Today's guest is a special one. For Earth Day, we couldn't think of a better guest than Hila the Earth, an eco-rapper who embodies Mother Earth when she performs. On this episode, we talk about why she dons Mother Earth for performances, her transition from Hila the Killa to Hila the Earth, the process of creating one of her songs, and creating a new vision for how we support community and care for each other. One of the reoccurring themes in the episode is collaboration. From Hila's dream to collaborate with Robin Wall Kimmerer to writing songs with scientists, Hila the Earth is an amazing example of how unique collaborations can bring mainstream attention to often complex issues facing the future of humans and the living beings we share Planet Earth with. Make sure to check out Hila on Instagram and follow her on your favorite music streaming platform. Finally, I want to give a shout out to the Patagonia Action Works platform. It is a platform created by Patagonia with Catchafire to help skilled people like you connect with environmental non-profits that could use your skills. So if you're a designer, a lawyer, an accountant, a business strategist, a copywriter - literally almost any skill that you apply in your day job, you can use it to help a non-profit doing amazing work. I've completed more than 15 projects over the past few years and they are as rewarding for me as I hope they are for the non-profit. So if you do one thing in recognition with Earth Day, visit the Action Works website and search for a project using your skills. In honor of Hila and my own appreciation of Robin Wall Kimmerer, I'll share this quote from ‘Braiding Sweetgrass' before we get to the episode: “We can starve together or feast together. All flourishing is mutual.” Links Hila the Earth on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/hilatheearth/ Hila the Earth on Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/artist/77NNum4ZBx4kmUF9eanJpS Hila the Earth on Apple Podcasts - https://music.apple.com/gb/artist/hila-the-earth/1682028368 Patagonia Action Works - https://www.patagonia.com/actionworks/home/choose-location/

According to Ruha Benjamin, we're living inside someone else's imagination. An imagination that limits our ability to build a more just, liberated world. So, how do we take back our agency and begin to seed something different? Baratunde talks with Princeton professor and founding director of the Just Data Lab, Ruha Benjamin to find out. SHOW ACTIONS Internally Reflect - Bear witness and create a ripple This one is inspired from Ruha's book Viral Justice: How We Grow the World We Want which says: “…bear witness to the weight of individual and communal protective acts and consider how all of us can be involved in sheltering one another from the rain and sun by cultivating relationships, skills, accountability, and healing.” Think about when you witnessed someone near you perform an act of justice or kindness or protection for another. Was it a big or small act? Did it require courage? How did witnessing that make you feel about the world? Is it something you could repeat and further the impact? Become More Informed - Learn about racial justice Ruha recommends Rest is Resistance: A Manifesto by Tricia Hersey and The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander both of which you can find on our Bookshop page. In this week's episode Tim and Jeremy focus on the early life and work of Bob Marley & The Wailers. They explore the role Marley and the group played in bringing Reggae to the world, with the singer becoming a singular and ubiquitous figure in culture in the process. Beginning with their first Ska singles from the mid-'60s, we hear how the original 1965 recording of One Love articulated a nascent form of philosophical universalism, with love as a political virtue to overcome difference. We also follow Marley on his journey towards Rastafarianism, and reintroduce Island Records' Chris Blackwell to the show. Tim and Jeremy discuss the powerful, dub-inflected production of the Wailers' second album Soul Rebels, consider the anti-imperialism of rootsyness, and explore the recording and marketing of their follow up, Catch A Fire. We'll be back in a fortnight with part two of our deep dive on Marley. One Love. Tim Lawrence and Jeremy Gilbert are authors, academics, DJs and audiophile dance party organisers. They've been friends and collaborators since 1997, teaching together and running parties since 2003. With clubs closed and half their jobs lost to university cuts, they're inevitably launching a podcast. Produced and edited by Matt Huxley. Tune in, Turn on, Get Down! In episode #122 of the Path Podcast, Kelly and I discuss what makes a nonprofit more attractive to funders, and what nonprofit leaders can do to better demonstrate their ability to maximize investments in their communities. Kelly offers specific advice as to what the Robins Foundation looks for when it evaluates prospective nonprofits, and how nonprofit leaders can learn from key conversations that are occurring right now across the national philanthropic landscape.ABOUT KELLYKelly Chopus is the president and Chief Executive Officer of the Robins Foundation in Richmond, Virginia, where she is responsible for the operations, management and grant making for the one of the region's largest family foundations. In the premiere of Season 1: "Catch a Fire" dials things back to 1987 and heads to Washington, D.C., where Henry is a disillusioned justice major at American University. His life changes, however, when he walks into a record shop and eventually secures an internship at RAS Records working for trailblazing reggae producer Dr. Dread, a.k.a Gary Himmelfarb. The job description seems simple enough: sweeping floors, packing boxes, and answering phones. But, Henry soon learns calls to RAS Records are anything but simple. Catch a Fire was the major label debut for Bob Marley and the Wailers, and it was an international success upon its release in 1973. Although Bob Marley may have been the main voice, every member of the Wailers made valuable contributions and they were never more united in their vision and sound.

