If you listened to our previous episode, you should have an idea of the type of podcasts that you want to pitch yourself to as a guest. But how do you go about finding these shows? Luckily, there are a number of podcast databases and networks that allow you to search for shows, and pitch podcast hosts (or guests). For the second part of Summer Lovin' series, I'm bringing you an update of a previous episode where I reviewed four podcast databases - Podcast Hawk, Podcast Guests, PodMatch, and The Podcast Collaborative - with my friend and former colleague Kim Stewart. We describe how each service works, the different price points, what the user experience is like, and who we think will benefit from using them. This episode was really popular when we first released it in 2022, so I'm excited to revisit this topic and note any changes that I've noticed. Please note: I would always recommend that you prioritize building relationships with hosts and guests, as opposed to viewing a podcast appearance in purely transactional terms. But if you're just getting started guesting on podcasts, these services can give you a real jump-start. Topics covered include: An update on podcast matching services and things that I've noticed within the podcasting space The importance of finding community and building meaningful relationships with hosts, rather than seeing podcast opportunities as transactional Why using a Podcast Database can be good for Podcast Guests who don't have the time to research new shows - and how they can help Podcast Hosts to find guests Our reviews of four Podcast Databases - with pros and cons for Podcast Hawk, Podcast Guests, PodMatch, and The Podcast Collaborative A reminder of the benefits of appearing on so-called "small" shows Full show notes and resources: https://www.thepodwizegroup.com/podcast-databases-networking-sites-update

Recently I've been getting asked a lot of questions about podcast networks and databases - are they worth your time or money? Podcast databases are usually Software As A Service (or SAAS) products that allow you to search, network, and pitch podcast hosts (or guests). So because they keep coming up, and it's likely to be the kind of service that keeps on growing, I decided to take a closer look at them, along with Kim Stewart, our Account Exec here at The Podwize Group. We chose to review four podcast databases - Podcast Hawk, Podcast Guests, PodMatch, and The Podcast Collaborative. We describe how each works, the different price points, what the user experience is like, and who we think will benefit from using them. Full disclosure: although there are some definite benefits for this kind of service, I don't think any of them is going to change the way that we go about things at the Podwize Group. However, if you're just getting started guesting on podcasts, these services can give you a real jump-start. And the fact that most of them offer a free membership or a trial period for you to experiment and check out what is offered is a no-brainer to see what they can do for you. Topics covered include: What a podcast database is and isn't Why using a Podcast Database can be good for Podcast Guests who don't have the time to research new shows - and how they can help Podcast Hosts to find guests Our main issue with all of these services is how do you build meaningful relationships? “Rather than hire direct salespeople, you can accelerate your sales by going through a third party who's already got a customer base. They've already got that reach. Ray Blakney is known as “The Pajama Entrepreneur” and has started multiple 6 and 7-figure online businesses from the comfort of home. After realizing his high-paying software engineer job in Silicon Valley was leading to an endless, unmemorable corporate life, Ray quit to volunteer and pursue entrepreneurship. He now shares what he learned from all of those experiences as a speaker at conferences around the world and on podcasts. He and his businesses have been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur Magazine, The Boston Globe and other top publications. He's also just launched a new platform called “Podcast Hawk'' - a database that helps people get booked as a podcast guest. He's on The YES Effect show to talk about his journey from high-paying corporate job, to nearly broke, to living his dream life creating and running multiple million-dollar businesses. In this episode, you'll learn: The moment Ray knew to quit his corporate job Why so many people follow expectations rather than their desires Why most people are currently in their worst-case scenario The one mindset that separates the most successful people in the world from everyone else How Ray bounced back from businesses that didn't work The self-discovery that comes from starting a business How Ray invented Podcast Hawk and was able to include a listing of every podcast in the world The unexpected benefits of being a guest on a podcast Why it's not enough to just tell your story, you have to tell it over and over Quotables: “A lot of people have the challenge of ‘the life we're expected to live.'” “You are in your worst case scenario right now. What's ahead of you is possibly your best case scenario.” "When you try something and it doesn't work, as long as you learn something, you've succeeded.” “Entrepreneurship is this journey of self discovery every single day you're doing it.” “Most people are amazing, but most people don't think they're amazing. Until you think you are, you're not going to get to that next level.” Links mentioned in this episode: Ray Blakney's website: https://rayblakney.com/ Ray on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/raymond.blakney Ray on Twitter: https://twitter.com/rayblakney Podcast Hawk: https://podcasthawk.com/ Join The YES Effect Inner Circle Facebook Group for a behind the scenes experience about what it means to Believe, Belong and Become! If that's true, guest podcasting is the new guest blogging. If you were blogging anytime around the year 2000 to 2012, you would know that guest blogging was the number one