People have a deep-rooted tendency to see the natural world as they first experienced it as "normal," without recognizing the many changes, including tragic, fairly recent losses, that were happening before they started paying attention. The illustration for today's podcast was created by John Schoenherr for Sterling North's 1963 book, *Rascal*, a memoir of his experiences as a child while his big brother was fighting in World War I. Schoenherr also illustrated the Caldecott Award-winning *Owl Moon*. Schoenherr gave me permission to use it in my own work, and I thought it worked well to illustrate how abundant nighthawks once were.

Season 4: Episode 3--The UP Notable Book Club presents Ian Schoenherr whose father John Schoenherr (1935 - 2010) illustrated the book "The Big Island: A Story of Isle Royale. The Crystal Falls Community District Library in partnership with the U.P. Publishers & Authors Association (UPPAA) presents author events with winners of the UP Notable Book List.  For more information please visit the links below www.UPPAA.org  www.UPNotable.com  First published in 1968, this engrossing and beautiful picture book about wildlife on Isle Royale is available again thanks to the archivists at the University of Minnesota Press. JOHN SCHOENHERR won the 1988 Caldecott Medal for U.S. children's book illustration, recognizing Owl Moon by Jane Yolen, which recounts the story of the first time a father takes his youngest child on a traditional outing to spot an owl. He was posthumously inducted by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 2015. Schoenherr may be known best as the original illustrator of the dust jacket art of Dune, a 1965 science fiction novel by Frank Herbert that inaugurated a book series and media franchise. He had previously illustrated the serializations of the novel in Analog, an endeavor that secured him a 1965 Hugo Award for Best Professional Artist. Schoenherr was also very well known as a wildlife artist and children's book illustrator, with over forty books to his credit. Most of his black-and-white illustration work used the scratchboard technique, and he was long known as the only commercial artist who specialized in it. His paintings were often egg tempera, another unusual medium. Schoenherr also completed paintings for NASA. Schoenherr's knowledge of zoology was very useful in creating alien creatures. He was a member of the American Society of Mammalogists, the Society of Animal Artists, and the Society of Illustrators. "Julian May's children's book The Big Island: A Story of Isle Royale was originally published in 1968 but the timeless tale continues to educate and inspire young minds today. Isle Royale is considered one of the most remote National Parks and is located off the coast of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, in the waters of Lake Superior. The book tells the story of Isle Royale's most popular four-legged creatures, the moose and the wolves. The Big Island is a classic read for any budding young nature enthusiast and explores the concept of a balanced ecosystem. With an effective blend of local history and a love of nature, Julian May writes about how the moose and wolves came to live on the island. She also tells about how people first came to the island and about the time period that Isle Royale became a National Park. The book delves into the park rangers' various methods of intervention on behalf of the overcrowded and starving moose population. It also tells how the best solution was found when wolves arrived on the island naturally to establish a balanced environment. The Big Island provides readers of all ages some valuable insight into the predator-prey relationship of the moose and wolves of the island and their roles in the great circle of life. Stunningly realistic illustrations of moose, wolves, and other island wildlife cover the pages of this exceptional book"

The ALA Youth Media Awards honor books that have been published in the previous year, so this year's awards ceremony in January 2022 was honoring books that had been published in the year 2021 only. For this episode the RAR team gathered together to talk about the announcements that made us cheer, the familiar faces that we loved seeing win, and ... ...just a few books that we think should have gotten some ALA love.

Science is everywhere. It's in everything we do, everything we see. And yes, everything we read. Books offer a delightful opportunity to talk about science, both through their illustrations and their text. We just need to know a few things to look for and a few questions to ask. Today we'll find out how to think like a scientist, and how to teach our kids to do the same. I invited two professors from St. Michael's College to teach us all about cross-cutting scientific concepts within picture books. Dr. Valerie Bang-Jensen is the Department Chair and Professor of Education at St. Michael's College in Vermont. She's an expert in children's literature and literacy. One of the best companions you could have at a protest, around a campfire or in a song circle is Bruce O'Brien. With his banjo and guitar (and sometimes mandolin or even violin), Bruce is completely in his element holding his ground or under a shining owl moon.

A girl and her father take a moonlit, winter nighttime stroll near the farm where they live to listen and look for owls. Bundled against the frosty air, they trudge through the pristine snow. A wonderful tension builds as the father imitates the great horned owl's call once without answer, then again. Finally, from out of the darkness comes a reply, echoing through the trees! Author Jane Yolen has written more than 200 books. This was lovingly recorded by Skidompha Library's good friend Anna Belknap in January 2016.

