Play Episode Listen Later Aug 27, 2024 9:28

Archduke Franz Ferdinand, as heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was one of the most important men in the world. But he was a lonely man, not helped by the fact that, in spite of custom and tradition, he had chosen for wife Sophie, an aristocrat who nonetheless was not noble enough to marry a Habsburg Archduke. Public humiliation, enforced by the Emperor himself, would plague them for the rest of their lives. In an attempt to show a Habsburg presence in the Balkans, Franz Ferdinand and Sophie had been convinced to undertake a military inspection in Sarajevo, amidst rising nationalist tensions in the area. We review the diplomatic landscape of Europe on the eve of war in the summer of 1914—and then follow the dizzying cascade of events that followed after the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914. We trace on the ensuing crisis that ricocheted through embassies, banquet halls, and barracks all across Europe, and plunged all the great powers of the continent into a war that soon spread around the world. We ask Ben Watkinson, Creative Director of GF Smith, about the power of paper, the work of a paper merchant, resilience, innovation, company culture, longevity and what the next one hundred years might bring. When I begin work with a new client, their specific understanding of success is a vital first step. Often I find myself ushering people towards adding ‘longevity' to the list. In an era where everything seems to happen ever faster, comparison is rife and the state of the world makes it hard to visualise what the future will hold, this is not an easy aspiration to have. But it is a highly valuable one. Today's guest certainly has achieved it. Let me take you back to 1885. George V was on the throne here, Mark Twain published Huckleberry Finn, the football association recognised professional footballers, the Glasgow Boys first exhibited collectively and George Frederick Smith founded a new paper merchant called GF Smith and S on to supply printers with the finest papers. For over 135 years, GF Smith has been obsessed with the simple beauty and limitless possibilities of paper. Their desire is that, through the hands of the design community, they can bring creativity to life and constantly innovate with one of the world's oldest materials.Today's guest is one of the custodians of this great legacy. Ben Watkinson is the Creative Director of GFSmith. ‘Founded in 1885' isn't a marketing slogan; it's an approach to doing business.

fWotD Episode 2493: Edward VII Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Saturday, 2 March 2024 is Edward VII.Edward VII (Albert Edward; 9 November 1841 – 6 May 1910) was King of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Emperor of India, from 22 January 1901 until his death in 1910.The second child and eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Edward, nicknamed "Bertie", was related to royalty throughout Europe. He was Prince of Wales and heir apparent to the British throne for almost 60 years. During his mother's reign, he was largely excluded from political influence and came to personify the fashionable, leisured elite. He married Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863, and the couple had six children. As Prince of Wales, Edward travelled throughout Britain performing ceremonial public duties and represented Britain on visits abroad. His tours of North America in 1860 and of the Indian subcontinent in 1875 proved popular successes, but despite public approval, his reputation as a playboy prince soured his relationship with his mother.Edward inherited the throne upon his mother's death in 1901. The King played a role in the modernisation of the British Home Fleet and the reorganisation of the British Army after the Second Boer War of 1899–1902. He re-instituted traditional ceremonies as public displays and broadened the range of people with whom royalty socialised. He fostered good relations between Britain and other European countries, especially France, for which he was popularly called "Peacemaker", but his relationship with his nephew, German Emperor Wilhelm II, was poor. The Edwardian era, which covered Edward's reign and was named after him, coincided with the start of a new century and heralded significant changes in technology and society, including steam turbine propulsion and the rise of socialism. He died in 1910 in the midst of a constitutional crisis that was resolved the following year by the Parliament Act 1911, which restricted the power of the unelected House of Lords. Edward was succeeded by his only surviving son, George V.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:16 UTC on Saturday, 2 March 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Edward VII on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Nicole Standard.

