A lot of organisations have had to pivot like crazy to keep their artists in work, during and since lockdown. That includes Pacific Dance New Zealand, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Planned live events had to hit the dust, so instead PDNZ has invited 10 artists to film half-hour shows reflecting on traditional Pacific dance forms. The Transform Series has just started to be rolled out, to coincide with when the organisation had scheduled a dance festival. Iosefa Enari, founder and director of Pacific Dance NZ, was awarded a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Pacific Dance in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours. Lynn Freeman asked him about his childhood dance memories.
This September marks the 25th Going West Writers Festival, though it won't be the big public birthday bash the organizers had planned. Instead, they've been poring through the archives to create an 18-week-long podcast series of highlights - conversations, performances and poetry. The first one's just been been published. The Festival's co-founder and current chair is Naomi McCleary, who received a MNZM in the Queen's Birthday Honours for services to the arts. She tells Lynn Freeman they were very reluctant to pull the plug on the live event.

Devon Polaschek is a forensic clinical psychologist, professor of psychology, and Joint Director of the New Zealand Institute for Security and Crime Science at the University of Waikato. She studies high-risk violent offenders in prisons and on parole and has done research that found intensive psychological treatment and early release on parole was more effective at reducing reoffending among high-risk prisoners than serving out full prison sentences. In the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honours, Polaschek was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to criminal psychology. Dame Stephanie Shirley is tech pioneer, entrepreneur and philanthropist. She also goes by the name "Steve" which she used to sign business letters to potential clients when they were not responding to her. If you haven't already, go and watch her Ted Talk it is funny and moving and super interesting to hear what it was like being a woman in tech during the 60s.In 1939 Steve arrived in Britain unaccompanied, as child refugee during the war, and when she was 29 she started what became her multimillion-pound IT software consultancy, from which she made a £150m fortune - on her dining room table with £6 in 1962. She retired in 1993 to concentrate on philanthropic work, since then she has given away at least £65 million via her charity Shirley Foundation. She continues to give to a range of causes including autism research, a cause she was drawn to through her late son Giles who had autism. Rosalind "Roz" Savage MBE FRGS (born 23 December 1967) is an English ocean rower, environmental advocate, writer and speaker.[1] She holds four Guinness World Records for ocean rowing, including first woman to row solo across three oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian.[2] She has rowed over 15,000 miles, taken around 5 million oarstrokes, and spent cumulatively over 500 days of her life at sea in a 23-foot rowboat. She was awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the Queen's Birthday Honours 2013 for services to environmental awareness and fundraising. She was awarded an honorary degree (Doctor of Laws) from Bristol University in 2014. Roz Savage is a United Nations Climate Hero,[3] a trained presenter for the Climate Reality Project, and an Athlete Ambassador for 350.org.[4] She is on the board of Adventurers and Scientists for Conservation,[5] and a Blue Ambassador for the UK-based BLUE Project. She promotes plastic-free communities as co-patron of the Greener Upon Thames campaign for a plastic bag free Olympics in 2012, and as a Notable Coalition Member of the Plastic Pollution Coalition.[6] She also supports the work of the 5 Gyres Institute,[7] and is an Ambassador for Plastic Oceans[8] and MacGillivray Freeman's One World One Ocean project.
