A group of Indigenous soldiers from Peepeekisis Cree Nation in Saskatchewan stormed Juno Beach alongside 14,000 other Canadians 80 years ago, turning the tide during the Second World War. Host Jeff Douglas is joined by the CBC's Jason Warick, who met with some of their descendants ahead of a ceremony in France on Wednesday to honour their sacrifice.

Irving Locker was only 19 when he was called up to fight in World War II. He'd never even left his village in New Jersey. So when he stormed the Normandy beaches with 150,000 of his fellow soldiers, June 6, 1944 became the most important day of his life. The young Jewish American landed at Utah Beach and went on to play a part in the liberation of the Gardelegen Concentration Camp, about 100 miles west of Berlin. Locker will shortly turn 100 and is making what might be his last trip to France to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Our correspondent Fanny Allard met with him in Florida before he left. This is his story.

Troops from the British Empire, Canada and America fought their way ashore on the beaches of Normandy in Northern France, and quickly made their way inland, despite huge losses. This massive sacrifice is remembered each year with extensive celebrations all along the Normandy coastline. These include memorial services, fly-pasts, fireworks, pipe bands and marches. In this podcast, John and Will highlight their five favourite D-Day locations, and reveal some of the fascinating history. 2019 is likely to be the last time that most D-Day veterans attend the event, as all are now in their 90s.
