Locked On Big 12 - Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast
During his testimony in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee last month, Charlie Baker, the new president of the NCAA, argued that not only does the association oppose college athletes becoming employees of their institutions, but the athletes themselves are overwhelmingly against it as well.Drawing from his seven months of personal experience in the role, Baker informed lawmakers that he had conversed with approximately a thousand student-athletes since assuming the position, and he hadn't encountered a single one who expressed a desire to be treated as an employee. He emphasized the significance of this observation. However, this assertion was met with skepticism both within and outside the NCAA community. Chase Griffin, a senior backup quarterback at UCLA and a prominent advocate for college athletes profiting from their performances, found Baker's claim implausible. Griffin, who recently launched a newsletter called The Athlete's Bureau to amplify college athletes' perspectives, contested Baker's statement, highlighting its literal impossibility.Contrary to Baker's anecdotal evidence, Bill Carter, a sports marketer who operates the NIL consulting firm Student-Athlete Insights, presented different findings. Carter shared the results of an email survey he conducted with a panel of 1,086 current college athletes, revealing that 73% of respondents were in favor of becoming employees of their institutions, and more than half expressed interest in joining a college athlete union.Acknowledging that his survey wasn't scientifically rigorous, Carter argued that it likely provides a more accurate representation of college athletes' views on employment than what Baker conveyed to the senators.Baker's testimony left questions unanswered regarding how he arrived at the conclusion of unanimous opposition among athletes to employment status. Critics wondered whether he had inferred athletes' disinterest due to their silence on the matter or if he actively solicited their opinions in an unbiased manner. The NCAA has been pressed for clarification on Baker's statement and for further insights into college athletes' stances on employment, direct compensation, and unionization.Despite repeated inquiries from Sportico, the NCAA has not provided substantial clarification. Initially, the association's communications department offered letters from Cody Shimp, chair of the Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and four commissioners of HBCU conferences advocating against employee status for college athletes.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Trustees and Presidents- Opportunities and Challenges In Intercollegiate Athletics
My guests today are two national leaders in the college athlete's rights space. Congresswoman Lori Trahan from Massachusetts has been an outspoken advocate for college sports reform and for strengthening Title IX compliance. Chase Griffin, UCLA Quarterback and National NIL Athlete of the Year, recently appeared at a Congressional hearing and spoke of the synergies NIL opportunities have with the purpose of higher education. Three important takeaways for presidents came from this conversation: 1. Open direct lines of communication with student athletes to understand their perspectives and needs. As Chase Griffin emphasized, presidents should not rely solely on athletic directors or coaches to represent athlete views. 2. Prioritize Title IX compliance and closing loopholes that disadvantage women's sports. Strengthening Title IX enforcement is an urgent need that presidents have power to address now. 3. Prepare for coming changes like NIL rights and revenue sharing that will further empower student athletes. Presidents should engage positively with these changes rather than resist them, as the athletes themselves are driving this progress.
As the country shifts into full-fledged Draft Mode, the name “Chase Griffin” may not ring a bell. You won't see the UCLA quarterback's name appear in mock drafts. Griffin still has one year of eligibility and the former Gatorade Player of the Year in Texas hasn't seen the field a ton. However, his impact off the field has been substantial. The two-time “NIL Athlete of the Year” has shown all college athletes how to navigate this new wild west. Griffin is the first active college athlete to testify in front of Congress on NIL (Name, Image and Likeness), launched The Athlete's Bureau on Substack and has arguably been the most public voice on the subject. (You can follow Griffin on X and IG.)This is all strange new terrain for college sports with 19- and 20-year-olds jumping in and out of the transfer portral. What does the future hold? Griffin helps us make sense of it all. You can listen to the audio above or inside the Go Long Podcast feeds on Apple, Spotify and YouTube. Video is below. Also, for more, check out this piece on Griffin at Dave Campbell's Texas Football, written by Carter Yates. Thanks, all.Miss Part I of our Mailbag this week? Chip Kelly, the Head Coach of the UCLA Bruins football team, once remarked that he wouldn't be surprised if this episode's guest Chase Griffin wound up as President of the United States one day. And after getting to spend some time with Chase, I think Coach Kelly's expectations might actually be a little on the low side. Chase is currently a UCLA QB, and that on its own would be a pretty remarkable accomplishment. But it really just scratches the surface. You see, Chase is among the most successful college athletes in terms of name-image-likeness, the new ability of college athletes to make money marketing products and services. And with over 30 brand and charitable partnerships, Chase is VERY successful. So successful in fact, that he's TWICE been named NIL Male Athlete of the Year. In our conversation, we talk in depth about both his football and NIL experiences, and what he believes contributes to his remarkable accomplishments in each. We also discuss the advice he shares with other athletes seeking to emulate his success, what he believes the role of universities should be in supporting athletes in NIL, his feelings on sharing media revenue directly with athletes, and much, more more. And in a bit of breaking news, we even talk about possible running mates choices should he ever decide to make that run for President.
Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy were set to launch new, tech-forward golf league TGL, but those plans have been postponed one year due to a disaster at their custom venue. We discuss the implications for TGL — and how its deal with ESPN is shaping its decisions. We also take a look at over $1 billion in dead money currently on NFL rosters in the form of injured quarterbacks. Plus, we hear from UCLA quarterback and two-time male NIL Athlete of the Year winner Chase Griffin on how he's turning NIL into a long-term career with the launch of his publication, The Athlete's Bureau.

