Jenny Watts is back with Season 2 of The Normal Kind of Disabled podcast and this season we are spicing things up as she is joined by others who are also living alongside a disability, illness or mental health or individuals who's lives have in one way or another been affected by one. Why ?!... to normalise what it truly means, is and embodies to be and become these labels called disabled and ill. The NKD podcast has been created to provide AWARENESS to the multitude of disabilities and illnesses out there, INSIGHT as to what it is truly like living in society with a disability or illness, to EMPOWER individuals to embrace their bodies, what has happened to them and to unapologetically go after the lives they deep down desire. And finally to UNITE, uniting the bridge of understanding between family members, doctors, friends, employers and society between those in which have been labelled disabled and ill and those who are deemed "normal". The NKD podcast has been created in order to spread awareness and encourage transformative change that we all in this community believe is beyond needed within society when it comes to its approach and views on disabilities, illness and mental health. So now you know the purpose behind the Normal Kind of Disabled lets get back to season 2 of the podcast and this very episode ! which is with no other than Miss Holly May Cookson who at the age of 27 was diagnosed with CML, Chronic Myelogenous Leukaemia. Diagnosed only two years ago, in this episode Holly describes what receiving the magnitude of a cancer diagnosis at such a young age was like and the challenges herself and her family faced. Holly provides insight during this episode as to what steps followed for her after diagnosis for others also on this journey, and how she has attempted to re-build and create a new life for herself today while safely taking her illness along with her for the ride. It is safe to say within society cancer is one of the most known and feared diagnosis there is and Holly most certainly dose not hold back on the truths of what experiencing cancer as your reality can truly be like. Work comes in many different forms and you may or may not have a traditional societal job right now and that may or may not be down to your disability or illness. But in my opinion there isnt a human being alive who gets through the day without some level of work being done. Aint nobody round here not working !. And there was just no way i was going to ever create this podcast series without exploring and discussing one of the most taboo subjects when it comes to living a life alongside an illness or disability, and that's Work. Its often the subject in which as a community we are most judged, exploited, hurt and at a disadvantage in and so your daaymm right im bringing awareness to it. So in this episode i discuss being disabled and having those roles and jobs you have no option to turn up to in your life for example the job of being a mother or father, sister, somebody's child ect. I discuss having a disability and navigating the traditional working world and what that can be like in todays society. I approach being employed and how to navigate work demands with a disability or illness. I discuss you being a boss, being the employer and in charge of somebody else's work. I highlight how having a job or a workload can provide fulfilment, meaning and be a very healthy addition to our lives. But not without discussing how it can also be very traumatic and even life threatening if not navigated right. So as always im blooming discussing it all here and in the usual way of how i role by sharing my experience within the complex world of work living alongside my disability to date and sharing all the good, bad and the ugly i have learned along the way. If there is anyone who would like any help or advice regarding anything discussed within this episode or would like to share their own personal experience or advice and be involved in the NKD community in anyway. Whatever you do in life make sure you show up, you dare to dream & that you actually take your true selves along with you for the ride. In this episode i tackle the very taboo subject of keeping positive and healthy whilst living alongside our complex disabilities and illness. I also address how i handled keeping positive and healthy during a mental breakdown and how i flipped the script and old teachings on this thing called positivity. To get myself from almost taking my own life to grabbing the reigns and taking charge of it !. I discuss things in this episode like positive self talk, mindfulness, meditation, routines, mindset, the comfort zone, anxiety, the list goes on !. In true Jenny style i do my best to blow up what we all know of positivity and a healthy mindset and instead ask you all to open your minds to new theories regarding keeping positive and healthy that have seem to help and have massive impacts on my life. I was textbook queen of positive and healthy for a decade after becoming disabled and guess where that inevitably lead me... self combusting and erupting in breakdown central. So in this episode i would like to invite you to leave all what you know and have learnt previously regarding keeping positive and healthy at the door while i expose the truths about keeping positive and healthy alongside a disability and illness and share with you all my journey and everything learnt to date. Biggest bit of advice for you right now regarding this topic ?! never become so hung up on the discoveries of why in life or the portrayal or goal of something in life, that we become blind to all the very real happenings of right now. If there is anyone who would like any help or advice regarding anything discussed within this episode or would like to share their own personal experience or advice and be involved in the NKD community in anyway. Relationships of all kinds require a lot from us and they also fulfil a great deal of us too!. So i think its safe to say they are definitely of great importance and definitely something we should look at being able to navigate in a healthy way. After all as human beings we are designed to be social communal creatures, we are not suppose to do this crazy thing called life alone! But lets be honest, relationships can be very difficult to navigate while we have so many other complexities going on. In this episode i discuss a whole variety of different relationships and how i feel a disability or illness can play a part in them. I discuss relationships with ourselves, friends, emotions, family, things, siblings, abuse, our illness or disability