This time Ned and Laura go behind the walls of Pentonville Prison for this very special episode. Listeners may remember Stef Jones, founder of XO Bikes, who trains ex-offenders in cycle maintenance in south London to help them turn their lives around. With UK prisons full to bursting, people like Stef, along with prison staff themselves, try to break the cycle of reoffending that sees an estimated 55% of those released going on to re-offend. That figure is halved if someone has a job to go to – but it's not an easy journey. Pentonville Prison houses those on remand, often awaiting sentencing decisions or hearings. A rehabilitation programme is challenging in this transitory population, but the team behind XO Bikes, including ex-prison officer, Paul, have defied expectations and are working with people as they return to regular life, to try to give them a fresh start.  Ned and Laura meet a prisoner working towards a brighter future, and talk with the XO team about the power of bikes to give people a second chance in life. It's an experience Ned and Laura won't forget, and they hope you won't either.Find out more about XO Bikes here: https://xobikes.com/By the way, if you want ad-free listening, behind-the-scenes and bonus content and to help support the podcast - head to (https://www.patreon.com/StreetsAheadPodcast). When Roger Casement was hanged in Pentonville Prison in 1916, he died an Irish hero and a traitor to the British Empire. On Banna Strand in 2016, President Higgins described Casement as “not just a great Irish patriot, he was also one of the great humanitarians of the early 20th century”.On Free State today, Joe and Dion look at the many lives of a man who so impressed a tribe of cannibals with his courage that they didn't eat him. Casement's lives were varied, and some of them were secret, but he also, as President Higgins said, exposed “the darkness that lay at the heart of European imperialism”. His biographer Roland Philipps joins Joe and Dion to talk about this modern story. A story of a man who exposed the rotten heart of empire. It was a life that changed Ireland and the world. Nobody will ever live a life like Roger Casement's again.Free State with Joe Brolly and Dion Fanning is a Gold Hat Production in association with SwanMcG.For more on Free State: https://freestatepodcast.com/To get in touch with the podcast: info@freestatepodcast.com Hosted on Acast. -- By Oscar Wilde -- Oscar Wilde lived a bright burning, short life. He was born in 1854 and passed away in the new century on November 30, 1900. During his 30's he had success in a number of avenues of writing including poetry, short stories, and novels. However, he is most well known for his stage plays, most prevalently The Importance of Being Earnest. Almost all of Oscar Wilde's stage plays are considered comedies satirizing the Victorian Era. Oscar Wilde had a salacious life and was wrapped up in two lawsuits, alleging sexual impropriety, that ultimately led to his exile, a deep depression, and his untimely death. In both trials he was accused of homosexuality and convicted as such. The final years of Oscar Wilde's life were spent in exile after release from Pentonville Prison in North London in 1897. In October of 1900 Wilde fell ill and ultimately succumbed to meningitis on November 30, 1900. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/patrick-fennell6/support

At the height of his career, today's subject was a national hero in the UK, knighted by George V. His life ended as a traitor and a pervert, executed by hanging in Pentonville Prison before being thrown in an unmarked grave in the prison yard, his body covered in quicklime. His name was Roger Casement, and we'll talk about his rise and fall, Britain’s hypocritical relationship with imperialism and colonialism, and secret black diaries full of "gentle thrusts" and "splendid erections."  Visit our website for T-shirts, an episode archive, and more information about the show. ----more---- SOURCES: Achebe, Chinua. Genevieve Taylor sets out to meet a few of this year's BBC Food and Farming Awards finalists, and hear how learning about food has changed their lives for the better. The first stop is Liberty Kitchen - a finalist in the Best Street Food or Takeaway category. This social enterprise operates at Pentonville Prison, where inmates produce a diverse range of 'street balls', including classic Italian meatballs, macaroni cheese balls and veggies balls; these are then sold at London street food markets. Genevieve visits the bustling prison kitchen with founder Janet Boston, before checking out the Liberty Kitchen stall at Leather Lane market in Clerkenwell - and hears overwhelming praise from current and ex-inmates involved in the scheme, who say it's giving them hope of employment post-prison. Next up, Genevieve checks in with Food and Farming Awards judges for the Cook of the Year category: Jeanette Orrey, co-founder of the educational initiative Food For Life, and Paula McIntyre, a cook, food writer and lecturer. They've been to the Moray region of