Contrary to popular belief, print is not dead. There was a time, not long ago, when graphic designers designed almost entirely for print. Sure there were trade show booths and vehicle graphics, but in their way, those are print as well. As the internet became more and more popular, graphic designers started to encroach on a turf that was mostly populated by computer programmers. And before you knew it, a whole new industry was born–Web design. Offering website design allowed graphic designers to help clients on two fronts—both digital design and print design. But as time moved along and the world moved closer to being a "paperless society" (it still hasn't reached what people predicted), more and more designers shifted away from print design to concentrate more on the digital side of the design industry. Nowadays, it's common to find designers who only design websites. And there's nothing wrong with that. But contrary to popular belief, print is not dead. There is still a vast market out there for printed design. In fact, it's become even more critical in today's world. With the popularity of websites, landing pages, social media, online advertising and everything else digital, printed material is still a very viable form of marketing. You can almost say that printed marketing can help a business stand out from its digital competition. Not to mention, print can be a very lucrative part of your design business. Not only are you paid for your design work. But you can also earn a commission on the cost of the print run if you offer print brokering as a service. Sometimes, those print commissions can make you more than what you charge for the design itself. You might charge a client $1,000 to design a brochure and then earn an additional $2,000 commission if the client opts for a large print run. Print can play a good part in rounding out your design business. Here are five reasons why you should offer print design. 1) Print is effective. People are bombarded every day with digital advertising to the point where they become blind to it. If you checked your social media accounts today, you were probably exposed to a minimum of a dozen ads. Can you name a single one of them? Digital ads, although effective, are also considered digital noise by most people and can easily be lost among the other pixels on the screen. Printed material, however, stands out. People trust print. The low cost of digital advertising allows anyone to start with minimal risk. Print, on the other hand, requires more significant thought and more investment. So when someone sees a printed marketing piece, they tend to trust it more than a digital equivalent. Tests run by MarketingSherpa show 82% of people trust print ads over digital ads when it comes to making a purchasing decision. In addition to the trust factor, print regularly outperforms digital when marketing to a local audience. Posters, yard signs, banners, vehicle graphics are great ways to present your message out to a local audience. This is evident during election campaigns. But even outside of elections, print is an excellent way to reach your target audience. A printed brochure captures a person's attention in a way that a website can't. Studies have also proven that it's easier to recall information seen in print form than when viewed digitally. So if you're designing for local clients, why not include print design as part of your services. Your clients will see you as someone who does it all, print and digital. Plus, you could use print to promote your design business and stand out from your competition. 2) Print brings in big profits. As mentioned above, you can make extra money by offering print brokering as a service. But even if you don't, designing for print provides excellent income opportunities for designers. There's a particular belief among the public that most graphic designers offer both print and web services, but web designers don't do print. Don't limit yourself. By offering both print design and website design, you expand your potential client pool and creates an additional revenue stream. Many smaller local businesses continue to use print design as their primary means of marketing. 