in itself, romantic partners, death, sex the lot !. Now i tend to view relationships like they are an extension of us, especially ones we have the power over choosing ourselves. I also believe they can often hold the key to revealing a lot about ourselves and where we are currently on our being and becoming disabled journey by looking at them. In this episode i am going to highlight discovering and reconnecting with the real you that's potentially hiding away right now. To help you understand and see what not living your life as your true authentic self has possibly caused or what it has the potential to cause to your life if you keep denying yourself of YOU !. I wanna shed light on ways to recognise those auto pilot numbing behaviours we have all become so accustom too. And then the fun bit, how to find the real you hiding in there and discover and go after what it is you truly want and desire out of life regardless of your disability. It is hard to be who you truly are in this world especially if you are disabled or ill, after all how do you live and love from within a body that constantly keeps failing you and not only that but from what society views as failing too? Like i have got to be honest its not an easy standpoint to take on the world as yourself as, so that is why this episode has been created. Aint nobody round here choosing to be disabled or ill, you can trust me on that!. So why are we accepting it as a way in which fully consumes our existence and stops us from ever truly living ?. In this episode i delve into discussing the word that on becoming disabled your whole life seems mapped out by and revolves around and that's Diagnosis. Now the topic of diagnosis beyond fascinates me and i quite honestly have many conflicting thoughts upon the matter as you are about to hear. Through my own personal journey in this episode i talk about what its like to have your body completely fall apart and not to be given a full diagnosis or answers, yet to still be gifted with the title of disabled anyway. Controversially the journey i have been on regarding diagnosis in my life has made me question whether being given a full diagnosis is a good or bad thing upon becoming disabled and trying to navigate this new life for yourself ?. I want to discuss being miss diagnosed and having further harm cause to you and your body by receiving wrong diagnosis. The swamp of unanswerable questions and the searching we ourselves can get wrapped in and whether they are helping to aid us and this new life or tarnishing it ?!.But if there is one thing that i am certain of is that you can define your own future and who you are today regardless of what is told to you and what diagnosis you receive. Because if i would of wholeheartedly believed what was told to me and not gone off my instincts of what i believed was possible i wouldn't have legs right now. A piece of paper is just a piece of paper, a diagnosis is just a diagnosis, the branding of disabled is just the branding of a word. But what is possible and what can be accomplished, now that's decided by you !.If there is anyone who would like any help or advice regarding anything discussed within this episode or would like to share their own personal experience or advice and be involved in the NKD community in anyway. I really don't think its possible to have the life changing event of becoming disabled or being diagnosed with an illness happen to you and there not be trauma that's created from that. Becoming disabled shocked me into trauma and i spent a decade after the event unbeknown to me being left stunned locked in it. With no real guidance or help while constantly building and adding more stress and trauma into the mix. It wasn't until i had built that much on top of myself and i got hit with PTSD from another event that this initial becoming disabled trauma was ever even looked at, addressed and also realised. And i wonder for how many of us that trauma has got us locked in and controlled by and we don't even know it. So in this episode i discuss my own personal journey with regards to trauma living alongside my disability. I highlight ways in which to work on recognising and addressing pain and trauma within yourself. Many trauma based topics get flung on the table for discussion such as pain, loneliness, trauma inflicted by others, drowning in unanswerable questions the list goes on. In this episode i also help to recommend ways in which to navigate healthily exploring your own trauma and more importantly give you the heads up on what to expect and look out for when you do open up to your trauma, because things can get.... weird. And last but not least discuss once its faced how you evolve and grow from it while finding meaning in the brutalities you faced. Suppressed trauma will always come out especially when its as powerful and mighty as trauma created by becoming disabled, cause that trauma is volcanic believe me !. But when you flip the script on trauma and instead of having it control you, you control it. The possibilities of what you can achieve and create are endless because there's nothing but absolute power behind it all. In this episode i discuss my experience of how not being able to accept disabled as my reality and what i had became for a whole decade, how that lead me to supressing and squishing my true self down to embarrassingly become a robotting real housewife of nowhere land. I highlight survival mechanisms we can do such as the blocking of feelings and emotions and how that can impact your life and the lives of those around you. I discuss how and why the preconceived notion that being disabled is a bad thing in society can make you turn and fight against yourself and your disability instead of the broken systems in place out there. We learned to hide and deny who and what we truly are, to squish ourselves silently into the shadows or outwardly behind a masquerade to make society and others feel comfortable in our presence, all just striving to be classed as this thing called normal. Many of us will be doing this right now to ourselves and not even realise, i had been doing it for a whole decade before i noticed. And let me tell you this whole hiding and denying way of living is a brutal thing to experience, to become aware of and to transition from... but my god is it overdue and needed !. This episode was created to show and highlight the realities and the very real dangers of what hiding, denying and suppressing your true self and your disability or illness can cause. In this episode i help others notice hiding and denying behaviours within themselves and