Today's discussion on the podcast is one of depth around the hot topic of NCAA roster limits and how they will fundamentally change the nature of the NCAA forever. In my opinion, there's no better person to have this conversation with than Liberty University's Assistant Track Coach and Meet Director, Mark Fairley. Coach Mark recently written a letter to Congress in hopes of standing before a Federal Judge in April as an advocate for the removal of the NCAA's new proposed changes to roster limits. Coach Mark discusses his involvement and how he has educated his own athletes at Liberty on this issue, getting many to participate and get their voices out there. Coach Mark is a native of Dubuque, Iowa, and has worked his way up the ranks since joining as an interim assistant. Coach Mark found success as an athlete in the world of triathlon, earning his professional racing license in 2019. Coach Mark was a standout athlete at Central College, where he captured the men's steeplechase national title at the 2018 NCAA Division 3 Outdoor Championships as a senior. He has the school record in the steeplechase with a time of 8:57.39. His other PRs include a 4:16.42 in the mile; 8:23 in the 3K and 14:42.67 in the 5K. He was the Central Region Men's XC and Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Coach Mark graduated from Central College with a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science. He has a Master's Degree in sport management and is working toward a second in biblical studies. In today's conversation, we go through Coach Mark's individual accolades and accomplishments, how he rose in his coaching career, and then tackle the hot topic of roster-limits. He takes me through the 2.8 billion dollar NCAA settlement, revenue-sharing, and roster-limits. We discuss all of this at length and what it means for the next era of the NCAA. Episode 269: Developing Youth in Sport - Observations and Opportunities for Improvement

Purple Patch Podcast

In this week's episode of the Purple Patch Podcast, Ironman Master Coach Matt Dixon takes a closer look at youth sports and the development of young athletes. With his experience as a parent, as well as a coach to world-class professional endurance athletes, executives, and amateurs alike for over 15 years, and using his own background in competitive swimming and triathlons, Matt examines the importance of sports for social and physical development in kids and examines the role parents and coaches play in helping to create meaningful experiences. "This is sport. The journey of becoming. That is much more powerful and more important than the outcomes." - Matt Dixon Matt maps out the discussion in a way that applies not only to parents, coaches, and young athletes but also to adult athletes looking to draw insights for their own development journey. This episode covers the role of sports for kids ages 8 to 18 and suggests a healthy route for developing an athletic foundation. It also provides insight into how we can assist our young athletes in moving beyond outcomes or results, to help them develop athletically, while also establishing essential values and character traits that will last well beyond their playing days. "The sporting journey can be a crucible from which we can apply so many of the experiences into almost anything that we do in the rest of our lives. And that becomes really powerful." - Matt Dixon There are trends and challenges in youth sports that interfere with the positive lessons and experiences that organized sports have to offer. From parents who put too much pressure on their kids, to coaches who prioritize winning over development, these issues can create an environment where young athletes don't reach their full potential or lose their love of the game altogether. Matt examines some of the most common problems in youth sports today and offers suggestions on how they can be addressed. For parents and coaches looking to create an environment where young athletes can excel both on the field and off of it, Matt proposes certain habits they should foster to develop a performance culture and encourage a positive athletic journey. "Remember that you are tasked with building an athlete. And in order to do that, you need to ensure that they have passion, they fall in love, they have a strong structure, a really varied skill set, that then when things are important to get focused, they are best equipped and they are fresh mentally. And so you are building an athlete well ahead of developing a runner, developing a swimmer, turning a baseball player into a pitcher." - Matt Dixon Episode Timestamps 00:00 - 07:39 - Welcome and Episode Introduction 07:46 - 11:36 - Matt's Newsings 11:44 - 01:17:53 - The Meat and Potatoes - Episode 269: Developing Youth in Sport: Observations and Opportunities for Improvement Purple Patch and Episode Resources Purple Patch Video Podcast and More Learn more about 1:1 Coaching PODCAST - Episode 47: Child's Play - FUNdamental Lessons from Youth Development in Sport PODCAST - Episode 95: Youth Development in Sport - Performance Anxiety, Specialization, and the Journey Free Webinar - Hard and Hilly Join the Purple Patch Team - Director of Growth and Business Operations The Purple Patch Center is Open - Learn More and Schedule a Visit Purple Patch Coaching Consultation Learn more about our Tri Squad Program Send us a message This episode is sponsored by our collaboration with INSIDE TRACKER. As Athletic Training Month comes to a close, our four part series concludes with our fourth installment looking at Athletic Training Programs in Professional and Collegiate Sports.  My Co-host for this week is Senior Director of Athletic Training at JAG-ONE and founder of the Catalyzingats Podcast Ryan Stevens! Our three guests on the show this week are as follows:  Ayala, MS, ATC, CES CKTP (he/him) is an LIU Brooklyn alumnus and currently serves as the Rutgers Club Sports Head Athletic Trainer through JAG-ONE Athletic Training services where he provides AT services for 64 clubs sports teams. Since becoming a Certified Athletic Trainer in 2016, Alexis has served multiple minor league baseball organizations (Somerset Patriots in 2020, Sussex County Miners and Can-Am League Champion New Jersey Jackals in 2021). Throughout his career outside of minor league baseball Alexis has been provided AT services as a part of multiple Division 1 athletic programs such as Marist University for Women's Lacrosse and volleyball, St. John's University for Men's Lacrosse, and LIU Brooklyn for Baseball and Volleyball. Patrick Zahn, ATC, NSCA-CPT received his Bachelor's degree from Messiah College in 2019 and completed a Master's in Applied Exercise Science (Strength and Conditioning focus) from Concordia University Chicago. Beginning as an AT with passing the BOC in late 2019, he has worked in multiple settings. As an extension of JAG-ONE Athletic Training, he serves Cairn University, providing care for Division 3 athletes with a focus on holistic care, and is passionate as a mentor to teach life-long positive health habits for athletes to use after their sports career is over. Outside of his typical AT responsibilities, Patrick is an Adjunct Professor teaching Exercise Science at Cairn University, and holds a Personal trainer certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Julianna M. Mangano ATC, EMT-B. (she/her) is a full-time Athletic Trainer with JAG-ONE Physical Therapy, serving as the head AT for the Atlantic League's Staten Island Ferryhawks minor league baseball club. Born and raised in Staten Island, New York, she is a 2022 graduate from Marist College (Poughkeepsie, New York) where she received her bachelor's degree in athletic training. It was only fitting she secured a job working for the Ferryhawks post-graduation, affording her the ability to fall in love with baseball and delve deeper into her career. In January-February 2023 she had the opportunity to work as one of the athletic trainers for the California Winter League in Palm Springs, California, caring for 300+ baseball players alongside two athletic trainers over the course of 4 weeks. Julianna became certified as a New York State EMT in 2022 and since starting her career as an AT in 2022 has served other professional sports teams including the Metropolitan Riveters, NY Gotham FC, and Trenton Terror, as well as worked at Mount St. Michaels Academy secondary school in The Bronx.
