The Husker247 crew assembled on Wednesday to talk John Butler and Phil Snow, Nebraska's defense and where some players might fit in and then ran through the schedule for the first time. Things started with a recap of the Tuesday press conference and what Butler had to say, how he works with Snow and where Nebraska needs a few players to emerge in 2025, Then the trio talked through Javin Wright, Deshon Singleton and Elijah Jeudy and their media appearances as well. After a quick break things turned to prognosticating Nebraska's schedule. The early season over/under line is 7.5 wins. Who goes eight? Who thinks only seven? This week was a quasi-special episode because we didn't have a game to break down, but that doesn't mean we didn't have news. On the Corn Nation Overreaction this week, Greg, Hoss, and Jake discuss the additions made to the coaching staff last week as Dana Holgorsen and Phil Snow arrived in Lincoln. Snow is a defensive guru who has been coaching football for 47 years. He will provide Tony White with another seasoned perspective to get the Blackshirts, who are still very good - in the top 25 in most defensive categories, performing at a level they were at last year. Holgorsen comes to Nebraska with objective success at the collegiate level, being either Offensive Coordinator or Head Coach at schools with prolific offenses in the last 15 years. Will he be able to assist OC Marcus Satterfield in strategic game planning to result in that elusive sixth win and subsequent bowl eligibility? Our game predictions are at the end, and as our departed brother Brian Towle would say, “win the damn game.”

NFL – National Football League – Week 5 Last Night Kansas City Chiefs 30, Las Vegas Raiders 29 Chiefs 30, Raiders 29 – Chiefs hold on for wild 30-29 victory over rival Raiders Patrick Mahomes threw four touchdown passes to Travis Kelce, the Chiefs overcame an early 17-point deficit along with a dubious roughing-the-passer penalty, and Kansas City extended its mastery of the Las Vegas Raiders, holding on for a 30-29 victory. The Raiders had a chance to march for the winning field goal, but a pass to Davante Adams that was ruled a catch was overturned by replay, which showed him stepping out of bounds. That brought up fourth down in the closing seconds, and Derek Carr’s final pass fell incomplete to allow Kansas City to hold on. NFL – Roughing-the-passer call prompts officiating scrutiny A controversial roughing-the-passer penalty just before halftime of the Las Vegas Raiders’ game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night delivered another blow to the NFL and its beleaguered officiating crew. The Chiefs had just scored to trim their deficit to 17-7 just before halftime when Chris Jones stripped Derek Carr from behind. The Pro Bowl defensive tackle landed on the Raiders quarterback while also coming away with the ball, and replays showed it was clearly loose and that Jones clearly recovered, but referee Carl Cheffers threw a flag for roughing the passer. The call came one day after referee Jerome Boger was panned for a roughing call on Tom Brady that helped the Buccaneers seal their win over Atlanta. NFL – Panthers fire Matt Rhule after 1-4 start; Wilks takes over The Carolina Panthers have fired coach Matt Rhule, ending the former Baylor coach’s tenure five games into his third losing season. Rhule is the first NFL coach to be fired this season. He went 11-27 with Carolina and leaves with roughly $40 million left on the seven-year, guaranteed $62 million contract he signed in 2020. Defensive pass game coordinator and secondary coach Steve Wilks will serve as interim coach for the rest of the season. The Panthers also fired two of Rhule’s longtime assistants, defensive coordinator Phil Snow and assistant special teams coach Ed Foley. MLB – Major League Baseball Playoffs – Divisional Series – Best of Five Today Philadelphia (Suárez 10-7) at Atlanta (Fried 14-7), 1:07 p.m. Seattle (Gilbert 13-6) at Houston (Verlander 18-4), 3:37 p.m. Cleveland (Quantrill 15-5) at New York (Cole 13-8), 7:37 p.m. San Diego (Clevinger 7-7) at Los Angeles (Urías 17-7), 9:37 p.m. MLB – MLB Playoffs: Judge, Verlander join fray as 8 teams remain Major League Baseball’s first foray into a best-of-three wild-card round provided its share of memorable moments. A 15-inning, 432-pitch game. A seven-run comeback win. Joe Musgrove’s ears. Now it’s on to the division series, which is business as usual with a best-of-five format. The four matchups are Braves-Phillies, Padres-Dodgers, Mariners-Astros and Guardians-Yankees and all of them begin Tuesday. The Astros, Yankees, Braves and Dodgers got to rest and watch the wild-card drama round from home, thanks to superior