Why do some processes—like aging, birth, and car crashes—occur in only one direction in time, when by the fundamental symmetry of the universe, we should experience time both forward and backward? Our dominant perception of time owes more to Western history and social order than to a fact of nature, argues writer Rasheedah Phillips, delving into Black and Afrodiasporic conceptions of time, where the past, present, and future interact in more numerous constellations. Phillips unfolds the history of time and its legacy of racial oppression, from colonial exploration and the plantation system to the establishment of Daylight Savings. Yet Black communities have long subverted space-time through such tools of resistance as Juneteenth, tenant organizing, ritual, and time travel. What could Black liberation look like if the past were as changeable as the future? Drawing on philosophy, archival research, quantum physics, and Phillips's own art practice and work on housing policy, Dismantling the Master's Clock: On Race, Space, and Time (AK Press, 2025) expands the horizons of what can be imagined and, ultimately, achieved. Rasheedah Phillips is a queer housing advocate, lawyer, parent, and interdisciplinary artist working through a Black futurist lens. Phillips is the founder of the AfroFuturist Affair, founding member of the Metropolarity Queer Speculative Fiction Collective, and co-creator of the art duo Black Quantum Futurism. Phillips' work has been featured in the New York Times, The Wire, New York Magazine, Boston Review, Hyperallergic, and e-flux. Rasheedah Crawly is an Entrepreneur and the Owner of Franklinton Market & Luxe Skincare. This week is such a fun and insightful episode as I sit and get to know Rasheedah and all that she does and wants to do right here in Columbus, OH. A few months ago I saw news that a "market" was coming to Franklinton, which is the area this podcast's studio currently resides in. While that doesn't sound like a big deal, what it meant was I could go grab drinks and snacks right across the street anytime and didn't have to drive a few miles for it anymore! So, you'll hear me chat with Rasheedah about how wonderful that is, but of course we dive into how the Market came to be out of necessity not just for people in the area, but it all started from Rasheedah herself wishing it existed! We talk about her background in marketing, the whole process of how her and her business partner created the Market, her goals with it, the growth of the city of Columbus, what's preventing certain growth, what prevents us as indivuduals from growing in general and how to get past that, starting her skincare brand 'Luxe' & lots more! This is such a fun conversation with a wonderful human! Follow Rasheedah and all she does below! In this episode, host Chris Nguon connects with Rasheedah Brown-Harris, who might very well be the most important guest we have ever had on the CARMA Chronicles. Rasheedah sits down with us straight from the Bronx and offers a beautiful and authentic look at how Healing Centered Engagement has impacted her, her family, and her community in New York City. Rasheedah is a Parent Leader with the Parent Action Committee (PAC), a resource and supporter for caregiver wellness, a staunch advocate for all things right for young people and their caregivers, and a Healing Centered Pioneer who became HCE Certified along with a handful of wonderful community members, practitioners, and caregivers in 2022. And that's just in her time away from her primary job! You don't want to miss this conversation.
"If we have any hopes of fundamentally breaking away from the patterns of the past and rupturing the inadequate present, the future can no longer be envisioned only by those with the privilege of time and space to imagine. It can no longer be constructed within a bootstraps narrative of personal responsibility and self-determination that treats only some as deserving of a roof over their heads. Our measure of progress must rely on how much we can transform our values to provide broad scale and equitable access to housing opportunities for all.”In this episode, Angela talks to PolicyLink Housing Director Rasheedah Phillips — Afrofuturist, attorney, tenant organizer, policy advocate, and interdisciplinary artist. Listen in as Angela and Rasheedah discuss how time can be created, reclaimed, resourced, and redeemed; and the ways that we, collectively, must operate from a place of temporal abundance versus temporal scarcity.
In this episode, we start our discussion with Dr. Rasheedah Pickett, PT, DPT, CBIS, CLT-LANA sharing her personal story of transitioning from high school to graduate school and how she honored herself by staying true to her dreams. We then shift to a discussion of the importance of minority representation in the medical field and how we can change the narrative to resonate within our community. We further discuss some of the common misconceptions about physical therapy, while getting a behind-the-scenes exclusive of some challenges one might face when choosing PT as a profession. You will definitely walk away inspired to consider the impact of our efforts or the lack thereof for the future generations to come. How Is That Legal?: Breaking Down Systemic Racism One Law at a Time
America's housing system is designed to keep Black women locked out. But eviction records don't tell the whole story. Rasheedah Phillips joins us to discuss the national housing crisis and how systemic racism is embedded in housing policy. She breaks down racial discrimination in rental housing, how eviction records can haunt tenants for life, even if they haven't actually been evicted, and the opaque nature of tenant screening reports. With extensive local and national expertise, Rasheedah examines how and why Black women most often bear the brunt of the many structural inequities in the rental housing market. To solve this crisis, she calls on advocates to center the leadership of the people who are most impacted and then funnel resources to their efforts. Guest: Rasheedah Phillips (@RPhillipsBQF) is Director of Housing at PolicyLink, a national research and action institute advancing racial and economic equity. Rasheedah is also an interdisciplinary afrofuturist artist and cultural producer who has exhibited and performed work globally. If you enjoy this show and want to help fight poverty and injustice, consider making a donation to Community Legal Services today! Joining in conversation is theoretical physicist Dorota Grabowska, who works in quantum field theory and met Rasheedah Phillips during their time in the lab. Together, they discuss how quantum physics can transform our everyday understanding of time, Black Quantum Futurism's residency project and exhibition CPT Symmetry and Violations, and how scientific work might impact physicists' experience of time. The conversation is hosted by Mónica Bello, Curator and Head of Arts at CERN. Arts at CERN is made by Reduced Listening. The producer for this episode is Georgia Moodie, and the executive producer is Jack Howson.

Self-care is important because, as cliché, as it may sound, you cannot pour from an empty cup. As beauty professionals, we give so much of ourselves to our craft that there are times that we forget about ourselves. For example, the salon was so busy one summer that I was unable to do my own nails. They’d grown out so badly that a client showed some concern. She said to me, “Now, I don’t go to a hairdresser whose hair is a mess, so *looks at my nails*, what’s going on Ms. Rasheedah?” Although I was embarrassed, it was a quick reminder that I had to start making time for myself. This year, I started a routine after work. I decided to light candles, pour a cup of wine or tea (depending on the workday), and sit in silence until my cup was empty. That’s right, no phone calls, texts, e-mails, social media, nothing, pure silence. For a while, it worked, and I was able to shower and go to bed without feeling the weight of tomorrow on my shoulders, and guess what, it felt good!
