Wells first published The Food of the Gods and How It Came to Earth in 1904. He called it “a fantasia on the change of scale in human affairs… I had hit upon [the idea] while working out the possibilities of the near future in a book of speculations called Anticipations (1901).” This novel is about a group of scientists that invent food that accelerates the growth of children turning them into giants upon becoming adults. There have been many B-movie adaptations. This is Wells at his finest with a science experiment gone wrong.

Experiencing the Killers Live: A Night to Remember with Surprises and ChallengesKey TakeawaysConcert Atmosphere: The Killers' live performance was commended for its high fidelity to their recorded sound and a well-balanced engagement with the audience.Venue Issues: The experience was marred by subpar seating, perplexing security measures, and crowd management challenges at Caesar's Palace Coliseum.Audience Dynamics: Specific behaviors of fellow concertgoers significantly affected the overall enjoyment of the event. The Concert Atmosphere: Stellar Performance by the KillersAttending a live concert should be a thrilling experience, and for the most part, the Killers did not disappoint. The performance was described as "fantastic," with the band staying true to their recorded sound and delivering a show that met high expectations. As Mike notes, "The Killers themselves sound just like they do, recorded. They do a great live performance."One noteworthy aspect of the concert was the band's efficient interaction with the audience. Unlike some artists who may spend excessive time talking, the Killers balanced their set with relevant commentary. Torya appreciated how Brandon Flowers, the lead vocalist, limited his discussions to pertinent topics: "Everything the Killers did had to say was relevant to the fact that this was a show commemorating the 20th anniversary of their album."This approach helped maintain the energy and flow of the concert, offering a seamless experience that kept fans engaged from start to finish. The band's decision to limit talking and extend song intros and outros for a live twist was also a hit. As Torya remarked, "When I used to go to concerts back in the day when I was in high school, they used to change the endings and beginnings of songs to extend them out a bit. The Killers did just enough of that."Venue Issues: Challenges at Caesar's Palace ColiseumDespite the outstanding performance, the venue left much to be desired. Caesar's Palace Coliseum was fraught with issues that significantly detracted from the overall experience. Starting with the seating, there was confusion and disappointment, as Torya explained: "We get there, and I'm looking, and I'm going, what? Why is it 405 or whatever it was? Doesn't make any sense. What happened to one, two, and three?" This seating mishap resulted in them being placed in folding chairs, an unexpected scenario that Mike humorously dubbed "Ghetto island."Security measures at the venue also posed a problem. According to Torya, the new security scanning process was supposed to be efficient but fell short: "They have these stupid security things that they have here in Vegas… you're supposed to put your stuff over your head, and it just scans the rest of you." Despite these measures, she and Mike both experienced the frustration of being directed to be wanded after setting off detectors. The crowning issue was the inadequate crowd management. Mike recounted their departure from the venue: "It's an old venue, so there's a single escalator going down each level… They had to close the escalator after every so many people because it couldn't handle the weight." This inefficient exit process left attendees, including Mike and Torya, navigating a chaotic and uncomfortable situation.Audience Dynamics: Impact of Fellow ConcertgoersThe behavior of other concert attendees also played a significant role in shaping the night. Proximity to disruptive individuals can make or break an experience, and unfortunately, Mike and Torya had their fair share of unwelcome interactions. Mike explained, "The people… there was a group of six of them. They were wasted. When they came in, they were like spilling their shit."Torya had her own uncomfortable encounter with a drunken concertgoer: "Then I had the guy above me dancing. He's drunk as hell… If he spills his beer on me again, we're going to have a problem." Managing such situations can be stressful and often detracts from the enjoyment of the show.In contrast, other concert experiences mentioned in the transcript, like those at Resorts World for Katy Perry and Luke Bryan, were notably positive and hassle-free. Mike pointed out, "We went to Resorts world two consecutive Wednesdays to see Luke Bryan and Katy Perry. Did we have any problems? No." This starkly highlights how different venues and audience dynamics can vary the concert-going experience. The thorny issues at Caesar's Palace Coliseum serve as a valuable lesson for concertgoers: venue choice matters significantly. Despite an electrifying performance by the Killers, the experience was marred by logistical and interpersonal challenges. For future concerts, selecting a venue with better crowd management, efficient security measures, and considerate crowd behavior can make a world of difference. In a bid to continue enjoying live music, Mike and Torya are already looking forward to their upcoming concerts with 21 Pilots and A Day to Remember in different venues, hoping these experiences run more smoothly. Mike encapsulated their sentiment perfectly, saying, "I hope to just be able to say 21 Pilots was fantastic and move on with my life."Their candid reflections provide a crucial insider perspective on the hidden challenges of concert-going and underscore the importance of a conducive environment for a memorable live music experience.TimestampSummary0:00The Killers' 20th Anniversary Concert at Caesar's Palace1:19Concert Venue Security Mishaps and Food Court Strategies2:58Terrible Seating and Heat Issues at Caesar's Coliseum6:35Concert Chaos: Great Grandpa's Confusion and Beer-Spilling Drunks8:14A Chaotic Concert Experience and Venue Frustrations11:36Concert Disruptions and Annoying Behavior11:43Concert Experiences and The Impact of Tourists14:06Concert Experiences and Anticipations at Various Venues

