Where in the world am I? In San Diego today, talking about Cape Breton, Canada . Hi there. I'm Dr. Mary Travelbest, world traveler, professor, marketing expert, and all-around fun person. And I'm excited to connect with fellow travelers and share our experiences. Quick-fire FAQ: Your mom, grandmother, or even your daughter told you to be careful when traveling solo. But did they ever do it? You are on your way. The question I get asked is: What should I tell someone who discourages me from traveling? Answer: You can turn it around and ask for specific information on what they know about solo travel, how they learned about it, and what facts support their knowledge. Do not be confrontive, but do ask for some examples so that you can diffuse the situation. In the long run, they want what's best for you. Remember, they don't have any ulterior motive; they just want to be helpful. When you tell them where you are going, how prepared you are, and that you have a sound system of backups, they will wish you well. 60-second confidence challenge Your challenge is to use your MAP App at night. It's not the same as daytime so that you will face some additional challenges, but once you do it, you will gain confidence. In future episodes, we will discuss walking at night in more detail. If you like today's Confidence Challenge, my book series dives deeper into using maps and how to build confidence using them—link in description." See Book A for addressing this challenge. You can find it on our website at https://www.5stepstosolotravel.com/ or on Amazon. It's a several-part series. Destination Deep‑Dive Today's special destination is: Cape Breton, Canada, and the Cabot Trail. Today, I'm taking you along one of the most breathtaking drives in the world — the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The sheer beauty of this place will leave you in awe. Cape Breton Highlands National Park anchors this famous loop, which you can drive either from Chéticamp on the west or Ingonish Beach on the east — about 104 kilometers apart. I suggest starting counterclockwise, from east to west, for the best morning vistas on the right side of the road, and later, sunset views along the coast. Before you go — fill your gas tank! There are only a few gas stations along the way. This area is all about the outdoors. For hikers, the Skyline Trail is a 6.5-kilometer loop, approximately two hours long, offering sweeping ocean views — one of the most popular hikes in Canada, with possible moose sightings and breathtaking cliffs. If you prefer a shorter option, try Broad Cove Mountain. Alternatively, head east to the Coastal Trail or west to the Fishing Cove Trail or Corney Brook Trail, which passes by the waterfalls. If you don't have camping gear, you can rent ready-pitched cabin tents called oTENTiks — a great option to experience the park overnight. Seafood lovers, you're in luck! There are numerous small, local restaurants serving lobster, scallops, and fresh fish. And if you want a local experience, stop by a whale museum or take a whale and seal cruise — both are worth the time. Where to stay: For budget stays, CabotTrailHostel.com offers beds with good value. I stayed at the Bear on the Lake, located in Whycocomagh on the Bras d'Or Lake, which is centrally situated for exploring the Cabot Trail. Vibe: Welcoming, social, clean, and safe for solo women travelers; shared kitchen and lake-view deck for relaxing evenings. Now back to the travel sights: Outside the park, stop in Baddeck, home of the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, and don't miss their famous lobster suppers. In Sydney and North Sydney, you can explore a miners' museum, local parks, and even take a ghost tour. One morning, I left my hostel before seven, snacks packed and spirits high. The drive was pure joy — no traffic lights, sunshine, and that incredible Celtic charm everywhere. Next time, I will visit the Gaelic College in St. Ann's (Ceilidh trail music and crafts). My Irish roots would be smiling. I even met a 70-year-old postmaster who invited me for a private swim in a local lake with a private entrance. Hidden from view, I took a spontaneous dip with permission from the owner-and yes, it was a nude swim in nature! I did lose my glasses, which I will mention later on, but it was worth it for that moment of freedom. Hidden from view, I took a spontaneous dip with permission from the owner— and yes, it was a nude swim in nature! I did lose my glasses, which I will mention later on, but it was worth it for that moment of freedom. Cape Breton surprised me with its strong Celtic culture — there's even a school for the Gaelic language. By the end of the day, I had driven nearly 600 kilometers, my heart full and my camera full of beauty. Other stops you can make if you stay longer: Stop by Glenora Distillery in Glenville for a quick visit or coffee (optional whisky tasting is available if you wish!). Continue to Margaree Harbour — stop at the beach for photos of where the river meets the sea. Visit the AcadianChéticampVillage of Chéticamp, known for rug hooking and vibrant cChéticamp Lunch in Chéticamp: The Doryman Pub & Grill or Harbour Restaurant (seafood and great view). Continue north to Pleasant Bay and visit the Whale Interpretive Centre. On the east side of the Trail, you can find Breakfast: Coffee and a bagel at the hostel or in Baddeck (try High Wheeler Café).

