#93 – When Sam Demma started his undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto Scarborough it didn't take long for him to realize that while he might be in the right place, he was there at the wrong time. Had he put enough thought into his programs of study? Was he just going to school because that's what he was supposed to do? These were questions running through his mind, but ultimately, he was thinking about what he really wanted; to build his own business motivating youth to take action.Sam already had plenty of practice speaking to high school students from his time running PickWaste, a volunteer organization that mobilizes youth to pick up litter in their communities, and he felt like motivating our youth is what he was meant to do. So, Sam had to make a choice. Stay in school and find the right academic path, or leave to start his entrepreneurial journey? To find out what path Sam took at his academic crossroads, listen to my interview with him on Career Crossroads today.Where to Find Sam online:samdemma.com@sam_demma on Instagram@sam_demma on Twitter@sam_demma on YouTube___________________You can find Career Crossroads at careercrossroads.ca or follow us on social media: Instagram: @career_crossroadsLinkedIn: Career Crossroads PodcastFacebook: Career Crossroads PodcastTikTok: @jonathancollaton

Our young guest Sam Demma is a 21-year-old entrepreneur, youth coach, and keynote speaker. He co-founded PickWaste, created the High Performing Student, delivered two TEDx Talks, and is the youngest member of CAPS – Canadian Association of Professional Speakers. In our episode today he talks to us about: - His own experience of not being able to play football due to his knee injuries which led to depression. - How and who helped him overcome depression and changes he made to come back stronger. - How he started doing voluntary work of picking up the waste in his own city which inspired other kids and then schools invited him as a guest speaker which was the beginning of his journey as a Key Note Speaker. - He share how "Gen X and Millennials" care about future and what their visions are... - He learnt from Jason Brown owner of Dip Drops on how to keep the scores differently. Jason said most people keep score by how much money they are making, if Jason would be in his 20's again he would keep the scores by how much he learnt and how many new experiences he had vs money. - Whenever someone gets impatient it is because they dont get the results they expect and that is most often related to finances. - As a young entrepreneur if you are not learning and experiencing its a wrong thing to do. -If you have to choose between making money vs having new experiences, most people will choose money. The most ironic thing is that if you have more experience you learn new things you become more valuable and ten year later you'll probably make way more money as a consequence of that decision. - One of the biggest mistakes is loosing your hunger for service to others in the pursuit of money. - If you are giving extreme amount of value you will make extreme amount of money. Money is just an exchange for value says Sam - During Covid-19 his events got cancelled so he shares how he pivoted from in person to online events. - He also created a course called "high preforming students" helping student's plan and achieve their goals. This is Episode 13 of the VulnerABLE Podcast! From not being able to ask a girl to dance with him in grade school, to an injury that ended his soccer career. Now he's using his story to spread the inspiring message of taking Small Consistent Actions! From being to shy to ask a girl to the school dance, to being to stubborn to ask for help even if it meant literally peeing his pants. He would begin learning major life lessons at a young age, and it’s helping him on his journey. An amazing soccer player, with dreams of going professional, he poured blood sweat and tears into the sport, and his dreams almost came true. With a scholarship on the line he started the game of his life on cloud nine, but then a slide tackle, something he’d experienced many times would take him out. This was just the beginning of a number of injuries that would eventually lead to him leaving the sport he loved so much. With all of his identity tied to that one thing for so many years, he was left feeling lost and searching for something to give him new meaning. Little did he know that one class, and one teacher would lead him to realizing that life wasn’t about the grand acts we’re all trying to achieve, it’s more about the small consistent actions we take throughout our lives that matter. This lead to him picking up garbage on his way home, hoping to make his own small impact on the environment. Then with one of his best friends they’d co-found a movement called PickWaste. They began performing 1-hour weekly clean ups of their community, and it quickly expanded into surrounding cities, was this his new passion. After signing up to take environmental studies in University, he would quickly realize that he was repeating his paste in tying his identity to just one thing. Now at the age of 20, he’s still making a difference in the world through continuing the PickWaste movement, but an even bigger impact by travelling throughout Canada to speak with students about how they too can turn their dreams into reality through Small Consistent Actions. His proof that no matter what age, or what hurdles you’ve had to overcome there is always an opportunity to learn and grow. For more information on Sam Demma you can follow him on social media:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sam_demma/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/samdemma99LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sam-demma/Website: https://samdemma.com/
This interview is a re-release interview I did on the Strength N Mind podcast with my friend Sam Demma. Sam is a former soccer player out of Canada who's injuries sidelined and ultimately cut his promising career short. He didn't let that affect the rest of his life. He put a theory his world issues teacher provided him and put it into practice. He later shared that story on the TEDxYouth@Toronto stage a year after. He created and founded Pickwaste with his friend Dillion Mendes, which rapidly became a top environmental movement in Canada, eclipsing 70 cleanups and over 850 trash bags filled. Sam was named a top 25 environmentalist under the age of 25. His mission now is to speak to youth through his own brand, helping them answer the question: "Can I make a difference?" Sam is just getting started. Listen in as we dive deep into his story surrounding soccer, his injuries, and what his purpose is now and going forward. I promise you, you will not want to miss this episode. In this episode I interview Sam Demma, a 19-year-old Canadian youth speaker, social entrepreneur & one of the top 25 under 25 environmentalists all throughout Canada. After building and scaling the social venture PickWaste to over 4 cities, filling 1000+ bags of litter and attaining national news coverage, Sam has become a very passion-driven, motivated speaker and entrepreneur. Sam and I talk about what it was like dropping out of school to pursue his passion, his driving philosophy in life, and how one of his teacher's drastically changed his trajectory.
