Today we peel back the layers of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) — a condition far beyond simple vanity. Host Gabe Howard and clinician Scott M. Granet tear apart the facade of BDD — a mental battle where the mirror becomes your worst enemy. This episode exposes a disorder that distorts reality, making you question every reflection. Forget cosmetic fixes — plastic surgery rarely provides salvation. Scott bares his soul, recounting his harrowing struggle from a college crisis over a few stray hairs to a lifelong fight against the obsessive compulsion to fix what isn't really broken. With raw honesty and expert insights, this conversation dives into the complexities of living with BDD, highlighting the vital role of support systems and cognitive behavioral therapy. Whether you or someone you know battles inner demons or simply seeks a deeper understanding of mental health, this episode promises a captivating exploration of perception versus reality. Special thanks to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America for sponsoring this episode. “If you're somebody with BDD who has a problem with your physical appearance, your first thought is not going to be, I should go see a psychotherapist. Your first thought is probably going to be, I want to get this fixed. And even if they suspect they have a psychiatric problem, a major issue with BDD is that it's often considered a shame based disorder. There can be so much shame associated with this, to the point where people don't want to go for therapy and, you know, they're too embarrassed to tell somebody about this problem.” ~Scott M. Granet, LCSW Today's guest, Scott Granet, LCSW, specializes in the treatment of OCD and BDD. He has presented at numerous conferences worldwide and has taught continuing education classes at universities and other institutions throughout the U.S., including the Rutgers University School of Social Work, the UC Berkeley Extension, the University of Chicago Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy and Practice and the NYU Silver School of Social Work. Mr. Granet is the author of “The Complete OCD Workbook: A Step-by-Step Guide to Free Yourself from Intrusive Thoughts and Compulsive Behaviors” and “Body Dysmorphic Disorder, Mine and Yours: A Personal and Clinical Perspective.” Our host, Gabe Howard, is an award-winning writer and speaker who lives with bipolar disorder. He is the author of the popular book, "Mental Illness is an Asshole and other Observations," available from Amazon; signed copies are also available directly from the author. My guest today shares her personal story of severe postpartum anxiety and depression while appearing in a high-functioning state to those around her. It is important for us to hear real-life accounts from those who look like “everything is fine.” Join us for a closer look from this unique perspective. Caitlin Shadek is a mom of three boys, ages 3, 6, and 8. She is a lawyer who has practiced as a commercial litigator for the past 14 years, but she recently left her job to attend Rutgers University School of Social Work to obtain her master's degree in social work. Her desire is to work with women with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and help bridge the gap in their care between the OB/GYN and the pediatrician. Caitlin felt that lapse in care firsthand when she suffered from severe postpartum depression and anxiety after her first two pregnancies and entered a hospital treatment program when her third son was a toddler. Her own experiences have been the impetus behind her career change and desire to help treat and advocate for better women's mental health care. She is currently an intern at a practice specializing in infertility and prenatal/postnatal counseling. Show Highlights: How Caitlin's story begins about nine years ago with her first pregnancy and the immediate feelings of dread and panic she felt at the moment of birth Why she was afraid to go home from the hospital with her new baby How wearing a catheter for six weeks added to the anxiety she felt about caring for her baby How dark thoughts plagued her–but she never shared them with anyone and pretended that everything was fine How she began therapy and medication when her son was about nine months old, but the dark thoughts and depression continued Why she wanted a second child–despite the serious issues in her life (including self-harming behaviors) How she felt guilt about continuing her medication while pregnant and experienced postpartum depression AGAIN How Caitlin went back to work and put on her “high-functioning postpartum depression face” How her struggles continued into her pregnancy with her third son, and things felt a little different after his birth How the pandemic threw their family into survival mode with everyone at home together Why Caitlin worked very hard to put on a good face until everything culminated in December 2021–and she knew she was NOT OK How Caitlin's therapist sent her to the ER during an intense COVID resurgence because of her depression and suicidal thoughts Why Caitlin agreed to go to the psychiatric floor for treatment–and then tried to change her mind How she was released to go home and enrolled in an outpatient DBT program that changed her life How Caitlin decided what her next phase