For the 50th anniversary of the baroque pop classic, ONE YEAR, Colin Blunstone looks back on the unique circumstances around how his first solo album was made. After the end of The Zombies, a band he formed as a teenager with Rod Argent, Hugh Grundy, Paul Atkinson and Paul Arnold, Blunstone found himself unsure about continuing in the music business. The Zombies had recorded ODESSEY AND ORACLE at Abbey Road Studios in 1967, but the initial singles failed to generate interest so the band called it quits before the album was released. Blunstone began working as an insurance clerk in London when “Time of the Season” unexpectedly started to chart in the United States in 1969. Producer, Mike Hurst, convinced Blunstone to make music again and he released a few singles under the pseudonym, Neil MacArthur. Later, former Zombies bandmates, Rod Argent and Chris White, talked Blunstone into recording a solo album under his own name with the two of them co-producing. From Chris Gunning's breathtaking string arrangements to an unlikely hit of a 21-piece orchestra pop tune to a painfully honest account of his breakup with actress, Caroline Munro, to getting the old Zombies team back together again, we'll hear the stories around how ONE YEAR came together.
The guys welcome Paula Kelley to talk about The Zombies' “Odessey and Oracle.” Plenty of other discussion including how this album is not a “woo” record, The Bee Gees, shoegaze, going back to your roots, the Mindbenders, Faulkner is overrated, Jim just loves people (or he's a whore), 3 score shaming, and that song was a single? Colin Blunstone is the lead singer of the legendary band 'The Zombies' and an acclaimed solo artist in his own right. In this episode, we talk about what it was like recording 'She's Not There' in 1964 at Decca Studios, and what it was like recording 'Odessey And Oracle' in Abbey Road just as The Beatles finished recording 'Sgt. Pepper's...' in 1967. We talk about how he almost quit the music business after Odessey And Oracle flopped (despite it going on to become one of the most celebrated albums of the 60s) and the recording of his incredible debut album 'One Year' in 1970. Joining Gary and Guy in this episode is Zombie and solo artist Colin Blunstone. With a long, illustrious and incredible career, there's much to discuss. From forming The Zombies with school pals, to rapid success with "She's Not There" to an equally quick descent into obscurity, despite the Zombies second album, "Odessey And Oracle" being rated as one of Rolling Stones top 100 albums, and Paul Weller's favourite. For Colin, what followed was a stint in insurance, a brief career under a pseudonym, then a fully-fledged solo career and finally a return to The Zombies who were rewarded with an induction into The Rock 'n Roll Hall Of Fame in 2019. The Zombies called it quits 4 months before their 2nd album was even released. This week, the boys dig into identity theft in the pre-internet age, World War I (again), and just who holds the power in a band. The Zombies were part of the “British invasion” movement of the 1960s and enjoyed some major success for a short period before they broke up after only a few years. But the band's acclaimed 1968 album Odessey and Oracle is considered to be one of the greatest albums ever recorded and hits like “She's Not There,” Tell Her No,” and “Time of the Season” remain all time classics. Rod formed a new band called Argent, which hit big in 1972 with “Hold Your Head Up.” Colin released three solo albums, co-produced by Rod, in the early 1970s. Around 2000, Colin and Rod resurrected The Zombies, ultimately reuniting with the remaining original band members. Their sixth studio album, 2015's Still Got That Hunger, revived public interest in the band and even led to Odessey and Oracle re-entering the Billboard 100 – nearly 50 years after the album's release. In 2017, The Zombies went on an Odessey and Oracle tour, performing for a multi-generational fanbase, and in 2019, they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The title of the Zombies' marvelous album from 1968/69 entitled "Odessey and Oracle" (sic) puts one's life in two-word perspective that means a lot to me. We are all on an odyssey of sorts, as Odysseus/Ulysses was in Homer. There are headwinds, zephyrs, tailwinds; and more to the point, storms, whirlpools and icebergs. No one could really disagree with the picture of our human experience as an odyssey, the forms and circumstances of which are quite hidden to us -- as Thomas Cole's epic visual parable "The Journey of Life" conveys with jaw-dropping perspicacity and prescience -- at the start. And hidden almost all along the way, in fact! So yes, sans doute, life is an odyssey. And we need -- I mean need urgently -- an oracle. Which is to say, we require a Word/words from outside ourselves to orient us and re-orient us. If we think that we ourselves can provide the required wisdom to understand and interpret our misfires, let alone our successes, that conception proves untenable over time. We need an oracle. Very recently I ran into an oracle -- a person, I mean, who stated an astonishing conviction concerning a current event, and whom I trust. In other words, I trust this person as a kind of oracle to interpret the present in the light of God's overriding Purpose. I was struck quite speechless by this preacher's certainty concerning something, shall we say, Very Big. Am still not sure whether I believe her, in fact -- she ministers at a small store-front church in west Orlando. But I take her seriously. The point is, I felt I was being addressed by an oracle. We need not only an interpreting confidence in the Divine Purpose behind our odyssey, but we also need an oracle to navigate us towards "Our Year" (The Zombies, 1968/69), that New Day of God's unfolding -- let alone shattering. LUV U!