regular season records. MLB – Giants hire Pete Putila as new general manager The San Francisco Giants have hired Houston assistant general manager Pete Putila as their new GM. President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi announced that Putila will replace Scott Harris, who was hired as GM for the Detroit Tigers last month. The 33-year-old Putila was in his 12th season with the Astros and third as assistant general manager. Houston has advanced to the postseason in each of Putila’s three seasons as assistant GM, reaching the World Series last season and the American League Championship Series in 2020. MLB – Cubs’ Hoyer planning more ‘intelligent spending’ this winter Chicago Cubs President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer says he is encouraged by how the team finished the franchise’s second straight losing season. But he says the organization is focused on the short and long term when it comes to its offseason plans. Hoyer is staying with the ambiguous concept of “intelligent spending” — which could price the big-market club out of the massive contracts at the top end of the free-agent market. While Hoyer left himself miles of wiggle room when it comes to the team’s offseason plans, he did confirm the club would make a qualifying offer to All-Star catcher Willson Contreras. NHL – National Hockey League – Regular Season Start Tonight Tampa Bay Lightning at New York Rangers, 7:30 p.m. Vegas Golden Knights at Los Angeles Kings, 10:00 p.m. -Blackhawks open up on Wednesday at Colorado at 9:00 p.m. -Red Wings open up on Friday vs. Montreal at 7:00 p.m. NHL – Blackhawks claim D Jarred Tinordi off waivers from Rangers The Chicago Blackhawks have claimed defenseman Jarred Tinordi off waivers from the New York Rangers. The 30-year-old Tinordi scored a goal in seven games with New York last season. He was selected by Montreal in the first round of the 2010 draft. The Blackhawks open the regular season on Wednesday night at Colorado. NBA – National Basketball Association – Preseason Tonight Oklahoma City Thunder at Detroit Pistons, 7:00 p.m. Milwaukee Bucks at Chicago Bulls, 8:00 p.m. NCAAFB – Wisconsin’s Mellusi hurts wrist, won’t play against Spartans Wisconsin running back Chez Mellusi will miss at least one game after injuring his right wrist in the Badgers’ 42-7 victory over Northwestern. Mellusi has rushed for 223 yards and one touchdown on 56 carries this season. Wisconsin announced Monday that Mellusi wouldn’t be available when the Badgers visit Michigan State on Saturday. Badgers interim head coach Jim Leonhard said it was uncertain just how much time Mellusi would miss. Mellusi rushed for 815 yards and five touchdowns in nine games with Wisconsin last year before a torn left anterior cruciate ligament knocked him out for the remainder of the season. Golf – LIV – Johnson has $30 million year and growing in LIV Golf Dustin Johnson already is assured of a $30 million year with Saudi-funded LIV Golf. Johnson finished out of the top 10 for the first time in six events last week in Bangkok. But because Branden Grace had to withdraw because of injury, Johnson is assured of claiming the points race. He has a 42-point lead over Grace. Johnson has won about $12.7 million in earnings, with $3 million of that coming from the team competition. Winning the season points title comes with an $18 million bonus. Johnson still has two events left this year. NWSL – NWSL players call for owner to sell Chicago franchise The fallout is continuing after the release of a report into misconduct in the National Women’s Soccer League. Chicago Red Stars players are calling for owner Arnim Whisler to sell the team. Alaska Airline says it’s diverting Thorns and Timbers sponsorship dollars this quarter to an NWSL Players Association emergency fund to protect players. The NWSL has also dismissed the coach of the Orlando Pride and an assistant following an investigation into retaliatory behavior. Gymnastics – USA Gymnastics expands mental health services for athletes USA Gymnastics is expanding its mental health coverage for athletes and coaches. The organization will provide financial assistance for up to eight visits a year to mental health providers for eligible national team members across all disciplines. The new plan also allows for four visits to mental health providers for eligible coaches. USA Gymnastics will reimburse athletes/coaches up to $125 per visit. Coaches and athletes may use whatever health care provider they would like if the provider has “appropriate training and licensure in sport psychology or mental health.” Funding for the program was provided in part by the organization’s sponsorship deal with apparel provider GK Elite.

