With sharp opinions and strong facts on both sides, we debate whether increased taxes on imported goods will truly revive U.S. manufacturing, boost national revenue, or backfire by raising costs across the board.Whether you're for free trade or protecting American jobs, this episode unpacks the real impact of tariffs—without the political fluff. Perfect for anyone interested in economics, politics, or understanding how trade wars affect your wallet.

The rule of law is essential to the flourishing of liberal democracy and capitalism. Yet, it is now under pressure in the United States, and corporate law firms are in the eye of the storm. Over the last few weeks, President Donald Trump has issued executive orders against several prominent law firms that represented his political adversaries and promoted diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Some of these law firms have caved into the administration's demands to end such practices and provide pro bono services to the government, whereas others are fighting back.To discuss the financial reasons why some firms have capitulated while others have held out, and what the consequences are for the survival of the rule of law, Bethany and Luigi speak to John Morley, Augustus E. Lines Professor of Law at Yale University and an expert on the economics of law. Are Trump's orders unconstitutional, and if so, why have so many law firms reached a deal with him? How have changes to law firms' business models left them particularly vulnerable to a moment like this? Why are some firms more vulnerable to political attacks than others? Together, the three discuss the firms' reciprocal agreements with the administration, the possibilities for a collective-action response, and how this moment may profoundly reshape the future of law, democracy, and capitalism in America.Show Notes:Watch a recording of the panel “Antitrust and the 1st Amendment” from the 2025 Stigler Center Antitrust and Competition Conference, featuring Greg Day, Eleanor Fox, and Matt Stoller, and moderated by Maciej Bernatt. The panel highlights how antitrust may stand in the way of collective action, competitive markets, and free speech.

Europe and the US are increasingly having differing approaches to everything from free trade to free speech to combatting disinformation to defence to the role of the judiciary. What does that mean for Global Order? Or rather – in our mad mad mad mad world – what does this mean for the extent of Global Disorder? In this episode, hosts Alexandra Hall Hall and Jason Pack are reunited in person in DC. Jason talks of his misadventures on Capitol Hill – and relates anecdotes he has picked up about the DOGE sledgehammer, Republicans bullying Canadians, and the post-apocalyptic feeling of the place. Jason and Alex anchor the episode around the divergence btw the US and Europe on issues of: Democracy, Misinformation, Corruption and Fraud; National Security/Foreign Policy; and Economy/Tariffs. They delve into the way the political climate ‘feels' in the US under Trump's administration, and the differences in judicial accountability of major political figures between the US and Europe – looking at the Le Pen case in particular. Jason expresses his mad admiration of France and Sweden. Plus: could civil disobedience grow in the US? Are Trump's policies being decided by non-experts who launder Russian misinformation like Laura Loomer – a new Tiktok influencer Rasputin? And can Kier Starmer be bold enough to help us Order the Disorder? And what can Sir Keir learn from Canada's Mark Carney who seems naturally gifted at standing up to Trump. Are Trump's dramatic tariffs simply a negotiation tactic rather than an intentional trade war? Marko Papic, Chief Strategist at BCA Research, joins Maggie Lake for a critical conversation explaining why markets have misunderstood Trump's tariff policy from the beginning and what deeper macroeconomic risks investors should actually be focused on. Key Topics: How Trump has used extreme tariff threats as leverage, and why markets repeatedly fall for it What the rise of a multipolar world means for global markets and U.S. economic power The hidden but urgent risk investors are overlooking: a recession where bond yields stay high, undermining traditional market safety nets Why U.S. market outperformance is coming to an end as fiscal stimulus runs dry, exposing vulnerabilities investors aren't ready for Marko's bold call: why the U.S. dollar is at risk of a 30% decline, and how investors should reposition globally If today's chaotic headlines have you concerned about markets, geopolitics, or the next big risk for your investments, this conversation is essential viewing. 2 April 2025 will go down in history, of that there is no doubt. US President Trump and his team insist this is because it was, as they termed it, “Liberation Day” from the global intertwined trade system, in which the US imposed shockingly high tariffs on all its trading partners, excluding Russia and Belarus. Nearly every other state appear to be appalled by this move — because it will harm each of them and their people and they find it incredible that the US, the leader of the free world and the global trading system for the past eight decades, appears to be the one destroying it.The immediate effects of the tariff decision have quickly become obvious: global markets plunged, but especially those in the US; all states and regions are contemplating reactions, and retaliations. And above all, the credibility of the US has taken a big hit. Indeed, if there is a title to the Trump playbook it seems to be "How to Disrupt the World While Undermining Yourself, Potentially Strengthening Your Opponents and Alienating Your Allies."To discuss the tariffs, the playbook, the effects and the state of the global economy, Ilana Bet-El is joined by Rebecca Christie, Senior Fellow at Bruegel and Lauren Gloudeman, Director of the China programme at Eurasia Group. In a searching conversation, they clarify much about the tariff shock, the options open to the EU and China, the effects in the US, and potentials for the future.Recorded on 3 April 2025ChaptersA new global trade world launched by Trump? How US tarrifs impact China, EU and global markets? Are Trump' tariffs a strategy or a gamble?China's and Europe's responses to TrumpWhat next for global trade?MentionsEurasia & BruegelThe Sound of Economics - last episode“Tariffs and trade wars”“Did tariffs contribute to the Great Depression?"NPR , 1930s tariff war Trump calculationsFollowLauren Gloudeman Eurasia group pageRebecca Christie X/Twitter, BlueskyInstagramELNCreditsFlorence FerrandoMusic: Let Good Times Roll, RA from #Uppbeat