It's Tuesday, December 26th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Ugandan Christians jailed for evangelism Morning Star News reports that two Christians were jailed for evangelizing in eastern Uganda, Africa.   After three days of evangelism in a higher concentration-Muslim area in the city of Soroti, Joseph Omadi and Isaac Napakol were chased by a mob, and then arrested by police. At issue is Uganda's penal code act which criminalizes “writing or uttering words with the intent to wound religious feelings.”  The language is imprecise and may be used to violate freedom of speech in the country. U.S. retaliates in Iraq after three US troops wounded in attack After three U.S. service men were wounded in a drone attack in northern Iraq, America retaliated with three targeted attacks on terrorist facilities in Iraq Monday, reports Reuters. The facilities are run by Iranian-backed militia, Kataib Hezbollah, and affiliated groups. Gaza Hospital announces 209 injured, 131 dead on Christmas The Israeli-Hamas War continued on Christmas Day. Doctors without Borders reported that a Gaza Strip-area hospital, al Aqsa hospital, admitted 209 injured and 131 dead. USA Today quotes Bethlehem Mayor Hana Haniyeh who said, “Our message every year on Christmas is one of peace and love, but this year it's a message of sadness, grief and anger in front of the international community with what is happening and going on in the Gaza Strip.” And the Roman Catholic Pope Francis took the opportunity to express his grief over what he called the “abominable attack” of Hamas on October 7. He called for the release of hostages and an end to Israel's military campaign in Gaza. King Charles' Christmas message King Charles III brought a Christmas message yesterday — in the tradition of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.   He spoke of Christ exemplifying love for neighbors, offering shelter to others, and stressed the importance of protecting the Earth and “our natural world” including animals.   Listen. KING CHARLES III: “Service to others is but one way of honoring the whole of creation, which, after all, is a manifestation of the Divine. This is a belief shared by all religions. To care for this creation is a responsibility owned by people of all faiths and of none. We care for the Earth, for the sake of our children's children. “During my lifetime, I've been so pleased to see a growing awareness of how we must protect the Earth and our natural world as the one home which we all share. I find great inspiration now from the way so many people recognize this, as does the Christmas story, which tells us that angels brought the message of hope first to shepherds. These were people who lived simply amongst others of God's creatures. Those close to nature were privileged that night.” (You can see the transcript here) His great-grandfather, George V, began the tradition of the Christmas Message to the commonwealth back in the 1930s.  Queen Elizabeth II carried on the tradition from the time of her coronation in 1952. While she mentioned the words of Jesus as the “bedrock” of her faith, the messages typically have not reflected the real reason why Jesus came.  Matthew 1:21 says, “You shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.” 1 John 3:8b explains that Christ came to destroy the works of the devil, and, as Hebrews 2:14 notes, to destroy the one who has the power of death, that is the devil.  In addition, Mark 10:45 says Christ came to give His life as a ransom for many and Luke 4:18-19 explains that He came to proclaim good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to the captives, the recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, and to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. Contrast between Christmas messages of Biden and Trump  President Joe Biden took to social media with a written Christmas message. He wrote “take a few moments of quiet reflection and find that stillness that's at the center of the Christmas story. May you find peace in this silent night. And warmth from those surrounding you.” Former President Donald Trump was far more explicit in his Christmas message to the nation, reports Newsweek. Listen. TRUMP: “More than 2,000 years ago God sent His only begotten Son to be with us. An angel announced the birth of our Lord and Savior to humble shepherds. He said, ‘I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all of the people. Today, in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you. He is the Messiah, the Lord. You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.' At Christmas, we thank God for sending us His Son to bring peace to our souls and joy to the world.” Home mortgage rates dropped According to Freddie Mac's Primary Mortgage Market Survey, home mortgage rates are down again — lowered this week to 6.67% down from 6.95% last week.  That's down from 7.79% in October. Prices for homes remain high in the U.S.  The inventory of homes on the market is 34% below where it was before the pandemic. Existing home sales in November registered 7.3% lower than November of 2022. The median sales price was $387,600 — 4% higher than a year ago. Focus on Christ and need for salvation And finally, from all of us at Generations and The Worldview newscast team, we wish you a blessed Christmas season, always remembering and rejoicing in the coming of Jesus Christ, and our need for His salvation.