Among the topics discussed:  Which offensive and defensive trends we should be watching this season; Why the Cowboys and Saints, respectively, should NEVER play single-high coverage against Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers; The one personnel package that might save Dallas' defense against the Bucs; How Dean Pees will bring all kinds of things for Atlanta's defense, and how Jalen Hurts can deal with it; Why the Steelers' defense should be the team's real concern, especially against the Bills' empty packages; Why we're definitely concerned about Ja'Marr Chase, even against the Vikings' cornerback group; Why Jimmy Garoppolo might have a shot at a good Sunday against the Lions; Why Kliff Kingsbury had better shake his offense up against Tennessee's improved pass defense; Why the whole "Just give Carson Wentz a bunch of quick passes to get him comfortable" thing might not be the fix Frank Reich hopes it will be; How Justin Herbert can solve Washington's top-notch defense; Why Zach Wilson vs. Phil Snow looks like a sneaky-good matchup; How the Texans can make the most of Tyrod Taylor, and how the Jaguars had better make the most of Trevor Lawrence with scheme; Why Jason Garrett needs to let Daniel Jones turn it loose;  And why we have no earthly idea what Matt Nagy is doing with his quarterbacks... especially against the pressure the Rams will bring.

1. Falcons -With the fourth overall pick, the Falcons decided to pass on a potential successor to Matt Ryan and instead took Kyle Pitts, the best non-QB prospect in the draft. Even though Pitts is listed as a tight end that, at least to some degree, is a misnomer. You can line him up inline, in the slot, or even at the X receiver position, and he is still equally as effective. Assuming the Falcons keep Julio Jones this season, does the addition of Kyle Pitts make the Falcons pass catching unit the most dangerous in the NFL? -In the second round, the Falcons traded down five spots and selected Richie Grant, the talented, versatile safety out of UCF. Atlanta obviously needed a safety, but some would argue they should’ve went with Trevon Moehrig, who went just three picks later to the Raiders. Do you think Richie Grant was the right pick for the Falcons in terms of fit, or do you think they’ll regret taking him over Moehrig? -In the third round, the Falcons made their first of two dips in the interior offensive line pool by selecting Jalen Mayfield, who played tackle at Michigan, but projects far better at guard in the NFL. Some were putting him in first-round mocks early in the process, but an underwhelming Pro Day sent him tumbling down the board. Do you think Mayfield is one of those prospects where the tape is far better than the way he tested? Does he have a shot to beat out Josh Andrews for that starting LG spot in training camp? 2. Panthers -With the eighth overall pick, the Panthers selected South Carolina CB Jaycee Horn, making him the first defensive player off the board. As you discussed on our Dash To The Draft DB’s special, Horn is the ideal corner for a press/man scheme. However, the Panthers run more of a zone-oriented scheme under defensive coordinator Phil Snow. Are you at least somewhat troubled by the scheme fit here between the Panthers and Jaycee Horn? -After trading down twice in the second round, the Panthers got potential highway robbery with LSU WR Terrace Marshall, Jr. Marshall fell due to concerns about his injury history, but he brings a Courtland Sutton/Alshon Jeffery skill-set that the Panthers were sorely lacking at receiver. Sam Darnold now has a mouth-watering 11 personnel package with D.J. Moore, Robby Anderson, and now Terrace Marshall. With weapons like these plus a healthy Christian McCaffrey, is Sam Darnold a quiet candidate for 2021 Comeback Player of the Year honors? -With their first of two third-round picks, the Panthers went with a sorely needed OL upgrade in Brady Christensen, who protected Zach Wilson’s blindside at BYU. However, Matt Rhule said that the Panthers view him as someone who can play four different OL positions and added that he can be “elite” at guard. Do you think Brady Christensen will be better at tackle or guard in the NFL? 3. Saints -For the second time in four years, the Saints selected a “non-Power Five” pass rusher (Marcus Davenport in 2018, and Payton Turner in 2021). Turner obviously flew up draft boards after his freakish Pro Day, where he showed off his 84-inch wingspan. Can you see Payton Turner overtaking Marcus Davenport for the starting DE spot opposite Cameron Jordan at some point this season? -In the second round, the Saints filled a massive void at linebacker with Ohio State’s Pete Werner, While nowhere near the freak athlete his fellow Buckeye Baron Browning is, he is a cerebral, hard-hat/lunch-pail player in the mold of long-time Vikings LB Chad Greenway. Do you see Pete Werner become the starting MLB with on-field play-calling duties in New Orleans relatively quickly?