In this episode of Gangland Wire, retired Tulsa homicide detective Mike Huff joins host Gary Jenkins to break down one of the most shocking mob hits in U.S. history. Det. Huff tells about the 1981 murder of businessman Roger Wheeler at Southern Hills Country Club and the investigation that ended in the arrest of Boston F.B.I. agent Paul Rico. You can learn more about this story by reading Mike's book, Killing My Father: The Inside Story of the Biggest FBI Corruption Scandal in History. What started as a local homicide case quickly unraveled into a national organized crime conspiracy involving Florida Jai Alai gambling, the Winter Hill Gang, and notorious Boston mob boss Whitey Bulger. Huff shares how he uncovered links to FBI corruption, the Dixie Mafia, and hitman John Martorano, who eventually confessed to the killing. Huff also opens up about working with Roger Wheeler's son, David, the emotional toll of the investigation, and how their joint efforts finally exposed the truth. His book Killing My Father reveals even more about this decades-long fight for justice. Subscribe to get gangster stories weekly. Transcript [0:00] Well, hey, all you wiretappers, good to be back here in the studio of Gangland Wire. I have another former cop, a retired copper from not too far away from Tulsa, Oklahoma, and he has a heck of a story. He's written a book about it, but it's a heck of a story. Down in Tulsa, Oklahoma, they've got a mob murderer. Well, now, mob murders don't just go down every day in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and it's a really interesting story that ties clear back to to the highlight business down in florida to the winter hill gang in uh boston massachusetts uh to whitey bulger really and and a hit man named john moderano and to a one of the infamous corrupt fbi agents out of boston you know they seem to have had a problem in the boston fbi for a period of years there and a couple three of their guys end up going to jail uh over probably being a little bit overly uh that they forgot where the line was it looks to me like but anyhow it was uh it's a retired detective mike huff welcome mike, Well, hey, welcome to U2. Thank you for doing this. All right, Mike. Now, tell us a little bit about your career. You know, how did you come up through the ranks in Tulsa PD? Well, I started in January of 1975. [1:20] I got promoted to a detective in 1980. I didn't much like it. It wasn't enough action. I had a good career on the street. But I like my supervisor a lot. So I stuck with this being a detective. [1:39] In May of 81, May 27th, you know, I just got to work. I was checking on a guy that I had shot three weeks earlier who was in intensive care. We're just sitting there and we're talking about we're going to eat supper. And I was on the phone with the hospital. Checking on this guy's condition, and police radio came on and said, we need all the homicide detectives to head out to Southern Hills Country Club on a shooting. I guess 5-0s that night, you know, we hit it out there, and, you know, Southern Hills, even at that time, before a lot of all the major golf tournaments they've since had, was a very, well, it was the kind of place that I wasn't familiar with. [2:34] Everybody with money was part of that country club, and I wasn't one of that crowd. There's a middle-aged man swamped over in a seated car. He'd been shot between the eyes. It was a little bit foreign to me. You know, I'd been a homicide detective for a year and had been to a good bunch of homicid...
In Part 2 of this week's episode of Next on the Tee, I'm joined by someone quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite guests—Bill Mallon. Bill's remarkable journey through golf, medicine, and the story of tickets to the 1980 Winter Olympics that he gave to his father, is one you won't want to miss. A former standout amateur and 2x All-American at Duke, Bill captured 43 amateur titles, including the Massachusetts and New England Amateurs twice each. He played on the PGA Tour from 1975 to 1979 and teed it up in the 1977 U.S. Open at Southern Hills—an event made unforgettable by winner Hubert Green playing through death threats, a moment Bill experienced firsthand. After his time on Tour, Bill returned to Duke for medical school and went on to become one of the country's top orthopedic surgeons. He also shares an unforgettable story about the time he and Gary McCord set the PGA Tour record for the fastest round ever played—finishing in just 1 hour and 26 minutes at Harbour Town in 1977, a developing story that caught the attention of TV cameras and eventually Commissioner Deane Beman. We also dive into Bill's passion as an Olympic historian, including a powerful and emotional story about gifting his father tickets to the 1980 Winter Olympics to see speed skating legend Eric Heiden—a moment that would become part of his father's final words years later. This is an episode filled with incredible stories, heartfelt moments, and the kind of perspective only someone like Bill Mallon can bring.