In 1899, Queen Victoria decided to send a small brass box containing chocolate to her soldiers fighting in the Boer War. Approximately 123,000 of these gifts were distributed. They were well received and are a fascinating part of material culture from that war. World War I would see a similar royal gift – but this gift would not be directly from the sovereign – it would be part of a campaign led by King George V's daughter, Princess Mary. To discuss Princess Mary's Christmas Gift, the World War I Podcast hosted Professor Peter Doyle, historian and author of For Every Sailor Afloat, Every Soldier at the Front: Princess Mary's Christmas Gift 1914.  Follow us: Twitter: @MacArthur1880 Amanda Williams on Twitter: @AEWilliamsClark Facebook/Instagram: @MacArthurMemorial www.macarthurmemorial.org

Jeannette Black turned 104 this past week, a staggering age to have reached. How did she manage this achievement? There is no reasonable explanation, though avoiding sweets may be one of her secrets to longevity. On being presented with a Carvel ice cream birthday cake, she proclaimed it to be, “too sweet”. Or it may be her lifelong embrace of sarcasm and negativity, a sensible outlook given that she has lived through two once-in-a-century pandemics. On the other side of the Atlantic, Queen Elizabeth II died after a reign of over 70 years. Whatever she embodied socially and politically, she did provide a consistent unifying presence for the UK, and was the only monarch most living humans have known. Unless you turned 104 this week, in which case you have lived during the reigns of five sovereigns: George V, Edward VIII, George VI, QEII, and now King Charles III. To put that in mathematical and historical perspective, if you take Jeannette's birth year, 1918 and subtract her 104 years, you land on 1814, when George III was the monarch. Yes, the same George III who was king during the American revolution. In other news this week, it was the 21st anniversary of the September 11th attacks, which provides a moment to remember those lost on that day, and also to stare in disbelief at how those intervening years have turned Mayor Rudy Giuliani from a mostly respected political leader into a crazed nihilistic side show. And Lewis's “Off the Rails” tour returns this week, with a jam-packed circumnavigation of the New England states, and then it's on to Ohio and Indiana next week. Lewis is looking forward to being back on stage and is hoping he will remember his act, as he has left preparations for the shows to the last minute. “The Rant Is Due” is also back, so send in your rants and remember to tune into the live streams this weekend and throughout the upcoming tour. As Grandson of George V, George Lascelles was a first cousin to Queen Elizabeth II and with his distinguished beard and Nero style jackets, he was the very image of aristocracy, moving in the highest of royal circles, yet it was in the Royal Circles of Britain's opera houses that he felt most at home. It was at English National Opera North (now Opera North) that Lesley Garrett first met George. With their shared love of all things musical, and both proudly from Yorkshire, they developed a friendship that was to last a lifetime. Having survived capture during the Second World War (deepening his knowledge of opera whilst interned as a prisoner of war), he dedicated much of his time to making opera accessible to all. He strove to deliver the best of opera for everyone, with a genuine passion and commitment that inspired all those he worked with. During his career he served as Director of The Royal Opera House, Chairman of the Board of The English National Opera, Managing Director of the ENO, Managing Director of English National Opera North (now Opera North) and outside of opera he served as a Governor of the BBC and President of the British Board of Film Classification. His other great passion was football. He served as President of Leeds United Football Club from 1961 until his death and was President of the Football Association from 1963 to 1972. As Lesley recalls, he believed that both music and sport were 'levelling', that in these worlds there were no kings or paupers. Throughout his life he supported both of these passions, opening doors for everyone, instilling values of accessibility that live on till this day. He died on 11th July 2011 aged 88. Lesley is joined by Professor Alexandra Wilson, a musicologist, author and cultural historian, specialising in Italian opera and British operatic culture from the 1920's to the present day.