Uṣūlist Anticipations of the Conditional Perfection Problem: Evading Inverse Errors in Dalīl al-Khiṭāb, Mafhūm al-Mukhālafa, and al-Istidlāl bi-l-Ḥaṣr by Dr Walter Edward Young

Al-Mahdi Institute Podcasts

For centuries, under the rubrics of dalīl al-khiṭāb, mafhūm al-mukhālafa, and al-istidlāl bi-l-ḥaṣr, Muslim legal theorists debated the validity of affirming for what is unspoken the contradictory of the ruling for what is spoken. Put differently, if revelation links a ruling to a specified attribute of a thing, does this entail (linguistically, logically, or in some other way) the opposite ruling for what lacks that attribute? Referring to a common example: Does the Prophet's assertion that zakāt is due on free-grazing sheep (fī sāʾimat al-ghanam zakāt) entail that zakāt is not due on fodder-fed sheep? Navigating the confluence of linguistic and logical implication, uṣūlist discourse on this issue reached a considerable degree of refinement, and has inspired a number of informative studies in past decades. So far, however, some important linguistic-logical parallels seem to have escaped notice. First is the fact that propositions which link a ruling to a specified attribute may be formally rendered as conditionals, and the inference “If p then q, not-p, therefore not-q” (with a conditional major premise) constitutes the formal fallacy of denying the antecedent (aka the inverse fallacy); whereas the inference “If and only if p then q, not-p, therefore not-q” (with a biconditional major premise) is valid. Second is the fact that in some cases contextual factors dictate that propositions formulated as mere conditionals (if p then q) should be understood as biconditionals (if and only if p then q), thus allowing valid inferences of the inverse (if not-p then not-q). Third, and on top of these older, logical observations, modern pragmaticians have developed a lively discourse around “conditional perfection”: our tendency to hear conditionals as biconditionals (subconsciously “perfecting the conditional”) and thus to accept inferences of the inverse. As is too often the case with modern theorists, however, they have proceeded in evident ignorance of very rich and relevant premodern discourses. This talk therefore aims first to present select definitions, typologies, and controversies of the uṣūlist discourse on dalīl al-khiṭāb, mafhūm al-mukhālafa, and al-istidlāl bi-lḥaṣr, second to understand these with reference to their logical parallels, and third to juxtapose all this with a summary of the modern discourse on conditional perfection, suggesting (as in previous studies) how centuries of refined, premodern Islamic theorising and debate can complement and contribute to the (sometimes re-inventive) efforts of modern theorists.

The morning! That is our watchword. Our evening prayers and songs are filled with hope. The morning adds hue to life, imparting color to that which is colorless, and freshening that which is faded. It is the essence of our hopes and dreams. Stars may help to make the sky less gloomy, but they are not the sun – and besides, clouds have now covered them so they are no longer visible. Torches and beacon lights do not help. Our own lights make no impression upon the darkness; it is so deep, so real, so unmistakable. We might give up all for lost if we were not assured that there is a sun and that it is hastening to rise, and we are watching for it. The church's pilgrimage is nearly complete, yet she is no less a pilgrim as its end draws near. The last stage of the journey might be the dreariest for her. Her path lies through the thickest darkness that the world has yet felt. It is the sound of falling kingdoms that is guiding us onward. It is the fragments of broken thrones lying across our path that assure us that our route is the true one and that its end is near. Then comes the morning with its songs; and in that morning, a kingdom; and in that kingdom, glory; and in that glory, the everlasting rest, the Sabbath of eternity. We belong to the day, and the day belongs to us, as our true heritage – and when it comes, we will not be ashamed for having zealously awaited that great day. About the Author In 1808, Horatius Bonar was born into a family of several generations of ministers of the gospel. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh and was ordained in 1838. As a young pastor at North Parish, Kelso, he preached in villages and farmhouses, proving himself to be a comforter and guide. In 1843, he joined 450 other pastors to form the Free Church of Scotland after the “Disruption.” Horatius Bonar wrote numerous books, tracts, periodicals, and more than 600 hymns. He believed that people needed truth, not opinions; God, not theology; and Christ, not religion. From his first sermon to his last, he ended with “In such an hour as ye think not, the Son of Man cometh.”

