of play for their opponent. This series is another test of containing a team that can fly up and down the ice and fill the net. NHL – Signs Point to Lightning star returning for Cup Final Game 1 Indications are Brayden Point will return for the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final at the Colorado Avalanche. Point has missed the past month after injuring his right leg in Game 7 of the first round against Toronto. Coach Jon Cooper says things are trending toward Point playing in this series opener. Point took part in the Lightning’s final full team practice before Game 1 skating like he was never injured. He was Tampa Bay’s leading goal-scorer in each of the past two Cup runs. NHL – Knights hire Cassidy Bruce Cassidy has been hired to coach the Vegas Golden Knights a week after being fired by the Boston Bruins. Cassidy becomes the Golden Knights’ third coach. He replaces Peter DeBoer, who was fired after Vegas missed the playoffs for the first time in its five-year history. Cassidy had a 245-108-46 record and led the Bruins for the playoffs for six straight seasons. He was fired on June 6, a month after the Bruins lost a seven-game first-round series to Carolina. Golf – McIlroy questions competitive desire of players in LIV Golf Rory McIlroy says he was wrong about his prediction in February that the Saudi-backed rival golf league was “dead in the water.”  He says that’s because he took at face value players like Dustin Johnson who said they were staying on the PGA Tour. McIlroy also described the LIV Golf league as a “pre-Champions Tour” circuit because of the ages of those interested. He says their best days are probably behind them. But he remains curious why younger players like Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed would go over. McIlroy says speaking for himself, at 33 he feels his best days are ahead. NBA – National Basketball Association – 2022 NBA Finals Thursday Golden State Warriors at Boston Celtics, 9:00 p.m.         (GSW Leads 3-2) WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Phoenix Mercury at Indiana Fever, 7:00 p.m. WNBA – WNBA star Griner’s Russia detention extended for third time U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner will remain in Russian custody through at least July 2 after her detention was extended for a third time, Russian state-run media has reported. The report gave no timeline for Griner’s trial, but cited a top Russian diplomat as saying that she will not be considered for detainee swaps until her case has been investigated. The 31-year-old WNBA center was arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling after Russian airport authorities claimed in February to have found cannabis products in her luggage. Her supporters have expressed concern that Moscow will use her as a bargaining chip amid tensions over its war in Ukraine. NCAA – No angst about college athletes cashing in at 1st NIL summit Hundreds of college athletes from schools all over the country are in Atlanta this week. They are attending the inaugural NIL Summit. They are learning from companies about how to build their brands. The summit is the first since the NCAA cleared the way for college athletes to earn endorsement money last July. The NCAA was not at the summit and neither were athletic directors from the nation’s biggest schools. NCAAFB – NCAA athletes still excel in classroom despite pandemic NCAA athletes saw their overall four-year Academic Progress Rate increase to 984, a one-point jump from the most recent data publicly released in May 2020. College sports’ largest governing body opted not to release last year’s numbers because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Men’s basketball finished at 968, up two points from 2020, while baseball, football and women’s basketball all remained even with their 2020 averages at 977, 964 and 983. NCAAWBKB – UConn self-reported 15 minor NCAA violations in 2021 UConn’s athletic department self-reported 15 minor NCAA violations in 2021, including a women’s basketball player accepting cash $40 from fans. The violations were first reported Tuesday by Hearst Connecticut Media, which obtained details of them through a Freedom of Information Act request. They included four violations by the women’s basketball program, three by the football program, and one each in men’s soccer, baseball, softball, field hockey and women’s tennis. The athletic training department and the compliance department also were cited. All 15 violations were considered to be Level III “breach of conduct” violations by the university, the least serious category of NCAA violation. Tennis – Wimbledon – Serena Williams gets wild-card entry for Wimbledon singles Serena Williams is going to play at Wimbledon this year. The All England Club has announced that Williams was awarded a wild-card entry for singles. Williams has not competed anywhere since getting injured during the first set of her first-round match at the All England Club a year ago. And her name did not appear on the women’s singles entry list released by the grass-court Grand Slam tournament earlier this month. But Williams was among six women given a spot in the singles draw via wild cards. The grass-court Grand Slam tournament begins June 27. Williams has won seven of her 23 major championships there. Tennis – US Open – US Open lets Russian tennis players in after Wimbledon ban The U.S. Open will allow tennis players from Russia and Belarus to compete this year despite the ongoing war in Ukraine. That war prompted Wimbledon to ban those athletes. U.S. Tennis Association CEO and Executive Director Lew Sherr tells The Associated Press that the USTA Board decided to let Russians and Belarusians enter the tournament because of “concern about holding the individual athletes accountable for the actions and decisions of their governments.” Sherr said athletes from Russia and Belarus will play at Flushing Meadows under a neutral flag. The U.S. Open starts on Aug. 29. NFL – Detroit Lions sign Devin Funchess to add depth at tight end The Detroit Lions are giving Devin Funchess a chance to make a comeback in the NFL. Detroit signed him as a tight end on Tuesday to add depth to a position group led by T.J. Hockenson. Funchess has not played in the league since 2019. Carolina drafted him out of Michigan in the second round of the 2015 draft and he had 21 touchdown receptions over four seasons with the Panthers. NFL – Bears’ progress at minicamp comes without DE Robert Quinn Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields and wide receiver Darnell Mooney continued building a passing connection as the team’s mandatory minicamp opened Tuesday, but the defense is trying to get by without no-show pass rusher Robert Quinn. Although coach Matt Eberflus had expressed the belief Quinn would attend the workouts, he was absent after also missing all of the Bears’ offseason voluntary work. Quinn is under contract through 2024. NFL – Deshaun Watson again denies sexual misconduct claims Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson says he’s determined to keep fighting to clear his name and insists he never committed sexual misconduct. He stood by previous comments proclaiming his innocence. Watson is facing civil lawsuits from 24 massage therapists in Texas accusing him of sexual assault and harassment. But Watson says he never assaulted, harassed or disrespected anyone. Watson was speaking publicly for the first time since March 25, a week after the Browns signed him to a fully guaranteed $230 million contract despite his complex legal situation. Since then, his legal entanglements have grown with two more women filing lawsuits. NFL – New Charger Mack making progress during busy offseason It has been a busy offseason for Khalil Mack since being traded from the Chicago Bears to the Los Angeles Chargers. In addition to becoming familiar with new teammates and getting up to speed on a new defense, the outside linebacker has been rehabbing from last year’s foot surgery. Considering everything that has gone on the past three months, Mack seems pleased with his progress. Mack has spent most of the practices working on the side, but he was participating in the 11-on-11 walkthroughs during the first day of minicamp on Tuesday. He said the rehab process has been smooth so far and that he should be ready for the start of training camp in late July. NFL – Ex-NFL WR Golden Tate signs with summer baseball team Former NFL wide receiver is giving baseball another shot. Tate has signed to play for the Port Angeles Lefties of the West Coast League, a summer league for college players. The 33-year-old played two seasons of college baseball at Notre Dame as an outfielder. He was also twice drafted in the MLB amateur draft in 2007. Tate played in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks, Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants. He last played in the NFL in 2020. The 33-year-old played two seasons of college baseball at Notre Dame as an outfielder. He was also twice drafted in the MLB amateur draft in 2007. On the same day Robby Anderson and Breshad Perriman signed big-money deals for 2020, the Packers signed ex-Panthers starter Devin Funchess to what is expected to be a bargain contract. Not only does this fit with Brian Gutekunst's theme this offseason, Funchess walks onto the team as at least the third-best receiver, if not second-best, and bolsters a group in need of some help.
