The Trump administration, which unilaterally withdrew from the Iran Nuclear Agreement during Donald Trump's first term, claims to be negotiating a new nuclear agreement with Iran. However, 'negotiations' are taking place under an escalation of economic coercive measures, a.k.a. sanctions, and military threats. Bahman Azad, president of the US Peace Council, delves into the hidden intentions of the Trump administration and the changes to Iran's foreign policy under its new president. Azad also explains what is happening in the context of the rise of the multipolar world and the decline of US hegemony, and what we can do in the United States to promote security and peace, as Israel and the US prepare for war. Excerpts from Fasana e Azad by Pt Ratan Nath SarsharNarrator: Raman Kumar SagwalCurator: IrfanWe are thrilled to continue our Read Aloud Collective on Listen with Irfan, featuring a unique narration of the 19th-century Urdu novel Fasana-e-Azad by Ratan Nath Sarshar. This captivating performance is brought to life by Raman Kumar Sagwal, an officer at Income Tax Department from Panipat and a passionate reader of classical Urdu-Persian literature. Raman believes that timeless texts like Fasana-e-Azad are literary treasures, yet sadly, few recordings of such works exist. Fasana-e-Azad (The Adventures of Azad), serialized in Avadh Akhbar from 1878 to 1883 and later published in four volumes by the Nawal Kishore Press, follows the wandering protagonist Azad and his companion Khoji. Their journey takes them from the vibrant streets of late-nineteenth-century Lucknow to the battlefields of the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878) in Constantinople and Russia. We are deeply grateful for narrators like Raman Sagwal, whose proactive and generous contributions enrich our collective. Ruhe in Frieden, Xatar. This week on aBlogtoWatch Weekly, the guys areall in their respective Brady Bunch-like squares, and speaking of square,SpongeBob SquarePants watches are high horology! This segues quite nicely intoAriel's experience as an attorney specializing in contracts and his articleabout what watch brands need from their owners. In his column, According to Ariel, Ariel discusses why buying a watchbrand isn't about extracting profit but rather thinking about the overall valueof the company — and even the future perceived value. Next up, talk turns tothe Hublot Big Bang Unico, which David says looks like it hasthe bubonic plague. Well, alright, then! Another recent release is Vacheron Constantin's 270th-anniversary watch (don't askabout the 275th anniversary, as VC only celebrates the whole numbers). It wasan innocent question, nonetheless, but the team was in lockstep with theanswer. And then the question comes up: Is the Louis Vuitton Tambour catching on? There's talk ofblue-chip luxury, and the guys muse about the future of the Tambour.Semi-regular Azad joins, and they end with our Rick-invented game, Hit, Miss,Maybe! This week onaBlogtoWatchWeekly, the only two usual suspects are Rick and David.Ariel and Ripley are in flight, or fleeing, or otherwise elsewhere. They are, instead, joined by semi-regular, non-suspect Azad and Kevin, and then surpriseguest, Leslie. All of the Euro-men are complaining about the weather ('tis therainy season in the UK, ya know). They get right down to business with adiscussion of the news that Rolex has retired its Carl F. Bucherer brand, andthere are various degrees of lament in the room. Next up, a look at Breitling'srevival of the Gallet brand. The guys muse about how they'll position thesewatches. Then, they discuss Ariel's most recent column in his absence. He asksthe question, "Are Swiss luxury watch brands engaging consumersenough?" The new game, which seems to have taken off, ensues:Judge theCollab. Fun! But where did fan-favoriteHit, Miss, Maybe go?And will it ever return?

Our guests include Anthony Davis, a security analyst with extensive experience in conflict zones such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Philippines; Azad, an internationalist from the United States who spent nearly a year working with resistance groups in Chin State and has prior experience in northeastern Syria; and Marc LeQuieu, a field strategist with broad expertise across Africa and Asia, who has provided tactical and logistical guidance to Myanmar's resistance since the early days of the conflict. They discuss the grassroots origins of the resistance, born from peaceful protests and evolving into armed defiance against the junta. This transformation brought early struggles with mistrust between ethnic armed organizations and newly formed People's Defense Forces, stemming from decades of ethnic tension. Despite these divisions, the resistance grows stronger through strategic adaptation and grassroots unity. The panelists then highlights the significant obstacles Myanmar's revolution faces, including a lack of external support from neighboring countries and global powers, forcing the movement to rely on domestic efforts. They examine the logistical challenges of sustaining the fight, from resource shortages to the high cost of essential equipment like ammunition. Yet, technological advancements, such as encrypted communication and drones, have bolstered resistance capabilities, showcasing innovation in the face of adversity. Ethnic divides remain a critical issue, complicating unity among resistance groups. Some progress has been made through alliances in regions like Chin State, yet mistrust and competing interests still hinder broader cohesion.Beyond strategy, the panel delves into the profound humanitarian crisis. Millions of civilians endure displacement and deprivation, placing immense strain on the resistance. Yet despite these challenges, Myanmar's revolutionary spirit remains unbroken. The panelists stress the need for trust-building, improved coordination, and a vision for federalism to sustain the movement and shape a post-conflict Myanmar. Ultimately, the revolution is fueled by resilience, innovation, and a steadfast commitment to liberation in the face of overwhelming odds.

