Air Week: January 5-11, 2026 1946: Jukebox Rhythm Review, Pt. 2 The “Juke In The Back” once again puts our old Rockola Jukebox in the forefront as we spotlight the biggest Rhythm & Blues jukebox hits of 1946. This week, in part 2, we’ll focus on the second half of the year, featuring three #1s from Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five. During 1946, Jordan held the top spot on the Race Record Chart for an incredible 35 weeks. The King Cole Trio scores one of their most memorable hits, “(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons,” which tops the Pop Chart, but only makes it to #3 R&B. The Ink Spots continue to dominate, but like Nat “King” Cole, they’re scoring bigger Pop Hits. Jay McShann tells us about his “Voodoo Woman Blues,” while Roosevelt Sykes takes us down that “Sunny Road.” T-Bone Walker, Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup and Julia Lee make appearances as well as Bull Moose Jackson, who makes his first chart appearance in the middle of 1946 for Queen Records. Rhythmus spielt in unserem Leben eine wahnsinnig große Rolle, finden Emma (15) und Christoph (18). Und deswegen dreht sich in dieser Folge vom »Elbphilharmonie Kopfhörer« alles um Rhythmus – im Leben und in der Musik. Dazu gehören der Puls unseres Herzschlags und der Sekunden-Takt; aber auch unsere Sprache hat einen Rhythmus, unser Alltag und Tagesablauf sowieso. Und in der Musik ist der Rhytmus die Grundlage für alles andere. Er ordnet Melodien, er bestimmt den Groove. Oft übernimmt zum Beispiel das Schlagzeug diese Rolle und gibt einer Band den Puls vor.  Aber manchmal verschmelzen Rhytmus und Melodie auch – wie zum Beispiel bei der Musik von Louie's Cage Percussion. Die acht Musiker der österreichischen Gruppe spielen nämlich unter anderem mit so genannten Boomwhackers. »Die sehen so ein bisschen aus wie die Stange vom Staubsauger«, meint Emma. Und das stimmt: Boomwhackers sind stabile Kunststoff-Röhren in unterschiedlichen Längen und Farben. Im Gespräch mit dem Ensemble-Mitglied Maximilian Thummerer erfahren Emma, Christoph und Moderatorin Anne, warum die Röhren unterschiedliche Tonhöhen haben und wie man am Ende damit ganze Stück spielen kann – und zwar Pop-Hits genauso wie bekannte Orchesterwerke. Wer das nicht glauben will, kann sich am 14./15. Juni beim Funkelkonzert »Boomtastic« im Großen Saal selbst davon überzeugen.

Langsam aber sicher beginnt das Herz immer höher zu schlagen. Am Samstag ist es so weit: In Basel geht der «Eurovision Song Contest 2025» über die Bühne. Heute gibt es daher zur Einstimmung in der «Fiirabigmusig» locker-flockige Chormusik, darunter auch den einen oder anderen ESC-Song. Chöre singen gerne beliebte Ohrwürmer. Dabei bedienen sie sich auch in anderen Musikgenres. So werden Evergreens aus dem Schlagerbereich oder Pop-Hits oft kurzerhand mit einem Chorsatz versehen. In dieser «Fiirabigmusig» sind viele beliebte Melodien im «Chorkleid» zu hören. Dazu gehören Schlagermelodien wie «Rote Lippen soll man küssen», «Mein kleiner grüner Kaktus» oder der Reinhard Mey-Klassiker «Über den Wolken». Auch ESC-Songs dürfen nicht fehlen: So singt der Männerchor «Les gais Compagnons du Guillon» Celine Dions Siegertitel «Ne partez pas sans moi». Der Kinderchor «Petit choeur de terre sainte» stimmt den ABBA-Klassiker «Waterloo» an. Und auch den letztjährigen Siegertitel von Nemo gibts in einer Chorversion. Die Singknaben der St. Ursenkathedrale Solothurn haben «The Code» auf ihrer neusten CD verewigt.
