In 1940, with the Nazis sweeping through France, Henri Matisse found himself at a personal and artistic crossroads. His 42-year marriage had ended, he was gravely ill, and after decades at the forefront of modern art, he was beset by doubt. As scores of famous figures escaped the country, Matisse took refuge in Nice, with his companion, Lydia Delectorskaya. By defiantly remaining, Matisse was a source of inspiration for his nation. While enemy agents and Resistance fighters played cat-and-mouse in the alleyways of Nice, Matisse's son, Jean, engaged in sabotage efforts with the Allies. In Paris, under the swastika, Matisse's estranged wife, Amélie, worked for the Communist underground. His beloved daughter, Marguerite, active in the French Resistance, was arrested and tortured by the Gestapo, sentenced to Ravensbruck concentration camp—and miraculously escaped when her train was halted by Allied bombs. His younger, son, Pierre helped Jewish artists escape to New York; even his teenaged grandson risked his life by defying the Germans and their Vichy collaborators. Amidst this chaos, Matisse responded to the dark days of war by inventing a dazzling new paper technique that led to some of his most iconic pieces, including The Fall of Icarus, his profile of Charles De Gaulle, Monsieur Loyal, and his groundbreaking cut-out book, Jazz. His wartime works were acts of resistance, subtly patriotic and daringly new.Drawing on intimate letters and a multitude of other sources, Christopher C. Gorham illuminates this momentous stage of Matisse's life as never before in Matisse at War: Art and Resistance in Nazi Occupied France (Citadel Press, 2025), revealing an artist on a journey of reinvention, wrenching meaning from the suffering of war, and holding up the light of human imagination against the torch of fascism to create some of the most exciting work of his career, of the 20th century, and in the history of art. Guest: Christopher C. Gorham (he/him) is a lawyer, educator, and acclaimed author whose books include Matisse at War and the Goodreads Choice Award finalist, The Confidante. What if I told you that one of Queen Mary I's closest confidantes defied Queen Elizabeth I, became a leader of Catholic exiles in Spain, and even tried to influence the future of the English throne?    Meet Jane Dormer, Duchess of Feria—a woman who lived between two worlds: Tudor England and Catholic Spain. Loyal to Mary I until the end, Jane didn't fade into the background after Elizabeth's accession. Instead, she became a powerful figure in exile, opening her home to English Catholics, supporting the Jesuits, and working to shape Philip of Spain's policies towards England.   From the glamorous Tudor court to a life of exile, Jane's story is one of resilience, defiance, and faith. And despite immense personal loss, she never gave up her cause.   But how did a noblewoman from Buckinghamshire end up at the heart of Spain's Catholic resistance? And why did her efforts to influence England's future fail?   Discover the incredible, often-overlooked story of a woman who refused to be silenced.   Watch now to explore Jane Dormer's remarkable life and legacy!   #TudorHistory #JaneDormer #QueenMaryI #ElizabethanHistory #CatholicResistance #RoyalWomen #HiddenFigures #TudorCourt #HistoryTok #OnThisDay #WomenInHistory

Davos, with the aid of several co-conspirators, returns to his smuggling ways. When he comes clean to King Stannis and Melisandre they are really angry. Stannis prepares to take more than just a few fingers from Davos. However, Davos has what he hopes is an ace up his sleeve. Mackelly and Simon sure hope Davos knows what he's doing.Chapter Review:Davos Seaworth, and several trustworthy king's men, enter Maester Pylos' chambers. They ask for Edric Storm, and the maester tells Edric to listen to the King's Hand. The men take Edric to a boat. The boy tries to be brave but it becomes clear he's nervous and uncertain. Davos persuades him to get on the boat and Edric's cousin Andrew Estermont and several other men accompany Edric.Davos makes his way to the Painted Table to wait for Stannis and confess his treachery. When Stannis and Melisandre arrive they are arguing about whether Joffrey Baratheon is indeed dead. Melisandre saw it in her flames, but Stannis doesn't trust the accuracy of the flames. Davos confirms Melisandre's story. He's been told that Joffrey died during his wedding feast. With that, Melisandre feels the case has been proven for her work with Edric's blood and asks for the rest of the boy to wake the stone dragons and win Stannis his throne.Davos explains why that's not possible. Stannis is extremely disappointed with his Hand. Davos explains that, as Hand, it is his job to help the king protect his people. Edric is one of the king's people. When Stannis draws Lightbringer, Davos explains that he's learned to read and begins to read a letter. He hopes it'll be enough to save his life.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Davos Seaworth - The Onion Knight. Former Smuggler, Hand of the King to Stannis Baratheon.Stannis Baratheon - Lord of Dragonstone, rightful King of the Seven Kingdoms.Andrew Estermont - Cousin to Stannis and Edric.Melisandre - Red priestess of R'hllor. Every president, every leader, needs someone who they can trust. Who will tell them what is really happening, as opposed to telling them what they want to hear? In short, they need a confidante. Anna Rosenberg was one of the assistants whom FDR kept closest, not only in terms of policy, but as a friend. However, most biographies on FDR have largely ignored the role the high-ranking official played in helping to carry out the New Deal, win World War II and secure the peace afterwards. In this episode, high school history teacher Christopher Gorham explains how he stumbled on the story of Anna Rosenberg, and why so few contemporary biographers seem to have missed the influence of the first person to receive the presidential medal of freedom.Information on Christopher's book can be found at https://www.christophercgorham.comHe is on social media at https://twitter.com/ccgorhamSupport our show at https://patreon.com/axelbankhistory**A portion of every contribution is given to a charity for children's literacy** "Axelbank Reports History and Today" can be found on social media at https://twitter.com/axelbankhistory https://instagram.com/axelbankhistory

Davos speaks the truth to king Stannis and is rewarded with his freedom and a promotion. Melisandre uses the blood (not all of it, thankfully) of Edric Storm to curse the false kings: Joffrey Baratheon, Balong Greyjoy, and Robb Stark. Mackelly and Simon hope that Robb's string of bad luck is behind him.Chapter Review:Davos Seaworth is brought from the dungeons of Dragonstone by Axel Florent, the brother of his cellmate Alester. Florent shares that he has seen Stannis on the throne in the flames. But a precondition was that he, Axel, become Stannis' Hand of the King. If Davos supports Florent good things will follow, but woe betide Seaworth should he fail to.Stannis asks Davos what he thinks of Floernt's plan to invade Claw Isle as punishment for Lord Celtigar's decision to bend the knee to Joffrey. Davos, Stannis' spirit animal, cannot help himself and dismisses the plan as pointless and unfair. The men of Claw Isle fought and died for Stannis on the Blackwater, while victory would be assured, those people deserve better of their king. Stannis agrees, dismisses Florent and makes Davos his Hand of the King.Enter Melisandre with a plate of swollen leeches. The blood comes from Edric Storm, Robert's bastard son, who is already much beloved within Dragonstone. The three leeches go in the flames each with a curse for Joffrey Baratheon, Balon Greyjoy, and Robb Stark.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Davos Seaworth - The Onion Knight.