of work would be–to become a social worker and provide other mothers with the help she had needed Why maternal mental health falls between the OB/GYN and pediatrician and is often overlooked What Caitlin would say to someone in a similar situation Resources: Connect with Caitlin: Instagram Visit www.postpartum.net for resources and support! The state is also facing a historic shortage of jurists, “leading to overworked judges, huge case backlogs and nearly 7,000 defendants in jail without bail, some 500 of them for more than two years despite a law that essentially requires a trial within two years for anyone detained,” NJSN reported. One court official told the state Assembly Budget Committee about the impact the pandemic had on the court system. “Buildings were closed to most in-person trials for more than a year, although other proceedings continued virtually. The business closures and high unemployment led to a housing crisis that resulted in more than 46,000 pending cases that involve landlord-tenant issues,” NJSN reported. “But with all courts open and staff back to work in person, it is impossible to eliminate the backlog of cases with so many open judge seats.” The problem is attributed to the state Senate, where the process is mired, even though the governor is making appointments.According to the National Counsel for State Courts, backlogs at one third of U.S. courts increased by 5%. It would have been worse had courts not held virtual hearings. Using the Court Statistic Project database, the numbers reveal in stark terms the impact the pandemic had in the year it came to America. Dispositions dropped from 43M in 2019 to 28M in 2020. Bench trials fell from 3M in 2019 to under 2M in 2020. Jury trials plummeted from 49K in 2019 to less than 19K in 2020. The Washington Post reported that the Pennsylvania Supreme Court declared a judicial emergency and extended deadlines. Virginia's Supreme Court suspended nonessential proceedings. The Iowa Supreme Court pushed back criminal trials and the Alabama's Supreme Court suspended in-person proceedings. New Jersey Supreme Court Chief Justice Stuart Rabner warned that the judicial shortage “comes with a price.” Listen to my interview with Diana C. Manning, Managing Principal, Bressler, Amery & Ross, P.C., for the fallout from the judicial shortage and swelling case backlogs, and what needs to be done to dig out. A Bitch, A Cow, And A Pig Walked Into A Bar: Why Misogynists Animalize Women - Sherry Colb JD Sherry Colb • http://www lawschool.cornell.edu/faculty-research/faculty-directory/sherry-colb• Book – Mind If I Order the Cheeseburger? #SherryColb #Veganism #Vegan Sherry Colb is an C.S. Wong Professor of Law at Cornell Law School and author of the book, Mind If I Order the Cheeseburger?: And Other Questions People Ask Vegans. If you're vegan, how many times have you been asked these, and other similarly challenging, questions from non-vegans? What about plants? Don't animals eat other animals? There are no perfect vegans, so why bother? Using humor and reason, Sherry Colb takes these questions at face value and also delves deeply into the motivations behind them, coming up with answers that are not only intelligent but insightful about human nature. Through examples, case studies, and clear-eyed logic, she provides arguments for everything from why veganism is compatible with the world's major religions to why vegetarianism is not enough. In the end, she shows how it is possible for vegans and non-vegans to engage in a mutually beneficial conversation without descending into counterproductive name-calling, and to work together to create a more hospitable world for human animals and non-human animals alike. She earned an A.B. from Columbia College (Valedictorian) and a J.D. from Harvard Law School (magna cum laude). After graduation, Colb clerked for Judge Wilfred Feinberg of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and for Associate Justice Harry A. Blackmun of the United States Supreme Court. She was a member of the Rutgers University School of Law faculty in Newark when she joined the Cornell faculty in 2008 and has held the position of Visiting Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Law and Columbia Law School. Her research and teaching interests center on issues of constitutional criminal procedure (especially the Fourth Amendment), animal rights, sexual equality, and evidence. Colb's scholarship has appeared in the Stanford Law Review, the New York University Law Review, the Columbia Law Review, the Michigan Law Review, and elsewhere. She has published a book about the modern challenges of sex equality, When Sex Counts: Making Babies and Making Law (Rowman & Littlefield 2007), and she authored a book about veganism and animal rights, “Mind If I Order the Cheeseburger?” and Other Questions People Ask Vegans (Lantern 2013). Most recently, she has co-authored a book about animal rights and abortion, Beating Hearts:Abortion and Animal Rights (Columbia University Press 2016). She composes a bi-weekly column on Verdict.Justia.com as well as regular posts on the blog, Dorf on Law. A Plan to Cap Insulin Prices May Not Be Helpful 30 million people in the U.S. live with diabetes, and access to insulin can be expensive. More than 1 in 5 people with private insurance pay more than $35 a