For the past three weeks, we have explored the evolution of the local church from the time of the Book of Acts to the present day. Despite the changes over the last 2,000 years, the mission has remained consistent. In the next three weeks, we will shift our focus to the global church, examining how its mission has also stayed the same because Jesus' plan has always been to send out His disciples to grow and expand Christianity. Here at Southern Hills, we are committed to this mission. As Pastor Josh explains in today's message, "We are not building a holding tank; we are building a launching pad." Discover what this means in the first week of our sermon series, Kingdom Co-op.
Today, we embark on a new sermon series titled "The Church." In this first week, we tackle the question, "Why the church?" This inquiry will lead us to explore related questions: Why did Jesus establish the church? Why does He care for it? What was the early church like? What lessons can we draw from it?To address the central question, "Why the Church?" we will focus on three key points: the church gathered, the church gave, and the church grew. These elements were evident in the early church and remain relevant today at Southern Hills. Over the past 2,000 years, these principles have continued to resonate, as seen in the countless testimonies of our members who have experienced and embraced the practices of the early church. As we strive for the church to gather, give, and grow, we must ask ourselves a critical question: have we become more comfortable singing about the mission than living it out? What steps can we take to change that?
DMay and JDub are back from their Oklahoma Golf Tour. What was it like to play courses such as Southern Hills and Oak Tree? That and more in this episode of One Groove Low.
In May of 1981, in the parking lot of Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a man named Johnny Martorano killed his 19th victim. His target was the millionaire businessman Roger Wheeler, owner of a company called Telex that employed 5,000 people in Tulsa alone. Wheeler had been successful his whole life, but when he delved into a mob-connected business, he didn't realize in time that the men he became involved with were more dangerous than the average business rival. A network of corrupt FBI agents and the infamous Winter Hill Gang, including their leader Whitey Bulger, got nervous when Wheeler asked too many questions, and set in motion a crime whose effects are still felt today—and it all happened on one of the most renowned golf courses in America.

In “The Lost Coin,” we're shown that, we are valuable in God's eyes.
This episode of the Year in Review begins with the newly-crowned Husky Boy Ranch at the Byron Nelson before moving to the second men's major of the year at Southern Hills. It was there that the “pampered fcks” got worked up about sand, Tiger hobbled along, and a relatively flat major came to life in the final hour. Also included in this segment is the release of the first “LIV List,” Bryson finding “the Lord,” and some amusing leaks about plans for the first draft party. This is the usual SGS approach to the year in review, focusing more on the amusing, inane, and extraordinary and it will continue to roll out over the next couple weeks in multiple parts to be enjoyed at your convenience during the holiday season.
Anticipation for men's major championship golf this year was sky-high. Tiger was returning to the Masters, the PGA Championship had been moved to Gil Hanse-restored Southern Hills, the U.S. Open was visiting the Country Club for the first time since 1988, and St. Andrews was hosting the 150th edition of the Open. To the delight of golf fans everywhere, the tournaments lived up to the hype. Andy Johnson welcomes Geoff Shackelford (@geoffshac), author of The Quadrilateral, a Substack newsletter dedicated to golf's majors, to relive the four biggest weeks in golf, reminisce on early- and late-round memories, and give their rankings of each major.
Justin Thomas returns to the pod for a full debrief on his win at Southern Hills, the evolution of his shot-making on course and the growth of his relationship with Bones. We also get the latest from JT on his views on the LIV tour, changes to the PGA Tour policies and schedule, and what lies ahead.
Soly sits down with Jim Wagner on the front half of the pod to recap the PGA Championship from Jim's perspective on how Southern Hills played last week as a member of Gil Hanse's team that renovated the course. Wagner also provides some great insight on future projects, having some unusual or quirky features to their courses and more. Then in part two we sit down with Gil Hanse for a chat about his work at Colonial ahead of this week's PGA Tour event as well as what we can expect at Brookline for the upcoming US Open.
