Angela Ferraro Fanning built and runs the Axe and Root Homestead in New Jersey. After suffering from postpartum depression, Angela wanted to remove herself from modern day hustle culture and return to nature, growing as much of her own food as possible. She grew from her own private garden to a fully functioning farm, and shares the empowerment that comes along with homesteading with our audience today. Sitting down with Emma and Mary in this follow-up to her original episode “Homesteading is What You Make It”, we catch up with Angela's progress in running her farm a few years later after she was certified as a permaculturist by Cornell University. Angela shares insights about the evolution of her farm, managing a variety of plants and animals, and implementing permaculture principles into her lifestyle. She talks about publishing her books “The Sustainable Homestead” and the “Little Homesteader” series , growing protein-rich crops as a vegetarian, and raising a family on a farm. She leaves us all with why she believes it is vitally important to remember the legacy we leave for the people who take over the land after we're gone. My guest this episode is urban smallholder Sara Ward. Sara runs Hen Corner, a backyard smallholding in London. Her website Hen Corner has a wealth of information on growing and making food, she runs courses, sells products from her bakery and has just published a book ‘Living the Good Life in the City'. I began by asking Sara what prompted her to follow in the wellieprints of Barbara Good. Dr Ian Bedford's Bug of the Week: Gardening for Nature What We Talk About  What prompted Sara to set up Hen Corner How much can you grow in your average urban garden? Keeping animals Getting rid of waste from the garden Preserving food Looking after things when you're away About Living the Good Life in the City Sara Ward has transformed her Victorian terraced house in London into an urban smallholding, ‘Hen Corner', and in Living the Good Life in the City she shares some of the ways she and her family have brought city and country together, and shows that you, too, can make a difference to how you live and the food you eat. Divided into sections covering Make, Grow, Preserve, Keep and Celebrate, Living the Good Life in the City is packed full of recipes, stories, tips and tricks including baking bread, making your own jam, pasta, sausages and cheese, keeping bees and livestock, preserving, foraging, harvesting and celebrating with food. It's officially summer, meaning that many of you might be spending a lot of time in the front or backyard, caring for your lawn. There are many different ways to go about lawncare, some of which require more resources than others, like water, fertilizers, and pesticides. But there are also more eco-friendly sustainable ways to grow a lawn. Michele Bakacs and Amy Rowe, Rutgers associate professors and extension agents, join to give us tips for lawncare and take your calls and questions. Here are some sustainable landscaping resources that our guests shared with us: Rutgers Organic Land Care website Frequently Asked Questions About Native Plants National Wildlife Federation Keystone Plants by Ecoregion Supporting Bees in Your Garden and on Your Farm Incorporating Native Plants Into Your Residential Landscape   Don't guess! Hey, y'all! Join me on the porch today for a chat about wards, what they have to do with boundaries, and other practical lessons from our little farm. This land has assuredly given me some valuable lessons, but one of these I wasn't prepared for: diligent weeding lessens the need for strident warding! As with any other witchcraft lesson, it's all in the balance—and anything warded up too tight can suffocate vibrant growth. Careful research can often lessen the need for formidable wards, which is a good thing in both the Craft and gardening. After all, if we know the risks, we can make better choices! Snuggle in—this one is a bit long.
