Then, Lauren sets sail into the enigmatic story of the Carroll A. Deering, a ghost ship that ran aground on Diamond Shoals in 1921 with its crew mysteriously vanished. Was it pirates, mutiny, or an otherworldly force that doomed the vessel to drift alone in the treacherous waters? On this episode of Most Notorious, we examine one of the most infamous true crime cases in North Carolina history. On a cold autumn evening in 1901 a young woman named Nell Cropsey stepped out of her house with her spurned suitor, Jim Wilcox. She was never seen alive again. Wilcox later told police that he had broken up with her, leaving her crying on her porch, and then gone home. Over a month later her body (in pristine condition according to the coroner) was pulled out of the Pasquotank River. My guest, Dr. William Dunstan, grew up in Elizabeth City where Nell's murder took place, and has been interested in this case since he was a boy. He believes that Jim Wilcox was innocent and has his own theory on what might have happened to her - and it includes a fascinating family connection. He is the author of "Nell Cropsey and Jim Wilcox: The Chill of Destiny." Purchase Dr. Dunstan's book through Amazon here. This episode is sponsored by Hello Fresh. Content warning: This episode contains suicide ideation and mentions of suicide. It's the turn of the twentieth century in North Carolina and Nell Cropsey has gone missing. All fingers point to Jim Wilcox, her ex-boyfriend who was the last person to see her alive. But the story isn't that simple: there are fake letters, strange sightings, and too many rumors to count. On the night of November 20, 1921, 19-year-old Nell Cropsey followed her boyfriend, Jim Wilcox, out into the hall of her family's house. It was late fall in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, with the Pasquotank river flowing close by. The young couple had spent the evening with Nell's family sitting around the fire in the dining room, with her excited for her upcoming trip to New York and him checking his watch repeatedly the whole evening long. He had asked her to come outside and talk for a moment. No one knows for sure what happened during their conversation, but we do know that Nell's family never saw her alive again. 37 days later, her body was found floating in the Pasquotank river by her house. In this episode, we discuss Nell's disappearance, the subsequent trials, and what may have happened to her.But first, Zoey is here with her Something Spooky: the Mari Lwyd.Content warnings: suicide and domestic violence.Sources: http://www.hauntedhospitality.wordpress.com/2022/12/27/ep-91-the-disappearance-and-death-of-nell-cropsey/Visit us on Social Media! Could this be why his ghost still wanders the movie studio that he founded? *** On the night of November 20, 1901, a young North Carolina woman named Nell Cropsey vanished from her family's home in Elizabeth City. After a frantic search that lasted more than a month, Nell's body was discovered floating in a nearby river. She had been brutally murdered – but by who? *** On November 23, 1910, American-born homeopathic physician and salesman Hawley Harvey Crippen (usually known simply as Dr. Crippen in crime annals) was hanged at Pentonville Prison in London for the murder of his wife, Cora. But was he really a murderer? *** While the holidays are usually a time of cheer and happiness, the people of Chicago learned of a Christmas-related tragedy on November 22, 1912 when the famed "Christmas Tree Ship" went down in a storm on Lake Michigan. The tragedy changed the face of the holidays for the people of Chicago in a very unexpected way. ***Plus the original short horror story “Black Friday” by horror master, Jason R. Jim Wilcox was accused of murdering Nell Cropsey, but the evidence against him was weak and circumstantial. As Jim Wilcox sat in a jail in the town of Elizabeth City, Nell's body was released to her family. Over 200 family members awaited her arrival at the Van Pelt Manor in Brooklyn. Deep blank with heavy white curtains, the hearse traveled across the north river to the Pennsylvania Terminal. Once the hearse was at the terminal, it would await the arrival of the Southern Express to take Nell to her final resting place. Back home, back with her family. Visit us online here. Nell Cropsey was missing, and fingers were quickly pointed at Jim Wilcox. He was the last person to see her, so it would make sense. But things are never that clear-cut. The following day, Jim appeared in front of the Mayor, but with no solid evidence. Jim was free to go, but with a catch, he was required to see the Mayor every day at 12 until told otherwise. There is a house in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Its Queen Anne style Frame sits on Riverside Ave near the Pasquotank river. It stands two stories high, with green and white siding and trim. This house, like so many, holds a dark history. Onlookers of the house claim to see a ghostly figure standing in front of a window of the second story. A young girl, taken before she could truly live life. A girl who has a secret. Her name is Nell Cropsey, and the town still talks about her story to this day. But no-one truly knows what happened to Nell. The best we can do for her is to tell her story. The good, the bad, and the dark. In episode 3, “Jim Wilcox Guilty or Not?” our archivists ponder the aftermath of the trials and the enduring mysteries surrounding the famous case. Epilogue at the 25:00 mark: On Nov. 20, 2019, 118 years since Nell's disappearance, archivists Debbi Blake and Chris Meekins visited the Cropsey home in Elizabeth City, NC to see the related artifacts and visit the graves of some of the major players. Hear their impressions. See the documents referenced in this episode at the State Archives of North Carolina's History For All the People blog.
In episode 2, “Charges and Trials”, archivists Debbi Blake and Chris Meekins outline the indictment and testimony in the trials of James Wilcox for the murder of Nell Cropsey. The first trial took place in March 1902 in Elizabeth City and the second in March 1903 in Hertford in Perquimans County. Both verdicts were appealed to the Supreme Court. The story of young Nell Cropsey is one that has been repeated throughout time. A relationship ends and a woman disappears shortly thereafter. Records maintained by the State Archives illustrate the tragedy as it unfolded in turn-of-the-20th-century Elizabeth City, North Carolina. In episode 1, “Disappearance and Recovery”, our archivists set the stage for the tragedy that unfolds late in the year 1901 when Nell Cropsey disappears from her home. Her sister Olive, Olive's suitor Roy Crawford, and Nell's suitor Jim Wilcox were the last people known to see her alive. Her body was found in the Pasquotank River in front of her home thirty-seven days later.