Scotland, to visit finalist Logie Primary: a rural school with just 28 pupils. Although it's small, this primary school’s making a mark with a food-focused social enterprise that’s teaching pupils food and kitchen skills, and at the same time bringing together the local community. The school's older pupils launched the Cup of Joy Community Cafe two years ago, using vegetables grown in their school allotment and eggs from the school chickens; today, it's not only teaching them valuable nutrition and life skills but providing a hub for this rural community. Our final stop is London, where the judges for this years’ Pat Llewellyn New Talent Award - Ben Adler, whose late wife Pat inspired the award; and Barney Desmazery, food editor at large for BBC Good Food magazine - have been to Ealing to join the team behind Fat Macy’s supper club: a dining experience with a difference… The kitchen and front-of-house team are all homeless people currently living in hostels. The founder Meg Doherty launched the project three years ago, as a way to give people in temporary accommodation an opportunity to learn new skills, while earning enough money to get them back into the housing system. In 1999, Jonathan Aitken was sentenced to 18 months for perjury and perverting the course of justice. He went on to spend seven months behind bars, in three different prisons. At the time, Alan Rusbridger was his adversary. Then editor of The Guardian newspaper, Alan had reported Jonathan to the police for perjury after a high profile libel trial. Twenty years on, Alan sits down with Jonathan, now a chaplain at Pentonville Prison, to find out what he learned from life behind bars, how the experience of incarceration changed the way he thought, and how it continues to shape his life today. This week's guess is investigative journalist Mark Watts! Topics covered by Ava, Sam and Mark include:The freedom of information act which Tony Blair said was his "biggest mistake", Britain's culture of secrecy and the Official Secrets Act + billionaire registered sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein and the difference between FOI in UK and USA. Our usual #HereandFabulous and #GetintheBin segment features too! Mark Watts is a journalist who has worked for a range of national newspapers and broadcasters and is the co-ordinator of the FOIA [pronounced similar to “foyer”] Centre, a specialist research company: www.foiacentre.com. The FOIA Centre uses open-access laws, including the Freedom of Information Act and Data Protection Act, to help unearth stories for the media and uncover evidence for campaigners or legal cases. Mark was the editor of Exaro, the investigative website, for five years. Exaro closed in 2016 because of financial problems in the group that owned it. The website exposed how senior civil servants were working off-payroll to enable them to avoid tax, sparking a huge Whitehall review and a ban on the practice. Exaro revealed a secret recording in which Rupert Murdoch admitted knowing about bribery at his newspapers for decades, a story that made waves around the world. And Exaro led the way in uncovering evidence of sexual abuse by politicians and other establishment figures, forcing the government to order the overarching inquiry into child sexual abuse. Mark has previously worked for The Sunday Times, the Sunday Telegraph and the Sunday Express as well as World in Action, where he helped to expose Jonathan Aitken, the former defence procurement minister, and has written for just about every national title. Could this be why his ghost still wanders the movie studio that he founded? *** On the night of November 20, 1901, a young North Carolina woman named Nell Cropsey vanished from her family’s home in Elizabeth City. After a frantic search that lasted more than a month, Nell’s body was discovered floating in a nearby river. She had been brutally murdered – but by who? *** On November 23, 1910, American-born homeopathic physician and salesman Hawley Harvey Crippen (usually known simply as Dr. Crippen in crime annals) was hanged at Pentonville Prison in London for the murder of his wife, Cora. But was he really a murderer? *** While the holidays are usually a time of cheer and happiness, the people of Chicago learned of a Christmas-related tragedy on November 22, 1912 when the famed "Christmas Tree Ship" went down in a storm on Lake Michigan. Being in prison was good fun, new, exciting, it was horrible! Through my mind things like ??loser??, ??useless??, ??coward??, ??irresponsible?? came across all the time. The hardest thing for me to fight against was the image I had of myself. I was aware that my mind could take me down I??ve always known that, but there wasn??t any alcohol or drugs; no ??run away??, no nothing? FACE IT! ?? I don??t want to!! ?? There is no escape for you, GO ON! ? and I did it and you know what, once you face your fears, they just vanished and things became less traumatic. This 3 minutes audio is about the first time Marilo (my partner) came to visit me and how things were going inside...