3) Print allows you to upsell and cross-sell. Offering both web and print allows you to upsell and cross-sell your services to your clients. This is especially useful when combined with the three-tier pricing strategy. This strategy involves presenting three prices to your clients. Each pricing tier is offering a higher degree of service. Offering print design is a great way to supplement your tiers. A client looking for a website may choose a higher-priced package that includes a flyer and business card design. Or a client looking for a brochure may be willing to pay extra if you package the brochure with a landing page. Upselling and cross-selling offer more options to your clients and extra income for you. 4) Designing for print is tangible. Graphic design is known as a visual medium. As designers, we create things that are aesthetically pleasing as well as functional. But design is so much more where print is concerned. Different paper stocks or printing methods can convey a meaning on their own. Some papers look and feel cheap, while others give a sense of quality and prestige. Embossing, die-cutting, stamping, special coatings are all part of the print design process, which can increase the perceived value of a marketing piece. The University of Oxford did a study that shows that consumers generally value physical goods more than digital goods. Meaning they are willing to pay more for something they can touch. Designers can use this to their advantage. Designing something that will be physical increases its perceived value allowing you to charge more for it. 5) It takes a different creative mindset to design for print. When designing a website, the page automatically becomes longer to accommodate more content. Digital ads don't require much copy because they link to a landing page with more information. Print, however, requires advanced creative thinking. A piece of paper has fixed dimensions. A designer must be creative in the use of that limited space. What's the best way to include all the necessary information on a poster, a postcard, a billboard? What are the best typefaces to use, and at what size? How will colours interact with each other on paper? How will folding the piece affect the design? When designing for print, you must stretch your creativity and find the best way to create something that not only looks good but serves its purpose, all while conforming to the restrictions imposed by the medium and printing process. Conclusion If you are one of the countless new generations of designers specializing only in digital media, I hope this episode whet your appetite for print design enough to give it a try. As someone who started in print, then moved to the web and now offers both, I can tell you designing for print is quite fulfilling in a creative way. So believe me when I say, print is not dead. Do you offer both print and web design? Let me know by leaving a comment for this episode. #PeterTosh was born to very young parents, who refused to take his responsibility, thus leaving him without the protection and the love of parents that children generally deserve. In absence of his parents, he was raised by his aunt but only literally. One look at Tosh in his earlier days could make anyone believe the fact that he raised himself. He was an extremely resourceful, self-dependent being and fought for a number of causes. He became the voice for those who could not speak or did not have the means to voice their feelings to a worldwide audience. While some hated Tosh, others revered him as the rebellious hero. To many, he was a redeemer; a saint, who was sent to liberate the people of Jamaica, both physically and mentally by way of his music. He was one of the most renowned reggae artists of his time and was the founding member of the band ‘The Wailers’, which gave another important personality and artist, Bob Marley, a head-start in the world of #music. Through all the hardships in #Jamaica, the group came up with their first collaboration, ‘Catch A Fire’. As the core vocalist of the band, Tosh used music as a medium to voice his feelings and opinions. Apart from his career with ‘The #Wailers’, he also had a successful solo career, which was cut short due to his tragic death.
Time to spread the light of love and catch a fire for god, humanity and the universe. The catch a fire movement has officially arrived.

Things moved fast in the music business of 1973. Less than six months after the Wailers released their first international album, Catch A Fire, the Wailers were now moving through the gears with an increasing sense of mission. 'Burnin' is an album full of revolutionary fire and fervour, it was also the last, heroic distillation of a line-up that had taken the teenaged Wailer, Tosh and Marley on a journey from the streets of Trenchtown to the brink of global stardom. Henceforth it would be Marley who was very much the man in charge. Listen back to our London event where we were joined by Don Lett’s who was largely responsible for merging punk rock and reggae in London in the late seventies, as he said himself: “The only white people you would see at a Jah Shaka dance in Dalston would be The Sex Pistols, The Clash… my friends.”