Hello Friends, today we're taking a journey to London with The Zombies' outstanding LP 'Odessey and Oracle', recorded at Abbey Road Studios in 1967, and released in 1968. Funded by the band themselves, they only initially delivered a mono mix to CBS, who would then demand that they fund and mix a stereo version of the album. These two mixes will be our focus today, as well as the Stereo Remix of 'This Will be Our Year', only originally issued in mono and artificial stereo in 1968. So, don't get Hung Up on A Dream, it truly is the Time of the Season to break down both these mixes, and truly find out which is better.Happy Listening, Frederick Email the show at: backtomonoradio@gmail.comListen to companion podcast Back to Mono here: backtomono.podbean.comJoin the Facebook Community here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/backtomono

Odessey and Oracle was one of the best albums of the 1960s, and one of the most enduring players to come out of the entire British psychedelic boom, mixing trippy melodies, ornate choruses, and lush Mellotron sounds with a solid hard rock base.

I Am Nasrine is the BAFTA-nominated debut film from Tina Gharavi. It follows teenage refugee Nasrine, forced to leave Iran and start a new life in the UK after a run-in with the police. Tina Gharavi explains how her own life and work with refugees in the north east of England contributed to the script, and how she filmed parts of the footage undercover in Iran. The White Queen is TV adaptation of Philippa Gregory's best-selling novel, The Cousin's War. Set during the War of the Roses, the battle between the Houses of York and Lancaster is seen through the eyes of the women at the heart of the action. Critic Rebecca Nicholson considers the growing appetite for historical drama and how The White Queen, with its underlying themes of magic and fantasy, compares to Game Of Thrones. For the Cultural Exchange, Paul Weller nominates The Zombies' album Odessey And Oracle - released in 1968. For the past twelve years, weavers at the West Dean tapestry studio have been recreating seven sixteenth century tapestries, known as The Hunt For The Unicorn series, for Stirling Castle in Scotland. As the final tapestry is cut from the loom, marking the completion of biggest British weaving project for two hundred years, John Wilson hears about the medieval techniques involved.
For episode 37 of Love That Album, I’m happy to welcome Simon and Brian of the truly excellent Sodajerker on Songwriting podcast (download at www.sodajerker.com) In 1968, The Zombies were in the unfortunate position of not really having achieved the sort of success they deserved. History had been far kinder to many of their contemporaries. They decided they would record one final album (at Abbey Road, no less). It even had the ignominious misspelling of the title on the album cover – Odessey and Oracle. A year after its release, Al Kooper had released the album on CBS in the US and the band had a smash hit with the single “Time Of The Season”. This was ironic for two reasons. The obvious one was the band had split up and there was to be no promotion. The second, more subjective irony was that this song was not typical of the style of the rest of the record. Sodajerker and I discuss the dark themes sung about on this album (war, prison, dying lonely, and that old staple, relationship heartbreak) made more palatable by glorious melodies and harmonies. This album is a bona fide classic that needs to be in every pop lover’s collection. Listen to this episode and have us convince you why.