Hosted on Acast. In President Donald Trump's recent joint address to Congress, he said, "To unshackle our economy, I have directed that for every one new regulation, ten old regulations must be eliminated." Elon Musk, whom Trump has assigned to execute this vision, has argued that it is time to get rid of all regulations, or as Musk said, “regulations, basically, should be default gone.”Joining Bethany and Luigi to discuss this intensified commitment to deregulation and laissez-faire capitalism is Sam Peltzman, perhaps the leading living expert on the economics of regulation. Peltzman is the Ralph and Dorothy Keller Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business and director emeritus of the Stigler Center, which sponsors this podcast and is named after his mentor, Nobel-Prize laureate George Stigler. Together, the three of them chart a historical perspective on regulation, from Stigler's ideas of regulatory capture to the unintended consequences of deregulatory efforts over time to today's “chainsaw” approach to gutting federal agencies. To understand the costs and benefits of regulation, they discuss how federal agencies have recently intervened in markets, if the private sector could not have accomplished these interventions more efficiently, and if these interventions did more harm than good. Their case studies include the funding, testing, and rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine, the regulation of cryptocurrencies, the management of the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, and the role of the government in addressing climate change. What do DIY stores, French financial bubbles, and Elon Musk have in common? Kicking off with a detour into The Pope's Children and the perils of being a DIY impostor, we quickly shift gears to the real story: the Trump Dump. As financial markets recoil from the chaos of MAGA economics, we dive into history for a striking parallel: John Law, the 18th-century financial mastermind who convinced France to bet everything on his wild vision of a new economic order. Law promised a dazzling future, just as Musk does today, but his empire of speculation collapsed, taking the French monarchy down with it. What happens when the richest man in the world gets inside the head of a leader hungry for power? Are Trump and Musk unwittingly following the script of Law and the Duke of Orléans? Are we on the brink of a modern-day financial reckoning? With markets tanking, Bitcoin crumbling, and the spectre of stagflation looming, we explore the dangerous dance between speculative hype and economic reality. Will history repeat itself, first as tragedy, then as farce? Buckle up. Join the gang! https://plus.acast.com/s/the-david-mcwilliams-podcast. Hosted on Acast. Has the Federal Reserve gone too far? Many Americans are critical of the Fed's move to raise interest rates sharply, pause for years, and then slowly start implementing rate cuts. The arguably most prominent critic of the Fed? President-Elect Donald Trump, who, shortly after nominating the current Fed chair, Jerome Powell, reversed his opinion on whether Powell was the right person for the job. Now, with Trump coming back to the White House, Powell's job hangs in jeopardy—or does it? Can a President fire the Fed chair? Does the President have the authority to influence how the Fed operates? What would happen if Trump decided to go after Powell and request his resignation? Nick Timiraos, reporter at The Wall Street Journal and Federal Reserve expert, is on to answer these questions. Nick gives us the latest update on rate cuts, where the Fed is headed, how the future of the Fed looks with Trump back in office, and why some politicians champion “Fed Independence,” while others argue that Fed power has overstepped its bounds. Are Trump and Powell more aligned than they think, and is this government drama all talk? We're getting Nick's expert viewpoint on it all. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.politix.fmThis week, Matt and Brian take stock of Donald Trump's late pitch to young male voters, who are significantly more Republican curious than young men were in the Bush and Obama years:* Are young men really drifting in a more conservative direction? Or are they mostly attracted to Trump's teflon libertinism?* Is America swinging back to a pre-Bush norm when partisanship wasn't so stratified by age?* Will these voters turn out? Are they even registered? Then, behind the paywall, Matt and Brian debate the theoretical merits of pandering to young voters with policy appeals. Are Trump's weird promises around vaping and cryptocurrency really the kind of thing that can mobilize voters without partisan commitments or apolitical young people? Does the fact that he fully reversed himself, in exchange for money, to adopt these new positions undermine the appeal at all? And to what extent is the Harris campaign also microtargeting young voters? All that, plus the full Politix archive are available to paid subscribers—just upgrade your subscription and pipe full episodes directly to your favorite podcast app via your own private feed. Further reading:* Brian on the deficiencies of Trump's pandering, young-male voter Hail Mary. * Matt on whether the influx of women into the workforce (and, in parallel, the Democratic Party) help explain new norms around sensitivity (or young men's new openness to MAGA). * Jessica Valenti on how Kamala Harris doesn't just defend abortion but has started to normalize it.* The Harvard Institute of Politics fall youth poll.
Former President Trump faces the third day of his hush money payment trial in a Manhattan courthouse. The day kicked off with seven confirmed jurors, but two were dismissed later in the morning. Are Trump's chances doomed by a rigged jury? New York police intervened to remove anti-Israel protesters from Columbia University's campus in New York City today. Demonstrating students had set up an encampment on a campus lawn, demanding the university divest from companies with ties to Israel. Meanwhile, Columbia University president Minouche Shafik testified on Capitol Hill regarding anti-Semitism on the campus yesterday. Speaker Mike Johnson has stirred controversy by pushing a bill without a deal, strategy, or path forward for our country's border security. The bill proposes sending nearly 100 billion taxpayer dollars to Ukraine and Israel, leaving many questioning his priorities. Molly Ringwald, famous for her roles in iconic 80s films like "Pretty in Pink" and "Sixteen Candles," discussed the need for a more diverse cast in modern-era remakes during a Q&A session with Variety magazine at the Miami Film Festival.
