After being closed for renovations since 2020, the historic Old Courthouse in downtown St. Louis will reopen to the public on Saturday. It's the final phase of a $380 million decade-long project to enhance the Gateway Arch National Park grounds. The Old Courthouse is famous as the site where Dred and Harriet Scott sued for their freedom in the mid-1800s, a case that ultimately reached the U.S. Supreme Court where slavery was upheld. Jeremy Sweat, superintendent of the Gateway Arch National Park, and Ryan McClure, executive director of the Gateway Arch Park Foundation, join the show — in addition to Lynne Jackson, the great-great-granddaughter of Dred and Harriet Scott, and artist Cbabi Bayoc.

“Our word isn't racism. It's relationship.” Those are the words of Lynne Jackson, the great great grand-daughter of Dred Scott. Lynne joins the Gloria Purvis Podcast to discuss the Dred Scott decision and its ripple effects today.  In 1852, Dred sued the state of Missouri for his freedom, invoking the law “once free always free” after living in the free state of Illinois. Ultimately, his case was denied by Chief Justice Roger Taney, who ruled by the changing political tide and pervading racism of the time. Lynne Jackson founded the Dred Scott Heritage Foundation to commemorate her ancestor's story, to continue education around racial justice, and to reconcile the descendants of formerly enslaved people with the descendants of slave-owners.   Jackson herself was able to meet the descendants of Roger Taney. And together they have spoken before colleges and legislatures, testifying to the impact of Scott's historical case as it altered the course of U.S. history and continues to ring through the generations.  “I was just grateful that we had come to a point in our country where we could have of these two families speak together and know each other and respect each other,” says Jaconson, “And have a moment where we could say we aren't our ancestors and we want to see a better day for all of our children in our country.” In addition to modeling racial reconciliation between families today, The Dred Scott Heritage Foundation raised $250,000 to commission the only statue of Dred Scott and his wife Harriet, which stand outside the Old Courthouse in St. Louis, Missouri.    There still is no postage stamp for Dred Scott. The Foundation started a Dred Scott Stamp Campaign to solicit required petitions and you can help by going to their website, www.dredscottlives.org and checking out the campaign.   Lynne Jackson is available for speaking engagements and can be reached through the website at info@thedredscottfoundation.org or 314-532-5613. The town of Sylva has seen its share of vigils and marches following the death of George Floyd. The most recent over the weekend focused on the Confederate monument that overlooks downtown. Traffic backed up along the detour route Saturday as two separate demonstrations set up - one seeking the removal of the statue of a Confederate soldier on the old Jackson County Courthouse steps, and the other wanting it to stay. Demonstrators who want the statue, known as "Sylva Sam," to keep its perch met in a parking lot behind the Old Courthouse. That's as close to the monument as the group could get. Orange cones and barriers blocked off the steps. "Thank you everybody that is here!" That's Frank Huguelet, a former pro-wrestler who says he's a sixth generation Jackson County resident. "If you have an ancestor that is represented by our statue here please raise your hand," asks Huguelet. Almost everyone in the crowd of about 100 people raised their hands. "See that's why we're here folks. This

We're going nowhere this week as we discuss an airline which has stopped flying, a candidate withdrawing from an election, a defender scoring goals and sewage that isn't going where people want it to. Plus we look back to 1940 when a ship ran aground at Maughold and a piano was required to help the war effort. And Katie brings us the history of the Old Courthouse.

When Artists address environmental issues, people see/hear them in new ways. Art may fire us into action, more than mere info ever can.      Jenny Kettler co-curated and has pieces in a group gallery show, Plastic Nation - The Trashing of America, on view through April 7 at Stone Spiral Gallery in Maplewood, MO. Photographs, multi-media works, ceramics and prints navigate the plastic tide we are awash in, with the message that we can reduce our use of this polluting stuff. This show opened March 10; a Closing Reception on April 7 from 2-4 pm will feature Artist Talks at 2:30 pm. Dale Dufer is bringing "suit" against one of our region's most destructive yet popular invasive plants. The Trial of Bush Honeysuckle comes to the historic Old Courthouse in downtown St. Louis on Wednesday, April 4 at 1 pm. With a real Judge, real Environmental Lawyers and Expert Witnesses, this educational trial seeks justice for damages to the Biodiversity of our Native Plants.  Man vs Bush should be a landmark case, whatever the outcome. Open to the public. These Artists want us to look deeply into problems we have created on our planet - with a sense of humor to encourage us toward turnarounds.