Episode #296: Azad, an American fighter who is supporting the resistance against the military, returns to the podcast to discuss the current situation in Chin State, and the Chin people's struggle for liberation. Long isolated and neglected, this region is now at the center of a determined battle against Myanmar's military junta. The difficult terrain hinders typical military tactics, resulting in the junta's reliance on air superiority; it also makes the supply chain a challenge, causing the military to engage in coercion for local resources. Despite being outgunned, the resistance remains committed to challenging the military's presence, highlighting the resilience of the Chin people. Azad notes how local, armed groups will sometimes strategically choose to not overrun junta bases even when it is possible, in order to prevent heavy, retaliatory aerial bombardments, which mainly just affect civilians.Azad talks about how low morale is a real issue among junta troops stationed in Chin. They often lack the will to fight, but they face severe consequences if they are caught trying to defect. Despite this, the resistance has seen some success with encouraging defections.Even as the advantage begins to tilt away from the military, Azad discusses the importance of coordination and unity among different resistance groups and the need for unity both to effectively fight the junta now, but also in post-liberation governance. He emphasizes the necessity of building a cohesive and unified governing structure. Azad speaks about the Anti-Fascist Internationalist Front and its volunteers who have joined the fight in Burma, drawing parallels to historical internationalist efforts, and stressing the importance of solidarity."When people come together and they want to fight for their own freedom, for their own autonomy, for their own self-determination, can they do it?" Azad asks rhetorically. "The answer is absolutely yes. The important part is what is currently represented is the will of the people against the will of a dictator. If you want to make it as romantic as you like, the will of the many versus the will of the few."

Under Narendra Modi, India has changed dramatically. As the world attempts to grapple with its trajectory towards authoritarianism and a 'Hindu Rashtra' (Hindu State), little attention has been paid to the linkages between Modi's India and the governments from which it has drawn inspiration, as well as military and technical support. India once called Zionism racism, but, as Azad Essa argues, the state of Israel has increasingly become a cornerstone of India's foreign policy. Looking to replicate the 'ethnic state' in the image of Israel in policy and practice, the annexation of Kashmir increasingly resembles Israel's settler-colonial project of the occupied West Bank. The ideological and political linkages between the two states are alarming; their brands of ethnonationalism deeply intertwined. Hostile Homelands: The New Alliance Between India and Israel (Pluto Press, 2023) puts India's relationship with Israel in its historical context, looking at the origins of Zionism and Hindutva; India's changing position on Palestine; and the countries' growing military-industrial relationship from the 1990s. Lucid and persuasive, Essa demonstrates that the India-Israel alliance spells significant consequences for democracy, the rule of law and justice worldwide. Azad Essa is an award-winning journalist and author based between Johannesburg and New York City. One of the scariest things I ever did in my life was leave TV news. I was a TV reporter since I was 19 years old in college, and so when I left the business at the age of 45, I was scared out of my mind. I suddenly became an entrepreneur, and you have to sink or swim. Somebody who can relate to that is my next guest, Sonia Azad, formerly of Channel 8. And before then, Houston and many other markets before that. Now, she hosts corporate wellness and yoga retreats.
Sonia Azad is a two-time Emmy award-winning health journalist, global yoga retreat leader, and wellness influencer based in Dallas, TX. With more than 20 years of extensive work experience in media (TV, print and radio) Sonia has covered: crime in Houston and Chicago, politics in Washington, D.C., immigration in San Diego, International Law in The Netherlands. She also worked in newsrooms in College Station and Waco, TX. In 2012, The Texas Associated Press Broadcasters named her one of the best reporters in the state. Most recently, Sonia spent 7 years as Dallas' premier health reporter at ABC affiliate WFAA-TV. She is now a health and wellness contributor on national TV for Dr. Phil's network, Merit Street Media. Sonia started her own wellness company in 2023 to focus on her podcast, media training, and wellness classes. With more than 1,200 teaching and training hours over the last 10 years, Sonia serves as a continuing education provider for Yoga Alliance. She is trained in 23 lineages of meditation, myofascial release, Yin and Vinyasa yoga. She leads corporate wellness events, hosts yoga retreats around the world and trains professional and student athletes in movement science and mindset. Sonia has a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Texas, plus a Masters of Legal Studies and a Masters of Journalism, both from Northwestern University. Angie Abdullah should be alive today. She should be celebrating the accomplishments and successes of her now-adult children. Instead she was prematurely silenced by a controlling husband who carried out a gruesome murder and attempted to cover his crime with arson, risking the lives of four children in the process. However, her husband, Azad Abdullah, was as inept an arsonist as he was a husband and provider. As a result of his ineptitude, police quickly figured out Azad was responsible for arson, murder, attempted murder, and felony injury to a child. He was sentenced to death for his crimes and he sits today in an Idaho prison awaiting his execution date. Azad Abdullah silenced Angie forever, so today we give a voice to an innocent victim of a tyrannical husband by telling Angie Abdullah's story on Crime to Burn.
