Sam Newman, Mike Sheahan and Don Scott - 'You Cannot Be Serious'

David Mann AM December 17, 2023 marks 50 years at 3AW for David Mann. Mann is potentially the longest serving person at a single radio station, and perhaps also for the multiple roles he has held there either full time, part time, or now as Mann About Town. Mann started as an office boy just before Christmas in 1973, before being promoted to panel operator, then given a journalism cadetship. The cadetship led to an on air role for two decades. He also was production manager, creative director and the promotions and marketing manager for 23 years, holding other positions such as Chairman of the Victorian Radio Time Club. During the Ash Wednesday fires in 1983 3AW dropped all regular programming and used their immediacy to offer on the spot assistance. A fundraiser that followed, which Mann was heavily involved in, raised more than $1 million to distribute to people who had been left with nothing.   Mann also supports people during and after disasters in an operational capacity with more than three decades of service to the Melbourne Metropolitan Fire Brigade, Ambulance Victoria and the Victorian Police Force. He was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2006 for “service to the community through a range of police, nursing, heritage and emergency services organisations” and in June 2018 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). This year also marks the 35th that Mann has been a volunteer part of the Pensioners Christmas Party, conducted every Christmas day and looking after senior citizens and single parents. Mann said: “When the world is bad, radio is good. The 3AW team, listeners and sponsors make a difference to those in need. It's still one of the most powerful mediums around and I'm very proud to be a part of the number one station in Melbourne.”

Really Interesting Women - the podcastEpisode 132Melissa Doyle AMMel Doyle is so much more than 'an accomplished and awarded journalist with more than 30 years experience'. She's actually one of the best-known and trusted voices and faces in Australian media. And after our conversation for this podcast, it's pretty easy to see why. Mel is, of course, best known as the former co-host of the number one rated breakfast program Sunrise. But it's the beginnings of these careers that are just as interesting to me. What was the first break? How did that come about? And it came about when a recently graduated 20 year old Mel Doyle kept pestering a producer in Canberra to give her a go at presenting the weather on TV. She created her own opportunity. And that was something she did a lot. And more importantly, grabbed those opportunities when they did present themselves. 'What's the worst that can happen?'After 25 very successful years with Channel 7, she was let go. Its happened to most of us, but not in such a public forum. Her response was not only dignified and done with head held high, it was a catalyst for an incredible 'second act'. She has written four books, “The Working Mothers Survival Guide” in 2007, her best selling memoir “Alphabet Soup” in 2013, "15 Seconds of Brave" in 2022 and "How to Age Against The Machine" in 2023.  In the 2016 Australia Day Honours List Mel was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her "significant service to the community through representational roles with a range of charitable groups, and to the broadcast media."She is National Patron for the Make A Wish Foundation and an Ambassador for World Vision, The Alannah and Madeline Foundation, The Children's Hospital at Westmead and Adopt Change.Head to the link in my bio to have a listen to our podcast chat. You'll find her books here:https://www.amazon.com.au/s?k=melissa+doyle&ref=nb_sb_nossImage: Nick LearyVisit instagram @reallyinterestingwomen for further interviews and posts of interesting women in history. ‘If the door is closed, climb through the window'. That's the message from board recruitment specialist and director, Bernadette Uzelac, who has been made a member of the Order of Australia (AM), for significant service to the community of the Barwon Southwest region in Victoria. Growing up in Geelong, Bernadette was married with a baby and selling Mary Kay products by the time she was 18. Three years later she had completed a commerce degree and welcomed her second child. By the 1980s, driven by a hunger to put her own stamp on something, Bernadette started her own recruitment business - despite having no experience. “I jumped off that great big cliff face into the black hole,” she tells Claire Braund in this podcast. “I had four weeks of annual leave payments, borrowed some money from my father to buy furniture, rented an office and waited for the phone to ring.” Today Bernadette is an accomplished CEO, entrepreneur and business leader who sits on the Board of the Geelong Cemetery Trust, and was the first female president of the Geelong Business Club in its 50 year history . In this podcast, Bernadette discusses the changing landscape of recruitment - from the ‘wild west' of the 80s to today's focus on gender-equitable practices and avoiding unconscious bias - and the increasing role of AI in the recruitment space. Avril Henry in her own words, is a perfect example of what you can do when you're willing to work hard and have someone who believes in you. Growing up in social housing in a low income family in a mining town in South Africa, at the height of apartheid, Avril was an “English speaking girl who was not expected to amount to anything”. In 2024 Avril - a recognised and awarded expert on leadership, diversity in the workplace, change management, and employee performance - was made a Member of the Order of Australia AM for significant service to business consultancy, project management and to women.  “Where I came from was grounded in a background of inequity, which is why my life's work has always been about levelling the playing field - whether you're old or young, female, a migrant or an indigenous person,” Avril tells Claire in this podcast. Avril arrived in Australia in 1980 with a degree in accounting and economics from the University of Cape Town, with “two suitcases, $500 and a dream” - to live freely in a democratic society.   Since arriving in Australia  Avril has had a long and varied and interesting career in finance and HR in South Africa, the UK, USA and Australia before setting up her own consultancy in 2003. An internationally-acclaimed keynote speaker and provocateur who is passionate about transforming leadership models, building diversity capabilities and reforming outdated workplace practices.  In this podcast Avril talks about what motivated her to leave the corporate world and strike out on her own, her quest for fairness and equity and the challenges organisations face around diversity and inclusion. An early entrant into the school of diversity, Avril has since forged a big reputation around linking diversity and inclusivity to leadership capability and financial outcomes, and says one of her proudest achievements was being part of the history-making Westpac team in 1995 who introduced paid maternity leave. In this podcast Avril discusses the need to up the ante on gender pay equity and “antiquated” recruitment techniques. “We are making progress, but it needs to be much quicker.” “When diversity and inclusion first  made it onto the executive and board agenda people talked about diversity and inclusion being for minority groups. I was the first person to come along and say, hold on, if women make  up 52% of the population and people from multicultural  backgrounds make up 53% of the population, and people with disabilities make up 20% of the population, you're  actually not talking about minority groups, you're actually talking about major parts of society and the workforce.”   Podcast host: Claire Braund Women on Boards (WOB) is an independent and action-oriented organisation founded in 2006 by Claire Braund and Ruth Medd, with a proud history of supporting women to leverage their professional skills and experience into leadership and non-executive-director roles.  Join or Subscribe to Women on Boards

Associate Professor Ngaire Elwood AM is driven by a strong sense of purpose that grew out of a life-changing experience that inspired her, as an inquisitive science-loving teenager, to dedicate her life to improving therapies for kids with cancer.  As a teenager, she was treated for osteosarcoma, a common form of bone cancer that had a survival rate of about five per cent prior to the advent of chemotherapy. After her bone cancer diagnosis, her treatment involved an above-knee amputation, followed by 18 months of high-dose chemotherapy. Even with this ‘aggressive therapy' the survival rate is about 60 per cent. Now she is helping others survive cancer as head of the Cord Blood Stem Cell Research Program at Murdoch Children's Research Institute and director of Melbourne's cord blood bank. She has devoted her career to investigating, developing and providing improved therapies for the treatment of cancer, leukaemia and other disorders and is passionate about the therapeutic application of cellular therapies.  Her research includes exploring the different types of stem cells that are in cord blood, investigating the use of cord blood in heart repair and the treatment of cerebral palsy, and improving the use of cord blood in bone marrow transplants for treating blood cancers and other diseases. Ngaire was made a Member of the Order of Australia AM in the 2024 Australia Day Honours awards for significant service to medicine, particularly through stem cell research - an honour she tells Claire Braund was a “bit surreal” and that it is important as a female researcher and amputee to use the platform as a voice for women in STEMM, people living with disabilities and also to raise the awareness of cord blood therapies in Australia.  In this podcast Ngaire also talks about the development of cord blood research around the world and in Australia - “it's a really exciting time… there's so much we don't yet know and understand about cord blood biology and its benefits and ind it's really fun to find out” -  as well as her board career and what skills and qualities medical scientists can bring to the board table, including strategic thinking, grant-writing, risk management and big picture thinking. “It's knowing that the work you do makes a difference and can make a difference no matter how small the role may be. Whether it's as a research assistant, student or a board member. Everybody plays a role and can make a difference,” she tells Claire. About Ngaire Elwood: Associate Professor Ngaire Elwood AM, PhD BSc(Hons) MAICD, is an experienced senior leader. She has devoted her career to investigating, developing and providing improved therapies for the treatment of cancer, leukaemia and other disorders and is passionate about the therapeutic application of cellular therapies. Ngaire has broad governance expertise, and holds a diverse board portfolio. She is the immediate past Vice President of the international Board of Directors for the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapies (FACT), Non-Executive Director on the Boards of the National Stem Cell Foundation of Australia and international Cord Blood Association, and previous Chair of the Board for the Australian Sickle Cell Advocacy Inc (ASCA). She was previously the Australia New Zealand (ANZ), Regional Vice President for the International Society for Cell & Gene Therapy (ISCT) and is a member of the ISCT Board of Directors (2018-2020; 2022-2024). She is Chair of the FACT Education