their journey and to help show ways in which to start to be proud, love, recognise and embrace who you truly are, disability or no disability. There really is no recovery from becoming disabled especially if your disability or illness is incurable like mine, i would say its kind of a thing your stuck with !. So why is there a two part episode on recovery then ? you might ask.... well i see the 'recovery period' as the first three years after initially becoming disabled. Its the fighting for your life, all soldier's on deck, saying goodbye to your old life and learning to adapt to this new body and life you have been given. It is also the time period where coping mechanisms to this being and becoming disabled journey of ours gets created and imbedded within us such as blocking or hiding and denying. And highly emotive feelings such as loneliness, feeling trapped and depressed can also arise. So i think its safe to say, a pretty important time frame in which to discuss. The recovery period is my heart and where i was honestly shaped into who i am as a person today. And so you don't think I'm going to create a podcast on this whole being and becoming disabled journey and skip out the most vulnerable, challenging, soul defining, reason why the rest of my journey went the way it did part, absolutely not !. Especially when this is the time period where help, support and guidance is really needed to help us navigate the magnitude of all this and everything that we are experiencing that is currently not out there for us. In this episode i discuss my recovery period and try to highlight things to be mindful of feeling and experiencing during this time for others currently going through their recovery period. For families and loved ones who are the caregivers of those during this time i highlight things to help you also to firstly know what to possibly expect to enable you to safely help care for your loved one but to also provide you with insight as to how they might be feeling too. I go all in and discuss things like having the invasion of help with things like your personal care, adapting to life back home after becoming disabled. I also highlight in this episode how sometimes the experience and what is demands of us to physically try our best to recover or get a glimpse of our old lives back. How that can have an effect and sometimes stop you all together from mentally recovering from what's just happened. So as you can see i blooming discuss it all, that much so i have had to do a part two on recovery as its just too much of a crucial time period not to make sure its discussed and the realities of what it can be like to experience and go through, shared. If there is anyone who would like any help or advice regarding anything discussed within this episode or would like to share their own personal experience or advice and be involved in the NKD community in anyway. Not to show favouritism here or anything but i think this episode is personally one of my favourites of the whole of series 1 so i promise you, its worth a listen. In this episode i step away from how you might be feeling and what you might experience during your recovery period like we discussed in Recovery Part 1 and in this episode i start to address what might actually help during this time. Cause its blooming brutal you might want or need your girl to share some advice. Now i do this in my usual way of course by reflecting back on my recovery period and highlighting things i found helped me and things i found most definitely didn't. This episode may also be helpful for those who are the support system or caregivers to those with a disability or illness as it may help provide you with helpful tools and insight to enable you to safely help and care for your loved one. As i have said before the Recovery period is my heart and what made me into both the good and bad of who i am today and this episode takes you through how i worked my ass off to attempt this thing called recovery. Now the reason this episode has been created is because i don't want anyone to let the initial horrors and horrific experiences encountered during the recovery period to mist your view of what being this thing called disabled is actually about. Yes it has some horrifically shocking parts to it but that's not the whole of it!. There's an amazing life to be had and created which a lot of that will be created through these tough times.... my recovery period made me, not initially granted, initially i was floored and spent a decade after stumbling through life stuck in fight mode from it, but i stand by it today as being the very f***ing thing that made me ! In this episode I discuss my thoughts, feelings and personal journey with this jazzy thing called pain management and trust me when i say i embarrassingly do not hold back !. I share my experience of what pain management so far on my being and becoming disabled journey has brought to me. I highlight what being addicted to a very highly addictive prescribed pain medication and having to withdraw from them twice was like. I even talk about my time jumping on the cannabis oil hype in the hopes that it would help with pain and lets not forget the miracle it could preform and have it potentially cure me. All of which i explain how it effected me and my life living alongside my disability and how it undoubtedly was a big factor towards me hitting that lovely destination i like to call, breakdown central !. But what's that saying, you cant keep a good girl down for long ?!... well from the point of breakdown central to now doing a complete 360 and turning my life around and finally gathering the knowledge i needed regarding pain management from the start. I have created this episode to help and advise to you all what i have learnt along the way and insight to be wary of to hopefully help you navigate the management of pain living alongside your disability or illness in your life today.I really feel like both pain management and trauma are the frontiers of this being and becoming disabled journey. I believe that if they are correctly navigated and dealt with in a healthy way then you will go from strength to strength and undoubtedly create an amazing life for yourself and no disability or illness will get in the way of that being achieved. However get it wrong and if the support isn't there then the results can be catastrophic and then some !If there is anyone who would like any help or advice regarding anything discussed within this episode or would like to share their own personal experience or advice and be involved in the NKD community in anyway.
