Briton Tony Davies has pretty much seen it all when it comes to television sport broadcasting. With over 20 years' experience in broadcast TV as a director, producer and writer, Davies has made a number of documentaries, including the RTS-nominated A Bat and Ball War, and worked on numerous sports events including the FIFA World Cup, Rugby World Cup, Olympic Games, Paralympics, Asian Games, Wimbledon, Open Championship and Tour de France.His broadcast experience opened the door to event management roles, and Davies has worked as Broadcast Venue Manager on the past three Rugby World Cups. He was also the Broadcast Project Manager for the Special Olympics in 2019. During his early years, he worked on the legendary sports magazine show, Trans World Sport and his interviewed some of the biggest names in world sport, including Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali, Maradona, Pele, a 13-year-old Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Wayne Gretzky, Kip Keino and even Whitney Houston and John Candy.In this episode we talk about how commentators are chosen, the economics of sports broadcasting, how modern technology is changing how we watch sports and what the future holds in the digital age for viewers.Davies lives in Nelson, New Zealand, where he lives with his wife and six (yes, it's not a typo !) children. He enjoys a number of sports including cycling, running, boxing, hunting, fishing and paddling. Meet Andrew Hawkins, Senior Researcher for the Seven Network's coverage of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, and newest member of the SportsGrad "Circle of Grad" club - from follower to member and now podcast guest.Andrew's love of sport was sealed at nearly 10, watching the Sydney 2000 Olympics from ten minutes down the road. At 19, he mailed a handwritten letter to his broadcasting hero, Bruce McAvaney, asking how to break into the industry, and Bruce wrote back. Years later, the two would finally get on a call, and today they work side by side on Seven's Commonwealth Games broadcast: Andrew building the research, Bruce using it to call the Games. His first paid gig in sport was parking cars at Rosehill Racecourse, but it was writing that took him furthest. Andrew has since built an award-winning career in international horse racing - one of the most data-heavy sports on earth, spending five years in Hong Kong reporting for the South China Morning Post and the Hong Kong Jockey Club, with work syndicated around the world.Then came the hard part - being told, again and again, that all that experience only counted for racing. When he joined The SportsGrad Method, he'd applied for 50-odd jobs and landed just five interviews. It's the first major play since Sky bought the channel last year, and is aimed at converting casual viewers into paying subscribers. Sky TV's Head of Sport Content Gary Burchett told Heather du Plessis-Allan that sports rights aren't cheap, and the production itself can be “eye-wateringly” expensive. So, he says, they put value on their customers because their money is what allows them to actually acquire the rights and put on world-class rugby. Blaine Bishop sits down with me to talk about his fatherhood journey. He shares the values he and his wife, Cella look to teach their son, Chayce. Blaine shares the life lessons his son have taught him. After that we talk about his transition from college to the NFL. Blaine talks about what he is most proud of in his football career. Lastly, we finish the interview with the Fatherhood Quick Five.  About Blaine Bishop Blaine Bishop had a very successful 10-year career in the NFL. With the Oilers he became an anchor on the defense. Plus he is a fan favorite known as the “Hit-Man” because of his hard-hitting play. When the team moved to Nashville as the Tennessee Titans, Bishop and his accompanying defense took the team to new heights, becoming the pinnacle of NFL defenses. The eighth-round pick earned four Pro Bowls in his nine years with the Titans; helping the team win their first AFC Championship Game and advance to the Super Bowl. In addition, Bishop earned Pro-Bowl starts in 1995, 1996, 1997, and 2000 and a three-time All-Pro selection in 1995, 1996, and 2000. Bishop is still widely recognized as the NFL's premier hitting safety during his tenure with the Oilers/Tennessee Titans. Therefore, Bishop's NFL career will be remembered as one of perseverance and a work ethic that was admired not only by his team, but by his opponents. After retiring from his playing career, Bishop went straight into sportscasting.  He has a successful career starting at NewsChannel5, NFL Network and Titans Radio, and now on Nashville's “104.5 the Zone” where he can be heard as part of their Wake Up Zone Morning Show.
