Philip Reed loves to create stuff and things, from roleplaying game supplements to music to whatever sounds fun at that exact moment in time. He can often be found working when he should be sleeping. He has been doing this for more than 30 years, and chances are you have played something he had his hands on. I feel in love with his work through Frag, and I've loved his presence since he was super kind to me years ago! Smile, you're listening to a podcast about Candid Camera. Created by Allen Funt, Candid Camera was America's first prank reality show. A case could be made that this show is responsible for the reality television trend that led to a con man being packaged as a “successful businessman” and is now pranking America as prez. Strange Country cohosts Beth and Kelly talk about this pioneering show whilst smiling through their tears. Theme music: Big White Lie by A Cast of Thousands. Billy Blue is a RPG artist and game designer. His clients include, Gallant Knight Games, Philip Reed, Gaming Ballistic, and Yog Du games. He also recently released his own RPG called TLD RPG, a rules lite Dark Fantasy RPG in which he works on integrating his art and writing into a single thing. And we talked a lot about exactly that on the podcast. How to integrate Art and Game Design. We talked about the bless/curse of writing, illustrating, doing layout and everything in a book. We mentioned a lot of other creators whose work and creativity inspires us. Honestly, we talked a lot about art, creativity, process, etc. It's an episode in which these themes come up a lot and I think that's really great. It can be very inspiring and useful to other creators. We had a great time and I hope you do too! So listen up and get weird with us! Check out Billy's links! Philip Reed, Automotive Writer at NerdWallet.com, joins host Kent Smetters to discuss his recent article "Car Negotiating Secrets for People Who Hate Haggling" on Your Money. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Philip Reed is coasting toward retirement, looking for one last adventure, when he meets Bill Palis, a professional blackjack player and former member of the legendary MIT team that took the casinos for millions. At a blackjack table in a strip casino, Phil sees Bill win $1,600 in 20 minutes of play—and he’s intrigued. Initially, he plans to write the book as a spectator, but Bill encourages him to overcome his fears, learn to count cards, and get a piece of the action for himself. The two men form a friendship and begin traveling and playing blackjack together, often with Father Andy, who kicks in money so they can play out of a $30,000 bankroll. Phil, who has adult ADD, and flunked math in high school, adopts the challenge of card counting as a way to banish the old ghosts of his poor self-image and build new synapses in his aging brain. With Bill as his tough mentor, Phil struggles to learn the game and secretly track the cards. As Phil's play improves, Bill teaches him to disguise his wins and avoid scrutiny from casino security and the Orwellian “eye-in-the-sky” security cameras. Philip Reed punctuates WILD CARDS with short, funny, informational sections on various gambling-related subjects. These sections step outside the main story and add depth by investigating different card counting systems, the danger of gambling addiction, interviews with memory experts, and secrets of dealers, pit bosses, and casino surveillance specialists. Throughout, he takes a humorous look at casino characters, even as he begins to sink into the gambling world himself.
Philip Reed is a multi-platform author, writing about a variety of subjects in a simple and compelling style that changes people's lives. His sports series is about performance under pressure in basketball, golf and blackjack and his latest book is "Wild Cards, A Year Counting Cards with a Professional Blackjack Player, a Priest and a $30,000 bankroll." On this episode of Bulletproof Radio, Philip sits down with Dave to talk about counting cards, cognitive enhancement in the casino, working memory, the importance of mentorship and teamwork, performance learning curves and more. Enjoy the show!
