In this episode of the Life and Football Podcast our speical guest was Cody Fagg. At 6’3″ and 210 pounds, wide receiver De’Cody Fagg had the ability to make the tough grab over the middle, but was also fast enough to make plays after the catch during his time at Florida State. In four years at FSU, Fagg had more than 1,600 yards receiving and seven career touchdowns while helping lead the Seminoles to a pair of bowl victories and the 2005 ACC championship. Growing up about 25 miles away from the campus of Florida State University, Fagg rarely thought about being anything other than a Seminole. A native of Quincy, both of his parents would often don the garnet and gold. “From the time I was a little baby, all I knew was FSU because my dad and my mom were FSU fans,” Fagg said. “With my dad working at the Tallahassee Airport, I got the chance to meet a lot of the guys when I was younger. I was able to meet Charlie Ward live in person. My brothers and I would go to a lot of FSU games.” Fagg grew up watching the great Florida State teams of the 1990s, fueled partially by talented receiving corps that included Tamarick Vanover, Kez McCorvey, E.G. Green and Andre Cooper among others. As a youth, Fagg rarely lined up out wide, but made the switch early in his career at Shanks High School. “Coming up through middle school, I was a quarterback, but by the time I transitioned to high school, I became a wide receiver since my older brother was a receiver,” he said. “He was always talking about Peter Warrick this and Peter Warrick that and once I got the chance to get to see him, there was no one more spectacular than that guy there.” After graduating high school in 2003, Fagg briefly attended Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia before heading to Florida State where he would graduate with a degree in Social Science. Fagg spent his career playing for the legendary Bobby Bowden. “He was a father figure,” Fagg said of his former coach. “He took care of all his players and treated them as his own kids no matter the situation. Spending four years with Coach Bowden taught me to be a productive young man off the field and not just on the field.” Fagg still closely follows his alma mater’s football program, which he grew up watching. Fagg said he tries to attend spring practice and some of the summer camps the school hosts. Fagg said he values the time he spent at Florida State and credits his coaches with helping mold him as a young man. The former receiver said he would recommend the school to any perspective recruits or students. “It was the best four years of my life,” Fagg said. “I think that’s where I matured a lot was off the field dealing with Coach Bowden, Coach Dawsey and Coach Fisher. They’re more like lifetime parents. It was a great experience and I wouldn’t wish anything but the best for any kid who is there now or plans on going there in the future.

Sebastian Janikowski, also known as Sea Bass and The Polish Cannon, was born on March 2, 1978 in Valbrich, Poland. His father was a professional soccer player, and in 1980 he moved to the states in an attempt to revive his career. Sebastian was still in Poland with his mother and he began to excel at soccer. He was good enough to make to Poland U-17 team at age 15.Janikowski only played five games for Orangewood Christian soccer team, but scored 15 goals and led them to the state championship, where they lost to Lakeland Christian. He attended Seabreeze High School in Daytona, Florida, where he played soccer and football. His father refused to move, so Sebastian lived with the soccer coach of the high school. He gained reputation quickly by kicking four 50+yard field goals, including a whopping 60 yarder. Witnesses state he successfully converted an 82-yard field goal at team practice. Named to the 1996 All-American team and heavily recruited, Janikowski eventually signing a football scholarship with Florida State University.Janikowski took a scholarship to kick footballs for the Florida State Seminoles where teammate Peter Warrick dubbed him “Sea Bass”. He first made his name by booting his monstrous kickoffs between the opponent’s goal posts and out of the back of the end zone. He won the prestigious Lou Groza Award in 1998 and 1999, which was annually awarded to the top collegiate placekicker. He is the only player in NCAA history to win the award twice. Darrin Simmons is the assistant head coach/and special teams coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. Simmons is now in his 17th season with the team and stands as the longest-tenured coach on staff. Over his Bengals career, Simmons' work with the special teams units has helped re-write the team's record book. Simmons has guided P Kevin Huber to the top spot in every career punting category, including attempts (768), yards (34,618), gross average (45.08), net average (39.79) and inside-20s (266). Under Simmons' direction, Huber has notched the top five seasons in team history for net average and inside-20s, and the top four seasons for gross average. Snapping to Huber for a majority of his career has been another Simmons protégé, LS Clark Harris, who entering 2019 has 1428 career snaps without an unplayable delivery.Simmons' special teams units have also excelled in the return game. He's coached three of the Bengals' top four leaders in career punt return average — leader Adam Jones (11.38), second-place Quan Cosby (9.99) and fourth-place Peter Warrick (9.74) — and four of the team's top six leaders in career kickoff return average — leader Adam Jones (26.35), second-place Alex Erickson, fifth-place Bernard Scott (24.48) and sixth-place Glenn Holt (24.27).Last season under Simmons, the Bengals ranked seventh in punt return coverage (10.7), fifth in kickoff return average (24.9) and ninth in punt coverage (7.3 yards/return). Also, WR Alex Erickson averaged 26.2-yards per kickoff return, the fourth-best single-season mark ever by a Bengal. In 2017, Simmons helped Harris to his first-career Pro Bowl. The veteran LS had 143 snaps (89 punts, 54 placekicks) without an unplayable delivery, and recorded four special teams tackles. In 2016, Simmons guided Erickson's unexpected rise from college free agent to the AFC kickoff return title, with a 27.9 average (on 29 returns). Although he did not make the Pro Bowl, Erickson ranked second in the NFL, and his average was the second-best in Bengals history, behind only the NFL-leading 31.3 mark that CB Adam Jones posted under Simmons in 2014. Erickson became the first Bengal with three KOR of 65 or more yards in a season. In 2015, HB Cedric Peerman made the Pro Bowl as a kick coverage and return-unit performer. Peerman's 17 tackles tied for the Bengals' highest total since 2008, and he had 13 solo stops, leading the Bengals to a No. 3 NFL ranking in opponents' average drive start on kickoffs (20.2 yard line).Simmons guided Huber to the Pro Bowl in 2014, after he posted franchise records for gross (46.8) and net (42.1) average, re-setting club marks he already held. Also in '14, Simmons helped Jones to the NFL lead in kickoff return average, with a team-record mark of 31.26, along with a second-place finish in punt return average (12.0). Jones just missed becoming the first player since Detroit's Mel Gray in 1991 to lead the league in both categories.Simmons' Bengals special teams have shown a nose for the ball, forcing 27 fumbles in his 16 completed seasons. The 1.7 average comfortably outpaces the 1.0 norm for the nine seasons prior to his tenure. In this wide ranging discussion we talk about:- Family- The Importance of Hard Work- Handling Pressure- Routines- Preparation- And LeadershipEnjoy the show!