Find Your Dream Job: Insider Tips for Finding Work, Advancing your Career, and Loving Your Job
Many people take breaks during their career. People take breaks for childcare, elder care, travel, health, and more. When you’re ready to return after a multi-year break from work, it can be hard to make a plan to relaunch your career. The first step is to figure out what you want, according to career expert Carol Fishman Cohen. “From there,” she says, “everything else flows.” In this episode, Carol shares her personal experience with relaunching her career, and gives advice for job seekers who need a plan to reenter the workforce. One great tactic is to use strategic volunteering to beef up your recent experience. Carol shared a few resources to find opportunities, including Idealist and Catchafire. Our Guest for This Episode: Carol Fishman Cohen Carol Fishman Cohen is the CEO and co-founder of iRelaunch, a pioneering company in the career reentry space. This week's interview is unique because there is a BONUS Podcast with key take-away's from my conversation with Haley Samuelson of Catchafire! There are two main areas I wanted to hit on from our conversation. The areas to focus on are intrapreneurship and 'answering-the-nag'. Both of these topics have surface more and more throughout the journey of my social venture and the stories of entrepreneurs I've been privileged to connect with and interview. The messages within each of these are too important to keep to myself, I hope you find the meanings helpful in your own social good journey! Intrapreneurship:
We are back with part 2 of this week's interview with Hayley Samuelson of Catchafire! In this segment we dig into the purpose of serving on or with a social good mission. Catchafire is a social enterprise that pairs experienced professionals with nonprofits and social enterprises who need assistance. In this audio interview, CEO and founder Rachael Chong speaks with Stanford Center for Social Innovation correspondent Ashkon Jafari about how Catchafire started and how the organization conducts outreach. Much of today's reggae music has turned something so pure and beautiful, into a commercialized parody of itself. Jahmings Maccow is taking reggae music back to its roots by focusing on its foundation, storytelling. Stories about life, love, and the social ills of the world, backed by soulful music, seep into your eardrums and touch your heart and soul. Jahmings rose from the quiet island of Anguilla, to the rough ghettos of South Bronx and was influenced from infancy by music coming from the Mississippi Delta and the Caribbean. He rose to become one of New York City's toughest reggae acts during the 80's, with bands like Catch-A-Fire and The Enforcers. In the early 90's, he moved to Los Angeles and has branched out to become more of a rhythm & blues, rock

THIS MIX FEATURES REGGAE’S VOCAL HARMONY GROUPS FROM THE 60S, 70S, AND 80S.I took it back to the roots on this one. I focused on songs with an impressive vocal arrangement. This is a specific selection of songs with male singers harmonizing together.I featured The Wailers, mostly from the “Catch A Fire” album. That album has that very dry, grassroots sound. This was before instrumentation such as horn sections and electric guitars were added. Before the female energy of the I-Threes was added. The mix also featured some of The Heptones‘ Studio One era hits. I dropped in some original Israel Vibration before they split. Other groups featured are The Techniques, The Abyssinians, The Gladiators, The Sensations, The Mighty Diamonds, and The Silvertones. You also hear songs from Lloyd Parks and We the People, The Sharks, The Royals, The Cables, and The Flames.Listen to those names and you know these brothers were from a different time. These vocal groups created some of the most beautiful music and the most powerful songs. You feel their passion because of the emphasis conveyed within the harmonies. There was something special about those days. Its the sweet soulful sound of great reggae music! If you enjoy this, check out episode 74. It’s entitled “The Greatest Reggae Bands of All Time (not including the Wailers).” That show features Aswad, Steel Pulse, Third World, Israel Vibration, Black Uhuru, and Inner Circle. Similar material is on The Studio One tribute episodes: 55 and 56.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/reggae-lover/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast?