Welcome back to the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast.Today's show dives into the collision of culture, sports, and finance. We talk with Chase Griffin, a student-athlete and QB at UCLA, who has become a pioneer in the college athletics Name Image Likeness (NIL) movement and is the 2x winner of the NIL Male Athlete of the Year awards from the NIL Summit and Opendorse.Chase has excelled on and off the field, so he's no stranger to success. In high school, he was the Texas Gatorade Player of the Year, and he turned down Ivy League offers to commit to UCLA. At UCLA, he's played behind NFL draft pick Dorian Thompson-Robinson and put up strong performances on the field. Off the field, he's been a leader in the NIL movement and an exemplary scholar-athlete, to the point where his coach at UCLA, Chip Kelly, has said, “if you could buy stock in a human, buy stock in Chase Griffin.”Chase has deftly navigated the rapidly changing landscape of the NIL to secure over 30 NIL brand deals and launched the community / charity giving platform #NILforGood. He recently joined Range Media Partners as Athlete/Creator in Residence and contributes to Range business operations across Sports, NIL, Film, TV, Music, and Social Impact.Chase and I had a fascinating discussion about how the NIL could change college sports as we know it and how it will coincide with more investment into college athletics. At a time when private equity firms are investing into companies that are part of the developing NIL ecosystem and possibly even investing into collegiate athletics conferences, Chase shares his views on the impact that the NIL and financialization of sports has on athletes, colleges, pro sports, and broader student bodies.Congrats on all the accomplishments in your young career thus far, Chase. Thanks for coming on the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast to share your experiences and wisdom on the NIL.

Trustees and Presidents- Opportunities and Challenges In Intercollegiate Athletics
Chase Griffin, a UCLA quarterback heading for his third year in 2023, has a boatload of great insight and advice for senior campus leaders about how NIL really works. In this conversation, he tells us his perspective and shares how he brings his personal mission and beliefs into his work on and off the field. Since 2019, he has earned a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and is on track to earn his second master's degree before he completes his football eligibility. Griffin is also involved in charitable NIL endeavors, including the L.A. Food Bank. He understands deeply the challenges food insecurity brings to a campus and its surrounding areas. Chase is also an active contributor to Senator Chris Murphy and Representative Lori Trahan's most recent NIL bill, submitted for consideration at the end of July. In the release from Murphy's office, Griffin said: "For the past two years NIL has enabled college athletes, like me, to become small business owners, taxpayers, support the families that raised us, contribute to charities, and re-invest in the communities that we represent. My lived experience with NIL is why I wholeheartedly support Senator Murphy, Congresswoman Trahan, and the College Athlete Economic Freedom Act. This legislation codifies our NIL rights, preserves the economic progress that we have already made, and aligns the United States Congress with college athletes on the right side of history." This is a must-listen podcast to understand an insider's perspective on what the future holds for big-time college athletes.

20 years from now, we may look back and say UCLA Quarterback Chase Griffin was one of the first college athletes to transform the motivation for athletes to immerse themselves in business ventures at an early age. When the former Texas Gatorade National Player of the Year is not throwing touchdowns, he is constantly making brand deals, public speaking, consulting, immersing himself venture capital, and even making music. While his number one goal is win the Rose Bowl and a National championship, there is rare downtime for Chase. The conversation around name, image and likeness (NIL) has been going on throughout the 21st Century. The NCAA reached a point in 2021 where student athletes across the country became allowed to monetize off NIL and since then it's taken over the division-1 college sports landscape. Today, top talent such as University of Alabama quarterback and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young is making millions of dollars thanks to endorsement deals, but it is a lot to be able to manage while also being a student athlete. UCLA redshirt-junior quarterback Chase Griffin is a student athlete executive in residence with UniWorld Group. Chase has credited UWG with helping set him up for his future as he is learning more about the media agency business and preparing for a career post-football. Walk for a bit around UCLA's campus with quarterback Chase Griffin and you'll almost certainly hear him called by his nickname: "President Chase." While he doesn't start, Griffin's garnered a national profile, mostly for his deal-making prowess and his head coach is among those predicting he could hold high office one day, or run a massive company. The former Texas high school standout has inked sponsorships with Degree, LinkedIn, Boost Mobile and others -- about 20 deals to date. His base at UCLA isn't an accident -- Griffin sees himself in the image of UCLA greats and trailblazers like Ashe, Abdul-Jabbar and Joyner-Kersee. For part two of our inside look at how college students are making money under the new name, image and likeness rules, we went to Atlanta and LA to visit with Griffin. Here's Jason Kelly's sit-down with the QB (and future POTUS?).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
