Send us a textSinger-songwriter Will Wesley joins us for a heartfelt conversation that sheds light on the emotional journey behind his latest single, "12 O'Clock in Texas." Through a poignant personal story, Will opens up about his late brother Daniel's influence on his life and music, revealing how his loss became a powerful source of inspiration. Our discussion is an exploration of grief, healing, and the transformative power of music, as Will shares how a mysterious gust of wind led him to pen the song's first draft, channeling his emotions into a piece that resonates with listeners on a deep level. The episode also delves into the nuts and bolts of music production and collaboration, as Will recounts the journey with producer Phil Chandler and audio engineer Tyler Hansen. Capturing the essence of the song meant recording on the road, adapting to unexpected challenges like rain during filming, and bringing together talented musicians to craft a unique sound. The artistic choices and teamwork involved in creating "12 O'Clock in Texas" are a testament to the dedication and passion that go into producing an emotionally charged track.Completing the artistic vision was the creation of the music video, where I had the pleasure of collaborating with director Jordan. Together, we blended visual storytelling with the music's emotional depth, highlighting the role of creativity in enhancing a song's narrative. From location scouting to manipulating film speed for added emotional tones, the video was a labor of love that underscores the importance of collaboration in bringing a project to life. Join us for this inspiring episode as we celebrate the union of personal tragedy and artistic triumph.LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comWill Wesley: https://www.willwesleymusic.com/ Support the show

It's the 2-year anniversary of Rob Hessler handing the podcast over to Tamara Garvey (after having done it for 5 years)! To celebrate, Tamara, Rob, and David Laughlin - who also did the show for a few year with Rob - met up for a looooong wild chat about Savannah's creative scene and the art(s) of interviewing and writing about it.  (One thing we all agree on is the excitement of getting feedback from people who are listening to/reading our interviews HINT HINT!)     Do you want even more of our unhinged thoughts? Check out each of our social media here: https://www.instagram.com/tamgarv/ https://www.instagram.com/work_by_rob_hessler/  https://www.instagram.com/thedavidlaughlin/    Topics in our chat include: Rob insulted his way into a regular writing gig at the Savannah Morning News; the in-and-outs of the current publishing cycle of the SMN; how the nature of the 1-on-1 interview is much easier for (introverted) creatives to talk about their work than at public Artist Talks; how creating each interview episode is an art project in itself; how rewarding it is to interview a burgeoning artist and give them a little boost; particular interviews that have stood out to each of us; the time David recorded a car crash during one of his interviews; the fact that Savannah has been a cultural mecca for years and we are wondering if it has/is peaking (a la Key West), because of housing prices; we each answer a few of David's "studio questions," including a great piece of advice we've each received; Rob talks about a recent article he wrote that has drawn some heat; choosing interview subjects and the necessity of being inspired by each other; "art decorates space and music decorates time;" the shared experience of trying to protect our time and our creative labor when society tries to get these things for free.   Bonus article David found that related to our talk about Savannah! In the latest episode of the Smokey Mirror Podcast, I had the pleasure of sitting down with up-and-coming artist, Mike. The story of how we connected is as serendipitous as it gets. I met Mike at his brother Dave's wedding in St. Louis last weekend. Dave, being my frat brother, meant I had to make the trip to support and celebrate his marriage! During the festivities, another one of my frat brothers mentioned that Dave's brother Mike was not only an artist but a really talented one. Intrigued, I followed Mike on Instagram and planned to check out his music later. Little did I know, I'd get a taste of his talent sooner than expected. At the wedding reception, one of Mike's songs played, and the energy in the room was electric. I knew I had to connect with him. After the song, I went over to him, dapped him up, and invited him to be on my podcast if he was ever in Miami. To my surprise, he told me that he and his girlfriend were actually going to be in Miami that very week! The odds were unbelievable, and we quickly set a date to make the podcast happen. Join us for this episode where Mike shares his journey in music, his inspirations, and what it means to be an artist on the rise. When Marlene Rose https://marlenerose.com/ discovered molten glass, she was energized by the adrenaline rush of the material. While pursuing her BFA, she learned that glass could be used for more than just craft, but as a means to convey an idea of what she wanted to say. Although glassblowing was more common at the time, she was drawn to an ancient technique of sand casting, typically used for metal. Sculpting molten glass in a mold of sand sent her in a direction where everything was new and exciting with no limitations. Please take the ZAPP artist survey. bit.ly/ZAPPArtistSurvey Please help out these amazing members of our community. The things Adeem the Artist hasn't directly experienced, the Knoxville musician has delicately observed in the struggles of strangers and friends in their 34 years, culminating in 11 sung stories of "White Trash Revelry" released on Dec. 2.  Perhaps, you have seen the album on "best-of" lists by Rolling Stone and Billboard or heard their music praised by Brandi Carlile, a queer country artist in her own right − and a Grammy-winning one, at that. Conversations surrounding Southern music and culture are changing, and Adeem the Artist is a newfound flagbearer for that movement. But if you ask them, they're just calling it how they see it.