Committee, is a FACT Cord Blood Bank Inspector and sits on the FACT Cord Blood Accreditation Committee, FACT Cord Blood Standards Committee, FACT Regenerative Medicine Task Force and the FACT New Business Development Committee. Ngaire serves as Chair of the AusCord network of public cord blood banks and is a member of the TGA Advisory Committee on Biologicals. As Director of the BMDI Cord Blood Bank, a TGA-licensed manufacturing facility, Ngaire has extensive expertise in GMP, regulatory compliance and quality management. Welcome to Season Five of Countermelody! While I indulge in a much-needed break for the month of January (my first in four years!), I have asked a number of Countermelody fans and listeners to provide spoken introductions to some of their favorite episodes from the first three seasons of the podcast. Today conductor Brian Castles-Onion introduces an episode from June 2020, as we neared the height of the pandemic and the panic surrounding it. It is an interview with Ira Siff, artistic director of La Gran Scena Opera Company di New York, alter ego of the beloved “traumatic soprano” Vera Galupe-Borszkh, lecturer for the Metropolitan Opera Guild and Weekly Commentator on the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts. So much has changed for everyone since the interview was recorded in January 2020, most poignantly (as relates to this episode) the death of our beloved Chic Walker (who portrayed Dame Emily Post-Morddum and Alfredo Sorta-Pudgi in La Gran Scena) on 11 April 2022; and the passing of Renata Scotto on 16 August 2023. My association with Ira Siff and La Gran Scena Opera Company di New York goes back more than thirty years, when Ira provided me with my first employment as a professional singer when my alter ego Daniela della Scarpone sang for two years with the renowned travesty opera company. I sat down with Ira in his East Village apartment in January 2020 for a wide-ranging interview in which we discuss his early days as a standee at the old Met (where some of his opera-going experiences included Maria Callas's final Tosca performances, Renata Scotto's 1965 debut as Madama Butterfly, and Leonie Rysanek's wild traversals of Verdi and Wagner). He discusses his first performing experiences in the early 1970s in association with Al Carmines and others, the genesis of La Gran Scena and their development into a worldwide phenomenon, and his subsequent “legitimate” career as lecturer, stage director, vocal coach and voice teacher and commentator all stemmed from in his words, “getting in a dress and singing soprano,” which he dubs “the strangest part.” This is a free-wheeling and extremely Opera Queeny interview, peppered with Ira's unique anecdotes and snippets from Gran Scena (and other!) performances. Today's guest host Brian Castles-Onion is one of Australia's most exciting and well-known opera conductors. Completing his tertiary studies at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music, his outstanding achievements speak for themselves. He has worked at New York's Metropolitan Opera, the Julliard School of Music and the Rossini Festival in Italy, and has held the position of Artistic Director of Canterbury Opera in New Zealand. He currently continues his long run association with Opera Australia. His conducting experience includes well over five hundred opera performances throughout Australia, Asia and New Zealand alone. He was on the podium for Opera Australia's 40th Anniversary Gala and 60th Anniversary Gala, The Robert Allman Farewell Gala and conducted the Dame Joan Sutherland State Memorial Service – which was broadcast internationally on television and radio. His book Losing the Plot in Opera has been a Best Seller in Australia and the UK. Brian became a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2017 Australia Day Honours List. Today's interviewee and subject, Ira Siff, is a native New Yorker, who grew up on the standing room line of the old Metropolitan Opera, worshiping the famous singers of the 60's. A graduate of the Cooper Union, with a degree in Fine Arts, Mr. Siff began to study voice, and made his debut as a tenor in 1970. For the next decade, he performed roles in opera, operetta and musicals in New York, at The New York Shakespeare Festival, Circle in the Square, Playwrights Horizons, and many other venues. Turning to cabaret, Ira created an act using vocal parody of opera, jazz, and other styles of music, gaining critical acclaim, and a loyal following. In 1981, he founded La Gran Scena Opera Company di New Yor...

Tommy Emmanuel was a working professional age of 6, playing rhythm guitar in his family's band as they toured Australia.   He has never had a formal guitar lesson, in fact, he doesn't read music or know music theory. However, he's considered one of the modern masters of the guitar, with Chet Atkins naming Tommy as a Certified Guitar Player, an honour bestowed to only 4 other people.   Tommy's guitar skills grew from natural talent and decades of practice. His playing incorporates a multitude of musical influences and styles, including jazz, blues, bluegrass, folk and rock, this type of country finger-style playing is at the core of his technique.   After years as a popular sideman and songwriter, the two-time ARIA Award winner launched his solo career in 1988 with Up from Down Under. As a solo performer, he never plays to a set list and uses a minimum of effects onstage. He usually completes studio recordings in one take and has released a total of 37 albums.   A four-time winner of Australia's Best Guitarist Award, Tommy has been nominated for 2 Grammy awards, won 4 Country Music Awards and was inducted into the Australian Roll of Renown in 2011. Tommy won Australian performer of the year in 1994 and 1996, and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2010.