Closing Arguments for Trump Hush Money Trial Set to Begin Next Week

We're currently navigating through the sixth week of the former President Donald Trump's trial concerning allegations of falsifying corporate records, commonly known in the media as 'hush money', and the developments suggest a shift in the winds. Presiding Justice Juan Merchan of New York Supreme Court commenced the week with a significant announcement, setting the stage for the final arguments to take place in the forthcoming week. Anticipations are rife regarding the end of Michael Cohen's testimony on Monday, which has been a focal point of interest throughout the trial. Trump's legal counsel successfully utilized Cohen's previous law infringements and deceitful history, in an attempt to question his trustworthiness last week. The prosecution, however, insists that additional witnesses and financial records endorse Cohen's declarations. Justice Merchan offered some guidance to the defense team, outlining areas for former Federal Election Commission chairman, Bradley A. Smith's testimony. The defense aims to exploit Smith's knowledge to convince the jury that Trump did not intend to manipulate the 2016 election through his alleged misinterpretation of his business records. Parsing federal election laws is the proposed route, although, the experts are forbidden to explain the law or give interpretations, as per Merchan's direction. He expressed concern that Smith's testimony on campaign finance law would inevitably involve discussions or references regarding federal law precedents or the underlying intentions behind such rules.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How Do Pharma and Digital Health Converge in 2024? (Amir Lahav)

In 2023, Insilico Medicine—a biotech company developing medications with a heavy reliance on AI—used AI to develop an experimental drug for the incurable lung disease idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The treatment is in mid-stage trials in the US and China, with some results expected in early 2025. Biotech is one of the fields that has been using generative AI for years, even before ChatGPT brought the technology to public view. Latest technology is essential in drug development. However, the convergence of digital health and pharma seems less clear. Digital health apps started gaining popularity around 2015, and at that time, it seemed all pharma companies were trying to figure out what they could gain from apps, so they financed accelerators and incubators one after the other. We've seen many ideas about how Pharma should or could use digital health. In the last few years, there have been many notorious cases when partnerships failed—a seemingly unicorn, Proteus, which designed digital sensors-equipped pills, went bankrupt in 2019 after Otsuka Pharmaceuticals pulled out of a funding round. Pear Therapeutics, the guiding star in the DTx space and the leader in FDA-cleared prescription digital therapeutics, partnered with Novartis, but in the end, the company filed for bankruptcy in 2023. So where is Pharma in relation to digital health and digital therapeutics? In this episode, Amir Lahav shares his thoughts about the impact of AI on biotech, the state of decentralized clinical trials, and the potential of technology for improved drug development, clinical trials, and patient responses. He highlights how heightened stress and negative emotions have become formidable obstacles on our path to well-being. Dr. Macklin stresses the crucial role of intuition in discerning truth from misinformation, cautioning against becoming ensnared by negative energy. The conversation takes a fascinating turn as it delves into the Israeli-Hamas conflict and the presence of negative entities, such as draconians, that can influence and incite aggression in individuals. Dr. Macklin proposes a remarkable solution: raising the planet's vibration through initiatives like the Pyramid Project, which could help banish these malevolent beings. Unity and forgiveness emerge as recurring themes, as the discussion pivots towards addressing concerns about child trafficking and corruption. The conversation resonates with a call for collective action and references a powerful ritual aimed at achieving justice. A unique perspective on global affairs emerges, including notions about the bankruptcy of the "United States of America Incorporated" and the importance of ousting the current administration and unpatriotic politicians. The power of love, as experienced at a Mayan temple, and the significance of maintaining a positive vibration are discussed. The dialogue branches into a variety of topics, including the vaccination situation in Israel and the implications of transhumanism. Intriguingly, the conversation explores the presence of nanotechnology in the body, its replication, and the need for meticulous detoxification. They mention a nanosphere with 92 holes and its potential for virus containment, alluding to the fascinating concept of splitting timelines. This unique program's purported impact on wellness is discussed, and the conversation takes a thought-provoking turn towards timelines and potential shifts in administration. Our host speaker Michael Jaco raises the possibility of military intervention and advises caution, suggesting that leaving major cities temporarily may be wise. Amidst expressions of exhaustion and dedication to their mission, the speaker shares their beliefs in the presence of entities and how consciousness and intent can provide protection.