Sam Demma is one of Canada's top 25 under 25 Environmentalist with his company “Pickwaste”. He picks up trash for a living… it may not seem as a glamourous journey into entrepreneurship, but it surely is just as important. The journey started by being inspired by his teacher in high school who taught him the lesson of “small consistent actions, can lead to massive global changes”. He walked back and forth from school until one day he decided he was going to pick up trash. Now he has held 70 clean up events and picked up over 700 bags of trash! He is a public speaker and his TedX talk will be releasing soon. PickWaste is a community initiative that was started out of the necessity to clean up mother earth. We make an impact by cleaning up local landscapes for one hour, once a week. It began as four young men but has quickly spread throughout the community. There are now over 200 people on our email list, and each week we clean up alongside 15-20 local volunteers. We are a team and a family, one that welcomes all members of any age. Today I speak to Sam Demma, Dillon Mendes, and Scott Berty! At PickWaste we know that nature and the vitality of the human species is one and the same. When we pollute Mother Nature, we are in turn causing much unnecessary suffering to ourselves.- The oceans we fill with chemicals is ultimately the water we will drink and the fish we will eat!- The air we pollute with greenhouse gases and smoke from industrial factories is ultimately the air that we will breathe in!- The soil we spray with pesticides and fertilizers is ultimately growing the vegetables and fruits that we will eat! This is why we believe there are so many diseases and degenerative conditions in today's society. This is why we're so passionate about PickWaste and saving the environment, and essentially saving all of humanity! We are big believers in starting small towards producing massive change, and there is no better way to start fixing this problem than by picking up trash. Garbage clean up is so simple, yet so effective.Simple because everyone can participate and there are no educational requirements. Effective because the law of social proof states that when people observe others partaking in any activity they will feel more inclined to join themselves! Its these little consistent actions that will change our planet.X-Navy Seal, William H. McRaven, said that if you do the little things right you can change your life, and then change the world. We believe that picking up garbage is the little thing that can change our community, and then the world will follow!- https://pickwaste.com/- https://samdemma.com/- https://www.linkedin.com/in/sam-demma/- https://www.linkedin.com/in/dillonmendes- https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottberty/Please do NOT hesitate to reach out to me on LinkedIn, Instagram, or via email mark@vudream.comLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-metry/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/markmetry/Twitter - https://twitter.com/markymetryMedium - https://medium.com/@markymetryFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/Humans.2.0.PodcastMark Metry - https://www.markmetry.com/Humans 2.0 Twitter - https://twitter.com/Humans2Podcast

This week on the Continual Growth podcast, our host Bwanka welcomes back special guest Sam Demma (appeared on Ep.19), and this time he's brought his business partner Dillon Mendes alongside with him. In this episode, we take a brief look back at the movement they've created which goes by the name 'PickWaste', what its all about, and the work they've been doing for it over the past year since launching. This one is full of youthful passion, which both these young men possess and look to leverage in hopes of transforming the world we live in today. Let's get right into it!
Sam Demma and Dillon Mendes started holding weekly trash pick-up events in their hometown of Pickering, Ontario. Now, a year later, they have a budding organization called PickWaste, where they are inspiring people of all ages to pick up one single piece of litter each day. They have both been named Top 25 Environmentalists in Canada and are dedicated to taking their message global. Show Notes: asustainablemind.com/055 Our Guest: PickWaste.ca
Welcome to The Social Impactors Podcast! Where we highlight impactful individuals making a positive social impact in their communities, and shares their stories/lessons to help others.
Sam Demma is an 18-year-old founder of an environmentally community-conscious organization, PickWaste in Toronto, Canada.PickWaste is a community initiative that was started out of the necessity to clean up mother earth. We make an impact by cleaning up local landscapes for one hour, once a week. It began as four young men but has quickly spread throughout the community. There are now over 200 people on our email list, and each week we clean up alongside 15-20 local volunteers. We are a team and a family, one that welcomes all members of any age. Listeners, this is a big one! I had the opportunity to meet Sam and Dillon, Founders of PickWaste, at the Enactus Nationals Expo and was more than willing to reconnect with them to chat over a cup of coffee. I was not prepared for the incredible amount of value that came out of this conversation. We spoke about everything from: making change, taking action, digital marketing, doing things differently, and much much much more! This is one for the books!