Christianity and Islam are the two biggest religions on the globe, accounting for just over half the world's population combined. Most of us know about the religion we belong and too often learn about other religions from the actions of extreme fundamentalists, mediated by the news, and by politics. In this episode we go back to basics, to find out what Christianity and Islam actually believe. What are the essential building blocks of their theology? What do you need to believe as true? What is god, what is a soul, and what happens after death? And what exactly is the promise of the religion, whether it's salvation or eternal life, and how do you achieve it?The stakes are incredibly high when it comes to theology. Countless wars have been fought in the name of christianity and islam, both between these religions and between different sects within them. And whilst there are considerable overlaps which we will explore in this episode, there are also irreconcilable differences, differences not in mere preferences and values, but in the claim to the absolute truth of the nature of the universe, our place in it, the laws of how to live, our path to salvation and our purpose in life. In this episode of Looking Outside we look closer at the numbers and what they are telling us, exploring the predictive human powers of Demographics. For this we chat with fellow Aussie, Bernard Salt, Founder & Executive Director of The Demographics Group. As a well known personality, famous for injecting a bit of humor into his public speaking events and newspaper columns, Bernard shares his philosophy on presenting the numbers in a way that is engaging and compelling. He speaks to how to establish the facts, make a strong case, demonstrate your credibility … and be bold enough to have a bit of fun with it. Demographics is a field anchored in sociology, and the numbers, charts, tables of figures are boring standalone; it's the narrative they tell you about people that's interesting. Jo and Bernard discuss the importance of letting the numbers form a story about people, and then sharing that through a compelling narrative that “reaches back in time” and presents future opportunities in context. Bernard also shares his personal experience presenting numbers to senior leaders, or ‘sharks circling the water', how he formed the self-confidence to brave this as someone from a small country town, and his observations of the changing lifestyle and culture of Australians. -- To look outside Bernard focuses on popular culture. When changes happen they don't just show up in the figures but in culture around us, and small actions observed in public can be telling about individual, collective and expressed value shifts. People watching can “speak volumes” about where communities are and where they are headed. -- Bernard Salt is an Australian business advisor, corporate speaker and newspaper columnist.  Bernard has had a long career in corporate consulting mostly as a Partner with KPMG Australia. He founded KPMG Demographics (2002) where he popularized the use of demographics to interpret future business and consumer trends.  He has written 6 popular https://www.amazon.com/Bernard-Salt/e/B001K87NUG?ref=sr_ntt_srch_lnk_1&qid=1666728766&sr=1-1 (books) (2002-2014), hosted a TV show (The Next Five Years 2017-2019) on SkyNews Business, hosted a popular podcast series (What Happens Next 2020-2021), currently writes 2 weekly columns in The Australian newspaper (one since 2002), and for 20 years has delivered more than 100 corporate presentations per year across Australia, New Zealand and beyond including the US. He uses long-term (mostly UN) datasets to show megatrends like the rise of the consumption era (1990-2020) and the advent of the baby bust (2020s) on a country by country basis.  He has invented acronyms to describe social trends like pumcins (professional urban middle class in nice suburbs) and VESPAs (virus escapees seeking provincial Australia/America).  His 2016 column on smashed avocado went viral globally. Bernard is founder and executive director of The Demographics Group (http://www.tdgp.com.au/ (www.tdgp.com.au)).  He was an adjunct professor at Curtin University Business School 2011-2020, a board member of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) 2014-2018, appointed a member of the Council (board) of the National Museum of Australia in March 2022.  He was made a member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2017 for his services to demographics. -- Looking Outside is a podcast dedicated to exploring fresh perspectives of familiar business topics.   Today's guest wears a lot of impressive hats: Former Socceroo | Broadcaster | Adjunct Professor, Sport & Social Responsibility | Author | and Human Rights Activist Who else could this be but Craig Foster AM? Following a decorated football career as Australia's 419th Socceroo and 40th Captain, Craig has become one of Australia's most respected sports people as a broadcaster, social justice advocate, and human rights campaigner. Craig represented Australia in the Junior National Team at age 15 in the first FIFA Under 16 World Cup in China, 1985 where he was selected in the FIFA Team of the Tournament. He would later go on to represent Australia at senior level on 29 occasions including as Captain. Following retirement, he quickly became one of Australia's most respected sports broadcasters with an 18-year, triple Logie-winning career