OWL MOON --- by John Schoenherr It was late one winter night, long past my bedtime, when Pa and I went owling. There was no wind. The trees stood still as giant statues. And the moon was so bright the sky seemed to shine. Somewhere behind us a train whistle blew, long and low, like a sad, sad song. I coule hear it through the wooden cap Pa had pulled down over my ears. A farm dog answered the train, and then a second dog joined in. They sang out, trains and dogs, for a real long time. And when their voices faded away it was as quiet as a dream. We walked on toward the woods, Pa and I. Our feet crunched over the crisp snow and little gray footprints followed us. Pa made a long shadow, but mine was short and round. I had to run after him every now and then to keep up, and my short, round shadow bumped after me. But I never called out. If you go owling you have to be quiet, that's what Pa always says. ------------------------------ I had been waiting to go owling with Pa for a long, long time. We reacded the line of pine trees, black and pointy against the sky, and Pa held up his hand. I stopped right where I was and waited. He looked up, as if searching the stars as if reading a map up there. The moon made his face into a silver mask. Then he called "Whoo-whoo-who-who-who-whooooooo," the sound of a Great Horned Owl. "Whoo-whoo-who-who-who-whooooooo." Again he called out. And then again. After each call he was silent and for a moment we both listened. But there was no answer. Pa shrugged and I shrugged. I was not disppointed. My brothers all said sometimes there's an owl and sometimes there isn't. We walked on. I could feel the cold, as if someone's icy hand was palm-down on my back. And my nose and the tops of my cheeks felt cold and hot at the same time. But I never said a word. If you go owling you have to be quiet and make your own heat. We went into the woods. The shadows were the blackest things I had ever seen. They stained the white snow. My mouth felt furry, for the scarf over it was wet and warm. I didn't ask what kinds of things hide behind black trees in the middle of the night. When you go owling you have to be brave. Then we came to a clearing in the dark woods. The moon was high above us. It seemed to fit exactly over the center of the chearing and the snow below it was whiter than the milk in a cereal bowl I sighed and Pa held up his hand at the sound. I put my mittens over the scarf over my mouth and listened hard. And then Pa called: "Whoo-whoo-who-who-who-whooooooo. Whoo-whoo-who-who-who-whooooooo." I listened and looked so hard my ears hurt and my eyes got cloudy with the cold. Pa raised his face to call out again, but before he could open his mouth an echo came threading its way through the trees. "Whoo-whoo-who-who-who-whooooooo." Pa almost smiled. Then he called back: "Whoo-whoo-who-who-who-whooooooo," just as if he and the owl were talking about supper or about the woods or the moon or the cold. I took my mitten off the scarf off my mouth, and I almost smiled, too. The owl's call came closer, from high up the trees on the edge of the meadow. Nothing in the meadow moved. All of a shadow, an owl shadow, part of the big tree shadow, lifted off and flew right over us. We watched silently with heat in our mouths, the heat of all those words we had not spoken. The shadow hooted again. Pa turned on his big flashlight and caught the owl just as it was landing on a branch. For one minute, three minutes, maybe even a hundred minutes, we stared at one another. Then the owl Pumped its great wings and lifted off the branch like a shadow without sound. It flew back into the forest. "Time to go home," Pa said to me. I knew then I could talk, I could even laugh out loud. But I was a shadow as we walked home. When you go owling you don't need words or warm or anything but hope. That's what Pa ways. The kind of hope that flies on silent wings under a shining Owl Moon. THE END

Episode 17 On May 3rd 2019 I was contacted about a recent UFO sighting over Springfield, Oregon. The case was less than 2 hrs old and very close by. Join me, in all of it's raw and explicit form, as I interview witness Michael Jerome and Shannon Ortiz. The couple, along with several others around them, witnessed and filmed 3 large balls of light form a triangle shape over the valley and then simply blink out of view. To make matters even more interesting for the 3rd of May, I had earlier that morning been preparing to do some more casework from the Owl Moon Lab. A place I have been studying and interacting with the paranormal since March 2018. This short 5 min. clip on the second part of the podcast documents more suspicious window smudges or "snot rocket" at 7ft up, hair samples in the tree and perhaps grassy/greasy handprints on the backyard fence rail. Never a dull moment.