month for this necessary medication. The U.S. Senate has a plan to cap insulin prices for certain diabetics, but critics say this plan would not help make insulin affordable for a majority of people. Plus, many people have been following the discoveries of the James Webb Space Telescope, or JWST, with baited breath. Astronomers may have found the youngest exoplanet we know of. And a deep space hoax of a chorizo slice fooled the astronomy community. Joining Ira to talk about these stories and other science news of the week is Katherine Wu, staff writer for The Atlantic based in New Haven, Connecticut. What You Need To Know About Monkeypox Last week, the White House declared the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency. Currently there are a little over 9,000 confirmed cases in the United States, and just under 30,000 worldwide. Since the end of May, monkeypox has been spreading in countries where it has not been previously reported. The virus is mainly spreading within gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men. And because of that there is stigma associated with the outbreak. Ira talks with Rachel Roper, virologist at the Brody Medical School at East Carolina University, and Perry Halkitis, dean of the Rutgers University School of Public Health, to explain the basics of transmission, answer listener questions, and debunk misinformation about the monkeypox outbreak. Frenemies, Lovers, And The Fate Of The Cosmos: Our Galaxy Tells All Our galaxy, the Milky Way, is 13.6 billion years old, all-knowing, and a little sassy. It has a rich social life of friends, frenemies, and even love interests—all other galaxies in the local group, including the stunning Andromeda. And the Milky Way is a little disappointed that we've stopped telling as many stories about it. Or at least, that's how folklorist and astronomer Dr. Moiya McTier imagines the galaxy's personality when writing her new book, “The Milky Way: An Autobiography of Our Galaxy.” The book stretches from the beginning of the universe to the birth of our planet, and then on to the eventual theoretical end of the cosmos. Along the way, we learn both the science of how stars form and galaxies collide, and the many stories and myths humans have told about these bodies throughout our relatively brief lives. McTier joins Ira to tell all (on behalf of the Milky Way), and explain the importance of story in scientific knowledge and discovery. Read an excerpt of the book on sciencefriday.com. Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

The poet Walt Whitman wrote in his 1867 edition of Leaves of Grass that New York was a “City of the world! (for all races are here, All lands of the earth make contributions here…”) How that city came to be on the island of Manhattan, and what it has meant for the United States and the world over the centuries, is the subject of Marc Aronson's new book Four Streets and a Square: A History of Manhattan and the New York Idea (Candlewick Press, 2021). Aronson argues that the density of Manhattan has put different kinds of people close to each other--fostering curiosity, conflict and new cultural hybrids ranging from blackface minstrelsy to musical theater to street photography To give a focus and structure to his story, Aronson organizes his material around streets and squares that have, in different times, framed formative encounters between New Yorkers: Wall Street, Union Square, Forty Second Street, 125th Street, and West Fourth Street. Aronson's narrative reaches from the days of Munsee villages to the recent past, but he devotes special attention to Manhattan since 1900, when the island at the center of New York City matured into a global capital of culture, media, and finance. While well aware of the inequalities and injustice present in Manhattan and New York City, and the ravages of the coronavirus pandemic, Aronson keeps with faith with the idea of Manhattan as an inclusive home and a site of great cultural energy. In September 2017, Hurricane María devastated the island of Puerto Rico. A group of Johns Hopkins affiliates - two physicians, a PhD student in health communication, and an electrical engineer - wanted to help their homeland. They formed an organization called Puerto Rico Stands, with the goal of supporting the long-term recovery of the island. They decided to focus their efforts on Sector Maná, a rural area that had been directly hit by the hurricane. Over the past several years, Puerto Rico Stands has worked with leaders and community members to help Sector Maná become more resilient and self-sustaining in the face of the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria, as well as other major challenges, including the coronavirus. Today, we're speaking with two of the co-founders of Puerto Rico Stands - Yonaira Rivera, now an assistant professor in health communication at Rutgers University School of Communication and Information, and Hadi Esieley-Barrera, an electrical engineer at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. We're joined by Jose Carlos Sanchez Cintron with El Familion, a group of community leaders in Sector Maná who mobilized the community immediately after Hurricane María and worked with the Puerto Rico Stands team. Jose Carlos will be speaking in Spanish, with translation provided by Hadi.