with Australia's multicultural broadcaster, Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) as part of The World Game (TWG) team which included five FIFA World Cups and four FIFA Women's World Cups as well as the UEFA Champions League, English Premier League and domestic competitions. He is a vocal supporter of a higher humanitarian intake by Australia and particularly an increased intake for Afghan refugees. A smidgen of his relevant humanitarian work efforts includes being: A member of the Australian Multicultural Council under the Department of Home Affairs, Immigration and Citizenship division An Ambassador for Amnesty Australia, the Affinity Intercultural Foundation, and Addison Road Community Centre including their #RacismNotWelcome campaign for Local Councils across Australia, Pushing Barriers, an Australia Committee member with Human Rights Watch, Advisory Council member of the Australian Human Rights Institute, UNSW and a Director of the Crescent Foundation. His humanitarian activism extends to several, high-profile campaigns including #SaveHakeem to free Bahraini refugee Hakeem al-Araibi from a Thai prison for which he was a Finalist for the Australian Human Rights Commission Medal. He is a former columnist for the Sun Herald, author, and co-author of several books including ‘Fighting for Hakeem' by Hachette Australia, and writes for the Guardian, The Age, and other publications and holds a Professional Coaching License and helped guide dozens of Australia's finest young female and male talents, many of whom graduated to Australia's National Teams. In 2019, the Australian Financial Review recognized Craig as a ‘True Australian Leader', the Sydney Morning Herald as one of the ‘People that Defined 2019′, he was the recipient of the 2020 NSW Government Humanitarian Award for his work with sport and human rights, an Australian Human Rights Commission Medal finalist, was awarded the Australian Muslim Council 2020 Abyssinian Medal and was a finalist for the NSW 2021 Australian of the Year. In 2021, Craig became a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Australia Day Honours List which he dedicated to and shared with his refugee friends and all refugees seeking safety around the world. In 2020, Craig contributed to the acquisition of Humanitarian Visas and evacuation of around one hundred predominantly female Afghan athletes from Kabul escaping the Taliban including the Afghan National Women's Football Team and Taekwondo athletes, as well as Afghanistan's several Paralympians who went on to compete at the Tokyo Paralympic Games weeks later.  Working with Australia's Immigration Minister, Alex Hawke, and Foreign Minister, Marise Payne as well as trusted members of the Australian Parliament, Craig used his sporting and political connections to secure the safety of many Afghans.  Shortly after the Kabul airport was closed to evacuation flights, Craig also assisted 15 young girls to escape a Kabul safe house while the Taliban searched from house to house for them and acquired the Humanitarian Visas for them to resettle in Australia. Somehow, Craig was nominated as one of Australia's Best Dressed Men despite spending his life in ripped jeans and board-shorts and still plays football for the Waverley Old Boys Over 35's in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, Australia where he tries to relive old glories. Today, Craig advises on athlete activism for some of Australia's most prominent sportspeople and is an Adjunct Professor of Sport and Social Responsibility with Torrens University, Australia where he has developed an online course called ‘Sport for Good' which teaches athletes and sport practitioners how to utilize sport for social justice and progressive issues around the world. Craig holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), a Master's Degree in International Sports Management, and a Postgraduate Degree in Football Management. In this episode, Craig discusses: How do you define human rights? Maybe a practical example of what that is in practice. Is it just about equality of opportunities in a legal and moral sense or much more? What prompted you to become a human rights advocate? Was there a trigger for you that made you focus on this and what keeps you going when issues like Manus Island detainees among other cases must sometimes feel like they will never go away? Many of us witnessed through the consistent media coverage your role in freeing footballer Hakeem al-Alraibi in 2019. That was a relentless campaign and one that I imagine you had to pull on every lever you had to make that case stay front of mind in not just the media but the government's agenda. Reflecting on that experience, what did that reveal about Australia's human rights approach? We have a problematic human rights record in Australia and the First Nations people have suffered and continue to suffer – for example, ABS figures from 30 June 2021 stated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners made up 30% of all prisoners and 78% had experienced prior adult imprisonment. And life expectancy remains much lower than non-Indigenous Australians. How can we rectify this huge and relentless situation faster and in a way that is humane? Take away: What is your final takeaway message for us on The Politics of Human Rights?   To connect with Craig: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/craig-foster-am-69b9a72b/ W: www.craigfoster.net