way to get more exposure for your brand. There's a new audience, there are new eyes to find you for the first time.Today, content creation is a little different, but guest podcasting, in my opinion, is the number one way to get exposure for your brand. Learning languages is a great facet of travel: the chance to practice and experiment while you're actually there, in a new country, surrounded by its culture. People learn languages for all sorts of reasons, but travel is certainly one of them. Ray Blakney's Live Lingua language school gives language learners immersive opportunities, even from the comfort of their own home. In 2020, Ray started taking snapshots of their Spanish language course and recreating them as a free podcast, Learn Spanish with Live Lingua: 10 units of mini-lessons to get you started in conversing. Ray is here today to talk about how he put the podcast together, his strategy in doing so and how he's even been able to hack the podcast algorithms to bump his show up the charts. All while having batch-recorded the episodes and essentially putting it on auto-pilot. With the podcast up and running, Ray then turned his attention towards a new business startup: Podcast Hawk, an all-in-one system for searching, sorting and contacting podcasts on which you would like to be a guest. Whether you have your own podcast or not, guesting on shows is a tremendous way to share and fine tune your message and bring value to an audience. And as we discuss, if you do it enough, it's almost as if you have your own show after all! Interspersed through our conversation is the impact of travel and immersive experiences in both Ray and Ted's lives, as they have both learned 2nd languages as adults, traveled extensively, and never hesitate to promote the benefits of travel and discovery. Action Advice 6:42 - Immersing yourself in a language to quickly improve. 9:14 - On knowing when you're fluent enough in a language. 12:51 - How to batch-prepare hundreds of mini episodes. 13:56 - How mini episodes and re-uploading hacks the podcast algorithms. 20:13 - The merits of guesting on podcasts, even if you don't have your own podcast. 21:26 - If you are someone with many different projects and activities, and you can't have a podcast about each and every one, you could instead appear on podcasts that match those interests, and still have value to share. It's not a prerequisite to have your own show first. 22:21 - The social media and SEO advantage of being a guest. You appear on a show, and you get a free social media hit and backlinks. 23:41 - The unexpected benefits of frequent guesting: it really helps you fine-tune your message and cut out the fluff. You learn more about yourself and your identity, by talking it out. 28:22 - How to target the right podcasters to pitch yourself, gauging their downloads, engagement and impact, as it matches with where you're at in your business or project. Our guest today quit his job at a Fortune 500 company in the Silicon Valley to go work at a job that paid him $150/ month. Tune in to find out why! Episode Introduction: Our guest today is truly a man of many talents. Join us as we talk to Ray Blakney, a Filipino-American Entrepreneur, a bootstrapping genius, and owner of multiple seven-figure businesses as he shares his journey with us. Episode Summary: Ray Blakney walks us through his journey of being a multi-passionate entrepreneur, how he quit his six-figure job in the Silicon Valley, moved to Mexico, slept in his office for months, and then created a wildly successful digital business via Skype back in 2008 to now where he owns multiple seven-figure businesses, the challenges he faced and lessons he has learned along the way. Main Takeaways: Third Culture Child refers to a person whose parents are from two different cultures and the child themself is from a third, different culture. When you truly feel called to pursue something, you should go for it. If it doesn't work out, you can always come back to where you're currently at. For most businesses, bootstrapping is the most sustainable method to grow. Don't let the shiny object syndrome slow down the growth of your existing business. Continue to learn and drive your current business towards better opportunities. As a rule of thumb, ensure that you maintain a written record of all the communications so that there's a clear set of expectations on what each person's responsibility is. Fun Facts About Ray Blakney: Some of his favorite books are The Happiness Advantage by Shawn Achor, The Millionaire Next Door by Thomas J. Stanley, The Lean Startup by Eric Ries, and Traction by Gabriel W. and Justin M. Ray Blakney takes us on his journey being born in the Philippines, growing up mostly in Turkey, and then moving to the US for the end of high school and college. He reflects on feeling culturally out of place in the U.S., and more at home in other countries. Ray opens up about how he was on the traditional corporate path and abruptly chose to change his life course, join the Peace Corps, sell all his belongings and move to Chiapas, Mexico. He tells the story of how he met his wife in Mexico, got married, and started his first business with her—opening a school together with $2,000 in savings and sleeping on the floor of the school for the first 6 months. Ray then explains how and why he moved the business online and eventually scaled “Live Lingua” to 7-figures. He reflects on the multiple 6 and 7-figures businesses he has bootstrapped, and shares his tips on hiring and managing a fully-distributed team, building company culture in a remote business, executive leadership, and the most effective SEO tactics that are working today. Ray then shares his process for bootstrapping and scaling 6 and 7 figure businesses, how he launched and grew one of the top daily language learning podcasts, and explains his groundbreaking new business, “Podcast Hawk”. Finally, he shares how he optimizes his time and productivity, what his stress management techniques are, what Kendo means to him, and his path to becoming a semi-professional sword fighter.