Before they get into a weak defensive tackle class, Vincent & JJ discuss two huge roster moves that happened in the past week - the trade for presumed new starting QB Sam Darnold and the signing of presumed starting cornerback AJ Bouye. Does this preclude them from drafting a QB at the eighth pick? How about a CB like Patrick Surtain or Jaycee Horn? What the hosts' thoughts on the moves? Is there an answer to the question of who lines up next to Derrick Brown in the 2021 draft? Where do big boys like Levi Onwuzurike, Cam Sample, Daviyon Bixon and Christian Barmore fit into the draft? Would sleepers like Jaylen Twyman and Osa Odighizuwa fit in well on Phil Snow's defense? Scouting The Culture is a proud part of The Riot Network. Vincent & JJ are back on the draft train, starting with a full discussion on how the draft trades between San Francisco, Miami and Philly last week affect the Panthers draft plans with the eighth pick - does this all but guarantee that a left tackle or cornerback is taken in the first round? They'll talk a bit about Greg Little and the rest of the Panthers LT options before diving into the cornerbacks of the 2021 draft. Besides Donte Jackson, where do the Panthers stand in the secondary? Can Myles Hartsfield man the nickel spot and is there a corner in the draft who can occupy the #1 corner spot in Carolina? Why does Vincent consider Tyson Campbell among the top guys along with Patrick Surtain and Jaycee Horn? Is Caleb Farley overrated? Could a player like Kelvin Joseph or Ifeatu Melifonwu fit the Phil Snow scheme if the Panthers go a different way in the first round? A full diagnosis of the Panthers cornerback position and the 2021 draft class in this week's episode! In a blast from the past, Dan Kreso joins the show to talk through the 2020 Defensive Draft Class for the 2020 Panthers with Vincent Richardson! They'll go selection by selection and talk through how they think each player, from Derrick Brown to Stan Thomas-Oliver fits into the Panthers defense, what kind of fun wrinkles Phil Snow might have planned in the secondary - will he run the weird three safety set he ran at Baylor? - and whether any of the UDFAs have a chance to make the Panthers roster in 2020. Plus, Dan is higher on Troy Pride and Vincent realizes that Phil Snow and Matt Rhule value other things in cornerbacks than he does, but they're all very high on Jeremy Chinn and how this defense might look in 2020 -- if it won't be effective, it'll certainly be interesting. With the draft in the rearview mirror, we hope that you enjoyed this offseason's series The Great British Drafting Show and that you'll tell your friends to join us in 2021 so that we can spread the word about every Panthers prospect as the Matt Rhule Era continues in Carolina and the team continues to get better - we hope to see you next year and CHEERS! The boys talk their way through this year's linebacker class, including whether or not Vincent thinks there is a direct Luke Kuechly replacement available with the seventh pick, why you must be careful with Isaiah Simmons and have a plan before drafting him, what Vincent looks for in both an inside and an outside linebacker and how each type of player fits in with the Panthers. They'll run through the top linebackers at both positions (including Queen, Crowder, Brooks, Bernard and Murray) and highlight why Logan Wilson from Wyoming might be a particularly strong fit for Phil Snow and the Panthers defense. As Oli and Vincent continue their look at the Panthers roster heading into 2020 and where they might want to fill some holes in free agency and - of course - the draft, they take a look at the defense and how terrible it was in 2019...and what needs to happen to make it better in 2020. Will Dontari Poe be back? James Bradberry? Ross Cockrell? Does it make sense to - gulp - bring back Vernon Butler on a cheap deal? What will be Mario Addison's fate? Where does Shaq fit in now that Luke has retired? There are tons of questions that the guys will get to, including what they think of Phil Snow, how the scheme might look next season and whether or not Derrick Brown would make the most sense for a first-round draft pick.
