How annuals make it to your gardenWhat makes one petunia thrive all summer long while another fizzles out? Why are certain plants chosen to become the season's top sellers? In this episode of the CLG Podcast from Canada's Local Gardener, host Shauna Dobbie speaks with Glenn Andersen of Nordic Nurseries — the exclusive Proven Winners annuals propagator for Western Canada — to uncover the journey plants take from lab to landscape.Glenn shares what it means to be a propagator, how new plants are selected from thousands of trials, and why Proven Winners varieties consistently outperform others in the garden. He talks about the rigorous breeding process, the global supply chain of cuttings, and what makes a plant worthy of the Proven Winners name. You'll hear practical insights on how to grow thriving containers, what shade really means in gardening, and which low-maintenance plants work best for pollinators. From the popularity of Supertunia Vista Bubblegum and Prince Tut papyrus to the pollinator-magnet Cuphea Vermillionaire, Glenn offers suggestions based on firsthand experience in his own home garden. This episode is packed with garden inspiration and expert knowledge, plus a few surprising tips — like why caladiums don't always love Canadian summers, and why non-flowering shade baskets are flying off shelves.Whether you're a backyard hobbyist or a container gardening enthusiast, you'll come away with a better understanding of what goes into the plants you love — and how to choose varieties that truly perform.Tune in to learn more about plant breeding, pollinator-friendly gardening, and the behind-the-scenes world of wholesale nurseries — all from a distinctly Canadian perspective.Support the show

There are many gardeners who have clay soil. Most lament that fact but Proven Winners says you can learn to love it, it just takes a bit of knowledge and a bit of elbow grease. What IS clay soil? It's sticky and absorbs water slowly, when it dries out it can be crusty, lumpy and hardpacked. So far not lovin' it. HOWEVER... learn WHY clay soil can be a good thing, especially in drought. Who'd a thunk it?

Since Covid first began and work from home became a part of everyday life, the US has seen a surge in new homeowners. Many have fled higher-priced areas with smaller spaces in search of larger homes with more space and property. For those who have moved into new homes, over 55% did work in their landscape. Whether to put in a new landscape from scratch, update an existing one or just adding a few touches to make it their own. When it comes to the workhorse of the landscape, the plants that balance the yard, provide year-round interest and texture, it's the "shrub" that brings it all together. For the new homeowner and existing landscapes alike, finding the right shrubs to reflect your design preference and color choices can be a pretty daunting task.So we've asked Stacey Hirvela, horticultural marketing expert for Proven Winners Color Choice Shrubs, what she thinks make the best shrubs for the new homeowner. One great place to start is the Proven Winners guide, Gardening Simplified with tons of great tips, pictures and information for adding shrubs to your landscape.CONNECT WITH OUR GUESTStacey Hirvela at Proven Winners - Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.CONNECT WITH USEnjoy this episode or have questions? This week on Down the Garden Path podcast, landscape designers Matthew Dressing and Joanne Shaw take a look at salvias and speedwells, the colourful and resilient staples of the perennial garden. Tune in and learn more about how to include salvias and speedwells in your garden. Perennial Salvias (also known as “sage”) are a must-have for the garden border, blooming early summer to autumn! Planted in the spring, these aromatic beauties are great for cutting and beloved by bees and butterflies. They are drought-tolerant, too. Surprisingly, they are in the mint family and also related to the kitchen herb, garden sage. They grow well across many zones and are available in different shades of purple, pink and white. As an added bonus, they stay upright without splitting in the center. Matt and Joanne discuss: The growing conditions: soil, temperature, zones, lighting and watering Blooming: type, when and for how long and the colours Use and value to the perennial garden Cultivars of note for each plant The Color Spires and Profusion series from Proven Winners. Speedwell (Veronica) is an easy-to-grow perennial with long tall spikes of small petals in different shades of blue, purple, pink, or white. Speedwells are a little shorter than salvias and some varieties are even prostrate, offering more of a ground cover. Matt and Joanne discuss: The growing conditions: it grows best in full sun and best be deadheaded to extend bloom The Magic Show series from Proven Winners Enjoy past perennial Down the Garden Path podcast episodes: Intro to Perennials Perennials: Peonies Perennials: Groundcovers Perennials: Ornamental Grasses Perennials: Attracting Beneficial Insects Shade: Beyond the Hosta About Your Hosts Each week on Down The Garden Path podcast, professional landscape designers Joanne Shaw and Matthew Dressing discuss down-to-earth tips and advice for your plants, gardens and landscapes.
